When I was young I had to walk 5 miles through 3 feet of snow just to get to school.
@mfladd Uphill both ways. Yeah, Gramps, go take your nap.
@Barney Snow days? Entitled bastards!
@mfladd I live 5 houses down from an elementary school. My across the street neighbor used to load her two kids into the car, drive around the block, and then drop them off at the schoolyard.
What’s the matter with kids today? Their parents!
This is the same neighbor where the kid set the house on fire lighting fireworks in the garage.
@mfladd Pfft. When I was a child, I skied to school.
@Barney that’s nuts. When I was in 2nd grade I walked over a half mile (one way) with a friend for a year until we moved a little closer.
@RiotDemon Ha! I couldn’t ski if my life depended upon it. So there!
@mfladd barefoot!
/giphy get off my lawn!
@Barney I haven’t skied since I was six, so I probably couldn’t do it either.
@mikibell phew! I just missed it.
@mfladd
@RiotDemon Yeah… school was 3/4 a mile for us (elementary and junior high). We lived about 8 houses too close to be able to take the bus. High school was a bit over 1.5 miles. Bus only got you if you were 2 miles + from there.
@mflassy Except in the deep south where a faint brushing of snow = around 10’ or something. People freak.
@RiotDemon I have cross country skied to work (was about 4 miles from me) more than once when I lived in northern Idaho and there was no way to drive cars up the hills once you skidded down them (they refused to use salt and cinders just don’t work as well). In high school I rode my bike to school in the snow on a regular basis (skidded though going down a hill trying to stop for the light at the bottom of the hill - very busy street as it was in a business district)
@Barney My sister claims her kids can’t walk 3 residential blocks to school because they have to cross a busy street (this is inside a gated community no less). Umm does she not remember the street we had to cross that had two major 4 lane (eg two lanes each direction on both of them) roads coming in plus our street? There was a light and cross walks but you had to book butt to get across that giant intersection without the light changing on you. Mom watched us cross it the first week or so and once she believed we’d do it safely we were on our own. Not to mention the elementary school was 3/4 of a mile away. Sheesh. We grew up (to use the current term), as free range kids. So many kids seem to be “caged” now.
@RiotDemon was it water skiing?
@RiotDemon giphy had crappy results for get off my lawn… I really didn’t like that one, but it was better than the one blasting a dog off the lawn with a garden hose!
@mfladd
/youtube When I was your age Weird Al
Here to hang out and discuss. Oh wait. I see how it is.
@MrMark I want a chair like that!
The biggest difference is school was really cheap, Jobs were plentiful, if you wanted one there was one. I had money and cars since I could drive. My kids really live like shit compared to the way I lived at their age. They of course think it’s fine because they have no idea that it could be any other way.
@cranky1950 What this country needs is a good 5 cent cigar.
@therealjrn What we really need is a good 5 cent nickel,
instead of having to use dollars for that.
@therealjrn and a good 5 cent candy bar, and 1/2 gallons of ice cream that are still a 1/2 gallon and t-shirts that actually are still made of thick enough fabric…
@Kidsandliz Actually we need jobs that pay a livable salary in this society. One could actually live a lower middle class existence on minimum wage in the 60s and 70s, and most minimum wage full time jobs had major medical health insurance. A dr’s visit cost about and prescriptions cost about half a day’s minimum wage pay.
@cranky1950 Tell me about it. My medical debt keeps growing, although right now my cats are contributing to the medical bills pretty significantly at the moment…
@Kidsandliz We had a cat with an affinity for skink tails. She got liver flukes from them and it cost $200 a pop in 1982 dollars to clear them. I will not go into the cost of male cats and crystals
@cranky1950 Liver flukes? Yikes. Took me about 14 months to clear a cat (cat my neighbor left behind) of whipworm. I had a horrifically bright red and itchy rash from the damn things too. Between the two of us that was expensive. Fortunately back then I had a decent job.
Right now I’m about $1700 into two of my cats since late May… Just spent 300+ in the last 3 days. More to come tomorrow as blood work is back. Sigh. Good thing for a credit card that has given me a credit limit far beyond what makes sense at my current income level so at least I can treat them… of course who knows when it will be paid off. Sigh.
@cranky1950 shoot edit time up. I’d hate to think what it would cost to clear liver flukes today.
Relatively speaking, we had much more freedom and far less pressure and far better prospects and more prosperity.
I think freedom came and went. Boys had freedom. Girls sure didn’t. And while it’s not perfect, and prejudice (racial, gender, etc) is still here, it is better than 60 years ago. I was the first female in my family to go to college, must less get a master’s.
Family mattered differently I think. Not sure how to put that into words. I love my daughter. But she’s not under 25 either. She’s 37, I’m 61 so different bracket than you were asking about, but it’s there already.
I’m a left over hippy, even though I wasn’t old enough to be one. I lost people I cared about in Vietman. Yeah, Iran and stuff are bad, but you know what. War is hell. Always has been, and for some reason, people no want to accept that and that people die.
The concept of privacy is all fucked up. Don’t tell anyone you were at the doctor’s for a hangnail. But post nude pics all over the internet. Back then if a guy got the clap, they told everyone he slept with, now, you never know because you know longer have the right. That’s fucked up.
I honestly don’t know where it went screwy. I don’t blame the net, DnD or any of those things. We had computer and internet long before our neighbors - I didn’t censor it - didn’t believe then still don’t really - but then she wouldn’t hide from me either. Different world
Anywho off my soap box
