You’d need some experience with batteries and electronics in general. For instance you have to figure out how to power it since it doesn’t come with a power supply. And you have to configure it correctly or the batteries will explode. But it charges precisely and can partially charge the battery for longer-term storage which is nice. It can also hook up to the computer and there’s wifi and bluetooth modules that work with it.

Already have five (really, 5.75) of these but with VMP this is cheaper than buying the spare parts from banggood or one of the other places that has them.

If 8am is the time, then make 8am the time. I’ll either adjust my schedule, or make my purchases elsewhere. But this carrot dangling from a string approach is nonsense. The whole circuit breaker concept was implemented to add some degree of “fairness” to the buying process. IMHO, it seems an odd choice (or at least puzzling to me) to cultivate a “visit at midnight, get a bargain” culture, then allocate a minuscule portion of available stock to service the group who have loyally supported that routine for two years, in favor of a group who wasn’t willing to put forth any effort, and sacrifice convenience, to get the same bargains.
@ruouttaurmind My gut feeling says they’re still evaluating this plan, like how much to hold back for whichever time, whether it’s really viable or causes more bickering, or to just go back to a single midnight offering.
@ruouttaurmind But that is exactly the point…it isn’t a “visit at midnight” deal for the west coast. Many of us Easties would LOVE a “visit at 9pm” site for a change. More often than not, the real deals are gone by the morning. And a chance at Fukubukuro? Well Fukubukurome, I’ll never see one.
Those of us Easties that spent years staying up for a original woot-off or just to see the deals have a hard time seeing it from your perspective.

@Yoda_Daenerys Many people HAVE put forth the effort. Regardless WHICH timezone they live in, thousands of folks visit at midnight. It was a choice they made. “Deals are at Midnight. Visit then, or risk missing out.” The product discussions at midnight are usually well represented by folks from all over the country.
The same would be true if “Deals are at 8AM. Visit then, or risk missing out.” As I wrote originally “If 8am is the time, then make 8am the time. I’ll either adjust my schedule, or make my purchases elsewhere.”
I think you misunderstood my first comment to imply ‘all people on the east coast are too lazy to visit at midnight’. Not my intention and not what I wrote. Sorry for the confusion.

I’ve spent many Black Fridays standing in line in front of Toys R Us so I could get that FurReal Butterscotch ride-on pony my little girl wanted so bad. Or the XBox 360 my boy was so anxious for. Or whatever other thing I couldn’t have afforded without that magical Black Friday price. In those days retailers didn’t offer “also available online” deals. So stand in line I did. Fortunately, I don’t live in the snow belt, but I have spent many a night in 40 degree driving rain. LOL!
So I get it. I totally understand where you’re coming from. It would have been great to get up at midnight, fire up the iPad, hit the Buy It Now button and go back to sleep knowing the kids were going to be squealing on Christmas morning. It’s an awesome luxury I can enjoy now. Skip the lines and shop from the comfort of my own bed. Of course the kids are gone now, but still, progress is progress!
Similarly, this circuit breaker dealio will be a welcome change for those who otherwise would have had to get up in the middle of the damn night to check the daily deal. Main difference being I only had to stand in the rain once a year, not 7 days a week.
@ruouttaurmind Trouble for me is I work at a secure facility. We’re locked out of any personal online stuff, email or commerce, and can’t carry our cellphones in. Plus a >1.5 million sq/ft facility is a looong trek out to make an online purchase. Screw it.

I figure they calculated 24 days for December, 30 each for Nov and Sep, 31 each for Aug and Oct, and “31 - 22” to get 9 remaining in July. Count them out: 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31. That’s ten. Pound that into your calculator (or Excel).
@awk I believe I read that they specify a number and when units sold hits that number, the breaker kicks in. The combo of low price point and breaker number, leads me to believe they engineered this to test the system.

Bought 9 of these in the past for the nephews and nieces. Finally gave them away last week for our annual Christmas in July get-together. They were a huge hit. The things are like little bees, buzzing everywhere. No issues with radio frequencies. Battery life better than expected. Kids had no problem flying them and making them flip, just needs a little flying adjustment that you make with the controller. The rotors do break, and you get spares, but you may want to buy a lot as backup. Best $10 gift ever.

Gonna say pausing is a great idea, because that seems like an unpopular opinion here. I’m a VIP too, but I get up at 5 am on the east coast to drive a route. No way I’m checking in at midnight when I’m fast asleep just to see what Meh has today. Least now I have some chance.

@Yoda_Daenerys I’ve (relatively recently) discovered that not sleeping late on the weekend allows me to get so much more stuff done. If I’m going to sleep late, it will be on a work day, when I can almost always sleep until almost 10 AM.
@baqui63 my daughter, who is much smarter than me advises to establish a ‘normal’ sleep pattern and stick to it, no adjusting for the weekends cuz it messes with your ‘sleep rhythm’, or something like that

@Yoda_Daenerys Yep. That is what’s best, at least for most people.
However, I’ve never been one to sleep normally. When I was in high school, it was normal for me to sleep 3-5 hours most nights and catch up on weekend. When I get involved in something, even just reading a book, sleep just doesn’t happen easily unless I’ve been awake for 20-25 hours. Short cat naps, coupled with long periods of wakefulness has always been my norm.
In my mid-30s and possibly even earlier, I probably started suffering from OSA until I was diagnosed in 2008 with severe OSA (stopping breathing 60-100 times per hour) and started using CPAP in early 2009. Due to the OSA, I got about the same rest whether I slept 2 hours or 14 hours (once deep sleep started, I’d be awakening every 30-40 seconds until I crawled out of bed); this served to reinforce my cat napping tendencies. (I can still remember my first night of sleep with the CPAP… the first time I could remember awakening after 8 hours and not feeling like shit).
The CPAP machine tells me I sleep an average of 7.14 hours per 24 and that average hasn’t changed much since 2009. However, when I don’t have to keep to a schedule and the sun hasn’t been an issue (blackout curtains or basement apartments) I’ve found that my body seems to like a 32 hour day with ~9.5 hours of sleep and ~22.5 hours of being awake. (Yes, I’m enough of a nerd to make note of such things.)
@Yoda_Daenerys Also (yes, I talk too much… I had a pretty great day so am in a good mood), I’ve found that getting up at the same time each day works the best in terms of feeling good.
Hmmm…my initial reaction is the circuit breaker idea is stupid, and that you’ll never get rid of the whiners. But, perhaps there is some merit here. I could have bought them last night, but said “why”. Then, this morning, I thought, “hey, these would be great for our grandson” and who wouldn’t want a $5 drone.
So, because of the whiners, my admittedly slow mind, and this stupid circuit breaker thing, our grandson will be getting some exercise chasing this thing around. Touche’ meh social engineers…even us crotchety old farts can make lemonade out of the lemons you’re serving up!

@RiotDemon Thr first breaker tripped about 26 minutes into the sale. If it continued a that pace they’d be at around 3,400 units in 3 hours…probably guaranteeing nothing left by morning.
@hutchnow I don’t have the exact timestamp of the breaker tripping but my post about it happening was at 12:09. I saw the item, came here to post about it, and went back to buy and the deal was already paused. It was 550-560 units.
I saw someone else say (and I agree) the combination of quantity and low price was probably done to test the circuit breaker system.
@RiotDemon You’re correct, it is by quantity…just that it’s not necessarily based on meh running low on stock. My reply was poorly worded and I did a terrible job of saying what I wanted to say…a problem I’m still struggling with as I write this. I think I need a nap.
@blaineg Normally you’d be correct but I assure you that you misunderstand. You see, hasneurotoxin been poisoned by taking a bite out of this man-shaped vial of neurotoxin.
Earlier, I found some positive in this circuit breaker nonsense. However, unless someone is “experimenting” with a bit of psychology, by manufacturing a sense of urgency to get something in short supply, that really isn’t, the circuit breaker is sorely in need of revision already. So, the hardcore, people who check every night at product change (you know the ones who MADE your success possible) were able to purchase 556 units, yet you had another 2,223 available after the 8am “pause”, or right at 4 times as many available for the whiners.
What gives here? Is Meh trying to drive people to check at 8 am eastern? If so, just change the intro time to 8 am. There, whiners will be happy, and your hard core followers will know the rules to the game.
If you’re trying to create “buzz”, you’re doing it at the expense of your hard core buyers. Not the best idea. If you want to change the initial release time, just do it. And if it’s just poor programming, it shouldn’t take too long to fix it. I think you have the proportions about 180 degrees out of sync, so it shouldn’t be too hard to swap the math around.
I’m sorry if this seems negative…it’s supposed to be constructive criticism, only because I truly enjoy Meh, and want to see it continue as a fun, quirky place.
@beachhead I agree in theory but maybe Meh sees that its hard core buyers as you describe them are significantly less on the East coast? Alienating either side is not a way to grow your business.
But as someone in this zone, I mostly just write off chances of anything here. It would be nice to have a shot at something.

@Yoda_Daenerys Even that would be tainted. years ago, I used to stay up for the original woot site but these days I only check meh if I happen to be up at Midnight. That is because the older I get I need a bit more sleep than I used to so I can be a functional contributing member of society from 6am - 11pm…certainly not because I don’t love a deal. So if you do it based on Meh sales, you won’t see me in the mix because the way I adjusted was to learn that if it is a good deal it will be gone by morning. So there is zero inspiration to hurry up and check it.
From their perspective…I am a faithful follower but under-utilized buyer.

@mydrivec i too am older than before, but i guess we all are. i got obsessed with my Meh. click streak, and somehow thought i had to do it at midnight ET (D’oh!) so my sleep pattern got kinda screwy. i’ve back off the Meh. clicks now, but i do wish my sleep pattern would return to normal.
i agree the proportion by geographical sales might be off, but the point i was making was how do we define loyalty - actually i guess that is a question, not a point.
i have 200+ orders so consider myself loyal, a.k.a. stupid, and i’m happy to have a chance at the good deals without staying up, although i still find myself up most nights anyway.

@beachhead each product has it’s own circuit breaker discussion on how best to meet demand. It’s turning out to be quite surprising the number of dynamics involved. One advance issue we’re even trying to think about is how our daily teaser email will influence 8am demand.
I used a very long blog post to evidence loyalty to the 12am crowd so I won’t do that again. Best I can summarize is to say we’re learning. Input on how horrible a balance appeared to be after the fact is just fine to give. This is a work in progress. Hopefully we can accelerate growth and take down some bigger deals but there will be growing pains. We refused to raise prices as a short term solution.
I will say that quantity is the right focus for complaint - one thing we’re absolutely not going to be good at incorporating is how much people change their behavior to act quicker. Counting minutes is meaningless if everyone changes their behavior at once.
@snapster speaking of the daily teaser email - is that happening already? i do not believe i am receiving them. or is that an ‘advance issue’ in the sense y’all are thinking about it now, but it is happening later?
@snapster If the quantity thing is true though that’s kinda crappy. At the very minimum the first circuit breaker should be 50% of stock. The only argument against it is to give the middle finger to bots and re-sellers. (Which I actually agree with and one of the reason I’m coming around to the idea of the fuses.)
@DrunkCat I agree in principle. Amounts may be hard to pin down but this morning’s release looked like a middle finger to those of us who were here but missed out last night only to have 4x more units come out in the morning. You think there will be even fewer units in the morning so check early and then there are thousands more available for hours.
(That sounded whiny, and mini quadcopters aren’t worth getting whiny about, but I’m leaving it unless i can think of a better way to say it before the edit window runs out.)

Even if you missed the brutally long @snapster post and resulting mehtizen dialog (it appears you did not), before the circuit breaker implementation, you likely would have been SOL by 1AM ET.
With circuit breaker/pause, there were 2 more opportunities to buy if you were VMP before midnight. I missed the midnight cycle but got 3 on the 8AM cycle. And it appears there were plenty more available at 4PM.

Got mine. Not sure if it’s defective, or I don’t understand the instructions yet. I’ve got some questions if you guys could help me out.
My two control sticks… The right one always goes back to center, the left one stays wherever I leave it. Is that normal?
When trying to take off, if I push the throttle halfway, the rotors spin, and then shut off without taking off. I have to push the throttle all the way for them to stay on.
Twice now when I’ve landed it back down… I throttle down to stop the rotors, but then one will randomly start back up at full speed, but won’t stop unless I turn the copter off, no matter what I do to the sticks. Any ideas?

-Left stick stays where you set it, that is normal.
-Red light to the rear.
-I’ve found on mine if the throttle is too low not all of the props will spin up. I always have to give it a little more than I think I should, but never have to full throttle to get it airborne.
@Ignorant hmm… I’ll try calibrating like suggested in the video above tomorrow… But yeah, if I go half throttle, the rotors just quit. I’ll see if calibrating helps. I’ll also check to see if it only does it when the battery is getting low, or even when it’s freshly charged.

@mdszy Nah, they’re decently sturdy. Blades might break, but you can buy 50 replacements for ~$6.
@mdszy I still have the first ones I bought, just needed to replace the battery and/or shell on a couple of them.
(Tip: use a dedicated LiPo charger that doesn’t slowly destroy the battery like the cheap charger these things come with.)

If 8am is the time, then make 8am the time. I’ll either adjust my schedule, or make my purchases elsewhere. But this carrot dangling from a string approach is nonsense. The whole circuit breaker concept was implemented to add some degree of “fairness” to the buying process. IMHO, it seems an odd choice (or at least puzzling to me) to cultivate a “visit at midnight, get a bargain” culture, then allocate a minuscule portion of available stock to service the group who have loyally supported that routine for two years, in favor of a group who wasn’t willing to put forth any effort, and sacrifice convenience, to get the same bargains.

Visit then, or risk missing out.” The product discussions at midnight are usually well represented by folks from all over the country.
The same would be true if “Deals are at 8AM. Visit then, or risk missing out.” As I wrote originally “If 8am is the time, then make 8am the time. I’ll either adjust my schedule, or make my purchases elsewhere.”

I’ve spent many Black Fridays standing in line in front of Toys R Us so I could get that FurReal Butterscotch ride-on pony my little girl wanted so bad. Or the XBox 360 my boy was so anxious for. Or whatever other thing I couldn’t have afforded without that magical Black Friday price. In those days retailers didn’t offer “also available online” deals. So stand in line I did. Fortunately, I don’t live in the snow belt, but I have spent many a night in 40 degree driving rain. LOL!
So I get it. I totally understand where you’re coming from. It would have been great to get up at midnight, fire up the iPad, hit the Buy It Now button and go back to sleep knowing the kids were going to be squealing on Christmas morning. It’s an awesome luxury I can enjoy now. Skip the lines and shop from the comfort of my own bed. Of course the kids are gone now, but still, progress is progress!
Similarly, this circuit breaker dealio will be a welcome change for those who otherwise would have had to get up in the middle of the damn night to check the daily deal. Main difference being I only had to stand in the rain once a year, not 7 days a week.

Bought 9 of these in the past for the nephews and nieces. Finally gave them away last week for our annual Christmas in July get-together. They were a huge hit. The things are like little bees, buzzing everywhere. No issues with radio frequencies. Battery life better than expected. Kids had no problem flying them and making them flip, just needs a little flying adjustment that you make with the controller. The rotors do break, and you get spares, but you may want to buy a lot as backup. Best $10 gift ever.

@Yoda_Daenerys I’ve (relatively recently) discovered that not sleeping late on the weekend allows me to get so much more stuff done. If I’m going to sleep late, it will be on a work day, when I can almost always sleep until almost 10 AM.
@baqui63 my daughter, who is much smarter than me advises to establish a ‘normal’ sleep pattern and stick to it, no adjusting for the weekends cuz it messes with your ‘sleep rhythm’, or something like that
@Yoda_Daenerys Yep. That is what’s best, at least for most people.
However, I’ve never been one to sleep normally. When I was in high school, it was normal for me to sleep 3-5 hours most nights and catch up on weekend. When I get involved in something, even just reading a book, sleep just doesn’t happen easily unless I’ve been awake for 20-25 hours. Short cat naps, coupled with long periods of wakefulness has always been my norm.
In my mid-30s and possibly even earlier, I probably started suffering from OSA until I was diagnosed in 2008 with severe OSA (stopping breathing 60-100 times per hour) and started using CPAP in early 2009. Due to the OSA, I got about the same rest whether I slept 2 hours or 14 hours (once deep sleep started, I’d be awakening every 30-40 seconds until I crawled out of bed); this served to reinforce my cat napping tendencies. (I can still remember my first night of sleep with the CPAP… the first time I could remember awakening after 8 hours and not feeling like shit).
The CPAP machine tells me I sleep an average of 7.14 hours per 24 and that average hasn’t changed much since 2009. However, when I don’t have to keep to a schedule and the sun hasn’t been an issue (blackout curtains or basement apartments) I’ve found that my body seems to like a 32 hour day with ~9.5 hours of sleep and ~22.5 hours of being awake. (Yes, I’m enough of a nerd to make note of such things.)
@Yoda_Daenerys Also (yes, I talk too much… I had a pretty great day so am in a good mood), I’ve found that getting up at the same time each day works the best in terms of feeling good.

Hmmm…my initial reaction is the circuit breaker idea is stupid, and that you’ll never get rid of the whiners. But, perhaps there is some merit here. I could have bought them last night, but said “why”. Then, this morning, I thought, “hey, these would be great for our grandson” and who wouldn’t want a $5 drone.

Earlier, I found some positive in this circuit breaker nonsense. However, unless someone is “experimenting” with a bit of psychology, by manufacturing a sense of urgency to get something in short supply, that really isn’t, the circuit breaker is sorely in need of revision already. So, the hardcore, people who check every night at product change (you know the ones who MADE your success possible) were able to purchase 556 units, yet you had another 2,223 available after the 8am “pause”, or right at 4 times as many available for the whiners.
What gives here? Is Meh trying to drive people to check at 8 am eastern? If so, just change the intro time to 8 am. There, whiners will be happy, and your hard core followers will know the rules to the game.
If you’re trying to create “buzz”, you’re doing it at the expense of your hard core buyers. Not the best idea. If you want to change the initial release time, just do it. And if it’s just poor programming, it shouldn’t take too long to fix it. I think you have the proportions about 180 degrees out of sync, so it shouldn’t be too hard to swap the math around.
I’m sorry if this seems negative…it’s supposed to be constructive criticism, only because I truly enjoy Meh, and want to see it continue as a fun, quirky place.

That is because the older I get I need a bit more sleep than I used to so I can be a functional contributing member of society from 6am - 11pm…certainly not because I don’t love a deal. So if you do it based on Meh sales, you won’t see me in the mix because the way I adjusted was to learn that if it is a good deal it will be gone by morning. So there is zero inspiration to hurry up and check it.

@beachhead each product has it’s own circuit breaker discussion on how best to meet demand. It’s turning out to be quite surprising the number of dynamics involved. One advance issue we’re even trying to think about is how our daily teaser email will influence 8am demand.
I used a very long blog post to evidence loyalty to the 12am crowd so I won’t do that again. Best I can summarize is to say we’re learning. Input on how horrible a balance appeared to be after the fact is just fine to give. This is a work in progress. Hopefully we can accelerate growth and take down some bigger deals but there will be growing pains. We refused to raise prices as a short term solution.
I will say that quantity is the right focus for complaint - one thing we’re absolutely not going to be good at incorporating is how much people change their behavior to act quicker. Counting minutes is meaningless if everyone changes their behavior at once.
@snapster speaking of the daily teaser email - is that happening already? i do not believe i am receiving them. or is that an ‘advance issue’ in the sense y’all are thinking about it now, but it is happening later?

@snapster If the quantity thing is true though that’s kinda crappy. At the very minimum the first circuit breaker should be 50% of stock. The only argument against it is to give the middle finger to bots and re-sellers. (Which I actually agree with and one of the reason I’m coming around to the idea of the fuses.)
@DrunkCat I agree in principle. Amounts may be hard to pin down but this morning’s release looked like a middle finger to those of us who were here but missed out last night only to have 4x more units come out in the morning. You think there will be even fewer units in the morning so check early and then there are thousands more available for hours.
(That sounded whiny, and mini quadcopters aren’t worth getting whiny about, but I’m leaving it unless i can think of a better way to say it before the edit window runs out.)
Eventually we’ll figure out the best time to actually be here, but i feel a bond with the late night changeover all the way back to original woot. That may not be best for business but it feels right to me.
@djslack Here’s the thing: the quantity will follow the greater number of visitors over time. I love the 12am crowd but it hasn’t grown like we need it to.
Will 8am grow faster? Will we be able to buy more great deals and be more generous to all? I hope both are true.
There is no intent to demote 12am, only test 8am and then grow both.
@snapster Fair enough. I get that it’s experimental, and that you can only achieve optimum results through testing. And I’m all for massive growth for Meh (at least approximately 359 days a year). Sometimes it’s hard to believe you make money doing this, and that you are a company and not just this place that some of us come for fun and random deals.
As a test subject, I will try to share what I think without whining too much. Thanks for the reply.

Even if you missed the brutally long @snapster post and resulting mehtizen dialog (it appears you did not), before the circuit breaker implementation, you likely would have been SOL by 1AM ET.
With circuit breaker/pause, there were 2 more opportunities to buy if you were VMP before midnight. I missed the midnight cycle but got 3 on the 8AM cycle. And it appears there were plenty more available at 4PM.

Got mine. Not sure if it’s defective, or I don’t understand the instructions yet. I’ve got some questions if you guys could help me out.
My two control sticks… The right one always goes back to center, the left one stays wherever I leave it. Is that normal?
When trying to take off, if I push the throttle halfway, the rotors spin, and then shut off without taking off. I have to push the throttle all the way for them to stay on.
Twice now when I’ve landed it back down… I throttle down to stop the rotors, but then one will randomly start back up at full speed, but won’t stop unless I turn the copter off, no matter what I do to the sticks. Any ideas?

@RiotDemon The throttle stick stays where you put it, but the directional stick does center itself. This is correct.
I believe blue is front and red is back but going off of memory. The charge plug is in the back.
As for your throttle issues, try calibrating the quad:
Around half throttle should get it to hover, more throttle to climb and less to descend.

-Left stick stays where you set it, that is normal.
-Red light to the rear.
-I’ve found on mine if the throttle is too low not all of the props will spin up. I always have to give it a little more than I think I should, but never have to full throttle to get it airborne.
@Ignorant hmm… I’ll try calibrating like suggested in the video above tomorrow… But yeah, if I go half throttle, the rotors just quit. I’ll see if calibrating helps. I’ll also check to see if it only does it when the battery is getting low, or even when it’s freshly charged.
