On Black Friday I will be pretty much continuously pooping out my Thanksgiving dinner. I’ll see what’s happening on Cyber Monday. (FYI: the name “cyber monday” makes me cringe)
I get up at 4:20am to go to the nearby store for very specific ‘Santa’ gifts… Santa brings socks, slippers, underwear, pillows, and sheets… All of which are half price from 5-1… Then… Done.
For the first time ever, I bought something this morning on a Black Friday sale, online. I’d been looking for a Fitbit like mine to give my sister but the $150 price tag was daunting. Target had them today for $95, and I picked it up after Thanksgiving dinner on my way home. No crowds at the pick up counter. Great deal/experience. I usually avoid Black Friday like the plague.
Since the late 70’s, I have gone shopping with my parents every Black Friday as my birthday day out. We don’t go out to the crazy 4 AM sales but do spend most of the day shopping starting with breakfast at a diner and ending with dinner at a nice restaurant. Most stores are busy but the workers and customers are friendly and courteous with a very few exceptions.
The ads all year round for black Friday sales are making me hate the day.
@callow I used to go out all night with two friends after Thanksgiving dinner. We’d exchange copies of our shopping lists and spread out in the stores collecting everything in our assigned quadrants, communicating by cell phone for color or pattern choices, and meeting in the middle to sort stuff for checkout. We’d start with Kmart and Walmart, take a coffee and donut break, then start hitting the predawn sales and working our way through our lists. We’d finish not long after sun-up and head to a pancake house for breakfast. After breakfast we’d stop in at Walgreens as it isnt crowded and stocks plenty of BF stuff. Then home to sleep, or in my case host a cookout and board game day. I live in a city where most people are friendly, you’re more likely to find people sharing depleted items from their cart than fighting over them. It’s also temperate here, it only gets down to about 50 at night so standing in line a bit waiting for a store to open isn’t uncomfortable. One of my friends passed suddenly and the other is disabled so we can’t really manage without him, so no more BF madness for me. Instead I’m petsitting my first Rover.com client and still hosting board game day.
@f00l Maggie does like me, when the plumber came yesterday to put my swamp cooler to bed for the winter, she was extremely protective, to the point that I had to lock her in the bathroom cuz I was afraid she was going to bite someone. Pretty funny as she’s 1/3 the size of my guys. She has a sweet face, but she’s pretty clearly got a significant amount of Rhodesian Ridgeback in her, and those are very good protection dogs.
@dptalia What did you guys play this year? In past years we’ve played Advanced Civ all day on Black Friday. But it’s hard to get these short attention span Millennials to play a 12-hour game, so we switched over to playing some shorter games. At BGG.con I scored both expansions for Terraforming Mars, the alternative Maps and the pre-release Venus Next expansion, so it was the headliner game. Then we played Alhambra and Agricola, and wrapped up with Machi Koro.
@moondrake I would have LOVED to have spent 12 hours on one game, and had hoped to do something like Eclipse or Power Grid. We played Mission Red Planet, 7 Wonders, Roll for the Galaxy, Carcassone, Careers, and a couple more that I can’t remember.
@dptalia I picked up the expansion cards for Power Grid which add a bunch of high capacity power plants (wind power 8!), so that will be hitting the table soon. I also picked up Power Grid First Sparks, which is sort of cave man Power Grid. Sounds dumb but has good reviews. Race for the Galaxy is one of the new games so we’ll be playing it soon as well. I got 12 new games and expansions for two others at the con so we’ll be playing through those for a while.
during any big sale online i don’t peruse the site/deals but instead just scan down the wishlists i keep year round. if anything i was already planning to buy for someone or something i really want/need is super marked down, i’ll grab it if i can. so far there’s one site i was planning on shopping at offering free shipping today, so that will save me a few bucks on some small things.
it’s like those crazy coupon people - even if something is a great deal, it’s really not if i’m spending money on something i normally would have spent $0 on. so i try not to get lured into random ‘deals’ when there’s other stuff for the same money i actually want/need.
as for shopping in person, absolutely not. especially if the store is open really late or early, or on a holiday. let your employees have time with their families or just away from the bullshit for a day or two. and stop putting them in dangerous situations with these sales that incite mobs. i appreciate that there are people who rely on black friday deals to be able to afford to get gifts for their families, (and that it’s a privilege for me to be able to sit online at home) but i just think there are other ways these billion dollar cooperations can offer them where everybody wins. (don’t worry, i understand they’re not in the business of everyone winning )
Shopping was completed Wednesday. I only have one friend that I shop for the Christmas holiday. Then there’s the kids at the vet’s office. You know, that place where we’ve spent so much time and money this year. Meh’s offerings during the year pretty much took care of that. (I just counted, over forty individual items? Holy crap!)
They treat us so well that this is one way to say thank you to all of them, even the ones behind the scenes that we never see. It used to be making massive amounts of cookies, but my back just can’t handle it any longer.
So, with the exception of wrapping paper, I’m done.
Which brings us to the exception, Meh. Will you offer tons of wrapping paper? I need tons.
Today will be laundry and putting the finishing touches on the first set of four holiday cards I made. There were five, but a hissy fit ruined one of them. I’ll keep that one as an example to myself that hissy fits are, for the most part, not productive.
I’m fortunate enough that I have people to take care of that for me while I binge on leftovers.

If I had any money, I’d poke around online to find some deals on gift stuff. But since I’m broke, I’ll just pretend I’m above such nonsense.
I pre-shop for the entire week so that it lands before thanks giving so I can avoid the mass idiocy.
If I find I am out of something I make an after-midnight run in a few days.
How did “Do all my Christmas shopping on Meh all year” not make the list?
@hchavers Yes! This!

@awk TMI
I have found previous black friday sale items to be subpar versions of similar non-sale items. Some deals are too good to be true.

@inanna Fidget spinners? lol!
I went out to Staples for a deal on Black Friday 5 years ago. My family still talks about that.
A. No, I don’t remember what the deal was.
B. My family is boring.
To quote Narfcake: “Reason: I’m (probably) getting too old for this shit.”

@Fuzzalini I’m heading to Costco for the same thing. Fitbit Charge 2 for $100 with and extra band. Grab and go!

I bet your human and canine clients all adore you.

I host an all-day board game marathon every Black Friday. Much better than shopping!

Reporting live from the parking lot of Mediocre HQ, where I’m waiting for someone to let me in
@woodhouse Are you in a tent? Looking to score a deal or two? Maybe you’re just confused about the concept of Black Friday shopping.
@sligett I’ve been here all week just waiting to find some deals.
@woodhouse
But you already scored the “employment” deal.
