@Stallion in an area of "you get what you pay for" this falls into the "too cheap" category. also with more and more laser usage all this tells you is to pull over and produce license, registration and proof of insurance.
@tightwad But it does have laser detection too. I have a cheap one, not this one, and it's main flaw is that it's just contantly going off so you just end up ignoring it.
@Stallion Get an Escort, Valentino, or Bell. In that order. Spend at least $200 (actual value) and you will be ok. 1 speeding ticket prevented will pay for the device, after that it's basically profit.
@musicjoon no that's my opinion of best to less best, all are good though I know the least about bell. Get a passport 800 series and you're good to go. $200 sounds like a lot but if it saves you from a $150 ticket and points on your license, it's not so much anymore, is it? And another $100-$300 ticket and more points and insurance premiums? $200 is looking pretty affordable, no? I regret not getting one a while back. I cheated out on a cobra and it was constantly getting false alarms and imposed or bad reasons. If you're serious check out slick deals and get one on sale or refurbished, you'll thank yourself. Check out the resale value too, they hold value well. Blue led is more expensive than red but the detector is otherwise identical, it has to do with the chemicals needed for blue LEDs.
@stoopkid Laser is so fast and so narrow banded that you don't read scatter from other targets...if the laser detection goes off, you were just tagged.
@DonaldMcRonald Also prohibited in a lot of states for commercial vehicles, and in most of Canuckia. Will admit I thought they were outright illegal in more than just VA and DC though.
@tentalces1349 Important note for California: while radar detectors are legal, it is illegal to mount anything to your windshield - a GPS, a radar detector etc
@tehlaser I've heard that argument go both ways. Toll transponders are okay (because the state wants to collect money) but in high school I know someone who got a ticket for fuzzy dice from the rear view mirror. It's one of those things that is up to the cop if they want to write the ticket for it or not.
@tentalces1349http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/displaycode?section=veh&group=26001-27000&file=26700-26712 26708. (a) (1) A person shall not drive any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows. (2) A person shall not drive any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied in or upon the vehicle that obstructs or reduces the driver's clear view through the windshield or side windows.
@RedOak After market tint is illegal in CA on windows front of the B-pillar. They did however recently pass an amendment to allow GPS type devices on the windshield in the corners "You can mount it in a 5 inch area in the lower corner of the windshield on the driver side, or a 7 inch area in the lower corner of the passenger side, provided it does not get in the way of airbags and is only used for “door-to-door navigation” meaning it’s designed for automobiles."
@Collin1000 Not quite, CA carved out an exemption for the further corners or your windshield and the upper center area, behind the mirror basically. It's supposed to be for dash cams but a radar detector would probably work. From the DMV website: 13) (A) A video event recorder with the capability of monitoring driver performance to improve driver safety, which may be mounted in a seven-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield farthest removed from the driver, in a five-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield nearest to the driver and outside of an airbag deployment zone, or in a five-inch square mounted to the center uppermost portion of the interior of the windshield. As used in this section, "video event recorder" means a video recorder that continuously records in a digital loop, recording audio, video, and G-force levels, but saves video only when triggered by an unusual motion or crash or when operated by the driver to monitor driver performance. Link:https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/?1dmy&urile=wcm:path:/dmv_content_en/dmv/pubs/vctop/vc/d12/c4/26708
@Collin1000 WRONG! "(12) A portable Global Positioning System (GPS), which may be mounted in a seven-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield farthest removed from the driver or in a five-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield nearest to the driver and outside of an airbag deployment zone, if the system is used only for door-to-door navigation while the motor vehicle is being operated."
@Dengue Right, so, are your arms long enough to reach that 5 inch square in the lower left corner of your windshield? My arms sure can't. Don't think the cord will reach there either.
@Collin1000 I'm pretty sure they are. I have a smallish car. Back before my GPS broke though I generally kept it unattached and often sitting on the passenger seat. This is why it broke though since it got stepped on and the cable got bent. I don't like things that block visibility in general.
Guess I'm a freak. Valentine One user here. Although radar detectors are becoming harder to use every day without being annoyed. The new crop of Chevy SUVs and some new Audis spew K band like crazy, and Volvos, Infinitis, and Trailblazer third brake lights set off laser all the time. It's irritating until it actually spots a cop running radar, then all the other annoyance is worthwhile.
Note that this cheapy unit here may or may not detect an officer in time for you to slow down. Also note that the law likes to use techniques that minimize the effectiveness of tools like this such as instant on radar, or just hiding on an onramp and zapping you after you pass.
@djslack Freaks unite! I can't tell you I how many tickets my V1 has gotten me out of (although if I didn't have it I like to think I'd drive more reasonably). I wouldn't count on a cheap detector like this protecting me from anything. As for mounting it on the windshield (I live in CA) I won't get a ticket for it if the detector keeps me from getting pulled over.
@djslack I also have a V1 and wish I could just turn off K for the same reason. I think Ive only seen a cop use it once in the 4 years I've had it, the cops usually are on Ka instead. I like how each band has its own tone, K band has basically become white noise and Ka gets my attention.
@narfcake If you're just going to let it sit, trade with me. Mine's got to be going on 10 years old now, and it will sit in a drawer just as well as yours :)
I did see that newer versions have an app that can connect with/program them. Might be time to investigate upgrades.
@narfcake deal. Get ready to love it. The "tell you everything" nature of it with all the warnings can be offputting to some, but the first time you pick up a cop with over a mile warning you will see its beauty. Be sure to mount it high, at the top of the windshield if possible. Have a good trip!
I remember the days when you could slip a Ben Franklin under your license and be on your way . . . Ah, the good old days - when that was the (pretty much the full) extent of police corruption.
@DonaldMcRonald You're right, I just enjoy being on the right side of it . . . which is sometimes the wrong side, morally. But we all just strive to survive.
I'll buy one of 'em cobra detectors for the next trip, early cobra detection can save your life! Or I'll splurge for 3 to have 360° anti-cobra coverage.
@satih I TOTALLY love your idea, as I drive 700 miles + roundtrip for medical purposes, once a month. Don't worry.....I drive safe...LOL !! I bought two of them just now.
Conflicted on this one. It's been a good 15 years since I owned one of these. ..and it was a Cobra. Used it while traveling back and forth to school, 5 hour drive. Saved me on several occasions. Okay I'm in. ....
I used to have one of these and it saved me from tickets about 8-10 times for sure. These days that's like 1500-2500 bucks depending on how much (did you see Last Week Tonight an hour ago? Holy shit!) you area charges, plus fees, court costs, probation fees, private company fees, etc.
I loaned it to a friend and never saw it again. So I got this one to replace it.
For 18 bucks it's worth seeing if all the blind spot and cruise control radars on cars nowadays will keep it beeping continously or not. unexpected-mouthy-disease not sure what a mouthy disease is but probably don't want it unexpectedly.
I hate all the warning of legality comments. This is the most predictable comment. Hate it because it's only illigal in DC. comments like these make it seem like there is a 50/50 chance it might be illegal in your state, when in reality in all states they are legal for personal use.
@username Would you rather nobody brought it up and someone bought it without knowing that it could be illegal, opening themselves up to legal issues or confiscation of it? As I said in my earlier, I thought it was outright illegal in more places than it actually is, but it's still a valid point.
@Stallion That is what I have done more than once...Just keep the insurance and registration card out of the glove box !!!!! You'd be surprised @that one,LOL !!!!
@ryancunderwood i went to edit my post, but edit window was closed.. so 1 out of 50 states warrants endless "make sure it's legal" comments? especially within first 10 or so every time radar detector is sold
This would take a long time to pay for itself because I've never had a speeding ticket. And I drive 5-10 over the speed limit. And if it did pay for itself I wouldn't know.
It makes me wonder how many people think they're saving themselves from tickets they weren't going to get anyway and attribute it to their dose of prevention.
Not only on the highway on those long long trips, but in the BIG city where the posted speed is 50-55 and most everyone goes 70-80. Keep up with traffic and you are easy pickings for the State Police. We see this all the time here ...
I bought the last Cobra that went up here, and It's not as bad as the V1 Mafia would have you think. BUT...
The included mount (which looks to be the same as on this model) Is USELESS. I thought I was going to push my windshield out of frame pressing on the cups to try getting them to stick, no avail. No amount of cleaning, spitting, pressing or what have you worked.
I ended up using hook-and-loop to stick it to my garage door opener.
Good deal, but I can pass on this one. Got a good radar detector a few months ago when my 89-year old mother passed away. Got her car and what was inside. That would have been a box of tissues and a 'Valentine' radar detector. Yup, she could get that PT cruiser up to a good 38 MPH in a 25 MPH zone for all of the 500 feet it took her to drive to the grocery store - and same on the way back home. She did not get a single ticket after she bought it either, and lived long enough for the three on her driving record to drop off. She was proud of that too... damn proud.
@davidc3315 just buy something every few days. Repeat. Again and again. Once the stream of goodies starts you won't be thinking about how long it takes stuff to arrive.
I had Cobra when they first came out, and it worked just fine, I bought this for my Motorcycle now, since it is cheap and at least i'll know they are around the cops that is, also now I have the best Rocky Mountain Radar Laser Scrambler.. never had a ticket since and was speeding and absolute proof they work..mine is like 12 years old even and still works great..
@cinoclav Haha, figured someone would be weird enough to look it, up, that's one opinion, and they don't sell to him, that's why, they blast Mike all the time, I sat down and had a long talk with him over the phone.. it's a sales place article for petes sake.. MY RMR like i said works great, and never once a ticket, plus Escort don't guarantee a paid ticket if you get one, RMR does..
@mikenbrenda Yes, that's one opinion from a group that legitimately tests radar detectors. The reason they don't sell them is because they don't WANT to sell them because they are colossal pieces of shit. There are plenty of reviews and tests out there that show they don't work for scrambling radar or laser. As regular detectors they work, just not very well. You're likely better off with the cheap Cobra that was sold here. Honestly, if you spend that kind of money on a RMR product you're a complete sucker.
Really impressed by the fast shipping on this one Meh. Ordered on the 23rd, got it in the 31st, and I live well over a thousand miles away from TX. That was really helpful since I got it in time for my road trip.

I wonder how fast I was going when I meh'd this one
Meh, Illegal where I's want to use it, also I tend to worry more about gas mileage than speed now...
Does this suck? I don't know a darn thing about these anymore.
@Stallion in an area of "you get what you pay for" this falls into the "too cheap" category. also with more and more laser usage all this tells you is to pull over and produce license, registration and proof of insurance.
@Stallion It says Cobra on it so it's likely constructed of pure suck.

@tightwad That's why the Lidatek Laser Jammers help.
Make sure you check your state's laws to see whether radar detectors are legal or not! Definitely illegal in my state. Wheeeee!!
@kalira Illegal in like Virginia and maybe d.c. That's it.
@DonaldMcRonald Also prohibited in a lot of states for commercial vehicles, and in most of Canuckia. Will admit I thought they were outright illegal in more than just VA and DC though.
@kalira good point about the commercial use though I think most visitors here are looking for personal use. Good to know though.
@kalira CT as well.
@wilfbrim WRONG! They are legal in CT and have been from some time now. There was a time when they were illegal in CT, not that was a long time ago
I want one, but I don't want to pay for one. Send me one for free, I'll test it, and let you know how it goes.
@lichme well then today's your lucky day. Hard to call 18 bucks "paying for a radar detector."
@lichme don't do it. This is a really cheap unit and it will end up costing you to test it. Save up and buy a better unit, like a Valentine V1.
They still make these?
What's needed is a meh detector.....rates meh's on a scale of 1 to 5....the more me her, the higher the detector rating..
@eeterrific That is what a brain is for....YMMV....everybody has different needs

@Collin1000 so they've completely eliminated aftermarket tinting of driver and passenger side windows in California?
@RedOak After market tint is illegal in CA on windows front of the B-pillar. @Collin1000 WRONG! Two separate Sammy Hagar references in one write-up, that's got to be some kind of record.
@belowi I dunno, I think that sounds like a challenge @JasonToon
I bit since I'm Driving to FL in a bit. If it gets confiscated, it's only $18...

@djslack Am I a freak for still not trying out the V1 I bought a while back, other than I know it powers up and is only one version old?

@djslack Thanks for the tips! If I do find another, I hope they price it as low as I got mine for; it was less than what this one sold for. :)
How fast can a chicken pedal a bike anyway?
@djsteve Not fast enough!
I remember the days when you could slip a Ben Franklin under your license and be on your way . . . Ah, the good old days - when that was the (pretty much the full) extent of police corruption.
@Pavlov Lol, like major police corruption is a new thing. Corruption has existed since power existed. It's a sad fact.
@DonaldMcRonald You're right, I just enjoy being on the right side of it . . . which is sometimes the wrong side, morally. But we all just strive to survive.

$18 is worth pitting it against my Passport SmartRadar.
Its called waze and its free
@msujp Use this with Waze so you can inform on all the cops!
@msujp I use a Valentine radar detector in addition to Waze, the Valentine often provides warning of cops not reported on Waze.
@msujp WAZE depends on other road users. I wouldn't count on it. But it is a good ADDITIONAL tool to use.

I don't drive. Would this work if I use it on Metro?
I hate all the warning of legality comments. This is the most predictable comment. Hate it because it's only illigal in DC.
comments like these make it seem like there is a 50/50 chance it might be illegal in your state, when in reality in all states they are legal for personal use.

@Stallion That is what I have done more than once...Just keep the insurance and registration card out of the glove box !!!!! You'd be surprised @that one,LOL !!!!
@username It's illegal in 100% of the states that I live in.
@TerriblyHuang Airwolf FTW.
@ryancunderwood i went to edit my post, but edit window was closed.. so 1 out of 50 states warrants endless "make sure it's legal" comments? especially within first 10 or so every time radar detector is sold

Radar and Laser? What about a Razer detector? Lidar? I want it all, baby!
@PocketBrain http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lidar (that's something else)
OK
No Georgia Red. . . for that alone, meh.
@daveJay thanks Grandpa
They didn't say 'fuzz buster'. not once. I'm not sure how I can purchase this.

She was proud of that too... damn proud.
does anyone have a pic of this unit with LEDs on? which color are they? do they show the signal strength in any way?
Why is the newer version, SSR 80, $18 less than this version on Amazon? If I really needed one, for a few more bucks is it worth it?

@ACraigL Well, it's twice the price of this one for sale on Meh.

@davidc3315 Tomorrow!
@davidc3315 oh boy.... have I got news for you.
kinda surprised these are selling better than the tupperware
the diagram showing who is buying this is actually a diagram of the nations worst cops.
