@cengland0 Rise over Run, dude.
Measure a right triangle’s legs, and you plug into an online roofing calculator. Or remember high school geometry with a pencil.
@cengland0 Depends on your roof type, but a simple gable roof has the right angle on the gable side of your house. May need a big ol’ ladder, but you can measure the width of that side to the middle, and that same spot up to the top of your peak.
@cengland0 2 foot level touching on one end, tape measure down at right angle from free end to where tape hits the roof (you can just follow the end of the level). Read tape at bottom of level (rise). Run is 2 feet (or whatever length your level is). multiply (by whatever factor of 12 your level is) both sides to get pitch in 12 ft. This would have given you an angle, which is not the way it is commonly expressed…
@chienfou I agree your method would work but that’s multiple steps and this device would make it so much easier.
I have 29 huge solar panels and I’m considering making some device to modify the angle 4 times a year for optimal performance. I would have considered this angle measuring device if the reviews weren’t so bad on it.
To lift the bottom of the solar panel to a specific height, I need to know the current angle of the roof (don’t care about the pitch really) and the desired angle of the solar panel. I would then need to create a stand/lift rod at the height that would get the panel to the desired angle.
My Latitude is 30.3322 so I would need 3 angles of 4 degrees, 27 degrees, and 51 degrees according to this chart:
@cengland0 Um, how many times, exactly, are you measuring your roof?
It doesn’t change, so why do you need to measure it multiple times?
For checking the accuracy of your seasonal pitch adjustments on multiple panels, this device might be useful. For measuring the pitch of your roof, once, which is what was asked, it is overkill.
Next time, don’t work so hard to justify buying shit on Meh. Just do it.
@cengland0 I think I measured mine in the 1000 degree attic when I did my roof. Hip roof with and addition making the roof L shaped. I found an online calculator and estimated the material needed which was 35 square. I only had a partial bundle of shingles left over.
@mike808 We own 3 houses now and working on buying a 4th. I also need to replace shingles on one of the houses and needed to know how many “squares” of shingles it needed for a rough estimate of cost. Since I have it rented, it was inconvenient to spend a lot of time at the property so I did a quick estimate using google maps with satellite view. The problem is, the area calculated doesn’t account for the pitch. The higher the pitch, the more shingles will be needed.
There are many things around the house I need angles for. I had to hang cameras under the soffits that are angled so I needed to cut a proper wooden mount so the camera was hanging flat.
I bought one of these items from Harbor Freight which works great but I misplaced it and cannot find it.
@cengland0 Since you own 3 houses and it is inconvenient to do it yourself, what about using your unearned income from property, combine it with the lack of interest to earn income yourself, and hire someone to measure your roofs (or is it rooves?).
Be a job creator, my fellow patriot!
Heck, buying cheap disposable tools for your employees on meh mean you’re most of the way there!
@mike808 I will be paying a company to do the roofing but, to prevent from being ripped off, I wanted to get a quick measurement myself. I know the going rate is $300 per square installed in my area. I’m waiting for estimates from two companies and I’ll use my own knowledge to see if they are in-line with my thoughts or if I need to look for other companies.
Will this work in a Non-Euclidean geometry? And will the bluetooth work in a universe where the permitivitty of free space is different than our own? Asking for a friend.
@G1 When you operate as many nofer trunnions as I do, you gotta live a little dangerously. I won’t accept any less precision in my cardinal grammeters!
@dtl_dvl And people wonder why I didn’t go into engineering like my father and my brothers and instead pursued journalism. THIS. THIS is why.
On the other hand, one of said brothers joined a cadre of like-minded college friends whose symbol, worn on a baseball cap, was the schwa. Their greeting was essentially “uuuh”.
@martycaw I still want to know how this works when you are trying to measure an angle for horizontal moulding where two walls intersect. Do you lay the house on its side to measure the angle?
My gf put one in my xmas stocking two years ago and I smiled and politely told her I loved it even though I couldn’t think of a single thing I’d ever use it for.
Then, a few months ago I was cutting into my bathroom walls to build a little cubby hole closet thing to store our cleaning supplies and lo-and-behold, this thing was HUGELY USEFUL when cutting the boards to put inside the wall. I never would have gotten the angle accurate without this tool.
So… it’s a good thing to have on hand… but… it’s also a questionable item for meh to offer.
I received mine today. Bluetooth won’t connect with my iphone 7
I had previously purchased the laser distance measurer…I learned it only connects within the app, it won’t connect within the bluetooth list on the phone settings. (In other words, I have already figured out how the bluetooth settings works on these General ToolSmart products. The angle finder is defective.)
Okay, so Meh promptly mailed me a replacement, and I received it today. It also won’t connect with my phone. Is anyone else having this problem? I have an iphone 7. Other bluetooth items (apple watch, car stereo, portable speakers, the above mentioned other General ToolSmart device) don’t seem to have a problem connecting to my phone.

But his angles would never quite cut it
A sorta good sale

I hope that no Blueteeth were harmed in the production of these.
Now I can time how long it takes me to see my cabinets aren’t level!
The target audience would seem a bit small for meh. But what do I know.
A deal to measure the angle of your dangle.
@mike808 That way you know if it is in proportion with the heat of your meat.
@yakkoTDI Gotta look good when you pose with your hose.
@mike808 Penis. Am I doing this right?
@ACraigL Nope. The game is the craft of daft. Puns for fun. Blunt instruments are not allowed.
That write up belongs in /r/fellowkids or /cringeanarchy
Man , that’s a huge pocket knife…
@somf69 looks like a bluetooth operated switchblade to me
Pythagoras was a cute man with an angle.
I needed to know the pitch of my roof the other day and didn’t have anything to measure that with. Wish I had this.
@cengland0 Rise over Run, dude.

@mike808 What right triangles are on my roof that I can measure?

@bheathain Don’t have a gable roof, it’s hip and valley style.

No speaker? I’m out
@revoked But it’s in the form of a pocket knife!
@huja I know. Pocket knife and Bluetooth. With a speaker they would’ve hit the Golden Trifecta
@revoked . . . and bejeweled with freshwater pearls.
the meh’thical Superfecta
@revoked I really miss rope lights.
I’m more in need of an angel finder.
This is the most fucked up sales site in on net
@bitemehard … and yet you pay VMP for the privilege to buy shit here.
@bitemehard It is amazing. I haven’t bought in so long so they canceled my VMP. Very sad.
@givemeyoursoul That seems dumb of them considering you were giving them $5/month for absolutely nothing
@mike808 yeah it’s been fucked up since you got here. joined on an alcoholic binge
So around double/triple the price because of bluetooth?
Will this work in a Non-Euclidean geometry? And will the bluetooth work in a universe where the permitivitty of free space is different than our own? Asking for a friend.
@awk You need model T-TS02-P (Purpletooth) for that kind of permittivity.
Seems properly red-shifted.
Probably beats taping two pieces of cardboard together, but Bluetooth may be taking things too far.
Paging General Tool in hardware.
Nope – because even Windows Phone and Blackberry has an app for finding angles.
@narfcake How does your Windows Phone bend to fit a 47° angle so you can measure an inside cope?
@El_Oel what @narfcake said. You can’t beat a good angle finder in certain situations.
Can I use this to preintegrate my hydrocoptic marzelvanes?
@dtl_dvl LOL! Only a maniac would preintegrate their hydrocoptic marzelvanes!!
You. You I want to hang with.

The angle meter is in every iPhone . It is part of the level app. I use it for hand rails and on a 2x4 for grading
@martycaw And where would one find the angle meter in an iphone? You have to download the level app or does it already live there?
@Kidsandliz its in the compass app, you just have to swipe either left or right
@martycaw I still want to know how this works when you are trying to measure an angle for horizontal moulding where two walls intersect. Do you lay the house on its side to measure the angle?
@communist cool, thanks
@martycaw I have attempted to use that before, and it does not seem terribly consistent.
Meh always has an angle–you could too for this meh price
Interesting Review of the product:
Too Critical???
@reuster66 Brutally honest. Liked that.
@reuster66 These guys are dolts.
OOOOOH - I have to zero it out! I guess they’ve never used a dial gauge on anything - or a digital scale??
Also - this critical of a $65 tool? Sure. For $24, maybe not.
I agree that it’s not the most durable tool on the planet - but if you can’t tell that just from looking at it…
That’s funny, they heated it…
Hopefully this can help me find the angle of my dangle. I have yet to solve this mystery and now, thanks to MEH I may be able to do just that
I can’t believe General ToolSmart put his name on this garbage. People will do anything for a buck nowadays.
@harveydanger Yeah, this is more of a Corporal ToolSmart kinda thing.
General provides warranty if purchased from approved distributors only. Is Meh approved distributor?
Probably the most useless tool for the masses ever…What was meh thinking? …more blah than meh. You can fool some of the people, etc, etc, etc…

@moonhat I’m disappointed it didn’t find a picture more like this:
@dave Or a check to the ex-wife.
@dave They call that the glory hole.

gut says I need this … brain says WTF!!
guess I will wait to see which wins out!
Inaccurate and fragile? Just what I’m looking for!

@steelopus “build a little cubby hole closet thing” which means a shelf for a hidden camera, of course.
