@blaineg There are rather a lot of them in which it’s not that big of a deal. Relatively few had to defeat a British military opposition to their exit, and many maintained ties in the form of having the Queen still appearing on their coinage. We were the first, and yes, we had to fight for it, but most just had to be diplomatically and electorally persuasive.
@blaineg There was a reason for the “Sun never sets” meme.
For at least a couple of them, I’d wager there are a few pints raised in Britain on those days as well.
@blaineg I think most of us Brits think it’s all in all a good thing for countries around the world to have their independence. I strongly believe (as do most of my compatriots) that people should have the right to chose who rules them.
You won’t find many wishing we still ran an empire.
Good thing I went to fireworks last night. Currently a thunder and lightening storm and they (the area’s best one) were supposed to start in 30-45 minutes. Hope the rain stops.
@Kidsandliz Took my mattress & box springs outside this morning to air out & freshen up, and also steamed them just a little so they wouldn’t be too long in drying. Then we got the first rain in about two weeks. Sure surprised me! Looks like about 1.5 - 2 inches fell, judging by the water level in my wheelbarrow in the back yard. I had checked the forecast yesterday and didn’t see anything coming for the interim.
They’re still there. It’s amazing how much wet queen mattresses weigh.
Sleeping on a different bed tonight. Hoping tomorrow is as hot and sunny as yesterday was.
@phendrick Well that is a serious drag! I hope you were able to lift the heavy things so that all the water drains just to one end rather than have them lay flat sitting in the water as gravity works.
Our township and county are down to smokers and snap and pops. Not even sparklers allowed any more, nor any other device that releases sparks (in fact I bet they’d ban bic lighters if they thought they could). And they rarely if ever do fireworks on Independence Day itself unless its a weekend. Meh. Good enough for the subjects I guess.
When we retire, one of my ‘positive indicators’ for a place to move to is that real decent fireworks are still allowed to ‘mere citizens’. Its not mandatory but I really miss the many years of family get-togethers that involved lots of food (bbq!), games, and the incendiary results of a drive up to the fireworks stores in Pahrump NV…
All fingers still present. An occasional singe at most, which made for salutary lessons in fireworks handling.
@duodec in my part of Louisiana they have banned m-80s and the little cheap bottle rockets you buy by the gross, but you can get just about anything else up to 2 or 3 inch artillery shells. Some people locally put on semi professional fireworks displays at home. We went to a 30 minute fireworks show at a church down the road Monday night that I swear was probably someone from my neighborhood burning $10k worth of the big box good stuff from the fireworks tent a few blocks down.
@djslack@duodec The M80 ban is nationwide. Loads of stands and stores have the lookalike impostors called “M100” made with one regular firecracker’s worth of flash power inside of an M80 casing, but those are a bad joke. Regular small bottle rockets remain available in lots of places, particularly in Missouri and Alabama; there, you can get them all year.
@werehatrack yep, we used to drive an hour to Arkansas for bottle rockets.
Last night I watched a video of someone firing an 8" peony shell in what looked like some apartments, and I can say I’m glad there’s a bit of regulation on what we can and can’t get. I don’t need the neighbor’s drunk uncle Jeff trying to set one of those off in the street and traumatizing my dogs.
@djslack@duodec@werehatrack fireworks are actually illegal in parts of MO, like St Louis. That doesnt mean people dont set them off. A neighboring county (Jefferson) allows them so all the STL folks drive there to purchase all sorts of glittery fire type explosives.
@djslack@tinamarie1974@werehatrack
We’ve heard news stories about the illannoy highway patrol and chicago PD putting people at the nearest Indiana fireworks stores and calling in license plates and descriptions to marked cars that would pull buyers over as soon as they crossed back into illannoy. Nice revenue source and I bet free fireworks for the connected.
I’ll still take a state/county/city/township with liberal fireworks laws over a nasty ban it all place.
@blaineg How does your wife feel about this one?

@Kyeh She laughed, but #2 step-daughter took offense.
@blaineg Oh dear … !
@blaineg
As written, I would think something like Christmas or New Year’s Day would be more universal… assuming “birthday” doesn’t count as a holiday.
I presume it’s intending the most widely celebrated local or non-international holiday or something?

@blaineg @OnionSoup Yeah, that whole “human rights” nonsense spoiled the whole racket.

@Kidsandliz Send the rain here; we are too dry in south/central Texas

Thanks for the rain, I guess. Yard looks happier.

Locally, I believe they’re found within city limits
However, the city does it sound fireworks displays all over the place as well as the big one downtown
And the neighboring cities to likewise
So chances are somebody is near something
I think you can do them in the county as opposed to city land
I’m not certain of that, and I believe it varies year to year based on whether or not, there’s a burn ban due to drought or similar
If you go to nearby more rural counties, you can do them, but you probably need to have some kind of tacit permission from the landowner
