Which is to say we’re spending the weekend at my sister’s with her husband, our teen nephew, and 'tween niece. I love them all to pieces and am overjoyed every time I get to hang out with them. That’s all I want.
I did indeed. Hello, Surface Book (replacing Surface Pro 3)! That said, not exactly what I wanted for Christmas, I just knew I was getting a new computer and it would be counting as my Christmas present. Though I did also get an Xbox One, which I hadn’t initially wanted (didn’t not want it, it just wasn’t on my list) but now use all the time.
Well, I have not two, but THREE front teeth. Kind of. If you take the bottom two as whole teeth, and the top two as partial teeth since I shattered the equivalent of one tooth between them a few years ago, so most of them is real, but part of them is fake, so basically one upper tooth.
So yeah, if all I want for Christmas is my two front teeth, I’ve come out ahead, there.
Really, though, I don’t care. I am pretty much over recent food poisoning, and don’t feel like I want to throw up constantly, so I’m pretty happy.
I thought my Asus Zenfone Zoom was my Xmas present, to myself, but it turns out my Xmas present to myself is going to be a new car, as well. I slid into a curb and bent the frame, on my Blazer.
@sohmageek I mostly got games (Firefly, Castles of Burgundy, Fluxx Board game). I bought more than a dozen games for the group in November (Trains, Ticket to Ride, Dampfoss, Carcasonne New World, Through the Ages, Istanbul, Castles of Mad King Ludwig, Marvel Legendary, Pathfinder, King of Tokyo, and a bunch more) so we have a whole lot to explore. But the next game we want to play is an old one, our annual Advanced Civilization New Year’s Day cookout. We may not be able to get it together this year, though. The core group is disintegrating into mundanity. Need to find me a fresh crop of geeks. Having a hundred + title games library is just sad when you’ve got no one to play with.
@sammydog01 I got a bunch of games last night on Steam and I’m still thinking about getting more. Pretty sure I’m going to get Intensive Exposure after I discovered it last night by looking at the games my brother had bought. Stardew Valley and Slime Rancher might end up in my library at some point too.
@sammydog01 Maybe BattleBlock Theater if that looks like something you’d like. Or maybe Magicka, Sanctum, or Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, or even Goat Simulator or one of the many Lego games on sale. I typed up a ton of other ideas that are all in the sale but accidentally switched to another page and lost it all. I might come back later tonight or tomorrow and try to list some more if you still want suggestions. What genres and types of games do you like?
The Yogscast bundle is also worth looking into- it costs more than anything else on this list, but if you like the titles, you do get great value.
On Steam:
Get Machinarium- it’s the earlier game made by the same people who did Botanicula, and it’s under $5.
Undertale is also super-cheap, and definitely worth getting- it’s a fascinating story, and the mechanics are amazing.
Pony Island- one of the finest from 2016, which is saying something since it came out in January. Also, it’s not spoiling a lot to say the name is a somewhat misleading.
The Room & the Room 2 are apparently on Windows now, so if you haven’t played them on a mobile device (iPad or Android tablet), definitely get them- very solid puzzle games with a story that ties it together.
Thomas Was Alone- a game about Tetris-style pieces that will make you care deeply for them by the end of the game.
VVVVVV- Platformer with old-school style graphics mixed with super-simple controls (left, right, and up/down to change gravity). This blends a nice art style, very simple controls, and gameplay that provides a satisfying challenge by iterating on the very simple gravity flipping mechanic.
Serena- this is a free single-room adventure game worth experiencing.
Gone Home- a short interactive fiction title that has you trying to figure out where your family is and what happened while you were gone.
Firewatch- Firewatch is a single-player first-person mystery set in the Wyoming wilderness.
@sammydog01 Hmm. I don’t play a lot of puzzle games. Maybe try To the Moon though. It’s more story than puzzle I think, and I haven’t played through it yet, but according to the reviews it’s really really good. And the little of it I did play seemed pretty simple. The same developer made another game called A Bird Story that’s also supposed to be pretty good.
@sammydog01 Oh and another game I almost forgot to mention, A Story About My Uncle is a platforming type game and also has really good reviews. I also haven’t played it yet.
@f00l @Al_Coholic @RiotDemon @sammydog01
Yes- it’s totally worth getting, but not knowing if you like RPGs (role-playing adventure games) and the Star Wars universe, I didn’t put it on the list.
@f00l@RiotDemon@sammydog01 Yeah, KOTOR and its sequel were actually mentioned in my first big post I wrote up but accidentally deleted before posting by switching to another page. The second one has some issues but I still liked it a lot. They both have “very positive” ratings on Steam.
@sammydog01 if your games are on Steam and you add me as a Steam friend I can compare your library to my piles of unused Humble Bundle codes, I’ve accumulated a quantity of duplicate titles over the years so I might have some good stuff I could offer you for free.
@sammydog01 I’m also interested in what you bought, and like @jbartus would also offer you items from my somewhat large Humble Bundle library & Steam gift items.
Well, my only present was a gift card to Amazon. I was looking at this adorable cat mermaid clock since the clock in my bathroom died, but I couldn’t justify the $64 price. I added it to my wishlist and I noticed that the 8GB of memory for my laptop had dropped in price by $40. Redeemed some Mypoints rewards and I ordered my RAM.
Now, I’ll be able to rule my little world as I multi-task.
I’m employed, my boys are here until I have to sleep for work, my honey won’t go take a nap without me, and he got me something practical and I love it. That’s how he is, and I appreciate the hell out of it. Things to make life easier.
He also loved his present, an 8ft canvas print of Marvel. The boys seem happy as hell with theirs. And all that is worth more than anything I could get
If there’s one thing I learned about this holiday from comics and such, despite the attempt to make people think otherwise, it’s not so much material goods which matter, but who you choose to be around, and who you spend the day with.
More like Dr Who (the reboot, not the original stuff).
I once started watching Christopher Eccleston’s season, though I stopped.
Last night I resumed. After him, I’ll watch David Tennant’s seasons, then I’ll decide about watching Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi again.
The thing to remember about the actor who plays the Doctor is that even though they have to follow certain rules, they each have a different personification of the role.
After Capaldi stepped into the role, I decided not to watch the holiday special. However, I watched his second series/season and enjoyed it. (Was going to call it series 9, but other places refer to the reboot as seasons.) Watched the holiday special.
Personally, I think I’ll stop after Moffat and Capaldi leave at the end of 2017. Not because the show isn’t good enough for me, but for other reasons.
Agree w that. Think Moffat (a brilliant guy) is better suited to have near total control of DW as a series than of Sherlock, which too noticeably often tosses depth and resonance aside in favor of shallow cleverness. He is amazing w dialogue and plot twists, I give him that.
But prev DW showrunners and writers have turned in fine stuff. No reason they can’t find a new set to deliver quality goods.
PS I have only seen of a few from each season of the revived series. Maybe someday. So perhaps my thoughts are mere uneducated idiocy.
@PlacidPenguin I have to find a way to watch his second season. It’s not that I disliked him, but there was not as much humor and other things that I found special, plus I didn’t like how the Clara character changed. I’ll give his second season a chance when I can find a way to watch it not on my laptop and without having to pay a whole bunch
@PlacidPenguin He’s amazing, but I won’t say more until you watch his whole tenure. I love David Tennant. I watched him in Broadchurch and Jessica Jones and he was just as good.
We are making fun of Hallmark Xmas movies about falling in love in picturesque perfect little towns with lots of snow and completely predictable plots (“Christmas Valley in Ohio”, the perfect place, OMG) while the second meal cooks at another, quieter house and we sip coffee and contemplate opening the Wellington 2012 Merlot.
@PlacidPenguin Actually what I did get for christmas is a bag of Russell Stover Candy, 4 balls of those Lindt chocolate balls filled with chocolate in a little cute paper box, 6 christmas cookies and $25. Oh and $25 via gofundme which will be sent off to MDA to help pay down my medical bills there (thank you meh person for doing that! - you know who you are).
@Kidsandliz
Your soul doesnt come with a debt chain. Debts relate to the material world and get to stay with your soulless self, but since you don’t have a soul those debts won’t bother you much.
Once your soul is shipped, I recommend you go over to the dark side of the force asap. No reason not to. All sorts of goodies over there, I hear.

If you’re all a bunch of broke cheapskate miser Scrooges, I’ll settle for universal peace, love, tolerance, health, intelligence, opportunity, prosperity, and spiritual growth. And some excellent rock and roll and a few additions to @carl669’s fun fact thread.
PS sorry haven’t been to the headbanger thread yet after asking for that info. Not possible for me to be listening to music earlier so I didn’t even try.
@Kidsandliz
WTF do you think I intended to do with the $1M portion of the dough that was earmarked with your name on it!!!
Another $1M was to be earmarked as a gift to our spiffy Pres-Elect for a closed circuit TV system so that he can watch himself on TV 24 hours a day with a special realistic and variable frequent applause and cheering routine and very sophisticated attack-the-journalists feature. Let me tell you, I am very serious about patriotism.

@PlacidPenguin They’re bulky, heavy, rather awkward things. This particular pair is on the higher end so the liners inside are nicely plush with a memory foam style cushioning. @KittySprinkles Going, we fly from Philly to San Fran, then to Vancouver. Coming home, from Vancouver to San Fran to Chicago to Philly (overnight). Going to be a long trip home…
Yes, I’ve received all what I wanted: parfume, luxury lingerie and game Pokemon Sun and Moon. Also I won 200$ in poker at casinoz.club. I was astonished 'coz I have never won before. This Christmas was unforgettable.
I wanted a Fuckubag, so no, I didn’t get what I wanted.
@Froggy A Fuck-U Bag?
I don’t know what I want for Christmas, so… Yarp?
I don’t want anything so yes.
I am hoping to get a 2007 Saab 9-3 Aero.
@TheCO2 Get the wagon
A gf. No.
I mean Christmas isn’t over yet, but I can kind of predict the future sometimes.
@Al_Coholic Got myself the next best thing, games on the Steam Winter Sale.
@Al_Coholic Those must be some interesting games.
@Al_Coholic
Since I bought myself what I needed, yes.
Nope. No magic cards
@sohmageek
@sohmageek
Well, your birthday is coming up, so you never know…
(I just dunno where to ship them.)
@moondrake

@moondrake
I like playing games…
@PlacidPenguin I would love to have you join our group. I doubt you are in my neighborhood, though.
@moondrake

My kids were happy so that’s what I really wanted. Oh, and I got a fancy new laptop too. Score!
So what was my son thrilled with? An LED color-changing light bulb bluetooth speaker and a Martian smart watch. I love that kid.
@sammydog01 So what laptop did you end up with?
@dashcloud HP Envy Core I7 with 1 tb not SSD. With a touch screen.
@sammydog01
Max out the ram asap if it isn’t ready maxed. You won’t be sorry.
@f00l It has 16 whatever’s. Now I need to find a use for it other than talking to you guys.
@sammydog01
How many reasons would you like?
@sammydog01 Steam Winter Sale!
store.steampowered.com
Or GOG
https://www.gog.com/
@Al_Coholic Ooh, I see possibilities!
@Al_Coholic I picked up the Portal bundle, the Half-life bundle, and something called Botanulica. Any other budget recommendations?
@sammydog01 Maybe BattleBlock Theater if that looks like something you’d like. Or maybe Magicka, Sanctum, or Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, or even Goat Simulator or one of the many Lego games on sale. I typed up a ton of other ideas that are all in the sale but accidentally switched to another page and lost it all. I might come back later tonight or tomorrow and try to list some more if you still want suggestions. What genres and types of games do you like?
@sammydog01
The simplest to get lots of good stuff is to buy a bundle:
Buy the Double Fine bundle on GOG.com: https://www.gog.com/promo/20161223_goodbuy_2016_sale_double_fine_productions_collection You can skip Brutal Legend from the pack.
Buy the Sierra bundle (name your own price, multiple tiers up to $20 for everything).
You’ll get all the games that made Sierra a household name in the 80’s and 90’s and a superb collection of adventure titles.
The Yogscast bundle is also worth looking into- it costs more than anything else on this list, but if you like the titles, you do get great value.
On Steam:
Get Machinarium- it’s the earlier game made by the same people who did Botanicula, and it’s under $5.

Gone Home- a short interactive fiction title that has you trying to figure out where your family is and what happened while you were gone.
Firewatch- Firewatch is a single-player first-person mystery set in the Wyoming wilderness.
@Al_Coholic I’ll check those out- thanks! I like puzzle games and I’m not sure what else but they need to be fairly easy.
@dashcloud Those sound good- I’ll buy a few. Thanks!
@sammydog01 I’ll second the vote for Machinarium. I’m thinking about buying it. I think I was halfway through before I lost my access to it.
@Al_Coholic
@dashcloud
@RiotDemon
@sammydog01
Isn’t Steam about to start one of its huge semi-annual sales? Or did I miss the timing?
@RiotDemon Got it. Thanks.
@f00l it’s ongoing.
@sammydog01 @dashcloud +1 for FIrewatch (several others too but…)
@sammydog01 Hmm. I don’t play a lot of puzzle games. Maybe try To the Moon though. It’s more story than puzzle I think, and I haven’t played through it yet, but according to the reviews it’s really really good. And the little of it I did play seemed pretty simple. @sammydog01
Isn’t KOTR (Knights Of The Old Republic) spozed to be a great game?
I own it on steam, but basically never game so it doesn’t do me much good.
@f00l
@Al_Coholic
@RiotDemon
@sammydog01
Yes- it’s totally worth getting, but not knowing if you like RPGs (role-playing adventure games) and the Star Wars universe, I didn’t put it on the list.
@dashcloud @Al_coholic @f00l @RiotDemon @jbartus Thanks for the recommendations! I have a bunch of new games that should last me for a while.
@f00l @RiotDemon @sammydog01 Yeah, KOTOR and its sequel were actually mentioned in my first big post I wrote up but accidentally deleted before posting by switching to another page. The second one has some issues but I still liked it a lot. They both have “very positive” ratings on Steam.
@sammydog01 Awesome, glad to help. What all did you end up getting?
@dashcloud
The Room 3 was interesting. I played all 3, and really enjoyed them. They were neat.
@sammydog01 I ended up downloading Machinarium again. I’m excited to play with that weird little robot again.
@RiotDemon
Wanted to play Machinarium, but after buying it I ran into a bit of a problem, and have failed to get in touch with the dev.
@PlacidPenguin problem? I had originally played on the PS3.
@sammydog01 if your games are on Steam and you add me as a Steam friend I can compare your library to my piles of unused Humble Bundle codes, I’ve accumulated a quantity of duplicate titles over the years so I might have some good stuff I could offer you for free.
@RiotDemon
Technical problem.
@sammydog01 I’m also interested in what you bought, and like @jbartus would also offer you items from my somewhat large Humble Bundle library & Steam gift items.
@jbartus @dashcloud @sammydog01 you probably need this if you want to take me up on my offer: http://steamcommunity.com/id/fallarnon
@jbartus I just sent you a friend request. I think. I still haven’t played anything but I keep buying games.
@sammydog01 I know the feeling, my library is massive.
@lisaviolet
Cat mermaid clock?
That either sounds cool or slightly creepy.
@PlacidPenguin It’s adorable! it would look great on my bathroom wall.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015GBEK94/
@lisaviolet
So… Creepy bathroom it is.
Nah… I kid. That clock doesn’t look nearly as bad as I imagined.
@lisaviolet I love that clock too.
@lisaviolet I got my clock! He said to order my clock!
Woohoo!
@lisaviolet Merry Christmas!
And all that is worth more than anything I could get
@KittySprinkles

“I won’t get what I really want…”
“No one ever does.”
I just got fed. Well fed. One of my extended family has become a professional high end chef and it shows.
Now I am watching a number of young people tear stuff open.
I am pretty content.
All I really wanted was Chinese food from my favorite place. Will be picking up my order in about an hour
@conandlibrarian
There’s a stereotype which involves me having to get Chinese food tonight. Dunno if I’ll uphold it.
@conandlibrarian
@PlacidPenguin
Chinese food and a movie or two?
@f00l @conandlibrarian @trillian @thumperchick
@f00l
So… Chinese food didn’t happen, but 4 hot dogs did.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@PlacidPenguin Sounds awesome. Did you do anything special with them?
@Al_Coholic
The hot dogs?
@PlacidPenguin I’m not thrilled with Capaldi but I love 9, 10& 11…10s my fav
@mehbee

@PlacidPenguin yeah of course.
@PlacidPenguin
What other reasons, if you’re willing to discuss?
@mehbee
10 & 11 have interesting combinations of humor and seriousness.
@PlacidPenguin
Agree w that. Think Moffat (a brilliant guy) is better suited to have near total control of DW as a series than of Sherlock, which too noticeably often tosses depth and resonance aside in favor of shallow cleverness. He is amazing w dialogue and plot twists, I give him that.

PS I have only seen of a few from each season of the revived series. Maybe someday. So perhaps my thoughts are mere uneducated idiocy.
@PlacidPenguin They do, with that not quite buried anger.
@mehbee
I’ll be honest, not too familiar with Tennant’s time as the Doctor, although I’m almost there.
I have to watch The Parting of the Ways, and then it’s Tennant from thereon out.
Seen some stuff with him of course though.
But yeah, having anger which is near the top but not quite there is good.
@mehbee
You’re talking about Capaldi I presume.
Tbh, I liked the 2nd season better than the 1st, although it’s often like that. Then again, right off the bat, 10 and 11 were funny.
@PlacidPenguin He’s amazing, but I won’t say more until you watch his whole tenure. I love David Tennant. I watched him in Broadchurch and Jessica Jones and he was just as good.
@PlacidPenguin Yes, sorry Capaldi
@mehbee
OK, watching 2005 holiday special tonight, so tomorrow I’ll be starting the regular series.
@PlacidPenguin Let me know what you think!
Sure I did. Just put a “fucking bow” on it.
Everyone I love is doing well. What more gift is there than that? I’m pretty happy.

@sammydog01 Tell him when Cleveland was losing a zillion sports for at least a zillion years they appreciated the support of their fans… so might the Chargers…
@Kidsandliz They didn’t have to go to middle school at Russell Wilson’s alma mater in Redskins territory.

If you participate in the next Meh exChange, and I get your name, I know just what to include in the box.
Well, sort of. But I had to buy them for myself. New ski boots!
@cinoclav
Serious question: what do they smell like?
@PlacidPenguin Mostly plastic. A little bit of the fabric scent wafts through. But I haven’t skied in them yet, so that’ll all change soon enough.
@cinoclav Yay! Sometimes we just have to do for ourselves.
@KittySprinkles Most of the time…
Btw, I’ll be using those up at Whistler at the end of February.
@PlacidPenguin Btw, why the olfactory curiosity?
@cinoclav
That’s a legitimate question.
@PlacidPenguin What would you think they smell like?
@cinoclav
Dunno. Never held ski boots to be able to understand them at a surface level physical level.
@PlacidPenguin They’re bulky, heavy, rather awkward things. This particular pair is on the higher end so the liners inside are nicely plush with a memory foam style cushioning. There’s a surprising amount of technology that goes into ski boots. This page describes all the elements.

@cinoclav Where are you flying into?
@KittySprinkles Going, we fly from Philly to San Fran, then to Vancouver. Coming home, from Vancouver to San Fran to Chicago to Philly (overnight). Going to be a long trip home…
@cinoclav
Sounds fun.

I’ve been saying for years that all I want for Christmas is peace on Earth, and a really cool subwoofer. I’m still waiting.
Yes, I’ve received all what I wanted: parfume, luxury lingerie and game Pokemon Sun and Moon. Also I won 200$ in poker at casinoz.club. I was astonished 'coz I have never won before. This Christmas was unforgettable.
An annulment of the 2016 election? World peace? Nope, didn’t get that.
