I tried biotin when I lost more than half my hair after Covid. My hair eventually grew back, but I don’t think biotin really had anything to do with it.
I’m curious if any people with PCOS have tried products with minoxidil. I had a weird T surge about 10 years ago and experienced some follicular burnout, but then was put on progesterone (for non-hair reasons) and had 1/3 my hair just fall out. I quit after 6 months, but my hair has never been as long or thick, and the color darkened a lot.
@brainmist I have had a lot of success with it for a heavily thinning part and back bald spot. It is very low risk and you can get it on sale at the drugstore if you try. It does take about 3 months before you start to see any tiny new hair, and you will have a sudden shed sometime before that as your growth cycle adjusts. I started in December and I’d say I finally felt like everything is the same length and texture starting around June.
If you have the patience for all that, do it. I wish I had tried it sooner.

I was put on estrogen free implant for birth control years ago and after about 6 month had the same thing happen, lost about a 1/3 of my hair. Dr said it was not the birth control and put a new implant in me and with 6 month it happened again. My hair has never grown back like was before (I had super, super thick hair and now it’s just meh, normal.) I did a lot of reading online and a lot of people had the same problem and a few drs explained as like their hair went through menopause and and shed (just like you do during menopause) so it’s permanent. Lucky us and asshole doctors for not telling us.
Also with that medication and any medication containing the ingredient minoxidil when you stop taking it your hair will fall out. It only works while you use it.
@DLPanther@Star2236 Ugh, yeah, I wish I’d been warned. Progesterone was awful for a whole lot of reasons, but to still be dealing with the after-effects? Forever? Fuck. I should have just yeeted the ute.
@brainmist@DLPanther
I had that in like 2015 (a hysterectomy a couple years later so no added hormones now) but my hair has never returned to normal. It sucks.
@phendrick Yes you get very skilled at pulling your hair out with all the practice you get. I am presuming Rogaine (the name brand of this stuff) will help you regaine your sanity, and thus your hair, once they finally move out.
@olperfesser In my family the good hair genes means you gray very late and don’t have white hair even in your 90’s (those genes also come with wrinkling late as well). Of course living into your 90’s comes with its own set of issues.
I started washing my hair with Baebody argan oil shampoo many years ago, when MY MOTHER pointed out a bald spot on the back of my head. I’d been seeing the usual shower-drain hair loss for years but I didn’t want to deal with the use-it-forever requirement of minoxidil. Baebody claimed that argan oil would make my hair grow back - that didn’t happen, but the hair loss stopped and when I use it the gray goes away.
Unfortunately it had the weird side effect of causing an itchy rash in my eyebrows that required applying hydrocortisone to the rash while suspending the argan oil and using a pyrithione shampoo. But by decreasing the argan usage to weekly I got the same benefits without the rash.
Unfortunately Baebody has since changed its formula - I’m just about out of the old stuff and looking for a good replacement…
I would NOT have a Clue, I never tried the stuff!

@heartny Wow - I didn’t realize that hair loss could be another effect of Covid!
@Kyeh Yep, look up telogen effluvium and Covid.

I thought hair loss was a natural part of being a parent.
@phendrick Or cat servant

Unfortunately yes. Thanks grandpa.
Minoxidil like one on sale today has worked wonders, as did finasteride/dutasteride. Minimum if any side effects, at least for me.
The only pain point is that once you stop the medication, the hair also goes away with it. What a shame.
I have a small bald spot on the back of my head. Its going to stay, I’m not wasting time, money, and effort for the sake of filling it in.
It is part of who I am.
@OnionSoup Ditto
I was lucky and inherited good hair genes. The men in my family still have healthy long hair into their eighties.

Nioxin, no new hair. But the remainder held on for dear life, so the person selling it to me claimed. Did not take me long to stop using it.
Minoxidil drops, made scalp itch, did little or nothing.
Haiku:
Oh Minoxidil
Did I really need that hair?
It’s too much trouble
