I really want this, but I can think of zero justifications for buying it. Measuring the growth rate of my children and plants probably won’t convince my wife I’m not an idiot for getting this. Someone give me the reasons! Please.
@tristin we use a Bosch one and a Leica one for measuring rooms. It’s preferable to a tape measure for solo work, particularly in a room full of furniture or piled with construction materials. Ours does a poor job of measuring to exposed metal framing members but that can be fixed by using a sticky note at the target end. AAA’s are cheap and readily available and the batteries in our Bosch and Leica models (sans Bluetooth) last ages.
Tell her that! But maybe don’t tell her we build custom millwork for a living
Things that you need to measure: Will that new sofa fit on that wall? Measure the wall. How much mulch do I need? Place a stake in the ground and measure to the stake to get the length and width. Add 4", do math and get the number of yards. How far can I throw the cat? Throw cat, measure distance to cat.
@tristin Use for this tool - getting out of allegedly blowing through a red light ticket.
@rpstrong I wonder if, by doing the math, you can then use it and a stop watch to determine the speed in which a teen is roaring down the street in a car?
I used math to get out of an alleged blow a red light ticket. I would have had to be going 45 point something or other mph around the right angle corner (banked the wrong way with a cement wall that showed plenty of evidence that speeding around that corner was not wise) if I had entered the intersection with a red light rather than a yellow one (where in my state it is legal to keep going even if the light later turns red while you are in the intersection). Thus since I wasn’t speeding (cop agreed) and would have had to be speeding to be where he said I was when his light turned green I also hadn’t blown a red light, just a yellow one. He also concurred with the number of seconds both lights are red (cop was on the other street and couldn’t see my light). Then I pulled out the math. The cop, prosecutor and judge had apparently never had anyone use basic physics to get out of a ticket.
There was someone else there with an attorney trying to get out of a ticket and that attorney wanted me to teach him how I did that. I told him if he wanted to pay me a professional consulting fee no problem, otherwise review basic physics, he’d find the formula there. LOL
I had used a blow up of google maps to measure the distance - guess I could have used this tool had I owned it then - hey if this doesn’t sell out and is sold again you can use this example for what this might be useful for (who to I ping on this?), using a tape measure would have been too dangerous as it was a very busy intersection…
@cubeus Funny that it says the most used word is “app”, because most of the reviews I’ve seen call the app clunky and not well though out. For $30, I’ll give it a shot…
@mamawoot If it helps, I’m a shopaholic and I did not buy this. I wanted to, but I didn’t. It looks cool. I set my limit to $25-ish for things I don’t need but want. Fortunately this is over budget. Yay for that.
I want this. I would actually use this.
I’m just too damn poor since the divorce to justify it
Besides, I still don’t know if they’ve fixed my VMP or not…
I use a laser measuring device in my appraisal biz, started with a Stanley which consumed batteries like I eat cookies. Had to put the $$ “digital” ones in to get any kind of service life. It ended up dying after a year of use and I bought a Bosch for more money which has given great service both in device and battery life. If you use a tape or wheel type measuring unit this is a good and inexpensive way to see if the laser can improve your work rate. If you’re a finish carpenter, the +/- 1/16" might not be so good for you.
Finally something that I can actually use, ( if I get a chance to get one at 4 PM ). I am a housing inspector with Fema, after a natural disaster hits any given area in the US ( and it’s territories ) and is signed off by the president and after the applicants call the Fema helpline and have signed up for disaster relief I’m the guy that goes in and specs out all the damages to people’s homes and personal property and try to get them approved for a small business loan or a grant… My current laser measuring tool has started giving issues so having a extra one to take my current units place would be great…
I’m tempted, but even if I continue moving to a new house twice a year, the few minutes I’d save over using a tape measure doesn’t really seem worth it for me.
I just took a look at the manual and it said defaults back to feet w/decimal point which is OK for me but I do have a question for all the incredibly smart people on our forum,I ordered the Chinese laser measuring tool a few months back and the great thing about it was you could look on the screen and it has a red cross hairs on the screen and whatever you end it app it will give you the measurements just said item and take a picture of it if you wanted to. Only problem is it defaults back to meters after you turn it off witch really sucks for me because I need feet. So do you think there’s anyway you can plug it into a laptop via the USB feature it has and somehow override the meter default settings and change it to feet??? If anyone can figure this out it would be a great help to me. The Model number on the unit is RZ-AS120 laser distance meter.
@bigtom67 I’m going to say no. Something like that would likely be in the firmware so unless the manufacturer gave you that option in the instructions or offers an update I don’t think you could override the default setting.
If you’re measuring distance from top of Agnes & Gertrude to the ceiling, your data indicates both are shrinking. Shouldn’t the question be: “Which of Agnes or Gertrude will first diminish to nothingness ?”
Mine is off by 1", every time. If I move the measurement to the front, same thing. Is there some calibration or something where I accidentally made it off by an inch?
I bought a $30.00 cat toy!
I finally opened the box, put the batteries in, turned it on and started measuring rooms. I pointed it down the hall and then looked at the readout. The cat started meowing loudly… yep, she saw the laser spot on the wall and started chasing it.
So, yeah. right now it’s a $30.00 cat toy.
@transplant What I love is how they will run the entire length of the hall multiple times and then figure out what you are doing and so sit in the middle of the hall waiting for the light to get to them.
While I’m a fan of Bluetooth (provided it’s not used in a ridiculous device), abs despite the fact that these are easier and more accurate measurers, personally I LIKE measuring tapes.

This… is actually kinda interesting. Meh?
Meh goes the distance - this deal measures up tonight
Where does the music come out of?
Tools! Yeah!
If I didn’t already have a non-bluetooth version of this, I’d be in for one. Cannot justify buying a new one just for the bluetooth feature.
@cengland0 Same brand? How do you like it? I’m considering this.
@MehAmphetamine Definitely not the same brand. I have the Dewalt that I bought from Home Depot and I do like it. http://www.homedepot.com/p/DEWALT-165-ft-Laser-Distance-Measurer-DW03050/205029600
I’m buying my limit and mounting them on the nose of Great White Sharks.
@huja So… Bluetooth is to Knife as Laser is to Shark?
@mehcuda67 That’s friggin Lasers to you, buddy.
I really want this, but I can think of zero justifications for buying it. Measuring the growth rate of my children and plants probably won’t convince my wife I’m not an idiot for getting this. Someone give me the reasons! Please.
@tristin
Someone’s going to give me a good reason to buy this.
@tristin we use a Bosch one and a Leica one for measuring rooms. It’s preferable to a tape measure for solo work, particularly in a room full of furniture or piled with construction materials. @tristin lol I was thinking the exact same thing. I really want to buy this, but I can’t come up with even one flimsy rationalization for doing so
@tristin
@tristin You can use this to determine how far away someone was when you burned their retina with a laser.
@woo545 Cats never stay still after you throw them. You have to break their legs first. Neck works too.
@woo545 Cat will be a moving target. That example is a fail.
@Kidsandliz Except this device does have a continuous measuring mode. Pass.
@tristin Use for this tool - getting out of allegedly blowing through a red light ticket.

@warpedrotors Animal cruelty ticket for you (grin - know you were joking).
@tristin Anthony Weiner says that a laser is much better at measuring your “junk” for Instagram.
The use of this device ALWAYS precedes work. Buyer beware.
@norman8 Good one!
It’s not a knife. Nor a BT speaker. What do use it for?
“have data like these”
Nerd kudos for acknowledging the plurality of the word “data”
@melonscoop Who doesn’t love a big helpin’ of hot datums?
@melonscoop Data are my favorite Next Gen character.
Is General a Home Depot brand?
I always knew them for cheapie screwdrivers.
@Fej Doubtful. The video for the Android App says, “Only at Lowes.” But it doesn’t sound like a Lowes brand either.
@cengland0 @fej
Neither.

I have one that measures area and volume on the device. Can this do that on the device without bluetooth?
Anyone have a link to the app?
Check fakespot for the analysis on this… Wow… Grade F

@cubeus Thank you.
@mamawoot You’re welcome… I was tempted to blow $30 on this but I’m glad I checked. :|
@cubeus Can you imagine if we had a post-quality analyzer here? (Actually, I guess we do. In the form of hidden posts. Man, I got a lot of those!)
@cubeus It does say that the mfg has an A… so not all is bad, it seems.
@cubeus Funny that it says the most used word is “app”, because most of the reviews I’ve seen call the app clunky and not well though out. For $30, I’ll give it a shot…
you would have had me if it was suitable for outdoors up to 100 meters.
Finally, Meh is selling us lasers. I’ve always wanted to shoot people with lasers!
/giphy bewildered-frequent-hammer
I’m really tempted to get this, but I don’t know if I do enough measuring to justify it…
I don’t need this.
I want this, but I don’t need it.
Meh, please refuse to complete my order if I falter and buy it.
Somebody, please, talk me out of this.
My name is Mamawoot, and I am a shopaholic.
The struggle is real.
@mamawoot If it helps, I’m a shopaholic and I did not buy this. I wanted to, but I didn’t. It looks cool. I set my limit to $25-ish for things I don’t need but want. Fortunately this is over budget. Yay for that.
@heartny Thank you for your support!
Sometimes I feel like I need to go to meetings or something.

General ToolSmart Bluetooth Laser Distance Measurer
I want this. I would actually use this.
I’m just too damn poor since the divorce to justify it
Besides, I still don’t know if they’ve fixed my VMP or not…
@haydesigner Nope, your VMP is not fixed. There isn’t a VMP badge by your name so that’s the first clue.
Had my eye on and wanted a Bosch. But haven’t been able to justify the much bigger $.
Those Vine-loaded reviews for this General, yah, not so confidence-building. Zero 1-star reviews? How often does that happen in the honest world?
But for $30 I’m gambling that General miscalculated, believing they could approach Bosch prices… and failed. slippery-whimsical-faucet
So was this product a Guinea Pig early attempt for General?
@RedOak Awww!
I can’t buy this, the cats would make off with it immediately.
I don’t recommend the Sam Neil method to increase distance reading
4 of these would make for a perfect square dance laser training zone.
Pew? MEH!
ugh… I’ve been thinking about getting something like this… but worried that it’s going to be so meh I end up buying a better one to replace it.
fuck it.

@hanzov69 It worked! Your order number is: mummified-melodic-merlin

@mwarren Thus the bargain.
@mwarren
Is that the system with ten inches per foot?
It has “Tool,” “Laser,” and “BlueTooth” in the description. Must get… must… get…
@PocketBrain meh’s stealth, you will buy this, evil scheme is apparently working…
I was about to buy when I remembered I told myself I was going to be more responsible with my money. Curse you responsibility!
@dptalia there is always tomorrow to be responsible?
I use a laser measuring device in my appraisal biz, started with a Stanley which consumed batteries like I eat cookies. Had to put the $$ “digital” ones in to get any kind of service life. @Czechbikr
Based on the crappy homes being built around here, depends upon the builder for whom you work.
Meh.com comes through with diversifying their products for one day. Can’t wait to pass on another knife tomorrow.
I’m torn. The fact that it defaults to decimal every damn time you turn it off is a huge factor.
Can you pair two to the app to measure in stereo?
Finally something that I can actually use, ( if I get a chance to get one at 4 PM ). I am a housing inspector with Fema, after a natural disaster hits any given area in the US ( and it’s territories ) and is signed off by the president and after the applicants call the Fema helpline and have signed up for disaster relief I’m the guy that goes in and specs out all the damages to people’s homes and personal property and try to get them approved for a small business loan or a grant… My current laser measuring tool has started giving issues so having a extra one to take my current units place would be great…
@bigtom67 Trump wants to know if you’re buying this with your own money…because he’s keeping an eye on Fema expenses.
@gallogj ha ha that’s funny I’m subbed out, kind of like the red headed step children of fema
I’m tempted, but even if I continue moving to a new house twice a year, the few minutes I’d save over using a tape measure doesn’t really seem worth it for me.

I feel like this might be one of those RTFM situations…

More like Mehsurer amirite?
"This looks cool I’m gonna buy one.“

Thinks
"I have absolutely no use for this.”
@eric_ellis This could be posted truthfully on every product thread on this site.
Mine is off by 1", every time. If I move the measurement to the front, same thing. Is there some calibration or something where I accidentally made it off by an inch?
So I connected it to my phone and can take measurements on the device but how do you transfer the measurements to the app?
Ok I figured out, connect via app, press Measure On twice and the Bluetooth button once to transfer the individual measurement
@hafner Thank you. This was driving me insane.
@AgentDiscount Seconded.
I bought a $30.00 cat toy!
I finally opened the box, put the batteries in, turned it on and started measuring rooms. I pointed it down the hall and then looked at the readout. The cat started meowing loudly… yep, she saw the laser spot on the wall and started chasing it.

@dsevcik Well as long as you have something to shoot it at.
