@awk I can’t tell the difference between white gold and platinum most times, at least not until I look closely. I say save the money and put the rest in your 401k…or use it on Meh.com
@DVDBZN i couldn’t have said it better myself. We need to save it for those purposes. Space X might need. Lot of it. I want to make sure they have the platinum they need.

Looks like about 40% is used as an autocatalyst (like an exhaust filter), and 30% for jewelry. I woupd have guessed that platinum investments would have accounted for more than jewelry, but it only accounts for about 7.5%.
The aeronautics/aerospace fields probably use less than 5% of the total.

Internet jewelry always looks cheap. God, I love meh.com. But every time I see any kind of jewelry as the deal I think it’s just a scam. I’m sure the stuff sells so someone must like it, but wow is it ever not my idea of jewelry.
I shop at Neiman Marcus Last Call a lot and love John Hardy stuff. I can appreciate non-designer stuff but really if you are buying something final sale on the Internet, you have to trust that the seller has good taste. Meh, do you need me to verify the asthetics of stuff before it hits the daily sale? Can do.
@5665150 I’m used to making my own jewelry, whether as a gift or for me. I didn’t bring my beading stuff when moving continents, and like what do I gift people even now?? Though I’m not sure what takes more time, designing and making stuff or shopping around and buying it.
My wife and I went with silver wedding rings. The design we liked (a pair of intertwining willow twigs) was only available in silver, and we were pretty broke anyway. We worked a bit into our ceremony about how silver is really the better metaphor for a relationship, because if you neglect it, it’ll tarnish, so you’d better put some effort into it if you want it to last.
Silver, because it’s one of the few metals that doesn’t break me out in a gross itchy rash within an hour or two. Stainless steel, titanium, niobium, 18K+ solid gold (not filled/plated) are the others.
I can wear some pewter, but it’s a crapshoot.
(in before “put nail polish on it.” I’ve tried it. It doesn’t work.)
@AlexBeefgnaw I’ve been experimenting successfully with putting basecoats and top coats of clear LED gel polish on jewelry and setting them properly with the LED nail lamp. Has worked great so far. The gel polish is crazy durable.
@Pantheist this reminded me of the time a co-worker begged me to cut off her ring because she basically wore it constantly and had gained weight. Where the ring was, her finger was skinny because it was so restricted by the ring. There was no way to get that thing off. She had already tried a bunch of stuff. I was terrified I was going to hurt her as I used huge bolt cutters to get it off.
Her finger survived, don’t know if the ring could be fixed.
@Pantheist Common misconception. Tungsten carbide is incredibly hard, but it’s also very inflexible. You can crack a ring with a standard pair of vise grips:
If a jewelry store person gives you some horror story about people losing their fingers, they are probably either misinformed or trying to upsell you to a more precious metal. There are valid reasons to not buy tungsten carbide rings (the primary one being they can’t be resized/recast onsite at most stores), but emergency removal isn’t one of them.
@Kabn my wedding ring is tungsten carbide and carbon fiber. Hers is white gold and diamonds, much fancier. But I think mine looks cool and if I mess it up, NBD.

@ELUNO Balloon?
@ELUNO
should it not be “To be honest, I don’t really karat all”?
@spitfire6006006 thank you. It was the only reason I took time to get in the comments on this poll.

White gold.
Platinum, baby. Beautiful like silver yet expensive like gold.

Platinum may not look special, but it has extreme characteristics that make it valuable in industrial and aeronautic uses.

@5665150 Meanwhile my last jewelry purchases have been off eBay, for less than $10, and I still think these things suck.

White gold don’t care for yellow but my wedding right is platinum
@ragingredd
What about your wedding left?
@ragingredd Mine was a wedding wing… well, the one I gave to my wife I guess.
/giphy with this wing
@DVDBZN lol its the same as the right!
I’m allergic to Sterling Silver so gotta be Gold.

@dannybeans Was yours a double band and a little bit tarnished, and did you buy them from etsy? I think we have the same rings.
@Pantheist Yes to both! Small world, huh? I like them a lot - elegance in simplicity and all that.
@dannybeans For sure They’re really nice.
I get stainless steel.
@cinoclav fine. I’ll use a Christmas tree as my jewelry box from now on. Don’t tell anyone that’s where my good stuff is. Super cute song btw
I generally prefer mithril or unobtanium.
@moondrake ha

For my rings: tungsten carbide
For the engagement/wedding band I gave: platinum
For watches: titanium
I don’t think I’ve ever worn silver or gold.
@Kabn tungsten carbide would scare me- what if something happened that made your finger swell?

@Kabn Neat- never knew you could do that
Iam terribly fond if any beautiful jewelry of any appropriate metal, do long as the design and execution “work” for the person and the material.
But I’ll give a quick nod to one fav:
Vermeil
(But I rarely wear jewelry)
I like white gold.
