@sillyheathen I didn’t see life of Brian or much of their other stuff till years after I saw the search for the holy grail. As that’s the best known and you known/published. One of us nerds had a DVD copy in highschool and streaming didn’t exist. But I have to agree that’s probably my favorite even though I have more holy grail quotes stacked in my brain
The punchline to seeing the movie in a theater was a bunch or “protesters” trying to let the viewers know what they just watched was about a false messiah.
Holy Grail is certainly my favorite. Just the whole thing from start to finish makes me laugh and quote it all the time. However, Life of Brian has so many moments that make it a very, very close second. That team was just so brilliant and they changed the entire course of comedy at the time.
I literally fell out of my seat in the movie theater laughing during the Mr. Creosote part of The Meaning of Life when it was first released while I was in high school.
@macromeh
If we’re going with films they’ve started in or directed then that opens up a whole new can! I love Terry’s stuff! And then there Fawlty towers……
Sooo…my bf had never seen life of Brian so we decided to watch it recently. I hadn’t seen it for years. Opening scene, someone’s in blackface, which I DID NOT remember from before. Somehow I never noticed it. Cringe. Reg’s attitude in the Loretta scene also didn’t age well. I think he disengaged at that point…we didn’t finish the movie.
I’m hesitant to revisit my favorite, Holy Grail, now. Though I can’t think of anything that offensive off hand…
@endi1276 I mean it’s a bunch of white guys pretending they matter and clopping around then some white serfs give them some shit. I don’t recall the specific scenes from life of brian you’re referring to but. You either like their humor and know to take it with a grain of salt or you don’t.
@unksol Yeah, we don’t take blackface “with a grain of salt” in this house. I love their silliness, but if some jokes don’t age well, they don’t age well. I don’t have to keep accepting them as funny once I know better.
I haven’t watched that interview yet but I know at least one of my relatives stopped being a fan after watching it.
Blackface in and of itself is indicative of systemic racism. There were black people in the UK at that time, yet they didn’t hire any…or, you know, just play it as a white guy. It is what it is but i don’t have to like it, nor will i make any excuses for it. It was quite a shock to realize i had never noticed something like that before. I guess I’ll have to give holy grail another watch soon. I know a lot of the movie by heart but I’m still a bit nervous that i may have glossed over something in my memory.
@endi1276@unksol
So do you avoid all things Shakespeare forevermore just because all of the women’s roles were played by men?
Wait until you watch Blazing Saddles, if you think Life of Brian crossed the line. Not to mention all the men body-shamed in movies like History of the World, Part 1.
/giphy biggus dickus
@endi1276 I’m not trying to make any excuse for it or how you feel about it. And again I can’t recall those scenes. I just went looking for what was said and they happened to have a very long read of an interview with john cleese from 2017. And it isn’t just about that also minority jokes. It does not portray him in the best light from a current view point. was not really expecting that from him. So I made sure I linked it if you want to re-evaluate your opinion of Monty Python as a whole. But some context should apply.
If you just want to flush old shows you liked over that issue that comes from another country with a different culture that is of course up to you.
@endi1276@mike808 I don’t think we need to pick a thing here. Or argue it out. It is what it is. I found what John Cleese said a little eh… But it someone doesn’t want to watch Monty Python anymore who cares. Let’s just leave it.
@endi1276@unksol
Hindsight is always 20/20. Even the founders of the Confederacy truly believed they were enlightened because enslaving other people (that didn’t look like them) was doing The Lord’s work as a humanitarian act of selflessness.
My point is that every culture has problems when judging the past in the context of today.
But yeah, a few less Monty Python fans only means more for the rest of us.
@endi1276@mike808 mmm you lost me at Confederacy. Completely. That is a whole different thing than "well we didn’t happen to have a black guy on staff because they are such a low percentage of the population and this isn’t even a thing but might be in 40 years use some makeup on one of the very few actors we can pay. But I don’t want to have that fight either
@mike808 I’m a bit surprised at you, using tactics that get used against you quite often in these forums. But, to play along, yes i will avoid all of those oh-so-popular recordings of all-male casts.
Because that practice Has Since been rectified, your point is obviously moot, as I’m sure you know. I never liked Mel Brooks as much anyway…possibly because of the offensive stuff although i wasnt as aware of it back then. Some stuff changes from funny to uncomfortable over time.
I’m not saying anyone else has to think differently about old comedy. I’m just relaying my experience with it.
@Star2236 are you absolutely sure you don’t care about the aerodynamics of a swallow carrying a coconut? If so you are absolutely entitled to your opinion.
@Star2236@unksol
Well, then it’s a good thing for the rest of us that you don’t get to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you.
@mike808 not really sure what you are driving for. I was in highschool when it aired we did not have cable. I saw a few episodes on my friends cable that we found hilarious.
I haven’t rewatched the whole thing after Netflix sorted out the rights. I pretty much like all stand up comic specials they can give me including a few of Dave’s
@mike808@unksol
I don’t care for the office either, the Chappelle I watch and most of its hilarious but some of its stupid. I’m weird I like grandmas boy, 40 year old virgin, that’s my boy, old school but usually hate all things with Jim Carey, will Ferrell and stuff like Monty python arent my types of humor.
@mike808@Star2236 the Monty Python show and generally skit shows can be hit or miss their movies were pretty good. If you didn’t like the department of funny walks. Def not for you. If you have never seen the movies you might like one. But is it worth the time? Meh
My favorite is the play “Spamalot”. Favorite song is “I’m not dead yet” so much so that I bought a tee shirt with that on the front which I wore every time I had a doctor’s appt telling them that info was important as it was one less thing they had to check about me.
I love Holy Grail but Life of Brian hands down my favorite!
/giphy always look on the bright side of life!

Still love this bit from LoB
All of them.
Jabberwocky!

Do ‘Brazil’, ‘Time Bandits’ or ‘A Fish Called Wanda’ count?
@macromeh

Four 10-packs of towels in Saint Louis
One could even include “Jabberwocky” on that basis.

I will say there are things in this interview that make you cringe from an American point of view.

But I don’t think that the uk was dealing with major systemic racist issues at the time it was written.
The history of the British Empire… Ugh. But a snapshot in 1979…
@unksol Yeah, we don’t take blackface “with a grain of salt” in this house. I love their silliness, but if some jokes don’t age well, they don’t age well. I don’t have to keep accepting them as funny once I know better.

@endi1276 @mike808 @unksol
I not really sure that’s quite how it works…
Yellowbeard was sort of a Monty Python film.
I hate them all. Not my type of comedy.
@Star2236 are you absolutely sure you don’t care about the aerodynamics of a swallow carrying a coconut? If so you are absolutely entitled to your opinion.
@Star2236 @unksol
It depends. Are we talking about a coconut-laden African or European swallow?
@Star2236 @unksol
Well, then it’s a good thing for the rest of us that you don’t get to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you.
@mike808 @Star2236 lol if he doesn’t find it funny he doesn’t find it funny. Obligatory shrubbery.
I don’t find “the office” at all funny. Some episodes ok but I could not just will not binge watch it. It grind my nerves. To each their own
@unksol Just so you don’t feel so lonely about not finding The Office humorous, I also don’t find it more than occasionally tepidly amusing.
So, what do you think of the Dave Chapelle Show?
I think there is some truth to the duality of comedy and tragedy, and the eye of the beholder.
@mike808 not really sure what you are driving for. I was in highschool when it aired we did not have cable. I saw a few episodes on my friends cable that we found hilarious.

@mike808 @Star2236 well. You know what you like. None of my business to convince you otherwise
@unksol FTFY.
