Of course you could look at the sales stats for your county too. Heck join all the sales facebook pages for your town and country and ask. In fact a giant bill board might work. Clearly they aren’t volunteering here they are responsible for you having so many t-shirts that in other contexts someone might think you have a problem. If you found them maybe could just donate them all to you.

Felix Faure - a victim of Cupid in the Elysée Palace

The ruby-cheeked cupid overlooking the silver drawing room in the Elysée Palace has witnessed history - some of it recorded, some of it not. In 1809, he saw a beaten and tired Napoleon sit down and sign his abdication. Almost a century later, he heard President Felix Faure die in the arms of his mistress Marguerite Steinheil and only he knows in exactly what circumstances the president breathed his last.

President Felix Faure had a clear idea of what it meant to be a president. At a time when European rulers looked down on the young republic, Faure sought to give his role some gravitas by adopting the ways of the monarchies.

He travelled in grand style, collected mistresses and changed attire several times a day.

“He took great care of his figure, changed his clothes three times a day,” says author and retired museum curator Georges Poisson.“He even wanted a presidential costume to be invented, with lots of embroidery, but as everybody made fun of him, it was never made.”

A handsome man, Faure also had a soft spot for the ladies

In her memoirs, Steinheil recalls her secret rendezvous with the president in the silver drawing room to exercise her functions as his “psychological advisor”, as she put it.

"A private detective dispatched by the president would accompany me to the Elysée Palace. I always entered through a little door overlooking the gardens [see map]. I crossed the ground floor, and reached the blue drawing room where the president was waiting for our work session,” writes Stenheil.

On that fateful day on 16 February 1899, Steinheil and Faure were alone in the drawing room, when the president’s aides heard screams. They rushed to the president’s rescue and found Steinheil shrieking as the president lay suffocating on the sofa.

Faure, who was later diagnosed with having suffered a cerebral haemorrhage, died that same evening. It was only a matter of hours before the whole of France was awash with rumours of the president dying in the arms of his mistress.

The left-wing political press at the time had a ball, explains French historian Anne-Claude Ambroise-Rendu, with accounts of Faure’s death full of cheeky innuendos.

“Felix Faure passed away in good health, indeed from the excess of good health,” wrote the French daily Gil Blas in February 1899.

“He was sacrificed on Venus’s altar, oat the limits of that official morality of which he was supposed to be the highest representative,” writes the libertarian Journal du Peuple.

The similarity in the French language between the word for undertakers and a slang word for oral sex was also a source of many jokes about Faure and his mistress. After his death, Steinheil was nicknamed la pompe funèbre (look it up!).

Historians today have yet to reach a definitive version of Faure’s final moments.

Poisson says it is clear that Faure and Steinheil, who was found half naked, were involved in some of sort of embrace.

“We have witness accounts from the general secretary of the Elysée at the time and the valet,” says Poisson. “The president was found with his hand clenched in her hair and the president’s aides hacked her hair with such clumsiness that her skull was cut.”

But historian Pierre Darmon thinks it’s unlikely he died while having sex with his mistress.

“It is almost certain that she was at the Elysée," he says. "But is very unlikely that his first convulsions were spasms of satisfaction.”

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the president was tired and nervous.

According to Darmon, if there was anyone on Faure’s mind at the time it wasn’t Steinheil, it was Dreyfus.

French artillery captain Alfred Dreyfus was wrongfully accused of treason and imprisoned on Devil’s Island, a notorious case of anti-Semitism in the army that had blown up into a political storm that threatened to bring down the government.

The far-right press later suggested Dreyfus’s supporters assassinated Faure because he refused to review the Dreyfus case. In January 1899, he signed a bill that would take the case out of the responsibility of a top French court which appeared to favour review.

But Steinheil was accused in some quarters of poisoning Faure. Accusations which gained pace when she came under suspicion of killing her own husband in 1908, acquiring the nickname of “the Red Widow”.

Stenheil’s mother, Emilie Japy, died of a heart attack and Adolphe Steinheil was strangled. Marguerite Steinheil was found tied to a bed. She told police that three men and one woman dressed in black attacked her during the night.

It is at that point that the secrets surrounding Faure’s death grew into a full-blown scandal, known as L’affaire Steinheil in the French press. The outcry died down when Steinheil was finally acquitted of killing her husband after a tumultuous trial in Paris

“Scandals involving politician’s private life and public life appear for the first time in the press,” says Ambroise, “they have two dimensions, the press draws attention to something that has been hidden by the authorities and at the same time denounces the commercial exploitation of the scandal it creates.”

The ingredients of a good scandal haven’t changed since the late 19th century, says Ambroise, and neither has the silver drawing room.

A century later, French President Nicolas Sarkozy briefly turned the drawing room into an office, before restoring it to its original state. Maybe it was not the right place for a known workaholic, where excesses of any kind could prove fatal.

All are stranded on small islands without enough resources. things like handwriting lists of who is alive is all the communication coming out. I am happy to see friends names on those lists but dang it is scary.

Well I am up to $53.30 of things stolen (not counting the value of the stuff item) and still 5 hours to go tomorrow. Not sure I am going to do this sale again. And I think you and I are going to have to agree to disagree. I see the masks as a way for the goalie to express his self, and over the years there are great examples of both ends of the spectrum (artistic to testosterone fueled imagery).

I don’t know that I think the mask would intimidate anyone from scoring a goal. It is not like the players are at war and the element of surprise from a creepy AF mask would scare the shit out of them. They know who is in net and they already know what the mask looks like.

As far as the SC logo, there has been a handful of goalie who placed markers on the back side of their masks to mark each SC win or franchise win. This was all I could find, but it is not the one I was thinking of…

Some of my favorite artistic masks, with my absolute favorite being Bishop’s TB Lightning glow in the dark mask (~2015??)

And as far as Elliott is concerned, this is not his first “Jason-esque” mask. Seems to be a theme…

@Kidsandliz @narfcake We have schools here in Kansas (also in Missouri and I’m sure other states, too) who are begging for teachers – just about anyone with a college degree. While she might not be teaching college, she would be teaching. And while she might not be making the “big” bucks to start out, she would have benefits, including health insurance, a big plus.

In what universe is it appropriate for agencies to treat people like crap, and citizens think it is OK for them to do that, because they temporarily need assistance? Certainly dumping on people who temporarily need public services says more about you than it does about me; making assumptions they aren’t trying hard enough to find a job so blaming them for the situation isn’t appropriate either - especially when you aren’t privy to the details. BTW I am STILL paying for medical bills. Maybe I should declare bankruptcy (over half of bankruptcies are due to medical bills) but I am trying not to because I believe in paying what I owe people to the extent I possibly can. People gave me services and to the best of my ability I need to pay for those services. Cripes under Brunner’s I qualify to get rid of my student loans under an adversarial proceeding in a bankruptcy. Haven’t done that either. Every time I have enough work I start paying again.

Certainly it sounds like you have had some crappy things happen in your life. I don’t notice people trashing you for that. I certainly haven’t. You are pretty unfailingly nasty to me on this forum for reasons best only known to you. I sure hope for your sake that you don’t end up finally needing to use a safety net society has in place for folks. It is there for a reason. I sure wish I didn’t need to use it right now, but I am equally as glad it is there for me to use. I have worked in other countries with far more public services, including medical care, than this country has. The compassion and empathy I see in those countries is something our society could learn from.

And I would far prefer not to have to live the way I am currently living. It is way too stressful and I am far too close to having no money at all. A job, any job (well any job that is legal), I can do regardless of whether or not it requires my education and professional work experience is preferable to my situation right now (and yes I have had temp crap jobs like manual labor in walmart’s parking lot with sweat dripping off my eyelashes working for the plant vendor. Job sucked, brought in money, did a good enough job I had the best “store” in the state).

A recent (in the last month) survey of new public school teacher salaries indicated that in only one major US city (Pittsburgh) could a newly certified and hired PS teacher afford a 1 bedroom apartment.

I don’t know how well this survey was conducted. I don’t know if the survey people averaged the new teacher salaries of various school districts. Etc.

Around the local, some districts pay very well. These usually have their pick of experienced teachers.

Others pay average or pay poorly.
Every teacher I know except one (she is a language and special Ed person; works abroad for big bucks) desperately wants out of the profession. They feel like they accomplish next to nothing as teachers, due to other acute demands (politics, bureaucracies, parents, silent problems and emergencies) on their time.

Most of these US based teachers donate portions of their salaries to providing resources for their students. They feel they have no choice, since the materials aren’t fully funded. Most of them put in 10-12 hour days every day (class and materials prep) and work during the summer and even then it’s tough to pay the bills.

Most of them spend more time with students acting as social workers (for which they have no training or minimal training) than as teachers. This is due to the desperate natural of the students’ situations.

Certainly the idea of being a PS teacher is worth a look. A guarded look.

Some school systems are very rewarding to work in, if one can get into them.

In not sure why @kidsandliz shouldn’t get to celebrate if she was having to deal with fundamentally dishonest pubic servants or government contractors, and now the office situation has been reformed.

Food Stamps are available as part of our system.

I’m not sure why anyone who legitimately qualifies should be ashamed of getting them. Or why that person should think they deserve to have to deal with dishonest workers.

@Kidsandliz Sorry if I touched some kind of nerve. I was just pointing out that there are teaching jobs that I’m sure you qualify for. These are jobs that provide that much needed health care that you obviously need.

@f00l I believe that in Kansas the average starting pay of a teacher is somewhere in the low 30’s. I think that would be enough to afford a one bedroom apartment, because the living is certainly a lot cheaper here than in any major city. And a one bedroom apartment is a lot better than having to live in HUD housing. With this kind of starting salary, there would be no more SNAP people to have to deal with either.

Also, I’m not saying @Kidsandliz would have to make a lifetime commitment to being a public school teacher, but it would certainly help to get her back on her feet.

And I have looked into it (teaching k-12). In this state starting public school teacher salary is low (one of the lowest in the nation) and for non certified teachers is just under $10/hour. In the school districts around me you need an undergrad major in the subject you are teaching (and my under grad was not in a k-12 school subject unfortunately). In addition you need to take a number of college classes (you have 3 years to do them all - if you don’t take any you get fired at the end of that school year) to then get the teaching certificate certificate. At that rate of pay I’d have no money to pay tuition. I could do teach america without all that but that is peace corp pay, for 2 years only and no guarantee I’d be assigned here (I’m in HUD and waiting lists can be years, this particular one isn’t but that due to a number of other factors). I am on the substitute teaching list ($60/day) but haven’t been called yet. Registered with a couple of temp services… and the list goes on and on and on…

Not everyone who works for these agencies are dishonest. Often those seeking aid come in with a chip on their shoulder and are expecting everything to be given to them. Not saying you did this, but it happens.

@Barney missed the edit window. If year one you don’t take any classes (eg you are not certified) you have no job year two so that pretty much commits you to concurrent college enrollment. Then because you were fired no unemployment compensation. Of course you don’t get that if you quit either.

@Barney That may be true (chip on shoulder) but people need to know the rules and follow them which was a huge problem in that office and was not happening in my case. Then there was retaliation when I forced them to follow the rules by going up the chain. The problems I was having must have been a big enough problem as all the administration was fired very recently and the state is now running the office in my county while they “clean up the mess” (and yes I asked them about when they would be posting job openings to replace the bunch they fired - I check all city, county and state lists weekly and haven’t seen any there).

In any case employees need to behave professionally regardless (which isn’t always easy). When I was working during chemo I was costing my school’s insurance so much money (they were self insured) that higher ups were trying to get me to quit. I once over heard two people saying that I must be stupid as I appeared not to notice how I was being treated. Nope I noticed. I continued to behave professionally - because that is what is required of employees.

For those of you job hunting I have discovered that the online screening bots require that you use specific language and words or you automatically get rejected before a human even looks at your application. You want to make sure your cover letter and resume uses those words and phrases and related ones that are in the job description in both job duties and your cover letter. You also need specific words and phrases that are on the website with respect to mission, other important things in one or both as well as the bot may be tagging for that too. Thus each cover letter needs individualized to the job which takes time.

@Barney You’re suggesting a different line of work, so one’s employment history isn’t going to have as much weight. That means the competition are younger folks … and if you were HR, who would you pick? Naturally, they can’t be blatant in stating the reasons for rejection, but it happens.

@f00l You could load the music on to your phone if you have enough space. I don’t know if this is still the case but you can get everything off the ipod using a PC (not a mac that I know of) and look for invisible files. It then shows up, you can copy all the files to the PC or a thumb drive (which in my case I then dumped onto my computer). If you put it on one of those thumb drives that has a phone connector on the second side that should then make it easy to then park it all on your phone.

@tinamarie1974 When I was a kid and we’d trade halloween candy I’d keep so little of mine as I hated most of it. My siblings knew that so it usually cost me 2-4 other candy bars just to get one I liked. Then of course our parents snuck our candy we were forced to put in the freezer and stood by silently when we’d blame each other. At least I escaped the blame for most thefts as much of what was stealthily eaten by them was stuff I hated and everyone knew it. My parents only admitted they did that years later.

@narfcake Blame. The 12yr old LG front loader was making all kinds of noise and the consensus is the bearings are shot. Repair is a 3hr teardown activity plus parts, so cheaper to buy a new one (12 years of newer tech, materials, and engineering too, so its not all bad). So the new $1K+ LG is on its way from Costco, so at least it was on sale, an extended warranty, and I get 2% CB. A whole $20! W00t¡ If this one lasts 12 years, that’s only $7/month to “rent” it.

BLAME: Using intentionally high repair costs to driving sales from shortened lifespans/MTBF is BS. And we wonder why we have a throwaway/single-use mentality.

@mike808 It’s not just appliances; electronics are even worse. User replaceable batteries? Nope! Instead, it’ll be glued into the middle of the device.

And then, there are cars. Replace a serpentine belt? It’s 5 hours labor because the only way to access it is to dismantle the entire front end.

@mike808 @narfcake Yeah - the cost to fix the screen on my computer is way out of line because the bezel is glued to the screen so you have to replace the entire top half. And the battery isn’t user replaceable like the older version of this laptop.

It’s tedious but typically doable if you have the patience and know a little about what you are doing. YouTube helps. I was able to replace one of mine for about $50 when IBM (pre-Lenovo, and pre-YouTube ubiquity) wanted $800

In the name of peace I’m probably better to just smile and choke down another couple meatloafs. But once she’s in her own place, I’m definitely going to make a chili cheese meatloaf! Probably Havarti or Muenster though.

I admit it would be impressive if you also did those things while knowingly consuming “cyanide-meatloaf”.
Tho, if you did that, your motives for going forward with the scene might provide for a possible interesting potential explanation, if you were willing to provide one.

PS. I did not love my family meatloaf dinners.
Even now, I avoid it altogether, unless rudeness or disconcerted feelings re the cook or the host would result.
It would be fine with me if no one ever made another meatloaf recipe. I promise my feelings would not be hurt.

Yeah. Questionable biz model. They did kinda have lots of publicity and a huge starting subscriber base.

And that was the problem. Because they lost big bucks on every subscriber who actually used the service.

They had believed that their initial success would bring the theater chains to cut amazing cheap volume ticket deals with them, to make it all viable.

The theater chains never did. So …
RIP for them.

@ybmuG I’ll take your weather. Yesterday was the 3rd hottest day all year, the 8th the second and this month has been the hottest on record. Only something like 98 today (temp, not heat index). I want, not NEED nice weather like you are having. Sure there is a ton of snow in the winter, but heck the autumn is lovely.

@Kidsandliz Indeed. I’ll take it. I’d post a picture of a recent storm when I had 22" of snow on the top of my car, but that was part of what got lost when my SD card got torqued (BLAME)
