Brag Post: Scouting for Food 2016
15Some of you know that Cub Scouts has all but taken over my life (in a good way). With the help of many families and friends, I was able to put together a successful event this year.
Scouting for Food is a national service project to collect food from neighbors to be donated to local food banks/pantries. Our Cub Scout Pack holds a movie night so that after the children have collected the food, adults can help sort and count the collection.
This year I decided that plopping the kids on the carpet and throwing up an animated flick wasn’t going to cut it. I decided to turn it into a movie premiere night where the stars of our show were the Scouts that served their community.
Have a look for yourself and virtually pat these kids on the back: https://goo.gl/photos/usqdf4mXHuZvERw48

Wow…very nice…how many bags did you bring in? Looks like hundreds!
@mikibell 1535 items. We gave each Scout 10 bags to hand out and collect. I don’t think we got a count on how many actual bags came back. We had about 35 Scouts participate.
Our roster was very thin (20 Scouts?) when my son and I joined. This year I was handed the reins and have managed to get a good number of leaders in needed positions and empowered them to make a difference. We’ve managed to double the Pack size and our turnout percentage has turned WAY UP - a very good indication that our events are fun, engaging, and worthwhile. I hope to reach 60 Scouts by the end of the year and 100 by the end of next.
@JerseyFrank truly wonderful…we count bags, I think with an assumed number of items…that is quite fantastic, regardless! Glad you are enjoying your scouting experiencing again!!
That. was. AWESOME.
I’m totally stealing your idea. Just so you know.
@Pavlov Thanks! If you really do steal this idea, know that getting a limo donated from a limousine rental company on a Saturday night is nigh impossible. I managed to get one from an unconventional source… a funeral home.
@JerseyFrank I had a feeling when I saw the doors open… good thinking!
Not that it is particularly relevant, but the entire 5 years my son was in Cub Scouts, the woman who headed up our pack’s “Scouting for Food” drive, referred to it as “Food for Scouting”. It was an innocuous mistake, so I never called attention to the fact that she was completely missing the play on words. It eventually started to make me grin, not because she made a mistake, but she said it that way every time, even when she was showing a sign or slide-show that clearly said “Scouting for Food”.
Unfortunately, I think it ultimately became a needless source of tension between us. She would say “Food for Scouting” and I, wanting to be polite, would not correct her. She, picking up on my subtle smirk, would be thinking “what is so @$%* funny, jerk-face?”, but being too polite, would not mention it.
@JerseyFrank
apologies for being sentimental and obvious but …
Well Done. I am a little in awe.

I don’t know where in Jersey you’re from, but if you live where for boy scouts your options are 9 or 139, encourage your kids to go to 139. Trust me.
