@haydesigner Ha, ha, this was included in the daily email but they missed the word “cam” when censoring it so it was very easy for someone to figure out what was being sold today without clicking on the link. Oops.
Figure I don’t have anything like this and its the type of thing you’d not think about wanting until after ya need it. Got myself a 480p in black, but once again forgot to do the thread buy for my gif…
/giphy hungry-military-almond
@timstm changed my mind reading reviews and comments out there, and no microsd slot so i cancelled. Maybe I’ll consider the 720p one if there are any left later but I was mainly attracted ton the $28 bucks. Convince me its worth $38 for the 720p w micro sd?
/giphy ive-made-a-huge-mistake
I use 2 of these cameras as baby cam’s and they work excellent for that. I do still have a 3rd one in the box from a past Meh so I think I’ll pass…but I’m tempted to get one and use as a security camera pointing outside.
I have the low-res one and I’m always wishing it had a better picture. As in, I point it at my driveway through a window and I can’t tell the difference between trees, shadows, cars, etc.
Has the manufacturer support gotten any better since the US distributor got dropped and started selling their own cams? I remember trying to find firmware upgrades when I bought a FI9831PB (somewhere else, admittedly) and finding the right files was horrendous.
The part of IP cameras like this? Using the 2-way audio to scream “LOOK OUT HE’S RIGHT BEHIND YOU!” when your son is downstairs in the family room late at night watching a horror movie. Good fun.
@rv617 Sounds like a great idea, but the sound and video lag, so you have to practice your timing. And, the audio isn’t all that loud, unless you add an external speaker.
I’ve had numerous Foscams, pointing at the front door, outside at bird nests, at the thermostat if I’m away on vacation, and they’re okay. Now, I’ve got a Canary, and that thing works great, just great, but I had to pay a lot for it.
Great timing, there’s been a package thief hitting my neighborhood hard during the day. These aren’t really ideal for surveillance much but it’ll do for putting in the window for my tiny porch.
@meh I was using one of the HD ones for the same thing. I got an email while at work when the guy stole packages off the porch. I called police and turned pics and video in. Like 8 months later, I hear they finally got the guy. I sent receipts of lost goods in. Maybe get some money.
@medz that’s awesome at least they eventually caught him. i am hoping this helps deter of course, but i got the 720p one so hopefully will be able to see a face. they won’t be more than 5 feet away from it if they’re standing on my porch. honestly, i live in unincorporated county so the police have a lot of area and not enough resources and i think the meth head thieves know it, but the least we can do is try to deter them.
Read the Amazon reviews in ‘recent’ order, the latest reviews mentioned many various failures.
Also note the support is no longer there and hacking if you can find someone to set up for remote monitoring beyond local Wifi at home.
Software is extremely buggy. I’ve tried about forty apps, would not use Foscam’s app
Make sure you upload the firmware to disable call homes to foreign hosts. Foscam has disabled these a few months ago with a firmware update after a ton of controversy.
I’m on the fence- my landlord has been barging into our house a lot lately, and I’d like some proof that he’s doing it when we aren’t home as well (or peace of mind if he isn’t). Better off with this or just taking an old webcam I already have and hooking it up to an old desktop I don’t use anymore? He’s computer illiterate, so not worried about him tampering with the files either way.
And I would recommend the higher resolution. Used my SD Foscam to watch out the window during Matthew. With all the pixelation, you’d have thought I was using its close cousin to make the videos…
Neat for what I paid, but pretty craptastic video at SD.
@Tadlem43 They’re not rated for outside but I’ve had one of the SD ones hanging under the eve by my garage for a few months now. It may not survive the first bad snowstorm though. So I bought 2 more
I do wish Meh would offer one of the outdoor versions. The foscam-eras I have are just ok. But I’m too cheap to buy great ones, so foscam will do for me.
I have three of the 720P ones already. Love them. They are reliable, wireless, POE compatibile. Two-way audio. Great. One has sorta crapped out in that the washed out white areas become rainbows and unviewable. I have had them over two years now. Eh. However…
These son of guns will send info out to a chinese server when you enable the UPNP setting. This is supposed to make it easy for you to use their new Foscam app to location your Webcam over the internet. Then someone found out that even when you shut off UPNP they still chirp out to the chinese, no clue on what they are sending. So if you use them, make sure your firewall blocks all communication from them to the internet and from the internet to them.
If these had just come up some time over the past week I would have been in! I was in the market for a decent cam because of needing to keep an eye on my newly adopted dog with some decent separation anxiety. I didn’t want to count on one popping up here, so I made the plunge and grabbed a 1080p Amcrest two days ago. Oh well.
Now… See there are reasons to get higher quality cameras… I mean… there are reasons… I’m not always saying they are the best reasons… but There are always reasons…
Disagree with the advice to buy the 480 one or that it doesn’t matter. I’d had two 480’s and been happy with them but got a 720 (currently running one of each) and the 720 is substantially better. (A) better picture quality (as expected) but it performs much better in low light. In my baby’s room, the 480 would switch to night mode in fairly low light - in the same low light, I have a nice color picture from the 720. I get a slightly larger FOV from the 480, though.
@danjessberger Similar here. I bought two, one has a bad power cord that is only outputting 4.8v, so it causes the Cam to switch on and off quickly as it tries to power up. Used the other cord and was able to set them up, but can’t run both until I get a replacement sent.
@danjessberger great. mine is due today and i came to the forum just now being like “oh geez, i should check if these are all DOA”. kind of sucks that’s a default thought when buying any electronics here. hopefully mine works, really need something watching my porch, package thieves are pillaging us.
@Pawstoenjoy I contacted meh.com and they directed me to the manufacturer. I called the manufacturer and they said they can’t help because meh.com isn’t an approved reseller (?). Nobody wants to help. Double bummer.
@danjessberger i’m sure if/when more/most people report getting used and broken instead of refurb cameras (which from these 3 reports sounds like is possible) someone will step up.
i always wonder when anything sold by a 3rd party (meh, amazon seller, ebay, etc) says refurbished if its really refurbished or if its ‘return - won’t fix’ scrap.
@Pawstoenjoy Good catch. I called again and spoke with another rep named Stephen (yeah right). He also said that this needs to be resolved by the reseller, but he at least offered to accept my forwarded email from MEH which explains their direction to me. I guess we’ll see if anything comes of it.
@Pawstoenjoy I was just contacted by a sales manager at Foscam who explained that they’ll be shipping me a replacement. Sounds like a step in the right direction!
@Pawstoenjoy Foscam contacted me to explain that I need to ship them the defective camera and they’ll inspect it then send me a replacement. Hopefully this doesn’t take too long…
@Pawstoenjoy I received my replacement today. This box with a big “Refurbished” sticker across the opening, so maybe the previous one I received wasn’t actually refurbished, but simply returned and re-sold. Will test it out tonight. If you don’t hear back, all is well!
@danjessberger Your story is pretty much mine as well, every detail SAME. No replacement rec’d yet. I don’t think I’ll every buy anything electronic refurb again b/c some items may fail under specific use conditions, or after two hours or whatever, and the refurb folk probably just turn it on and figure “it works” and ship it back out. What a hassle… ordered a month ago and still no camera. Easily would have preferred to just buy a new one and not had to fight the hassle.
Anyone else have the default username/password not work?
Looks like someone forgot to reset it at the refurbatorium. Fortunately there is a reset button on the bottom.
I got two FI9821P cameras. So far I finally got one working. First, reset by holding down the reset button. Second, try to figure out what IP address the camera grabbed by looking at your DHCP server. Or use the phone app that scans the QR code on the bottom.
After that, I managed to upgrade to the latest firmware and things are working a little better although I still can’t get it to work right with CamViewer (iPhone.) Upgrading to the latest firmware is a multistep process that requires files that aren’t that easy to find (the Foscam website is broken.) But I did manage to get them. If anyone is interested (and comes back here) let me know.
The process is first upgrade to 2.x.1.6, then 2.x.2.8, then system 1.4.1.10, then 2.x.1.119. That should get you all the way up to current. Also reinstall the web browser plugin.
@skyhawk85u Yeah, the Foscam.us/firmware webpage has an overlay for me, and the close button doesn’t work. So I had to use a chrome extension called “Behind the Overlay” to see the page correctly.
Luckily my Cams were only 1 revision behind so I only needed that last file you linked.
One thing I did notice, Other Foscam FI9831Ps, I ordered a month ago, had newer firmware already than what is available on the foscam.us page
System 1.5.2.11
App 2.21.1.143
Not quite the same model, but from what it looks like on the website they should both be able to use the same revisions, I just don’t know where to get the newer one.
@Pawstoenjoy Oh good idea with the Chrome extension. I just looked at the page source to get the right links.
I wouldn’t worry about the firmware for that other model. It looks like they have different firmware for different cameras. You could brick it if you apply the wrong one.
If I could just get it working with CamViewer I’d be happy.
Once in there you can change username and password, which may kick it off of the other account it is registered to, or there is a factory reset option under system.
Basically with the mac address and the label photo as proof you possess the camera you can get foscam to release it. I’d reach out directly to foscam support. Resetting the device and changing the password is a good idea anyway but it looks like registration to the foscam account is handled on the vendor side and will have to be deactivated from there.
I performed the reset and it had no effect. The only reason I made this post is because Foscam sent me a canned response about how their Chinese vendors undercut them on price and to try to contact their Chinese supplier if I wanted help.
I sent them proof of purchase from meh and they just won’t reply.
@Robb Reach out to foscam.com and not foscam.us, because what they said is true. Foscam.us was the US distributor and provided support for US buyers of Foscam branded products, and Foscam (China) undercut them and went to their customers directly, so foscam.us became Amcrest and does not provide Foscam general support anymore. Nor do they run the Foscam cloud service which is where your camera issue needs to be rectified. I believe that is at www.myfoscam.com – you may try to reach out to support there as well.
The power cable can’t actually fit into the d/c port on the unit. The diameter of the cord’s plug is too big for the hole. I don’t know if this thing is DOA because I can’t even plug it in… This is my second meh purchase but I gotta say it makes me pretty skeptical.
@aacero My guess is that they had so many problems with the ones that did go to users, they shipped everything back to the vendor instead. You’re lucky.
Purchased 3 FI9821P cams. Took almost a week to get set up - what a pain. No one piece of software works to access all the settings accept Internet explorer 11 with plugin. I don’t use internet Explorer and had to install it just for this. Though Foscam says otherwise, there are no plugins available for other browsers. In that regard, clear false advertising. Foscam client for Windows could not find the camera until they were setup using foscam app on Ipad. Foscam app on Ipad can’t enable SD card -only Internet Explorer with plugin can enable the SD Card. Only one of the three available IP cam search programs, the one on the CD, not those downloadable from their website, could update the cam firmware. There are plenty more issues like that. It is like Foscam has multiple teams working on their client software and they don’t coordinate with each other. Admittedly, the interface for IE 11 is very nice, but would rather not have to use such an insecure browser.
But, the camera’s are great, well worth the the cost. Very good picture quality. Everything works, and works well. Looking to buy more, Meh, so do another sale on these.
@baloo584 The plugin wouldn’t work on my Iron Browser (Chrome Clone), and I haven’t tested it with a real Chrome, but it works just fine on my Firefox. The “accept plugin” dialog is just small and I occasionally miss seeing it when I use a cam on a new IP for the first time.
I purchased the refurb model and it is the basic entry level camera. This camera works 100%, easy to setup and configure, the change between daylight to nightlight works very well and its 360 degree movement works with the Eye Spy app that I use on my iPhone. I highly recommend this model and if it comes around again for this price I will purchase another.
Well it took a week after I provided a better screenshot of the order page for them to say that they would forward it on to the RMA team and get a power supply sent to me.
I waited 11 days before letting them know I hadn’t received any updates, and it is now 12 days after that and they have finally sent me a tracking number.
I probably will buy more when they come up again, but I will be wary of their support and will probably buy my own replacement and use the one they send as a spare. They are quick to explain how they won’t support Cams sold by Foscam China, but aren’t that great at supporting the ones sold by them through Meh either.
@chienfou lol…no I just saw my old orders and I randomly decided to comment. I just started getting Meh emails again which brought my old orders back from the grave! This cam broke after a week.

Boom! These cameras rock!
No more! Speaker docks are friendlier than this!
I always feel like, somebody’s watching me.
@yakkoTDI It’s good to be Barry Gordy’s son.
If I order these, will I get some lights instead?
Not even meh. More like, sigh.
I don’t think the cheap one has a micro SD slot. Get the 720p one.
I actually would buy the highest definition one, because the ONE TIME you need that cam… is the one time you want to be able to see what the hell something/someone is, dammit.
Of course, I still have an older one that I bought from you last year that I still haven’t installed, sooooo… nope.

@cengland0 isn’t cam an engine part?
@cengland0 I used to work with a Cam. Pretty decent fellow.

@timstm despite the writeup, i don’t know why anyone wouldn’t spend the extra $10 for the full 1MP and 720p resolution vs 0.3MP and 480p.
I use 2 of these cameras as baby cam’s and they work excellent for that. I do still have a 3rd one in the box from a past Meh so I think I’ll pass…but I’m tempted to get one and use as a security camera pointing outside.
@Stallion how are they used as baby cams? can you see them live?
I have the low-res one and I’m always wishing it had a better picture. As in, I point it at my driveway through a window and I can’t tell the difference between trees, shadows, cars, etc.

@KenC it has 2 inputs in the back for a bigger speaker and bigger microphone
You can also use them to make sure you remembered to close the garage door. This is the cheap one in night vision mode.

@meh Good plan unless they steal the package containing the camera.
@callow lol good point. these come by USPS tho and should fit in our HOA mailbox package box. stupid hoa has to be good for something.
Read the Amazon reviews in ‘recent’ order, the latest reviews mentioned many various failures.

Software is extremely buggy. I’ve tried about forty apps, would not use Foscam’s app
@craigcush we use the iSpy app on my desktop for a couple other ultra cheapo wifi cameras. the software that comes with most ip cameras is the worst.
@meh I was using ispy for the foscams as well! I liked it. (have a legit 10 x 1080p camera Samsung DVR system now)
@medz oooh ooh do you have a sample of how good the picture quality is?
@craigcush On iPhone and iPad I use CamViewer. Free and works great. I think you can pay a few bucks to add audio but I never use that part.
@communist for the Samsung or foscams?
Attention!
Make sure you upload the firmware to disable call homes to foreign hosts. Foscam has disabled these a few months ago with a firmware update after a ton of controversy.

I wouldn’t worry about the firmware for that other model. It looks like they have different firmware for different cameras. You could brick it if you apply the wrong one.
If I could just get it working with CamViewer I’d be happy.
No SD card slot on my FI9821P.
@operaticus Apparently that is because it is an FI8910W, despite how the box is labeled.
I bought two and hooked up one yesterday. That one randomly disconnects from wireless. Not too big of a deal, but annoying.
The other is unusable, as it appears to have been already registered
“Failed. Device has been added by other account.”
@Robb Have you had any luck resetting it with the button (http://www.foscam.com/Cooperate/FAQinfo/id/35.html) and logging in with the IP through a browser at http://xx.xx.xx.xx:88?
Once in there you can change username and password, which may kick it off of the other account it is registered to, or there is a factory reset option under system.
@Robb This is a third party site but the article seems to be lifted from (and written in the voice of) Foscam somewhere: http://support.aceperipherals.com/kb/faq.php?id=77
Basically with the mac address and the label photo as proof you possess the camera you can get foscam to release it. I’d reach out directly to foscam support. Resetting the device and changing the password is a good idea anyway but it looks like registration to the foscam account is handled on the vendor side and will have to be deactivated from there.
@djslack @pawstoenjoy
No luck with my 9826Ps. One arrived missing its antenna and I can’t connect to the other.
The power cable can’t actually fit into the d/c port on the unit. The diameter of the cord’s plug is too big for the hole. I don’t know if this thing is DOA because I can’t even plug it in… This is my second meh purchase but I gotta say it makes me pretty skeptical.
My order still hasn’t shipped.
@aacero You might want to contact meh.com/support and see what’s going on with your order.
@Barney I have, several times. Today they finally canceled the order. I’m disappointed, but maybe I dodged a bullet, who knows?
Well … This was a piece of garbage. Probably why I haven’t bought anything from Meh in about 6 years
@diniba69
wait… you bought this, used it for 5.5 yrs (presumably) and now it’s a piece of crap. Really??
@chienfou lol…no I just saw my old orders and I randomly decided to comment. I just started getting Meh emails again which brought my old orders back from the grave! This cam broke after a week.
@diniba69
ok, that makes more sense…
