@dynamiklol Someone should come up with a card with credit so people who get paid next week can still purchase items. They could call it "card of credit". or something.
I love Canon SLR's, and highly recommend them. That said, this is the entry level model. For those considering this that are new to Canon or SLR's, check out the T5i specs before buying a T5.
@mehdaf Sorry, but while I'd like the Cyberdyne Systems Terminator 5i, the extra $200 makes it remain an undeveloped image. Hello, I'm not buying this even lower-priced deal because it's still too much of these $$ for something that still needs my help to take pictures.
@PhysAssist yea, if you want something that takes it's own pictures of you, this may not be the droid you are looking for.
Based on my previous experiences, I would think anyone considering an SLR would want to buy a model at least one step up from this one, but that really depends on how constrained your budget is. The good thing about this camera is that if you want to upgrade later, the lenses should still fit, but I'm not looking that up to confirm it so caveat emptor...
I bought this last time or so it was posted. I love it and works great. There was an issue where a few oil spots appeared on the sensor, but Canon honored the year after purchase warranty and they cleaned it for free.
@lichme I agree. Last time this camera was for sale here I got it as a present for my wife -- her first SLR. We've taken it on a few vacations and the pictures have always turned out great.
I'm a camera slut, but just got a new Nikon last month, otherwise I'd be picturing myself with this one. Uh, with a front zoom or something slightly suggestive and almost funny.
I'm a Nikon guy, so I'll pass. But I will say this is quite the good deal, so good job Meh! [Now if you'd ever like to dig up some deals on Nikon lenses, especially a major zoom [HINTHINT], I'm willing to bet the number of buyers would surprise you!]
@Fen_Star, as impressive as Point-n-Shoots can be, even when hacked, there is a ton to be said about the quality of the glass. Can't hack your way into better lenses. :-)
After our previous camera went missing, and well, things being beautiful on the West Coast... pious-mammoth-shelf... And if you somehow manage to expedite it before the we go to the Skagit valley tulip festival this weekend I'd be happy to post photos :D
Nope sry, I have a NIkon that I am still learning how to use, Shoot, lots of phones take better pictures than some Cameras.. Sellers are not happy, they are selling less watches and cameras since Smartphones...
@Mandamm: "lots of phones take better pictures than some Cameras"
Better, perhaps, than a crappy or even a medium camera. This is neither.
Phone cameras have gotten QUITE good in the past 6-7 years. But they aren't close to this level of good yet. And they still can't beat the quality of the lenses.
I'm in. My wife had an 8MP digital rebel and we have the most amazing family photos over the years. If this is half the quality of our older one (and by the looks of it, it's twice the camera that we own) this is a great deal. Also, we purchased a few really decent lenses for the previous camera which will totally fit. I defy anyone to put one of these cameras against a small point and shoot or a camera phone. It's not "pro", but it's everything a budding family needs to capture some amazing pictures.
@mothmer this is a nice camera at a nice price. But I suspect you'll find the person taking the photos is the magic that makes great shots. It is both a skill and an art. And it sounds like your wife has it mastered. Kudos. A too rare thing.
I have a different Canon camera and am very happy with it. I also have a couple of Canon film SLRs I don't use any more, but I still use a couple of lenses I bought over fifteen years ago.
An SLR gives you a lot of control in addition to interchangeable lenses.
I don't think one will magically make the pictures you take better. In my opinion the best thing you can do to improve your photography is read about photographic technique. Learn about lighting and composition.
This camera can help you take better pictures, but it can't do it alone.
@RifterNova Thanks for the heads up on this. $299 available now for the T5 with the 18-55mm kit lens and a 75-300 USM lens too, all refurbished. I was so close to the meh tonight, but I think I'm going for that deal from Canon instead.
@haydesigner Agreed. However, I am not. I would have been all over this if not for my D90 and my daughter's 3300 bundle last Christmas. Alas, it isn't feasible even to pick this up as a spare now. But the difference, even for my business on FB and IG, is night and day over my phone cameras to a P&S, let alone a DSLR.
I bought this as my first DSLR when it was on Meh about a year ago. Critic reviews say it's a mediocre budget camera. Whatever, I think it's awesome.
It takes good photos in auto mode, but if you use a cheap tripod and learn how to manually adjust things like aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, then you can do some cool stuff. You don't need a $2,000 camera to take nice photos.
Here's some stuff I've taken with it (disclaimer: these may have been taken with a 50mm lens that I bought separately, and not the kit lens. Too lazy to check. But it's an ~$80 lens if you want it, the aperture can open up extra wide for a nice shallow depth of field)
I bought this same camera from the Canon store just before Christmas. A factory refurb with full Canon warranty for $199 (no tax, free shipping). Currently Canon is offering the same factory refurb I got for $249 (same model Meh is selling, but this one at Meh.com is brand new, not refurb)
The condition of my refub was "as new". No signs of prior use whatsoever. If brand new is important to you, this meh.com deal is right up your alley. If $50 for "as new" is more important to you, head over to Canon.
Canon is also offering this camera, bundled with a 75-300 lens for $279.
They have frequent sales on their refurbished EOS cameras, and it's not unusual to see the T5 with two lens bundle for $229.
@martycaw Absolutely the one thing I very much dislike on mine. I got it partially to do video with the advantage of a changeable lens. No AF in video mode!
For a few bucks more, the SL1 has similar specs, but does support AF in video.
@Techrocket9 Sony HX9V. The model is trailing edge for this specific product line, so it should be very affordable by this point. 1080/60fps. Might be worth looking into.
@Techrocket9 the Panasonic GH5 (successor to the popular GH4) will probably debut in September, and it will likely shoot 4k video (along with a host of 4k goodies, like 4k photo-shooting, post-focus tech, etc. ). It is Panasonic's flagship video-oriented system camera, with some great lens choices and smaller form factor than a typical DSLR. Also shoots great images, better than this Canon T5 with the right lens.
@bjfaber prices go down...GH4 will be cheap after GH5 is introduced, and the 4 has better video capabilities than this Canon T5. Moreover, if he can wait until September, he can save enough $, deliver pizzas, whatever, and save enough to buy the latest tech.
@mrdancer as evidenced by the recently released a6300 which didn't reduce the price of the a6000 at all, just came out a higher price, I would be very surprised to see a GH4 go down to $300 from $1500 and I assume he understands the underlying nature of money and employment enough to know that he could save up money to buy something better. He expressly said that he was interested in something to record 1080/60p cheap and you gave him something 5x his budget that records 4k, I was just pointing out that your comment was maybe a little misguided.
@theredia I'm confused by that too. I, personally, wouldn't get to hung up on it. Kit lenses are not high quality lenses anyhow. I would get the best deal on the camera body and use the extra cash for quality lenses. I keep my kit lenses in my bag as back up lenses.
I'm curious as to whether the warranty is backed by Canon USA. A buddy of mine told me stories from his retail days where people got a nice deal on a camera, only to find the camera was purchased "grey market" and the warranty was for Canon's Singapore arm. So Canon was sending consumers to contact the Singapore division for service. Which is illegal in Singapore, I guess. Sooo...USA, yeah?
@thismyusername Thank you! I did notice the backup Meh warranty, but I wanted to make sure I had plenty of options through Canon first before I had to resort to that. Of course it's all speculation at this point.
Also, thanks for digging up that old support thread to help answer my question. Mighty kind of you!
I guess I should start learning to shooting in RAW now.
In another camera I have a SanDisk Extreme. Is that the recommended card I should go with for this Rebel? Just go ahead and get a 128GB card? Best price?
@fjp999Memory Card Size thoughts: (1) SD cards are cheap so going large isn't hard. (2) Decide first whether you'll shoot video since it eats card memory for breakfast. (3) Consider shooting photos in JPEG+RAW since raw since RAW gives you more fix/creative options later but note that RAW not only takes a lot of card memory but also storage space on your PC/online. (Consider deleting the RAW files once you're happy with your JPEG's to save space.) (4) if you shoot mostly photos, even JPEG+RAW, consider getting several 32GB cards vs. a few 128GB cards. Parses out your precious photos and makes it more difficult to get lazy delaying downloading those images. (5) if you shoot video, 64GB might be large enough and several of them vs. a few 128GB might do the job. Similar logic to (4). (6) Get them in as fast speed as you can. Slow cards slow down saving in JPEG+RAW very noticeably. And slow cards in video means the camera can drop out of video recording while the buffer catches up with the card. If the card doesn't show its speed, stay away. More future proof. At least 30-40 Mbit speeds. Amazon reviews are your friend and popular cards have review critical mass. They go on deal of the day regularly.
I bought a T5 a couple of months ago. It's pretty solid, and this looks like a good price. The base lens is good, but I'd recommend getting a bigger one. I've got the 75-300mm and they're a good combo for most situations.
@godholio i have the t2i with the 18-55 and 75-300 lenses and the biggest issue i run into is that i'm constantly in places where the short lens is too far away and the long lens is too close. So if you can find a good price on the 18-135 I think that's going to be a great add as well.
Nikon is better. I just wish they'd make an adapter for Canon lenses. Canon lenses are better. But I had a heck of a time getting the 35mm film in mine.
@Not_Ken_M You could just move to Sony. Get the same quality Sony built sensor that is in the Nikon plus you can get the Zeiss glass. Win/Win...well except for your bank account.
For those folks considering refurb/used DSLR cameras...
(1) The "Digital" in DSLR does not indicate a DSLR camera is no longer mechanical. The "SLR" part remains good 'ol mechanical.
(2) In the case of consumer targeted cameras, that means you can have no way of knowing how the original owner treated/abused/dropped the camera. A solid warranty helps, but does nothing when the camera fails during your precious kid's performance.
(3) In the case of pro-cameras, you won't know up front not only how the camera was treated (pray it wasn't a reporter's camera) but whether the mechanicals are worn out due to the number of images shot.
This camera hit the market about two years ago. It is capable of taking very good photos, but it is also a somewhat dated camera, and pretty low on tech by modern standards. Still, not a bad entry-level camera for the price.
For some perspective, this camera will take much better photos than a compact P&S camera. If you know how to use it well, or figure out how to use it well, you can take professional-level photos. It has an APS-C sensor, meaning it is not the largest sensor you can get, but better than most. A larger sensor gathers more light, so generally has better (less noisy) images than smaller sensors. I say generally because some cameras with smaller sensors but better technology will outperform this camera (example: Panasonic GX7 or GH4).
This is a system camera, meaning that it can accept a variety of Canon lenses, as well as some aftermarket lenses. If you shoot with this often, you will undoubtedly start buying more lenses. Soon you will have a library of lenses, so that when you upgrade your xamera, you will want to stick with a Canon camera so that you can continue using your old lenses. Nikon is the same way, as is Pentax and others. So you are really investing in the lens system as camera bodies will come and go.
So, which system to invest in? That depends on your gut feelings and trust/perceptions as much as anything g. Canon traditionally has the best lenses, while Nikon has the best dynamic range. Or you have a relative newcomer like Sony, whose camera technology currently exceeds both Nikon and Canon by a wide margin, is significantly cheaper, but has worse ergonomics and poorer menu system, as well as a somewhat limited lens range. On the other hand, Sony's flagship camera, the A7Rii, will accept Canon lenses and auto focus with them just as fast as a Canon camera will. Then thete is mirror vs mirrorless argument, etc., however, most of this is professional stuff and won't matter to you, until 20 years from now and you're fully vested in a system. Nikon and Canon have long track records, so they are a safe bet, but they are also slow to develop their technology.
If you are interested in shooting sports or low-light action, you may need a Canon 1Dx II or a Nikon D5 - those are professional are cameras. If you're a birder, and want to catch birds in flight at a distance, the hot camera now is a Nikon D500.
Me? I've invested in m43 cameras, particularly Panasonic. They've got some pretty cool technology that I am interested in, and camera sizes that I like.
It will all come down to what you like to shoot. There are different tools for different jobs, and some are much better than others, depending on the job you need to do.
Does no one on here own a credit card? Why is everyone stating I can buy this Friday (Pay Day)? Slap that shit on a credit card and pay it off when you get paid.
@mauisean Previously I only had a debt card. Not sure how my wonderful Banker got me a great MasterCard but now that I have that I use it and pay it off in full every month.
One of the best bonus that it comes with is an extra year of warranty. It says that does not include refurbs (wonder about Apple refurbs or Canon refurbs, etc).
Be careful, kids. A cheap starter DSLR is the gateway to many expensive lenses, accessories, image processing software, and eventually expensive DSLRs.
It happened to me, and I blame the old, better Woot.
Just got a SHIPPED notification so hit the link thinking I could relax before ordering a larger SD card but NOOOOO!
"Estimated Delivery: 4/8 - 4/11" goes out the window!
It seems meh goes all Amazon Prime on me with Fed-Ex Home and this little gem is getting here on Saturday April 2. Like WTF?
I had to actually order from Jet! I did follow everyones advice especially @RedOak - reading thru the Amazon reviews - I always do - starting w the 3stars... and I ended up getting what I know a SanDisk Extreme 64GB to start w. The Pro seemed to be over kill and some of the other brands seemed to have issues... so finger crossed.
I already have a monopod and an OK tripod and just ordered a light tent that I have had my eye on (not sure if this Rebel will be good for a tent or if my Panasonic HM-TA1 will be suitable...)
This little butt hole town in PA actually has a big art community so will be talking to the photographers as well about what they use after this meh FUCKING shit hit the fan right now! UNBELIEVABLE!
@dashcloud Um. I was trying to make a haha about those who were pissed off about the fun & games with the April 1st Fuko. I really couldn't believe what I was reading...
I have been a long time woot member - never got a boc and never got the chance for a bag from meh. I also have many more things to do with my life than spend precious time going on about a Fuko bag.
I do believe in consumer rights ... but this aint that.
UGH and btw, what did I write about that Panasonic? that was an old woot purchase (maybe before the sale to Amazon???) I should have written the little amazing Pentax MX-1 (also a woot purchase (thanks to the members who recommended the camera at that time)).
Now fun & games with this Rebel - formatted the 32GB card from the MX-1 and about to test it out now. Thanks to all those who helped out here and continue to help with all the support!
Bought this for my daughter as her high school graduation gift. She had been borrowing my old Digital Rebel until it finally wore out a couple months ago after 19,000+ shots. Cried when she opened it, she was so happy to get her own NEW DSLR.
I was glad to see the kit lens that came with the T5 has IS on it. Looking forward to comparing it to my 30D & 5D. Thanks Meh!

@mauisean "card of soul crushing debt."

@Fen_Star The editing software is actually not as bad as you'd expect.
Sooo, is this thing 4G or what?
Can you post to the Facebook with it?
It took so long to load for not being a fuku...

I still use film, so I'll pass
@somf69 I have a film on my glassware. Will this remove it?
I bought this last time or so it was posted. I love it and works great. There was an issue where a few oil spots appeared on the sensor, but Canon honored the year after purchase warranty and they cleaned it for free.
I have this camera. I use it on automatic all the time and 95% of pics turn out great.
@lichme Are you in the other 5%?
@Fen_Star SAVAGE
@Fen_Star RUTHLESS
@rcade81 Keep Ruth out of this, man.
@stinks S/He did. Ruthless means "without Ruth."*
@stinks He did leave Ruth out, he said Ruth LESS.
@btreth Thanks, Shannons.
@lichme I agree. Last time this camera was for sale here I got it as a present for my wife -- her first SLR. We've taken it on a few vacations and the pictures have always turned out great.
This should sell out,very good price for a nice camera.
I would go for this if I didn't have the T3.
Torn between Idol and Bowie:
She cried "Meh! Meh! Meh!"
Hot tramp, I love you ... meh!
I'm a camera slut, but just got a new Nikon last month, otherwise I'd be picturing myself with this one. Uh, with a front zoom or something slightly suggestive and almost funny.
Nice. Too bad I can't afford it today.

@haydesigner Whith CHDK/ML, I don't know why anyone would buy a Nikon.
@Fen_Star, as impressive as Point-n-Shoots can be, even when hacked, there is a ton to be said about the quality of the glass. Can't hack your way into better lenses. :-)
A Canon Rebel was my first real camera back when I was a kid. Love those things.
This is one of those times I wish it was legal to sell a kidney.
Finally a good offering, but I'm also a Nikon guy and not in the market. Still, good job, not totally Meh.

Nice deal Meh. I got one already and am gonna be getting the 6 next. You can't beat the price on this.

for like $230 I think is what I picked mine up for.

@RifterNova Thank you. I was just about to pull the trigger on this deal when, after seeing your post, I went to the Cannon site. Great tip.
my phone has a camera, just like everyone else. no thanks.
@boygenius1991, hey, if you're happy with that quality, you're right to not want this.
@haydesigner Agreed. However, I am not. I would have been all over this if not for my D90 and my daughter's 3300 bundle last Christmas. Alas, it isn't feasible even to pick this up as a spare now. @Dankk Very nice photos!
@Dankk Sold!
@Dankk Nice pics of the landlord.
@Dankk Cats are ugly filthy pests but the pics look ok.
@Dankk MEH was always a wholesome, family site - until someone just had to post the pussy pics. But seriously folks, those are some good lookin' pics.

@paulgraham Do you not own a credit card? This is a bad excuse.
OMG! I FOUND THE ALL THE CAMERA SNOBS!
WHERE WERE ALL THE FLASHLIGHT SNOBS THE OTHER DAY!! I NEEDED YOU!
@therealjrn they likely had their fingers blocking their ears.

Sony HX9V. The model is trailing edge for this specific product line, so it should be very affordable by this point. 1080/60fps. Might be worth looking into.
@ozzallos At that price it's tempting, but I really don't want to buy another point and shoot.
@Techrocket9 used Sony NEX-6 and NEX-5R (both older discontinued models but great for video) can be had for very good prices and shoot 60p

@bjfaber at the very least, it should have him considering different options...
$25 cheaper on woot with more lens options
@Matryoshka where? woot is soooooo confusing!
@fjp999 under sellout tab in one of their box deals that expires on April 4th.
@fjp999 http://sellout.woot.com/offers/canon-rebel-t5-dslr-camera-lens-bundles-4?ref=ref%3Dcnt_wp_1_42
@fjp999 they appear to be open box units.
@Matryoshka actually, i think you get an 18-55 and another lens for that price
@thismyusername definitely open box
@thismyusername It also looks like you don't get to pick the lens option. So, you pick a quantity and they choose the lens for you?
Also, only a 30-day warranty.
@theredia I'm confused by that too. I, personally, wouldn't get to hung up on it. Kit lenses are not high quality lenses anyhow. I would get the best deal on the camera body and use the extra cash for quality lenses. I keep my kit lenses in my bag as back up lenses.

So Canon was sending consumers to contact the Singapore division for service. Which is illegal in Singapore, I guess. Sooo...USA, yeah?
@theredia you'll notice whenever they sell these they state meh will back up the warranty if canon fails to... look at the warranty up in the details.
...also click here for information straight from the cephalopods beak.
Open Box alternative at woot for $270: http://sellout.woot.com/offers/canon-rebel-t5-dslr-camera-lens-bundles-4?ref=so_cnt_wp_1_43
@tinsami1 Dat 30-day warranty though...
@FightingMongoos for $30 you get 11 more months of warrenty,
Payday is in 4 days! Aaaaah!
I'm not buying it, but it's not a Meh.
I decided to go with this.
I guess I should start learning to shooting in RAW now.
In another camera I have a SanDisk Extreme. Is that the recommended card I should go with for this Rebel? Just go ahead and get a 128GB card? Best price?
@fjp999 get a 64 gig class 10 card. That should give you well over 2k shots of you're shooting in raw only.
@fjp999 also, get Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) and learn to use it.
@fjp999 There's a RAW+JPEG mode too. The bundled software isn't bad, but if you know photoshop definitely stick with that.
@Matryoshka Thanks. Great info.Thought RAW was much larger format.
@fjp999 heres 128gigs for under $50 shipped http://www.amazon.com/PNY-Elite-Performance-Speed-P-SDX128U395-GE/dp/B00WWBCQEI/ref=lp_1197396_1_9?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1459323047&sr=1-9
256 gigs for under $80 http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WWBCS1Y
both have over 50 megabit write speeds for burst, raw or hd video shooting
@godholio I am so poor at learning complicated soft but retaining camera functions will be a chore.
I have been told I have a pretty good eye so I will make an effort.
I read on dpreview that there are some great youtube tutorials as well as online photography courses. Maybe they will help.
@fjp999 Memory Card Size thoughts:
(1) SD cards are cheap so going large isn't hard.
(2) Decide first whether you'll shoot video since it eats card memory for breakfast.
(3) Consider shooting photos in JPEG+RAW since raw since RAW gives you more fix/creative options later but note that RAW not only takes a lot of card memory but also storage space on your PC/online. (Consider deleting the RAW files once you're happy with your JPEG's to save space.)
(4) if you shoot mostly photos, even JPEG+RAW, consider getting several 32GB cards vs. a few 128GB cards.
The best part about Canons is usually not the camera, but the open source firmware people release for it. Check out CHDK or Magic Lantern.
@ozzallos Neither of which support this camera. Nor the last Canon I had (XSi). Not that I'm bitter, nope.
@castlelogical
Damn, bad luck then.
Rebel, meh
This seems like a good deal but I'm not into camehras.
Same camera & lens combo (albeit refurbished) directly from Canon w/1 yr warr. for $250: http://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/eos-rebel-t5-ef-s-18-55mm-is-ii-lens-kit-refurbished
I'm glad I got the Nikon D3200 from meh back in August. It was the same price, and seems to be superior in pretty much every way.
I would love to get this, but I lack the funds. Maybe next time :/ I hope there is a next time.
What is this, woot.com? I'm looking for something a little more meh, not something useful at a good price.
Be careful, kids. A cheap starter DSLR is the gateway to many expensive lenses, accessories, image processing software, and eventually expensive DSLRs.
It happened to me, and I blame the old, better Woot.
I'm new to meh....is this new or refurbished?
@babyphat823 Condition: New (you'll find this information in the specs list for any item) Mehlcome!
Tired of point-and-shoot. Hope I made the right choice.
If we could paint every automobile in the country pink.....we would have a pink car-nation.
@attyvette Someone who shares your love of puns.
What the FUCK meh.
@fjp999 So what you're saying is that you want all of your orders to use SmartPost from now on?
@fjp999 Okay- I'll blame the goat (@KDemo) for my bad read of the post.
@dashcloud Obviously.
Thanks Meh!
… HOLY SHIT
@mfladd You got me back like 2 months too late
What was the price on these? I need to know even though it will only make me hate myself more for missing them.
@jbartus $294
@thismyusername damn. I’ve been meaning to get a second body for some time now, so many situations occur where there’s just not time to switch lenses…
Do you know if they sold out?
@jbartus Don’t think so, usually someone mentions it in the comments.
@thismyusername I’ll just have to hope they come up again. Ain’t nothing better than Meh deals that I can add to my business expenses.
@jbartus You might want to check out the Canon refurbished sale ending today. Dealnews.com can get you there. (I’m tempted by the t6i for $529.)
@sligett hmm I will consider it thanks
