@mediocrebot Odd...Abe's price is $385 with free shipping, Meh's price is $380 plus $5 shipping. Coincidence? Maybe Abe and Meh are one and the same? Explains the trash talk or am I a paranoid conspiracy theorist?
@username have some more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
@ktngandhi The auto focus on the T4i is pretty slow and searches a lot on video (I am not even close to an expert though, I am just learning). I would recommend you doing more research and view examples of that before purchasing for film making. I'm not sure I would be happy with that, even at this cheap price. Someone else that does more of movie making care to chime in?
Hah, funny reading about Abes of Main in the description. I ordered a Canon t5i back in May from a similar website - AJrichie.com. Well its 5 months later and guess what! The camera is STILL 'Backordered'! Ha! I call them every couple of weeks to check up on it, and get some more BS excuse of why its still backordered, and they try to upsell me. Don't worry, i've given up on the AJrichie order, but I still like to call them to see what their excuse is this week :).
I like the price here, but I would rather have the T5i, so meh.
@djklup Problem with that is at some point, when that camera is obsolete, they'll fulfill that open order and you'll be on the hook for it. Cancel it now, because you know their return policy is going to be even worse than what you've gone through. "Yeah, we have a 90-day return policy, but you placed the order 5 months ago, so we can't do anything for you."
@SJPadbury I was too nervous to cancel. I was afraid that they would just send me a piece of garbage and I would have to deal with their crappy customer service even longer. So I just cancelled my card on the order just to be safe :)
Wait, wait... Wait wait wait... You can't go and make the meh icon not a face. You have a little less than 24 hours to fix this sub-meh discrepancy. Get to work.
@jsh139 Not necessarily. Keeping your free eye open while shooting both keeps it color- and light-balanced with your shooting eye and gives you a way to make sure nothing's about to barge into your frame. I rarely close my free eye when I'm shooting.
Four words guys: CHDK. Well, I guess that's four letters, but the point is... Canon Hack Development Kit will open a plethora of unimaginable capabilities on this camera.
Now... to dig around in the cushions of my couch for three hundred and eighty bucks in nickles and quarters...
@ruouttaurmind Also, a lot of times on freeware like this, "not supported" means "not tested on the model." Being a Nikon guy, I really wish someone would step up and write something like these for my camera. Especially considering Canon's intelligent enough to say it's fine for people to use these and doesn't affect the warranty or support.
@editorkid I installed CHDK on my little Canon pocket camera. The best part about it... it all lives on the SD card. Remove the SD card and the camera boots back up just like it came from the factory!
@ruouttaurmind Yeah! I forget which Canon P&S I had back in the day, but CHDK made a decent little shooter that much better. Glad you recommended it and hopefully folks will find out that one or the other of these apps runs pretty decently on this one.
@ChristianGeek linked article from today's story was pretty blunt "When researching this article the name Abe’s of Maine kept popping up, so we refer to them as the poster child bad online dealers."
Boy, that is tempting. I've been lusting after a DSLR for a while now but I just do not have $380 to spend on one right now. Darn. It's a no meh, no buy.
@Nemesis158 I was looking at that 35mm prime for my D3200. Seems hard to beat at just under $200 but then again every other lens is just ridiculously expensive.
@Nemesis158 - those are the same four I have on my long-in-the-tooth D3000. Wish this deal was a Nikon. @PanicSwitch paired to a good body, the 35mm is top notch. Anecdotally, it's not as tack sharp as my 50mm, but the wider angle and autofocus make up for it.
@Stallion I'm with you... bought a D90 when it came out and upgraded to the D7100. I do a lot of nature photography so my fave lenses are the 105mm macro and the 70-300mm zoom.
So I've used this camera, renting it out through school, and its pretty damn great. Trouble is, try taking photos out in public with it. Ended up taking lots of pictures with my phone mostly because you could pull it off without folks staring at you. Its really strange that people get wary of the one person with a camera when there's a dang camera in everyone's hands these days.
@Dash It's probably not that you had a camera... I'm guessing it was because you had a camera and were sitting on the sidewalk next to the air vents... ;D
@Dash If you're trying to be discrete with a DSLR, switch to live view on the back screen, hold it slightly away from your face, and pretend to be reviewing your shots or fiddling with the controls while you frame and shoot.
I scored a Canon 70D with 18-135mm lens for about $1100 last year during the holiday season through Amazon proper. They just kept lowering the price (I had to go to Amazon a week after I bought it because they dropped the price $100 again and they gave me a price match refund).
I only buy from authorized dealers because Canon will not honor the warranty if you buy from elsewhere. Also, I like the comfort of knowing that the camera isn't a gray market special.
If only this had an i after it, I would buy it. I will stick with my T2i, however the price was $850 at the time, no joke, so if you don't have an SLR and want a budget unit, definitely consider this!
@moondrake The 'i' generally means it has more features. Like faster burst rate, or higher native ISO, cross-type focal points, etc. The Rebel i line is a small step below the X0D mid-range DSLRs.
Well crap. Just paid the credit card down to get a better credit score for a home loan! Then you throw this awesome deal out! The potential of 30 years higher interest is forcing me to click the meh button. Any other time this would have been purchased!
Seriously if anyone wanted to buy this and ship it to me I would totally be down with that, since I gave my old DSLR to my niece to help her out without thinking I couldn't replace it anytime soon.
@kadagan It's just a joke about how we don't use pagination on our forums (breaking up long topics into pages). Normally @phatmass cites our lack of pagination as a reason for not buying, because for whatever reason he looOOooOOoves pagination.
@JonT Thanks for clearing that up.. I knew what pagination normally means, but I'm new to DSLR, so like an idiot I thought it had a different meaning in that context.. haha
@kadagan The Canon T5's menu has different pages, which allows you to paginate through the options. I support pagination such as this so will always purchase the maximum of such products.
@Supertainment Don't think it is a lifetime warranty from Canon usually. Since Meh is selling it below suggested price and isn't a legit dealer they are giving their own warrant which I would say is pretty cool since they could have easily not offered any type of warranty.
oh thank cripes the screen doesn't articulate or whatever that feature is called. $380 bullet dodged, no mean feat having just returned from late night happy hour.
Solid camera, solid lens, and the usual price is $500 - ignoring the ripoff artists at Abe's (hmm, out of the box missing "kit"... I wonder if that's a fake.... SURVEY SAYS: YES!).
Buy it if you want a good camera. If I weren't buying a house right now, I'd snatch it up for the lens and spare body.
Good deal for those looking to move up from point-and-shoot. Although, I saw a lady taking pictures at a high school volleyball game yesterday with a 5DIII, battery grip, and what looked like a 70-200L, all through live view shooting unsupported. It doesn't explain why you would use a $4000+ gear setup as a point-and-shoot, but it probably does explain why her arms were ginormous.
This is a fantastic deal for anyone wanting to break into a DSLR camera, but has a tight budget. I wish there was something like this when I got mine (also a Canon), as I paid nearly twice as much.
However, what the hell is it doing on this site? This is one of the least Meh deals I've seen here. It's an odd mixture of thrilled and disappointed. Thrillappointed?
The Canon T5 is just dreadful. Canon has taken the same mediocre image sensor its been using since 2011’s T3i or thereabouts, slapped it into a case with a processor that’s a couple of years old, a super low-res 460,000 dot LCD display, a mediocre AF system, a max burst rate of 3 fps, and a top ISO of 6400. Yeah, the MSRP of $550 is low, but that’s the same street price as the Canon SL1, which is a much better Canon camera, and definitely not worth the $100 savings over the D3300. But you know what? We bet this thing is going to be in every Black Friday sale this year, and will probably move like gangbusters. If you really want, you can still pick up a Canon T3i for a song if you look around, and it’s actually got better specs than the T5 thanks to a higher-res screen and faster burst. If you want a cheap Canon SLR with years old systems, just buy that and save your money.
Now that's at the MSRP of $550. I'm really curious whether they think this camera would be fine at today's Meh price.
@judy Any DSLR is good to start with, and the value is in the lenses anyway - the body is replaceable and ages quickly. Once you can eloquently describe why a T5 (or any other entry-level model) is not good enough for you, move up.
I have no interest whatsoever in buying a camera, but I'm not clicking Meh and I starred this post and am commenting here because of the writeup about price-fixing. Well done, and thank you for writing it. It's good for people to know about.
If you order a TV and someone from NJ calls you and says, "Hey, we only got a Brazilian model that looks sweet in your bedroom, but can't work in the US," you don't refuse. You tell them to send her over and you'll leave the money on the dresser.
And during that my mother was hospitalized with a bad leg infection. I totally missed GISHWISHes because of it & work. I've been quietly ashamed of not apologizing to @katylava
Things are just finally settling down at the office, but another aggressive deadline for a supposedly deprecated product is giving me the opportunity to correct my mistakes from the last one
@Tiverty the Canon warranty should apply without issue. Use the support button on your order and we'll step in if they don't... or email halp@meh.com. Basically expect return for refund if we can't remedy as Canon would.
I'm right there with a whole bunch of other folk: * Where's the Not Meh But Can't Afford button? * Where can I scrounge up a big sack o' cash that won't get me thrown in jail and/or whacked by Vinnie the Weasel so I can buy one of these from Meh? * I appreciate the copy-writing and publicly calling out skeevy online vendors. Winkle them out of their fetid shadowy holes, shine a big ole spotlight on 'em, that's what I say
@JonT If this doesn't sell out, I do believe this would be the perfect prize to send the Photoshop contest winners. You know, the whole photo thing? Ya dig? I know you guys are not procrastinaters, and I'm definitely not a procrastihater, I'm not sayin, I'm just sayin.
My camera arrived today, and when I opened it up, it appears that the registration card or something had been ripped off the paperwork that came with it?? Is this normal? @JonT

@gmparish Interesting...
Huh. Not bad, actually. But 'meh'. Don't need it.
@mms334 definitely not bad. I actually want this. Too bad I don't have 380$ to spare
@Nexar Want Want Want too. Hey @snapster you accept monopoly money? Oh wait I sold the monopoly game in the garage sale. Sigh.
Where's the "Not meh, but can't afford it" button?
@Nexar The dollar sign goes in front...
@FairfieldWonder Wow you necro'd this thread just to say this? But you're totally right, it does go in front.
@JonT i bet you 100$ i can put dollar sign anywhere.

I'm too broke for this crap, just bring back the t-shirts already.
@bretmkal +1
Nice. I really wish I could.
Not a bad DSLR for a beginner who wants to graduate from a point-n-shoot. Great price, too.
@jsh139 Is that Camera at the same level with Nikon D3200?
@xdanielgs I don't know Nikons, just Canons. But, check out dpreview.com. From what I can tell, the D3200 is the superior camera (from looking at the specs). http://www.dpreview.com/products/compare/side-by-side?products=canon_eos1200d&products=nikon_d3200
I got 100 mehs and this one...isn't a face?
@grammarsheriff There is a face! It just has a camera in front of it...taking a photo of you to celebrate 100 mehs!
Have the t4i and it is awesome for someone like me. Wish I would have paid this price for it. Great deal
@christhegreat i am a iphone film maker using iphone 6 plus now. do you recommend me to buy this t3i?
@ktngandhi The auto focus on the T4i is pretty slow and searches a lot on video (I am not even close to an expert though, I am just learning). I would recommend you doing more research and view examples of that before purchasing for film making. I'm not sure I would be happy with that, even at this cheap price. Someone else that does more of movie making care to chime in?
@christhegreat Thank you for quick reply I am planning to stick with my iphone 6 plus as of now :)
Really nice item, I still use my Canon AE-1 every now and then when I can find B&W film. Would love to own a gem like this. Great item to offer today
The rebel spirit in me says buy, the empty wallet spirit in me says meh.
@jjohns71 Too true!
Hah, funny reading about Abes of Main in the description. I ordered a Canon t5i back in May from a similar website - AJrichie.com. Well its 5 months later and guess what! @djklup That's certainly an effective option, if slightly nuclear.
Wait, wait... Wait wait wait... You can't go and make the meh icon not a face. You have a little less than 24 hours to fix this sub-meh discrepancy. Get to work.
@PWiddy ...but it is a face...it has an eye.
@ChadP I don't know if I am OK with the icon pulling a Wilson but am not going to lie, I did not see the eye last night.
@ChadP Bad photo-taking form. That right eye should be closed.
@jsh139 Not necessarily. Keeping your free eye open while shooting both keeps it color- and light-balanced with your shooting eye and gives you a way to make sure nothing's about to barge into your frame. I rarely close my free eye when I'm shooting.
I like the "tourist" face you did for today. Yes, naysayer(s), that totally is a face! It's just got a camera in front of it!
Ships without a card, people. Save room for that (and a big one, with 18 megapixels)
Four words guys: CHDK. Well, I guess that's four letters, but the point is... Canon Hack Development Kit will open a plethora of unimaginable capabilities on this camera.
Now... to dig around in the cushions of my couch for three hundred and eighty bucks in nickles and quarters...
@ruouttaurmind Magic Lantern is better. But either is good.
@editorkid Magic Lantern's support list mentions the T5i, but not the T5. http://www.magiclantern.fm
@ruouttaurmind Looks like CHDK doesn't support T5 either. http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/For_Developers
@ardgedee Yup, just read up on the CHDK. But also spent some time reading the Canon specs on their website. Doesn't look like it really needs CHDK. This camera has a pretty impressive feature set for the price point. http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/slr_cameras/eos_rebel_t5_18_55_is_ii_kit
@ruouttaurmind Also, a lot of times on freeware like this, "not supported" means "not tested on the model." It's kind of a face if you imagine the lens is the mouth and the flash is a winking eye.
@jsh139 you can see one of the eyes on the left; it's still a face, just with a camera in front of it.
Abes pulled that shit on me, screw those guys
@giroro Did Abe's change owners at some point? I bought from them years ago and didn't have a problem. Sounds like I shouldn't buy from them again.
@ChristianGeek linked article from today's story was pretty blunt "When researching this article the name Abe’s of Maine kept popping up, so we refer to them as the poster child bad online dealers."
it is a face - the character is holding a camera up to their face - we see their left eye.
@dath isn't that their right eye? (unless it's a selfie in the mirror)
Meh's new cameras are actually cheaper than Canon's own refurbs by $60. Good price!
With the requirement of two sales minimum to light up a state (or county) I suspect the map is gonna have vast expanses of white this time around.
Boy, that is tempting. I've been lusting after a DSLR for a while now but I just do not have $380 to spend on one right now. Darn. It's a no meh, no buy.
What happened to the speaker docks?
@joelmw We complained too much maybe???
@joelmw it's not Friday
@joelmw look at what you did.
@hollboll s/you/@Thumperchick/
@editorkid Sorry about that. (This is the autofill for your replies, btw.)
@hollboll You're welcome. :-)
Have only seen Abe's of Maine in price comparisons. Thanks for letting me know that I should give them a wide berth!
The spirit is willing but the bank account isn't.... Sigh.
Wow. I need to work on my reading comprehension. I thought that this was just for a bitchin' lense; not the whole camera!
@Thumperchick It's your own fault!
I love you guys.
@harbour
My heart belongs to Nikon, sorry Canon. Good deal though if you want a Canon and are in the market for a DSLR.
@Stallion aye, if it wasnt for trying to save money and not already having a D5100 + 4 lenses i would buy this....
@Nemesis158 What lenses do you own? I am about to buy my first prime lens, the 35mm f/1.8. The reviews on this Canon on Amazon are so so anyhow.
@Stallion Buy 3. Flip them. Buy Nikon gear with your profits.
@Stallion 18-55mm, 55-200mm, 35mm prime, and an fx format 50mm prime
@Stallion 35mm/1.8, 18-200mm VR. Don't need anything else.
@kingfishcoons Cool, good to know. I have heard nothing but good on this lens. I just need to bite the bullet and actually buy it.
@Nuke Great idea, but I checked eBay and Craigslist and you'd be lucky to get any profit after fee's. Good idea though if it were more lucrative
@PanicSwitch The 35mm is the best $200 you'll spend on a lens. You'll be surprised at the creative possibilities it opens up, especially at 1.8.
@Stallion I'm with you... bought a D90 when it came out and upgraded to the D7100. I do a lot of nature photography so my fave lenses are the 105mm macro and the 70-300mm zoom.

@Dash It's probably not that you had a camera... I'm guessing it was because you had a camera and were sitting on the sidewalk next to the air vents... ;D
@hisgrossness Your handle is perfect for this comment. You've been waiting for this moment, haven't you?
@Dash If you're trying to be discrete with a DSLR, switch to live view on the back screen, hold it slightly away from your face, and pretend to be reviewing your shots or fiddling with the controls while you frame and shoot.
@hisgrossness That's where you take all the artsy photos ;)
@ChristianGeek That's a good tip. I'll keep it in mind.
@joelmw Patience, friend. ;D
@BillLehecka Good deal on the 70D. Yes, Canon won't honor the warranty, but it sounds like Meh is offering to cover it for a year.
If only this had an i after it, I would buy it. I will stick with my T2i, however the price was $850 at the time, no joke, so if you don't have an SLR and want a budget unit, definitely consider this!
@mehdaf What does the i mean? I though Apple had wholly co-opted that letter.
@moondrake The 'i' generally means it has more features. Like faster burst rate, or higher native ISO, cross-type focal points, etc. The Rebel i line is a small step below the X0D mid-range DSLRs.
I want this soooo bad! But meh! divorces cost $$.
Wife is still mad at mega$ spent on my AE-1 program setup in the 80's. It still works good as new!
@Zebra I have an olympus OM1 from 1978 that still works great. Need to sell it though and a bunch of lenses and other stuff
I have a T3i in front of me bought from HSN def not this cheap sounds like a great deal but meh cause i said so
Well crap. Just paid the credit card down to get a better credit score for a home loan! Then you throw this awesome deal out! The potential of 30 years higher interest is forcing me to click the meh button. Any other time this would have been purchased!
우워 카메라도 올라오네
나중에 오토바이 올라오면 그때 사야지
wow, now you have cameras, once you guys sell motorcycles, I am going to buy one @ozinger 저는 자동차 기다리고있습니다.
@MasterST 저는 F-16중고 나오면 살라구요. 전투기 하나 꼭 사고싶어서
@EthanP F-16 refurbished 싸게 나오면 하나 구입하세요
Seriously if anyone wanted to buy this and ship it to me I would totally be down with that, since I gave my old DSLR to my niece to help her out without thinking I couldn't replace it anytime soon.
@xarous I'd love to pay it forward and buy you one, but damn I can't afford to, sorry. Meh
@Stallion No worries mate. It always comes around, I'd be surprise if something so brazen would have gained a "pay it forward" kind of thing.
If this were the Panasonic GH3 ... then maybe.
The Canon T5 has pagination. In for three.
@phatmass What do you mean by pagination? I did a quick google for it in terms of dslr cameras, but I don't understand.. haha
DAMN DAMN DAMN DO WANT>>..... but i'm waiting for new nexus
So the whole narrative is that buying this below "MAP" means I won't be covered by Cannon for life and instead only be covered for a year by Meh?
@Supertainment Don't think it is a lifetime warranty from Canon usually. Since Meh is selling it below suggested price and isn't a legit dealer they are giving their own warrant which I would say is pretty cool since they could have easily not offered any type of warranty.
@Supertainment Cannon does not offer a lifetime warranty to my knowledge. Does Craftsman make cameras?
@Supertainment Pretty sure the Canon warranty is a year as well. So, theoretically the same coverage.
@Stallion Thanks, at 2 am I wasn't the brightest person and I also lack a working knowledge of DSLR warranties.
oh thank cripes the screen doesn't articulate or whatever that feature is called. $380 bullet dodged, no mean feat having just returned from late night happy hour.
@borisparsley Yeah, I am pretty addicted to my articulating screen on the G11. Lets me be taller or shorter and still frame my shots.
Do............... not..........
WANT
I really salivating at a DSLR that shoots video. I feel kind of less awesome with my Rebel XSi.

The Wirecutter has some choice words for the T5.
Now that's at the MSRP of $550. I'm really curious whether they think this camera would be fine at today's Meh price.
@judy Any DSLR is good to start with, and the value is in the lenses anyway - the body is replaceable and ages quickly. Once you can eloquently describe why a T5 (or any other entry-level model) is not good enough for you, move up.
wild-positive-tent
I hope so!
@kadagan What're you...going to do with your camera...?
@hart I'll leave that up to the imagination ;)
I have no interest whatsoever in buying a camera, but I'm not clicking Meh and I starred this post and am commenting here because of the writeup about price-fixing. Well done, and thank you for writing it. It's good for people to know about.
@Condalmo I live to serve. Thanks!
i liked T2 better
Damn you, meh. In for one.
At least we'll have four of those handy water bottle thingies from yesterday's deal to take with us on our photography excursion...
If you order a TV and someone from NJ calls you and says, "Hey, we only got a Brazilian model that looks sweet in your bedroom, but can't work in the US," you don't refuse. You tell them to send her over and you'll leave the money on the dresser.
@JerseyFrank Hey, you're back! Haven't seen you around these parts much lately.
@JonT I was stuck in Hell at work, partly of my own making, to hit a deadline. We hit it, but I'm not proud.
@JerseyFrank it's cool. just glad you're okay. it's always disconcerting when internet friends disappear.
I purchased it and really excited for it's delivery, thanks for an amazing deal to get me into the world of photography Meh!
I have been trying to search for the year warranty Meh says they offer and the details on that. Can anyone enlighten me?
@Tiverty the Canon warranty should apply without issue. Use the support button on your order and we'll step in if they don't... or email halp@meh.com. Basically expect return for refund if we can't remedy as Canon would.
@snapster Thank you breakfast octopus. Appreciate the reply!
I'm right there with a whole bunch of other folk:
* Where's the Not Meh But Can't Afford button?
* Where can I scrounge up a big sack o' cash that won't get me thrown in jail and/or whacked by Vinnie the Weasel so I can buy one of these from Meh?
* I appreciate the copy-writing and publicly calling out skeevy online vendors. Winkle them out of their fetid shadowy holes, shine a big ole spotlight on 'em, that's what I say
No Georgia Red. . . for that alone, meh.
only because I have a Nikon though.
I love purple.
My state hasn't bought any, woot woot! Nikon Fans Representin' against you Canon fools!
I broke down and got it.
My camera arrived today, and when I opened it up, it appears that the registration card or something had been ripped off the paperwork that came with it?? Is this normal? @JonT
@kadagan the office consensus is that the important part of the paperwork seems to be okay.
@kadagan FYI, you can register it online: https://b2cweb.usa.canon.com/b2cweb/view/myAccountHome.jsf
@JonT Is it normal to have part of it ripped off on a "new" product though? Thanks!
@jsh139 Thanks jsh! That's what I'll do. It just surprised me since this is listed as "new", I didn't expect it to be opened
The link to Consumerist is broken.
@gominosensei Well, this thread is almost four years old.
