Drive up to the airport, park in the big open lot, walk across the street, and stand in awe of the panorama before you. It’s a twisty drive, but very much worth it.
If you’re flying into PHX and driving to Sedona, I recommend the scenic route through Prescott Valley, then up 89A over Mingus Mountain’s 7,800 ft. elevation, through Jerome and into Sedona.
Locals call it the “back way” to Sedona. If you take Fain Road just before Prescott Valley, you’ll avoid the madness of metropolis which PV has become, plus you’ll pass by the enormous pronghorn preserve just before you hit 89A at the bottom of the mountain.
I-17 north from Phoenix, exit Cordes Junction/Hwy 69, take Fain Road right/north to Hwy 89A right all the way into Sedona. About 150 miles and 2.5 hours drive time.
If you’re a shopper, Tlaquepaque village in Sedona has a great assortment of shops, galleries and restaurants in a very uniquely southwest atmosphere.

Just take it all in. Pictures will never do it justice no matter how hard you try or good of a photographer you are.
If you rent a car opt for the insurance this time around smallish roads and tourists means you might end up with unknown damage.
Chapel of the Holy Cross is a nice visit even if you aren’t religious the scenery is great.
Sound Bites Grill is neat if you like live music.
Avoid the 89 Agave Cantina if you can, I got food poisoning there.
Any of the red rock parks are great, hit the energy vortexes if you can makes for a great picture and story.
Going North out of Sedona on 89A Slide Rock Park is nice as well.
That is all I have since it was a short weekend trip for us.

If it is like some of the other small towns in AZ, like Payson AZ, watch out for speed traps and movable speed cameras closer and within the towns.
They have a McD’s.
