@DVDBZN Yeah, they are spendy. And it will probably be a few more years before they are really a thing for home users as opposed to science and big business like they are aimed now. There are three HoloLenses sitting in my house right now- my husband has been working for them for years. At least I get to play with them once in a while. They're so damn cool. :)
@Pony Wow, three! My guess is that Microsoft won't even start selling Consumer Versions until later next year, and by then they should be more affordable and higher quality.
@DVDBZN Yep- they aren't ours- (I wish!) they're going back to the office in the morning. He had a demo thingie he was using them for. I might have the use of one this weekend, though. :)
@Pony Ah, well then I might be in a better situation. A friend of mine can afford to buy one so that we can start a developer team, of sorts. I will buy mu own eventually, but I wish I could do so sooner.
Smartphones is child's play, poser entertainment compared to the next world shaking 'Universal Interpreter '.. Imagine being able to understand any language because they will be interpreted into your language.. This invention (which is now in the creative process) will be Biblical.. One world, one language. Hot damn, I can't wait!
@awk .. Yeah but can you carry it in your pocket? Your purse? On your wrist? Use it like a bluetooth? Hanging at home on your 'puter is current.. What I'm talking about hasn't yet been introduced and THAT I can't wait.
Virtual reality was fun to play around with for a bit, but augmented reality (aka holographic computing) is where it's really at. The VR industry is estimated to grow to $15 billion by 2020, but AR is estimated to grow to $90 billion by 2020. Also, AR has more practical puroses in other industries and in general.
Hard to say without trying it once. I tried 3D TV with $200 a pair glasses for 2 minutes and got a really bad headache, that was enough to know that would not be practical.
In the early 90's, virtual feality was supposed to be right around the corner and changing the face of video games. I think one of the big companies was named Virtuality and you would see stand alone games (that is, not in an arcade) in the malls. They would cost 5 or 10 bucks to play just a couple of minutes. They weren't coin-op and didn't have credit card readers. It required an employee to man the thing to help you get "rigged up" and explain how to use the equipment. Even with that, it took almost your entire game time to figure out what you were doing.
@DrWorm I remember that! The program running when I tried it out was a relatively simple one, just a run-and-gun with a special gun controller. The helmet was bulky, resolution and framerate low. The tech is here to do a better job now, though.
@DrWorm I remember that also. Although I don't ever get dizzy playing first person shooters, that experience made me dizzy. And yeah, I had just enough time to figure out what I was doing, and game over. Laggy, dropped frames if you turned your head. I'm sure it's much better now.
VR is absolutely the future, but it's not as close as we think. We're probably a good 10 years away from mass VR, 15 years from it being in everyone's home/workplace/grandmas house.
@ChadP naw that first gen is gonna happen this year.... (samsung, sony, valve and facebook)... I bet it's more like 5 years 'till it's standard... especially with the phone companies seeing this as another value added benefit to a smartphone (ala samsung)
I played DOOM on a VR headset at an internet cafe sometime in the late 90's, got an ELSA 3D revelator in 2000, sometimes watch 3D movies, and have periodically used Google Cardboard. No matter what interface, I always find that the 3D effect "wears off" after a short while. Anyone else have that problem?
I'm waiting for the VR system that will let me see reality, but replace certain people with an alternate of my choosing. That will let me see the world the way I now see it in my head. I already routinely replace any image of Mitch McConnell with Beaker from Sesame Street, Paul Ryan with Eddie Munster, Hillary Clinton with Ms Gulch/WWotW from The Wizard of Oz, President Obama with Mace Windu, Joe Biden with the Cheshire Cat, Bernie Sanders with Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof, Ted Cruz with Rodrigo Borgia, and Donald Trump with either Spongebob Squarepants or the Red Queen (Off with their heads!) on alternate days.
@rockblossom @Pony I have everything for this except the HoloLens, which I will eventually get. I'm somewhat reluctant to do this, but if you would like something like that sooner, then you can make a donation here: https://www.gofundme.com/hololens and I can try making such an app.
@Pavlov enjoy the future
@Pavlov
Baaaaaaaaaaaa Humbug
@awk
@Pavlov Shhhhhh! Some of us are counting on the sheeple to fund the new tech today so the rest of us can use it tomorrow.
HoloLens! HoloLens! HoloLens!
(Not Virtual Reality, but Augmented Reality.)
@Pony
That is what I'm really excited for. I even got the invitation to buy the Developer Edition! But I can't afford to buy it yet. :(

Really rude to watch virtual reality porn in the middle of a date.

@unkabob You can do that with Google Translate:

@unkabob
Whatever tech gets it more creatively wrong in real time will be the most fun.
@awk and even skype can do this...

It's been a pretty long 'flash'.

@rockblossom That could probably be done with a HoloLens if someone developed an app. I know I'd use it. :)
