Watching the news, they flashed the life expectancy for North and South Dakota. If I lived there I should be dead. I guess you don’t have to worry about finding a handicap parking space there.
@OldCatLady Go look at the original study (the second link the link you provided). You have an opportunity to download the supplement. In the supplement there are 3 maps showing this broken down by age group. Colors are figured by county. Although in the first article the map has the colors by county. The supplement tells which counties they combined in a few states.
63, something and 66 something, I forget which state had what. That the life expectancy was so low was shocking, I can see why those states are so anti social security and medicare, they never expect to use it.
@jbartus Funny how they said that in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000’s. If you wish hard enough I’m sure it will happen for you. Funny how when you turn 50 and are told to consult, how important social security and medicare becomes.
@cranky1950
30 years ago I knew a med-school grad who, as partial payment of his medical student loans, worked as an ER doc and general practitioner on S Dakota and N Dakota reservation health services (he commuted to offer services in various locations).
He said that the local health situations were appalling, and he spent his assigned years there working round the clock as much as possible, and also being profoundly depressed.
@PlacidPenguin OR they are the same size and the “smaller” glass is further away, the “bigger” glass is closer and they cropped the photo a bit… thus they are the same size and holding the same amount of water… OR they are the same size and the “bigger” one was taken with a telephoto lens.
Looks like I’m in the 78-79 zone. Of course, my family defies actuarials by getting themselves killed for the most part. The primary cause of death in my family is death by misadventure or complications therefrom.
Looks like i’m around 81-82. However I’m guessing that woman are a few years longer life expectancy than men, so that probably puts me dead around 79. Statistically.
Damn 3
Looks like Lying Donnie is remaking the Justice dept in the same image as the shysters he uses to screw vendors on his projects. Hope the congress gets its head out of its ass soon.
What numbers did they give?
@PlacidPenguin Take a deep breath before you look at the article. I’m still looking for a zoomable version of the map that gives it down to county level.

Oh, and we should all move to Colorado.

@Kidsandliz I just don’t like the answers, and I’m NOT moving to Colorado, or California.

@cranky1950 The second link in my post gives the interactive map. It takes awhile to load, and then a little longer to fiddle with. There’s a good article at https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/as-u-s-life-expectancies-climb-people-in-a-few-places-are-dying-younger/
@cranky1950 for some of us it won’t exist by the time we’re old enough to want it anyhow.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It was a crapy headline, it’s certain counties, That makes more sense, on the whole looks like the state average is about 80.

Hmmm. County looks to in the bright 75-78 zone. So I would seem to have another 5-8 years. Meh.
damn, our average means I haven’t even hit mid life yet…
@mikibell
@mikibell yep yer just a whippersnapper
@cranky1950 thank God there are good things still to look forward to… otherwise, that would be depressing @f001
@mikibell
/image “glass half empty”
/image “glass half full”
By which I do not intend to imply that all situations are equivalently good, or that we live in a “best of all possible worlds”.
; )
@f00l 97% of the time I am glass half full… lately, I feel like even that is empty
@f00l I dunno man, those images sure look equivalent!
@jbartus
I am usually four meta.
@jbartus
The picture of the half full glass is bigger which means that the glass is bigger.
If the glass is bigger, then it means it’s holding more water.
As a result of that, while the pictures may look similar, the second glass is bigger and has more water in it.
Although, one could attempt to argue that since proportionately the two glasses are holding equivalent amounts of water…
@PlacidPenguin OR they are the same size and the “smaller” glass is further away, the “bigger” glass is closer and they cropped the photo a bit… thus they are the same size and holding the same amount of water… OR they are the same size and the “bigger” one was taken with a telephoto lens.
@Kidsandliz
Logic has no place in this decade.
@PlacidPenguin it is all about perspective…
@mikibell perspective has no place in this decade either. It’s all about what usta recalled the best line of bullshit.
@cranky1950 and you and I are fluent in that

@moondrake missing the common sense gene?
@Kidsandliz No, in every case I think they knew the risks. It’s more a matter of daring than dumb.
Looks like i’m around 81-82. However I’m guessing that woman are a few years longer life expectancy than men, so that probably puts me dead around 79. Statistically.
