@yakkoTDI or follow science and stay on standard time, so that noon on the clock at the center of each time zone is at solar noon as it’s intended to be.
so that noon on the clock at the center of each time zone is at solar noon
ISTR looking at that a number of years back, and discovering that the railroads’ gerrymandering makes a mockery of the “noon in the center of the time zone” principle. (Plus, noons aren’t exactly 24 hours apart.)
@f00l@yakkoTDI The science also documents at standard time is closer to our natural “biological clock” and healthier for us (although I’d suspect people physically very close to the next time zone may not be as “included” in that.
@craigthom Now there’s a practical solution! … except for UTC. Using UTC would be an enormous and bizarre societal change on how clock time corresponds to the daily solar cycle. We already have something we can use that does fit into our use and perception of solar and clock time, though: standard time. It’s the one, and I believe the only, representation of time on a clock that is agreed to throughout the world. In contrast, daylight saving time isn’t even agreed to within our own country, and it defers to those who favor later clock-time sunsets vs. those who favor earlier clock-time sunrises. Science defines standard time, even though as @werehatrack points out, it’s been “gerrymandered” by people, but the 24-zone standard time system is still the closest thing we have to a universally-accepted representation of time on a clock.
@ItalianScallion@werehatrack I have to deal with people in different time zones and countries for work, and UTC use for everyone would help. I live near the border between Eastern and Central time, and, near me, it’s a crazy border that hooks east for a long way. It’s difficult for people in India to grasp, especially since they have no time zones at all.
They also don’t understand that state lines aren’t walls and, for example, that Florence, Kentucky, is much closer to Cincinnati than to Louisville, or that Clarksville, Indiana, is much closer to Louisville than to Indianapolis. But that’s mostly due to not bothering to look at a fucking map.
@craigthom@werehatrack UTC certainly makes sense in your case, as it does in my ham radio hobby when talking to people all over the country or world. I was thinking more along the lines of using UTC in everyday life. That would be a huge leap for the public and one I’m sure would get enormous backlash.
And maps, yeah. They can be quite useful in international situations. <sarcasm off>
@craigthom@ItalianScallion@werehatrack
My only problem with going UTC universally is that it would make it tough to decide whether it was daytime or night time when you pulled up the “current time” for a place. Unless you knew the offset and did the math you couldn’t tell. Now if I look at what the current time is in Nepal (for instance) I have a good idea if it’s morning or afternoon there.
@Kyeh@sillyheathen@yakkoTDI There has been talk up here in New England about wanting to move us into the Atlantic time zone. We are, after all, along the eastern border of the Eastern time zone and Maine is, in fact, inside the longitude-defined Atlantic time zone. The problem, though, is that such a change would put Boston and New York in different time zones which isn’t really a good idea considering the large amount of people and commerce movement between the two areas.
@ItalianScallion@Kyeh@unksol@yakkoTDI it is and from what I was reading, multiple states have had voters pass the removal of DST but there hasn’t been ACTUAL legislation from the state level for various reasons. Super frustrating tbh. If they’d just let the west coast get rid of it, I bet most would follow suit soon after.
@ItalianScallion@Kyeh@sillyheathen@yakkoTDI I bet… Wtf is it… Polymarket (I have never been more disgusted…) that if the west coast did it. EVERY SINGLE REPUBLICAN. would IMMEDIATELY denounce it as some sort of made up culture war because California. Completely ignoring their voters and everything they have ever said
@ItalianScallion@Kyeh@unksol@yakkoTDI I wouldn’t give a royal rat’s arse what anyone else thought, if they’d just do away with it here. Anyone that is willing to cut off their nose to spite their face because someone “they don’t like” did something, is welcome to go ahead and break all their mirrors. I have no time for illogical petty bullshit in my life. This hootenanny horseshit of changing biological and analog clocks for no bloody reason, I am so done with.
@ItalianScallion@Kyeh@sillyheathen@yakkoTDI I both completely agree with you. And I completely believe they would start bitching that the west coast was planning to secede.
@sillyheathen Indianapolis stays on standard time year round. When that was the nearest airport to me when I lived in both IL and IN I had to remember it was in a different time zone from the rest IN for part of the year. I nearly missed my flight the first time I used that airport as I didn’t know.
@ItalianScallion@Kyeh@sillyheathen@unksol@yakkoTDI Actually from what I’ve read, both parties in Oregon are quite ready and willing to do away with the time change, and have proposed legislation several times. But it only makes sense if Washington and California also switch - apparently they are the holdup.
@ItalianScallion@Kyeh@macromeh@sillyheathen@unksol@yakkoTDI California voted for doing away with time change several years ago but apparently the federal government has to approve it in some manner LOL like they’ll approve anything the California Oregon or Washington want. Are the positive note British Columbia changes for the last time tonight
@Kidsandliz@sillyheathen Indiana as an almost whole USED to stay on standard time. For my entire childhood. We used to get to watch some shows half the year and then they were just after bedtime. I think JAG was one
Since 2006 most of the state is on eastern time. A few corners picked central. But Indianapolis is in the same stupidity with all of us
@f00l …and I just might be planning that trip. Our local D1 football squad (NDSU Bison) just joined the Mountain West Football conference which is the same conference as Hawaii…That’s right, North Dakota & Hawaii are now in the same conference!! (Talk about a long distance relationship! )
We should, but oh wow did AZ screw me up when I flew in there.
Midnight flight into Arizona from the East Coast during the normal DST changeover. It was before smartphones were common so when I got there… Not knowing that AZ didn’t do DST, while crossing multiple timezones on red-eye flight, I thought I entered into some time vortex. And I definitely missed my meeting.
@Aetherwizard@therealjrn actually I think it’s entirely doctor who. I think every major thing I can find the doctor who episode… And not the twilight zone.
@pakopako I don’t disagree. But for a lot of people that would probably just mean more time for a second job. I feel like that should be addressed before I get a 4 day work week. And they are both kinda fantasies
@macromeh@pakopako I agree this should be a thing. Or maybe the 6 hour thing.
A lot of us are paid a salary so why is it even a thing? I provide the service you wanted… And I’m probably working more than 40 hours.
But a lot of jobs require someone physically being there. To do the thing. We don’t all get get to work from home.
Just raise the minimum wage or stop companies from clearly illegal corruption when employees try creating unions. Ffs the rich assholes are rich enough. And fucking weird
The book is way fun. The kinda book everyone seems to love. And doesn’t make the reader work way too hard.
For a while it was easily the most recommended book in the various book talk subreddits.
I find Gosling to be an amazing actor. But I’ve mostly seen him in comedic roles. I’m missed most films of the prev 20 years including most of his.
I also won’t bother going to the theater. I might go to the theater if they do another live flying (almost no cgi) Top Gun film. Because I’ll be drooling over the flying.
But otherwise I don’t like the theater experience.
If you like Gosling … a recent film of his that’s wonderful never got the $ and traction it deserved.
Prob because it came out right after Barbieheimer.
It was v good, so good there should be a series of them.
And fun.
(No “I’ve got to get in the mindset to watch this serious film” vibe. Just enjoy.
@f00l it’s on all the late night shows and SNL if you can find one better. Like I said I haven’t read the book and have no idea if the movie will be good. They ruin them a lot. Hoping it’s good
The Fall Guy film is a re-worked and updated spinoff of the Lee Majors TV show from way back when.
Lee Majors gets a cameo in the film
The film was written and directed by former stunt guys, but either they have a real gift for dialogue character and narrative, or they had some quality writing assistance.
And a bunch of the stunts in the film were record setting. Just for the hell if it. And they made Gosling do a few of his own stunts.
(He freely admits to being fine not having had to do any of them.)
And some of the stunts in the film are really “specialist professionals only”. I doubt whether Tom Cruise would’ve done them - these stunts are so specialized that most stunt persons say “call the expert” when that sort of stunt is proposed.
Gosling had I think 3-4 stunt doubles and he took them with him do all the promo convention appearances and the like. They even got the mike at appearances. Gosling wanted to make sure they got the glory.
They had a parkour specialist, a fight specialist, a fire specialist, and a fall specialist at the least. Maybe some guys did more than one speciality.
And … of course the film is over the top in plot and action and moviemaking jokes and it’s fun and a bit inane. Including some ridiculous so called “plot points”.
This isnt a failure of proofreading or an “audience won’t notice” thing, it’s deliberate “share the absurd in-joke moments and go with them”.
So …
I don’t know Hooper but since The Fall Guy is terrific, why not give it a try?

I don’t care… just pick one and stick with it. Every time the clocks change there are more accidents on the roads, and, interestingly, more heart-attacks and strokes (probably from disruption to routine). It’s been proven it doesn’t save energy (which is why it was created)… just pick a time and stick with it.
I think whether you want always day-light-saving or always standard time probably depends on latitude. Up north with more limited day times, you may need that extra hour in the mornings. Down South, I’d rather have the extra hour in the evenings when I’m up and about to appreciate it… I don’t need the sun up before I’m up.
@OnionSoup not just latitude but lark vs owl and probably what hours you work. I live in SoCal but I am a lark and loved it when i could start work at 6 AM
There are bad things caused by changing time zones… there aren’t really any measurable benefits. (besides some people’s preferences)
The only semi-legitimate reason I ever hear, is kids waiting for school bus in the dark. Which really is more of an issue the further North you go.
Can we not just change school schedules instead of the entire timekeeping system twice a year? That also goes for, if there are some niche industries out there that for some reason are impacted… just let them change their schedule rather than all of society.
@OnionSoup@yakkoTDI EXACTLY. Here’s another similar stupid situation. Kids now go back to school in the middle of August, instead of in September as they used to. But as temperatures get hotter, these schools without air conditioning are too hot. Yet all they talk about here is trying to get more $ to install air conditioning, instead of starting the school year later!
They say "oh, then it will just be too hot in the spring. But normally it’s less hot in May/June than it is in August.
@Kyeh@OnionSoup@yakkoTDI School District should set their calendar depending a pod where they live. The only time that becomes a problem is if high school ends too late for college to start. And I can’t see that happening.
Preach
We should spring forward and leave it there.
@yakkoTDI or follow science and stay on standard time, so that noon on the clock at the center of each time zone is at solar noon as it’s intended to be.

@yakkoTDI @cfg83 Okay, spring forward = Arizona. I’m all for it.
@yakkoTDI Science documents it is healthier for people to stay on standard time in a number of ways.
@Kidsandliz @yakkoTDI
I susiect it’s that science documents it’s extra unhealthy to jump back and forth.
I would like Tx to be on DST all the time.
I understand that might not work for every state.
@f00l @yakkoTDI The science also documents at standard time is closer to our natural “biological clock” and healthier for us (although I’d suspect people physically very close to the next time zone may not be as “included” in that.
@Kyeh IKR?
I really hate the time change bullshit. So annoying.
@Pony I don’t know how I didn’t do this sooner but I absolutely concur.
We should just use UTC and never worry about time zones or time changes.
People who like later sunsets can adjust their own hours instead of forcing everyone to do it.
There’s no law that says businesses and schools can’t change their hours seasonally.
@craigthom Now there’s a practical solution! … except for UTC.

@sillyheathen Florida actually passed it too but it requires something from the federal level before when can change.
@sillyheathen @yakkoTDI Same for Colorado.
@Kyeh @sillyheathen @yakkoTDI There has been talk up here in New England about wanting to move us into the Atlantic time zone. But as temperatures get hotter, these schools without air conditioning are too hot. Yet all they talk about here is trying to get more $ to install air conditioning, instead of starting the school year later!
They say "oh, then it will just be too hot in the spring. But normally it’s less hot in May/June than it is in August.
@Kyeh @OnionSoup @yakkoTDI School District should set their calendar depending a pod where they live. The only time that becomes a problem is if high school ends too late for college to start. And I can’t see that happening.
@Cerridwyn @OnionSoup @yakkoTDI
I agree.

Unfortunately, changing school schedules can mean having to change work schedules.
We tied ourselves into this and it’s going to be a bother getting out.
(Personally hope we get out of this horrible practice before March 2028)
