@uninflammable the dog or cat thing, yes… but they also learn your floor plan so in the future, not only can they deliver your stuff inside the front door, they can place it right where it goes. No hurting your back lifting it yourself.
Another Chinese import with another name on it. The “mop” function is more like a damp-mop to reduce dust.
I have a non-WiFi unit that looks about the same. It works, but mine has a remote, not an app.
Can’t find any reviews anywhere.
But it looks like Consumer Reports has something hidden behind their paywall… anyone have a subscription and want to give us a quick synopsis?
This quiet robot vac excelled at most of our tests from navigation to bare floor and carpet cleaning. In auto cleaning mode it used a random pattern to tackle our test surfaces. We found though, with our bare floors, that the vacuum did better using the straight suction option with the brush removed and an attachment in its place. The user will have to decide what is better for their home. For the carpet test we used the brush and it managed to pick the debris left on the floor up after at least a few passes. It struggled a bit picking up the pet hair. It barely got near the edges and hugged the walls without touching them and wasn’t able to navigate the bare floor-to-carpet transition well. It was, however, able to negotiate around the docking station without moving it. Its slim design was able to maneuver and clean under our furniture. The 2 side brushes were helpful in removing debris from our bare floor edges and corners but not quite as successful on our carpeted surfaces. For our rug tassel test, it maneuvered over the fringe, but didn’t get caught on it. It at first got caught up on our power cords but backed itself off of them. The dirt bin isn’t that big so you may find yourself emptying it often if you have a lot of debris on your floor. The brush roll has both bristles and a rubber flap to help pick up debris. It spent between an hour and an hour and a half on our test floors before it found its way back to its charging station. Its cliff sensors allowed it to avoid our stairs. Features: The app can change the suction power to max. Modes: Auto (random and grid), spot, edge, single room. Scheduling is easier with the app than with the included remote. Battery: Ni-MH (12 V, 3000 mAh, 36 Wh) Extras: Advanced wet/dry cleaning cloths (2), reservoir cleaning solution, measuring cup, replacement filter, 2 extra side brushes and direct suction component, remote, docking station. Warranty 1 year
“Three models were named a CR Best Buy: the Ecovacs Deebot M88, the Eufy RoboVac 11 and the iRobot Roomba 618.”
Geek Dad’s M88 review concluded: "any product that can get a 6 year old to clean every room in the house (“Can I use the robot” “first the floors have to be clear”) is priceless.

PSA: your local library may offer free access to Consumer Reports premium content. Check their website under the resources, or similar, section/tab.
@RedOak The San Francisco Public Library spends millions annually on database subscriptions that any resident of CA is welcome to access with their SFPL library card.
@RedOak NYPL has the same. Also, a subscription to a service called Kanopy that lets you stream up to 10 movies a month, including the Criterion Collection. Also, PressReader and Flipster, both of which have nice mobile apps, for full-fidelity newspaper and magazine experiences. Yay for libraries! (which I never set foot in except to renew my card, I have a membership to NYU libraries where I can use everything they have onsite, on my own laptop - useful for academic journals and stuff)
@RedOak Depending on your state your library may have access to these databases. In Michigan, for instance, the libraries all pool together into the state and the state gives them access to a variety of e-things. I regularly use Chilton’s auto repair manuals for free online, for instance, but there are free music services, interlibrary loans, e-books, audio books, and much more. So even if your library is a small fry, it’s worth asking.
@hchavers One of the best kid’s movies of all time. We have the VHS and DVD versions. Plan to indoctrinate the grand children soon…
Not sure that was your reference but that is where I went.
@Pufferfishy We do, the downside is that it can get caught/suck up rugs with loose edges or tassels, and particularly thick mats can confuse its drop sensor. For example, we have a thick cushioned comfort mat in front of the kitchen sink, and if we don’t pick it up the robot will drive up onto it and then get too scared to drive off.
@outz i don’t spill things all over the floor on a regular basis or anything, and we don’t have pets, or even wear shoes in the house most of the time. but the hardwoods get dusty pretty fast, and during the months where the windows are open everything gets coated with a thin film of pollen. due to the small size of our apartment it is also impossible to move something like our bed or the couch completely out of the way to thoroughly clean underneath it. (i make do with a telescoping duster but it’s not perfect or easy.) because of the small size, a large vacuum is kind of pointless as it’s not easy to maneuver around. small vacuums don’t do as good a job. additionally, finding an outlet in each room is almost impossible since we have so few to begin with.
we also have the supreme displeasure of having industrial carpet in both our kitchen and bathroom and it would be nice to have that vacuumed daily. (our downstairs neighbors have very young children and therefore i don’t like to run a vacuum late at night when i would have the time to do so.)
also, honestly, floors are just something i absolutely hate doing and will “forget” about for the better part of a year.
So, lesseee…I’ll install Alexa to listen to everything I do and send it…somewhere, plus track my online activity, and know when me and the wife are doing it by the rise in our heartrates via our Bluetooth fitbands. I’ll let folks from Amazon come on in whenever they want, and I just sent my saliva to be put in a DNA database.
Oh, now I can turn on electrical appliances remotely.
I’m no prepper or conspiracy theorist but is anyone else a little creeped out by all this?
I purchased enough Roombas to create an army of cleaning soldiers. Used the wall barriers and every accessory I could get my hands on.
Conclusion was, 10 min once a week with my Dyson over 2500 sq. ft. of carpet and 1200 sq. ft. of tile, produced superior result, less time micro managing the Roombas when they got stuck, battery issues, ineffective cleaning, etc.and less time managing.
For tile or wood floors, you really need to clean the grout or be careful of the amount of water used.
Alexa or any app does not improve the concept of set it and forget it.
Oh man… I’ll be real, buying this as a Christmas present for my mom is a deeply serious consideration. Do any of you guys know how well this works on corners?
@Toriii The Deebot models have two long, spinning brushes that are in front of the unit, kicking dirt and dust out of corners so the vacuum can pick it up.
I’ve gone through multiple Roombas always thinking the new and improved one will work better…They all fail! The robot vacuum can only venture out half way before the battery starts running low. Then it high tails it back to the charger station to refuel and once again heads out to the same areas it already cleaned. Then, about 50% of the time it gets stuck somewhere and starts sending out distress calls. When I come home it is in its last throws of life, sending out a beep every few seconds until I can find where it is stuck and return it to its charger. I’m totally done with robot floor cleaners.
I bought a Deebot N79 about two weeks ago for this same price (thx Murphy). The wifi on it is broken but it does have a remote that works. I don’t even have a dog, and I’m amazed at the amount of dust and hair it picks up.
If you’ve never had a robot vacuum before, this looks like a great place to jump in.
Bought. Wife will love this. Better than dropping $275 on a Roomba when trying out our first robot vacuum. Probably won’t sweep me off my feet. If so, I’ll just hack it and make it do what I want.
When will they build in a dog poop detector and then not drag poop all over a house? You would think that if an item or obstacle is over 3/4 of an inch tall, it would avoid going over it. Also, how does it not damage little cat toys? My cats tend to take their toys to all areas of my house.
@Rob_in_Suburbia If it can push an object it will, otherwise it will treat it as a wall (no height sensor required) and if you’d have to move something with a regular vacuum, you’d still have to move it before you start yours. Otherwise it’ll pick up whatever part of your toys it can.
So, this isn’t about today’'s Meh… I got my 20 Random bags today, They sure as hell weren’t like the representation. I guess Meh thinks I am going to be gifting shittons of their Wine, because I got 12 Freaking WINE BAGS AND 8 LITTLE BITTY BAGS. SERIOUSLY SO MEH… FFS. GJ!!!
When I placed my order I was expecting it to be delivered before Christmas–Im about to get really ticked because the delivery status keeps changing and now is listing possible Dec. 27th. If I had known that would not have ordered. This is so unacceptable!!!
Because a lot of packages are being shipped this time of year, especially because of the holidays in December/January, shipping time could be affected.
On the other hand, they made it clear that the estimated delivery time could be between the 25th and the 27th.
Mine came in early in the week. The robot is a lot dumber than I had expected. I got the wifi working, but it was tough to figure out why it wasn’t connecting in the first place. You have to take it off of the charger while setting it up with the app.

Throw one in my fuku please. The other vacuum I got didn’t work.
Fuck. I previously purchased BoB Jr. - no Alexa support.
Can someone explain to me what I stand to gain by having amazon data mining software in my roomba
@uninflammable it tracks you have a dog or cat and can sell you pet food.

@DVDBZN yay for library promotion! (says the librarian)
@DVDBZN you might be surprised by the otherwise pricy stuff e-stuff available via your local library.
Ours allows you to download three selections per week from a fairly rich collection of music. Not on loan - permenent.

@allergic2skank and ours is just a sleepy little surburban library.

Robotic vacuums stops working because of silly small mechanical issues.
Zero reviews virtually anywhere - this seems like a great idea!

I got the cheaper, stupider version last time and I am highly impressed. I wake up every morning to a clean house and it is thorough.
@Alereon Do you happen to have a mix of surfaces? (e.g. - tile/hardwood + area rugs)
Asking for a friend…
@Alereon what in the ef do yall do to your floors? my floors arent dirty, just mainly the dishes, laundry etc that need to be done.
where’s the bot these types of tasks? preferably one that doesn’t have an LV purse addiction.
@Pufferfishy We do, the downside is that it can get caught/suck up rugs with loose edges or tassels, and particularly thick mats can confuse its drop sensor. @Alereon Wow - thanks. And we have TWO of those thick mats in the kitchen. Not a deal killer, but good to know.

I was mildly disappointed to find that Ammo.com does not sell a Deathbot.

Am I the only one?
@Durago They sell Deathbot ammo.
@caffeine_dude Fair enough.
@Durago ammoman.com has far better prices. I used to buy all my ammo there until, that thing.

@Woody1 Sure - but now you can have Alexa tell you when your robot cleaner has done a shitty job.
@Woody1 Alexa ability is probably far less important than the ability to schedule it.
I’m still paranoid about the thing running over a fresh pile of dog crap and spreading it all over the house.
@wickhameh This has happened to a friend of mine… i’d just have to burn my house down… This is why I crate my dog when i’m at work.
Can you map areas to avoid?
Does this vacuum use a DeeBag?
Do these come with any virtual wall options to contain it to a room without having to physically block it?
@radar5 I don’t think so.

@cajun Hey, thank you so much! Sadly, I just had to pay for an unexpected car repair, so definitely on to getting a more economical present for Mom.
@Toriii
@therealjrn hahahaha love it!

I just checked the ecovacs app on the Android play store. It has about as many stars as i expected it would.
