@NapkinEater aye. I’d take maybe another audio pro or a reasonably skilled musician doing the selecting, but if I’m spending any even vaguely serious money on something to go on or in my ears, I’m pretty particular about it. To do otherwise risks hearing damage and also bad sound.
I don’t use earbuds, but I generally don’t think it’s a great idea to buy expensive electronics for someone unless they’ve asked for that specific thing.
People prioritize brands/features/designs/whatever so differently that there’s a significant chance you won’t get what they actually want. At best, they can regift, but depending on their financial situation, the thing might sit in their closet collecting dust, or they might use it every day wishing they had the thing they actually want.
For anyone who is really into music, I think earbuds are too personal a gift because the sound and fit can vary so much. Both parties are better off if cash is given, allowing them to buy what suits them. Otherwise, cheap and solid is the obvious way to go.
Real headphones first and then high quality ear buds.
This poll is not looking good for Meh tonight.
I am a fancy earbuds person, but would not want someone to get them for me unless I did the research and then told them exactly what I wanted.
I’d rather they get me a cheap pair that I can use as backups and something else.

Cheap but solid buds, of which I use just the right with a custom ear plug, have become my hands-free driving solution.
How about none of the above. I’m not an ear buds person at all.
@ironcheftoni Oh come on, upgrade and join us. One of us, one of us!

Buds don’t stay in my ears, so I would want the cheap ones.
Quality over quantity
I bought some real $$ ones @ Belltone, They are custom fitted & programed for me with Bluetooth!
Since I wear hearing aids…
headphones!
