@earlyre Considering you haven’t even told your brother about your scheme to give his stuff away, yes, I meant it to be funny. Jeeze; lighten up Francis.
…and I would of gotten away with it too if it hadn’t been for that meddling @jbartus!
@jbartus when you posted that, i had no idea “lighten up Francis” was a thing.
See thats our dads name, and he’d been a bit…extra grouchy lately…
so there was a chance the person saying that was trying to clue me in “in code” if you will…
I figured the meh.com forums were a safer place to post this idea than dad’s idea of hiring someone off Craigslist… AFAIK no one has been robbed or killed on here…yet…
@earlyre Did you see the freecycle links I posted in your thread? I’ve used freecycle here in Tulsa and haven’t been knifed either If your brother is renting any crap he leaves behind probably won’t help him if he needs a reference. If he’s selling/sold the place it’s just a little bonus for the new owners!
@earlyre I have to speak up in defense of Craigslist. I’ve bought and sold many things on Craigslist without ever having been scammed, threatened, or otherwise put out. I’ve met many wonderful people and we’ve transacted business. I saved $900 on our emergency generator, $130 on the crossbars for my car’s roof rack, at least $300 on the legs I purchased for a desk I’m making, and god knows how much else. I know there have been a bad apples over the years but that’s humans for you, it’s no more or less dangerous than taking an ad out in the paper was back in the day. It’s certainly no worse than putting up yard sale signs, and if you’re helping your brother out, it would take one hell of a ballsy person to take on two grown men. :|
@earlyre You’re probably right that it’s fairly safe here, and you could ask anyone who is interested for an email address- a lot of us have throwaway ones. That way you can see if they are active members and if so if they are people you want to deal with.
@jbartus Been scammed once, the rest of the time it has worked out pretty well. Selling stuff I get sick of people not showing up… but other than that, no problems.
@jbartus Rude maybe? Self-centered? They changed their mind and don’t care if it inconveniences me? No clue. Some don’t call and don’t show. Others - no problem.
@jbartus I’ve also had buyers no show/no call - I think sometimes it’s that something changed for them and they’re too embarrassed to just message/call to say so, or just don’t have basic common courtesy. It’s part of the game of selling online like that.
@jbartus @Kidsandliz @Thumperchick
I’ve had people beg me to please hold something for them, set a meeting, change the meeting, apologize for being late, change the meeting again, promise me they will buy so i’ll still hold it, after many reschedulings and "for sure!"s, not show up, then call and ask for a discount, then not show up at all.
I learned.
But most of them have been nice.
I wont do anything w someone w/out a working, tested, phone #. They dont come to where i live. Starbucks or the police parking lot. And if they’re inconsiderate or flaky, i stop communicating w them.
Nextdoor is helpful for garage/yard sales. You can notify people in your neighborhood ( those who use the mobile nextdoor app) and nearby neighborhoods without having to post any outdoor signage.
If I was in Fort Worth, I’d probably check out what @earlyre’s brother has. At least his stuff would be free
Real funny…
@earlyre I think it was meant to be. @therealjrn didn’t object when I pointed this out in your thread.

@therealjrn rick? That you?
@earlyre if that is your brother he might not want his name advertised… you should probably call or text him.
@earlyre What’s my address so I can make sure it really is you.

@earlyre and now I know your brother’s name and your name leading to the inevitable result that your identity is now easier to locate online.
Not that I do that, just mentioning.

@jbartus I’ve sold a couple cars and a set of wheels and tires on cl myself, and I’ve not had trouble either.
But… you know…
I’m not there helping. I’m stuck back here in OH.( I couldn’t get the time off.) It’s my middle aged brother, and our 70 yr old parents…
@earlyre ah, I see. I still think CL is pretty safe but to each their own I guess.

@Kidsandliz not showing up? That’s evil. Why do you figure they didn’t show up?

@Kidsandliz that sucks.

@Thumperchick I guess I’ve just been lucky so far. Other than a couple of people who overvalued their items I’ve had smooth sailing.

@f00l that’s terrible, I’d never do that to anyone.
Advertise in your local Pennysaver or Bulletin Board type magazine. Garage sale ads are usually free and hardcore garage salers live by them.

Renting some forehead space to be tattooed on someone like CI Host did back in the day?
