Goat Day #30: Late night snacks
10THIS IS A JUDGEMENT FREE ZONE.
I like food. I especially like all the food that comes after dinner time, and before breakfast. Generally, I eat dinner around 7PM, and sometime between 11PM and midnight I get… snacky.
I love cold stuff. Ice cream, popsicles, frozen slushes etc. I’m not opposed to driving 30 minutes at midnight to go get some junk food either.
It’s 11:01, and I’m eating a dairy queen blizzard right now (Cotton candy, which sounds gross but I like it)
For a more “actual food” type snack, I’ve recently discovered that toasted costco cheese bagels with ham, roast beef, mayo, and havarti cheese are quite excellent. Not quite as good as a reuben would be, but it’s quick and easy.
Speaking of cheese. Say cheeeeeeeese:
What’s your favorite late night snack that takes 15 minutes or less to cook/prep?

Chips and queso dip.
@Thumperchick This is one that is off and on for me. When I have it, I’ll have it like 5 days of the week, and eat a lot of each each of those 5 days. Then I’ll forget about it for 6 months
Ice cream. Right out of the tub.
@mike808 When it starts to melt, are you done, or do you just eat faster to “out run” the liquid?
Asking for a friend
@lichme @mike808 Sometimes the liquid IS the point of the exercise.
Heard it from a friend.
@lichme Use the right tool for the job.
Switch to a straw.
That’s a couple cute kids there!
And this sounds weird, but late night or in the middle of the night I love a nice soft hamburger bun (or 2). Just a plain bun, nothing in it. Just soft carby comforting deliciousness.
@moonhat Even better if it’s a Kings Hawaiian bun.
@cinoclav yes definitely !
Organic rice cakes. The ones that taste like cardboard.
@heartny Apple Cinnamon.
@heartny Oh c’mon… cardboard is much tastier.
@2many2no Truth.
Is that photo of your Thing 1 and Thing 2?
@Kidsandliz Those things are adorable!
@Kidsandliz Indeed it is
@Kidsandliz @lichme Very cute cheese!
Beer.
Nice cold milk from Braums…
@jst1ofknd Braums has the BEST milk!
@therealjrn
We get about 4 gallons a week.
Does soda count?
Popcorn with parmesan. Ice cream with chocolate wine or frangelica drizzled on top. Sometimes chips & salsa with or without cottage cheese or sour cream. Sometimes Indian pappadums grilled in a toaster oven. Sometimes…
Aw, hell who am I fooling? Pretty much anything that stopped moving and isn’t nailed down.
Put it in a bucket.
Bacon cheeseburger taco.
Lately my go-to snack has been 6 saltine crackers with one kraft single torn in 6 pieces for placement on each cracker and then a squirt of sriracha on each.
Ice cream is always good. Lately I’ve been going with it in bar form.
Popcorn is also good, but since there is almost always popped popcorn in the house I regularly grab a handful when I pass through the kitchen so that’s more of an all the time snack than late night.
Aldi’s Deutsche Küche braunschweiger on saltine crackers with a couple of dill pickle spears on the side.
It’s a bonus snack for Mr. Whiskers too!
graham crackers with peanut butter and a glass of milk
@rtjhnstn Your combination reminds me of a song my 1st grade teacher used to sing. It goes…
“Peanut butter sandwich made with jam… one for me and one for Mrs. Graham”
There is NO late night snack that I want that requires cooking or prepping. If it’s not ready as is, it’s not a late night snack.
Popcorn with whatever topping I have.
Also a delicious morning and afternoon snack!
@cinoclav Those kind of look like steamed bao buns
@lichme More like crunchy, melt in your mouth buns.
@cinoclav @lichme Yeah, those could end up on the DEA watch list.
I make some peanut-butter granola bars. Easy, cheap, and delicious.
@FeralRants Recipe or it didn’t happen!
My favorite late-night snack is Whataburger biscuits & gravy.
Almost always follows late-night beers
Ritz crackers with a piece of ham/pepperoni/salami/bacon topped with a square of cheddar, broiled or baked a few minutes until melty and golden.
hors d’oeuvres: square of cream cheese with a blob of anchovy paste, wrapped in a strip of ham, skewered on a toothpick.
Frozen 1/2 ounce meatballs, microwave to defrost, then saute in garlic and butter, add grated parmesan for the last minute while rolling the meatballs around in the pan, serve with toothpicks.
White Castle. Sliders or chicken assholes. Innuendo and out the other.
With BYO hot sauce. So nice, it burns twice.
@mike808 I can’t stand White Castle any more. Had a girlfriend in HS who got a job there - pretty soon everything she owned smelled of grilled burger and onion. The taste of it was in her every… pore.
@compunaut @mike808 I feel ya. I had a GF that worked at Long John Silvers.
@mike808 @therealjrn So she smelled like…
wait for it…
fish?
@compunaut @mike808 …sigh… Yes. And yes I still hit it.
