@uwacn Just checked D-Link for firmware updates. The latest version they have is dated December of 2013. Clearly they never bothered to develop the security patches on this model.
@ruouttaurmind That's OK, you can just sign your own since D-Link published the private key to sign their firmware in their GPL repo. So backport them and roll your own firmware. Or let some hacker in a cafe in Guangzhou or Grozny do it for you (with a large withdrawal from your accounts for 'services rendered').
@deputyderp That's why it's here. It's kinda pointless to have a fast wireless saddled with a slow wired connection. DLink's cheapassedness means today's meh offering.
@narfcake While I agree this is a cheap POS, very few people have internet connections faster than 100mb. If you only using this for wifi, who cares?
If you are using this wired, you should be using it only as a DHCP server and using a gb switching hub to connect all your devices to. Your performance and packet loss will improve dramatically.
@deputyderp I didn't think it was possible to not have a router with gigabit now. It is kinda standard now a days. It is even more surprising to see it be a new fangled 802.11 Draft AC router lacking gigabit.
This thing is gonna have a bottleneck for all wired stuff including a modem you would hook it up to. So any lan stuff and internet will be slow and reduced to I presume megabit. While WiFi to WiFi file transfers will be super awesome and fast.
This is gonna be a pass for most people. Unless you are hardup for cash and your router just pooped itself and need something to hold you over until you can afford a real router, this should be avoided.
@givemeyoursoul You assume that the only reason to use wifi is to access the Internet and not, for example, to communicate with other devices on the local network, some of which may be wired. That may be the case with you, but it's not for everyone.
@craigthom Now that I think about it, you are right, only because worked connections are over 100mb. Not that I ever see those speeds even on my $200 fancy router.
@Fish_Kungfu Nope. It's a D-Link. Quick and easy (well the set up anyway) like an ugly sister. Not good at what she does and you'll wonder what the hell you were thinking.
@KDemoTidbit for cheapos who turn off VMP when they don't want it for the moment: the "how comments display" settings are there if you have VMP. . . and thankfully those settings survive (but not the ability to change them) when you turn off VMP. So I turned on floodgate mode(not a pagination or pseudo-pagination fan) when I had VMP and it remains after I dumped VMP yesterday.
@RedOak - Good to know, thanks. Hope that's what you wanted. I'm liking firehose best, as well, but I also like having all the custom, convertible options.
@KDemo yep. Firehose it best for me. That's what that high speed spinner is for on the Logitech mouse. And fast screen swipes on mobile. Add agreed, the customize features are cool for those who want them. Kudos to @shawn and team for the implementation excellence. And for the smart VMP-only distinction.
I grabbed my Dad's old WRT54G when he was throwing it out telling myself i'd add DD-WRT and never got around to it.. this is even shittier than that old linksys.. I'm out. Better than the damn JBL speaker docks, but not much...
@gwrankin The WRT54G of decent version with DD-WRT has been bar none the most reliable wifi units we ever used anywhere with the exception of Meraki/Cisco enterprise-grade units. Its behind the times on speed, but its like having a diesel Mercedes G500 that you know will get you anywhere and last for decades, compared to this D-Link yugo with a small-block transplant but a crappy transmission that won't let it get power to the road, and won't be reliable because its a combo of chevy and yugo. Meh.
@Kerig3 I would put the brands as about the same level, maybe slight edge to D-Link. The TP-Link (i can never say that with a straight face) is N wireless where this is AC, so edge to today's Meh.
If you need a router and can only spend $20 or less, I'd give the D-Link a try. But I've always considered their equipment low end.
I'm almost tempted, just to throw dual band and ac in my house for stupid cheap, but I'm not going to throw out my old router if I do.
@Kerig3 I'd like to add that neither of these support a wired connection faster than 100 Mbps. If your broadband is faster than 100 (100 - 300 is common now in my area) then I'd recommend one with gigabit ethernet.
@Kerig3 I got this last time, and believe it or or not, it was an upgrade from my previous router. I have had no issues with it, honestly. The iPhone app for managing it is pretty sweet too.
@djslack The advantage I see in the TP-Link (teehee) is that I can use DD-WRT with it should I go that route. I already own one of these, but have had intermittent drop-outs and problems with an XBox One losing connection. 😠 I know that that may be becuase I haven't set it up properly for the XBox, I just have to find time to play with its settings.
@Kerig3 DD-WRT is a plus if you're looking for that. I used to do all that stuff but now if it just works I can't be bothered, I've got too many other things to tinker with.
I wouldn't put WD as a top tier router brand either, to me it's kind of something they jumped into trying to expand their brand but it's not one of their core competencies. Of course some people would argue that the hard drive isn't one of their core competencies, either, but I've always had decent luck with their products.
Instant Meh once I saw D-Link. Never expect them to perform well at all, let alone last very long. If I'm buying a router, even for $12, it's not going to be a D-Link.
@cjrhoades If it had Gigabit ethernet, it would be about $45 on Meh like all of the other cheap 802.11ac routers.
That said, Meh's userbase is pretty smart. Most of us know that it doesn't make much sense to have a router that's theoretically capable of wireless speeds up to 450Mb/s if it only has 100Mb/sec capable wired network and uplink ports.
@danoinct Yes, but faster theoretical speeds also mean faster real-world speeds. Even if they're only a fraction of the theoretical, the real-world speed of AC is faster than the real-world speed of N. So while you may be able to get 100mb using N when you're in the same room as the router, you probably won't be able to do it from several rooms away. So all else being equal, there is some justification for AC with a 100mb port.
I'm watching HD Youtube video streamed to my TV from my 1 x EnGenius ESR1221N2 IEEE 802.11 b/g/n Wireless N router that cost $15 in Dec 2012. Would this be better?
I notice the glowing, color-changing stars aren't included. Does this mean that I receive the doofus setup person at no additional charge? Do I at least get the tacky trucker hat?
There are places to skimp and places not to. Your router is one place not to. While this thing probably works, the lack of security updates, the poor wired connectivity and general crappyness means your internet experience will suck more than it should. I'll pass on this and save my money for a purple Bluetooth speaker.
If I were setting up a network for somebody I didn't like very much, I'd buy this and sell it to them for $20. In the meantime, I'll save my money and hope for more StickUps, any color.
@swatch If you had a cable modem that had no wireless capabilities builtin, this would work fine with that. If you need a cable modem or an all-in-one device, this is not what you are looking for.

This sale is a rout..
@AttyVette Alright, let's shut down this pun thread before all the D-Link-uents show up.
@MehAmphetamine - WiFight it?
@AttyVette It hurts when IP
Hey, it's twelve bucks. How bad could it be??
@ruouttaurmind Its a D-Link. How good could it be...
@duodec Twelve bucks of gooey, chocolaty goodness!
Seriously though, it can't be worse than my eight year old Actiontec PK5000.
@ruouttaurmind it can actually.
@ruouttaurmind Paying more than $12 for a router, especially with Meh's track record for selling generally well designed but wonky electronics, is probably worth it. Plus has this router got the latest patches? www.pcworld.com/article/2891872/dlink-patches-router-says-more-fixes-are-on-the-way.html
@uwacn Just checked D-Link for firmware updates. The latest version they have is dated December of 2013. Clearly they never bothered to develop the security patches on this model.

Functional-shy-genie. Oh crap, what HAVE I done?
How does an 802.11ac router not have 1Gbps ports??

Dual band-- wonder if we can pick which bands we want to listen too
@AttyVette Not to be confused with duel band, the term for a participant in Battle of the Bands.
@AttyVette prepare yourself for the rubber band
man
@AttyVette
While we're not on the subject … what was the point of Band on the Run?
@saodell Maybe they were Born to Run
@ceagee Like a Bat out of Hell.
@thismyusername Awesome sauce! How did you know what my favorite disco song was? If you're gonna go cheesy, go big or go home.
I was weirdly confused about the video/write up placement for far longer than I should have been.
"Quick and Easy!" Like your hot sister.
@Fish_Kungfu Nope. It's a D-Link. Quick and easy (well the set up anyway) like an ugly sister. Not good at what she does and you'll wonder what the hell you were thinking.
Excellent router, but unfortunately, no pagination. I'm out.
@phatmass - But there is pagination! Please thank @shawn. (You're going to have to come up with a new complaint).
@phatmass you missed pagination?
@phatmass - PS - Turn it on in your account settings.
@KDemo Tidbit for cheapos who turn off VMP when they don't want it for the moment: the "how comments display" settings are there if you have VMP. . . and thankfully those settings survive (but not the ability to change them) when you turn off VMP. @gwrankin how dare you besmirch the MINI... shaaaaaame... shame. :)
@thismyusername I was ok with seeing them the first 4 times they were listed.
Not on any tomato list I can see, anyone found any use for these?
@thismyusername Spare emergency router or something you can take with you when you travel?
@darkzrobe got plenty of spares that run tomato :( Oh well meh, I tried to want to buy it. ;)
@thismyusername Something to take a hammer to once the frustration gets to you.
@thismyusername Ya I was really trying to figure out why I would want to buy that.
I think they found the most meh wifi router on the planet. Bravo!
Anyone use one of these and can share your experience with it? Would this one be a better choice, and why?
@Kerig3 I would put the brands as about the same level, maybe slight edge to D-Link. The TP-Link (i can never say that with a straight face) is N wireless where this is AC, so edge to today's Meh.

@toddnet True, but all of my devices are wireless, being that the router is in another room and my home is not wired for ethernet.
@Kerig3 I got this last time, and believe it or or not, it was an upgrade from my previous router. I have had no issues with it, honestly. The iPhone app for managing it is pretty sweet too.

@marvelljones D-Link is one of the worst router brands ever. More like D-Stink.
Dear Meh, props for self-awareness!
- No DD-WRT because it's $12
- No Gigabit Ethernet because it's $12
- No immersive multisensory virtual reality generator because it's $12
@RedOak to be honest, a good router is something I NEVER skimp on. It's just not worth the High-Speed Hassles.
@matthew you don't trust the NSA? (Blue painter's tape over their viewport.)
@RedOak they are the least of your worries, be more worried about the random script kiddies with their stable of rats.
Or perhaps that is Meh's fancy tamper-proof no-web-cams on premises technology?
@RedOak Wait. So the Periscopes are CGI?
Please, meh, sell a cable modem next?
If only it had gigabit ethernet...
@cjrhoades If it had Gigabit ethernet, it would be about $45 on Meh like all of the other cheap 802.11ac routers.

What the hell. dependable-independent-instrument - maybe this is a good omen.
D-Link for D-Bags, Meh

@Kyser_Soze nope
Kinda like a doorstop without a modem, eh?
(a really tiny door)
Anyone know if this can be used as a bridge/repeater?
I notice the glowing, color-changing stars aren't included. Does this mean that I receive the doofus setup person at no additional charge? Do I at least get the tacky trucker hat?
