10tl;dr: vote for my SXSW talk over here

Admittedly, this talk was not created with the Meh community in mind, but you might find out a few secrets or hear some good stories. Even if you don’t really care or understand my gibberish, it would be awesome if you could give me a little support and vote for my panel. If you’re a true overachiever, comments and social shares are awesome but that sounds difficult. Know that if my Panel makes the cut then my fellow Mediocre peeps and Mehtizens attending will be able to come and heckle me mercilessly.
Here’s a quick boil on what I’ll be covering with my panel submission (Slideshare Deck Here).
With so many definitions and views of what Business Development (Biz Dev) is, it’s easy to miss out on the layers of value it provides entrepreneurs and young companies.
I’ve often seen Biz Dev utilized in too limiting a capacity. Commonly it gets horseshoe'd into basic sales/cold calling, negotiation and relationship building. There’s so much more Biz Dev can do for entrepreneurs.
In this talk I’ll share anecdotes and war stories from the early days of a mediocre corp to my past of partnering with brands like Samsung, HP, Toshiba, Cisco and the ever fun Walmart. I also Co-Founded a small software company 4+ years ago that’s still growing and thriving (yawn). Here are some varying story highlights.
- Our business is DOOMED but we’ve designed this awesome product…what now?
- Ok, we’ve created a crazy brand name fraught with negativity. How the hell will this resonate outside our walls? Time to test this crap.
- We’re a profitable company but we’re creating no long term value (which really sucks when you own a piece of it). Let’s change our whole approach and re-brand the company. Sounds easy enough, right? Hah.
- Congrats, you’ve partnered with Walmart. Oh shit, you’ve partnered
with Walmart.
My talk isn’t fully formed yet so I’m sure I’ll come up with more compelling stuff should it get chosen. Then we can party at SXSW mediocre style (hint hint).

Voted and interested. I look forward to hearing it.
@Thumperchick aww, thanks
Some folks here might be a little confused by what Biz Dev specifically is. "Biz Dev" is just an abbreviation for "Business Devil Summoning". Now you may think, "Woah, stop right there, the Devil is bad!" Don't worry, you won't summon the Biblical Satan (several years of attempts by a certain large database software firm have proved totally fruitless). Despite the name, you'll just be summoning what experts call a 'minor demonic imp'. The imp can help your business in a number of ways, ensuring certain unfortunate things happen to competitors and their supply chains, and even brewing up some delicious wormwood coffee for late nights at the office. Just think of him/her/it as an intern straight from Hell itself! You don't even need to pay your imp, although the summoning involves envoking a certain covenant in ancient Latin involving something called a "blood price", but don't worry about that right now! There can unfortunately be minor setbacks from the presence of your imp, such as brimstone in the air causing eye redness, arcane symbols appearing on the CEO's face (try Lava soap), and attracting the attention of Jeff Bezos. But for the most part the worst that will happen is the occasional low-level employee will go missing and a small pile of bones will be found in a supply closet... but think of this as an annoyance compared to the benefits! Don't delay, try Biz Dev[il Summoning] today... uh, tonight, it actually only works at night for some reason! Have fun!
@Starblind Whoa, didn't realize the questionable other realm opportunities we had right at our horn tips.

@denboy Is it easier to work with Walmart or Cisco?
@dashcloud Walmart was tougher for me. Both would challenge you to deliver on your contract but Walmart often had impossible expectations coupled with terribly inaccurate data.
@denboy Thanks!
@dashcloud There's much more to that story too but post would become a mini novel. Thanks for your interest.
@denboy Voted for you!
