I was working at a movie theater when No Country for Old Men came out. I forgot to get around to seeing it until it was moved into the smaller sized auditoriums. But our theater said in the paper it would play it on the biggest screen even though it had been out for weeks for winning some best picture award so I got it watch it in a 500 seat theater with about two other people in attendance.
One of the local AMC theaters usually has a "Day at the Movies" showcase, where you can go see a bunch of the Best Pictures nominees back-to-back in a full day showing- the last one was 4 movies, running from 12 noon to 12 AM with breaks in between and one for dinner. Probably going to do that again.
@dashcloud And here I thought an encrypted VPN and a good torrent client was the way to go - I had no idea I could see a movie at a theater. People still do that?
The movie selections are almost always focused on topics that do not represent the mainstream and too often politically biased. For the most part, I think the selections are jokes. With that said, it just so happens that the most talented people in the film industry are not mainstream and are politically biased, so I expect that from movies. I do enjoy good art so I usually filter out the propaganda and watch well made movies with a grain of salt.
I find the nominations irrelevant. I like what I like and it rarely is what the critics like, but sometimes it is. Like, how did Pulp Fiction not win best picture in 1995?
I love awards shows, but I always fucking miss them. Always. It's like I hear nothing about them until it's over, and suddenly everyone's talking about them. Happened with the Golden Globes*. It won't happen with the Oscars this year, no sir. I'm finding out the air date and setting an alert for myself. I WILL NOT BE DEPRIVED OF SPARKLY DRESSES AND AWKWARD SPEECHES.
*I downloaded it so I'm gonna watch it some time this weekend.
@Jocosity i stopped caring a long time ago, and now i live in hollywood and it is unbearable. i actually work a block away form where they hold it, and they shut down streets for 2 weeks setting up for it.
Forrest Gump over Pulp Fiction was understandable. I don't agree, but understandable. Any faith I had remaining in the Oscars went away when 'Shakespeare in Love' beat 'Saving Private Ryan', and 'The Passion' was not even nominated in any major category.
Dude. The Academy Awards are about how those people who regard themselves highly regard the movies they make. They're breaking their arms patting themselves on the backs. I'm in it for the show, but I don't particularly care what they say is the best of anything.
Yesterday, I watched a movie from 2004, in HD. IMDB tells me it won some stuff. It was on a "free" channel, which meant we had to fast forward through the commercials on the DVR.
The TV show All in the Family, was something worth watching when it was fresh, but only when it was fresh. That is an extreme counter example. Most movies and TV shows that were great when they came out, are still great.
I almost never watch brand new movies. There are plenty of great movies I haven't seen yet. I might as well watch the cheap ones. Also, that way I have complete control over the snacks.
The 'academy awards' are an inside job. Wake up sheeple.
@JonT I do know that the acadamy sprays chemtrails over LA to influence the voting.
@JonT NO NO! DON'T SAY THAT!!

Still mad about how bullshit the animation category is.
@WilhelmScreamer No Lego Movie!! :(

I stopped caring when The Lego Movie got snubbed.
@Jocosity Yep. That's when I learned the hard lesson that not everything is awesome.
@SSteve Everything is Awesome when you are part of a team. I guess we are not part of a team...

@PocketBrain Winston Wolf said it better (replace the patting on the backs part)
