@jouest Yes indeed, I rearrange my sentences all the time! I’m thinking the not sleeping for going on 30 hours might have something to do with it as well.

Yup.
I ask my students if they would take exams legally drunk. No hands go up. Then I tell my students about the research that if they stay up all night before an exam that they are, in effect, taking it as if they were legally drunk with respect to cognitive performance. That shocks a bunch. I also telling them going to bed on time, getting 4 hours of sleep and then getting up to study they do better than staying up really late and then getting their 4 hours of sleep (due to sleep cycle stuff).
@jouest@Lynnerizer Our second-youngest cat, Squeaker, is my nap QC supervisor and inspector. He insists that I nap properly, and will lay with his head on my arm or my hip to make sure.
Favorite holiday, bar none. Best time of year (Autumn), low pressure on the guests (there’s no expectation of bringing gifts), least commercialized of all the US Holidays, and generally just a relaxing time with family.
@Flipflops4evah@jouest What about snacks? Reminded me…
Oh yeah, I totally forgot about the appetizers! Dopey me! Sometimes I’ll even eat a variety of different appetizers for dinner! YUM!
It became a big deal in not a great way when I went through being expected to accommodate relatives who were rude about showing up on time or having a new weird restrictive diet every damn year! It’s much less complicated now, for which I’m thankful!
On Thanksgiving Day 2018, my partner finally succumbed to pancreatic cancer at 11:20PM. I was by her side at the time.
I have not celebrated the date during the years since then.
This year I will probably go to my daughter’s house for dinner since they are planning to do the traditional spread. I am my daughter’s only local relative who is likely to be present.
@werehatrack much hugs
in 1981 my mother died a couple weeks before thanksgiving. i had a sick stomach the entire day and couldn’t eat. my father was trying so hard to be normal.
@Cerridwyn@werehatrack I had an uncle pass many years ago on Dec 23rd, while we were on the way to his house for a Christmas party. The next year my grandma passed on Dec 18th. It was a long time before I wanted to celebrate Christmas again.
Its just the two of us now, but both of us grew up in families where Thanksgiving dinners had 15 to 30 people attending; that was before the diaspora. Nobody lives in the same state any more. We loved the meals, and the cameraderie. Now we remember and call those who remain, and make the same dinners and sides that we grew up with. We even still make a turkey and sides large enough to feed a bunch of people; leftovers!
We also do a couple of Thanksgiving baskets for the local township (so needy families can have a Thanksgiving meal; all the fixings and a gift card for a turkey or other protein are provided in a basket).
Thanksgiving is also the start of the Holiday season for us. We ignore all the commercial Christmas stuff, Christmas music, etc until the day after Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving deserves its own time, and in our home its own decor and ambience.
@jouest There are probably a decent number of them but as they are mostly hymns or others based in religion, too many people shy away from them. And any more everyone just plays Christmas stuff starting November 1st so they don’t even have to think about it.
Don’t know if we’ll ever have a big family Thanksgiving again but if we move (on retirement) nearer to one group or the other I know we’ll get together again, share the pictures and videos and snapshots of those huge Thanksgivings in the late '60s through late '80s and remember all our family members, so many departed, and be thankful that we had them and that some still live and a new generation and a young second may join in.
Once we’re both free of work we may even do the traveling thing to do Thanksgiving with one or the other group.
I know I’m reading English here but WHY on earth does my brain feel like this is a foreign language?
@Lynnerizer sometimes it can be weird the way arranged the words are

Aww… That’s the best feeling ever. I love my snuggle bug, and it’s extra special when he holds/hugs my hands!
Meh
@Cerridwyn indeed

It’s about parades & football for me. Dinner…meh.
@Flipflops4evah what about snacks though

@werehatrack that’s a lot of trauma, and especially makes holidays difficult. Best wishes for your time with your daughter.

@duodec we need more thanksgiving songs

It doesn’t mean as much to me as it used to when my parents made a big, home-cooked feast and we had a family celebration. I miss that ️
@heartny be the family feast maker you want to see in the world!
@heartny @jouest This.
