Rayon is a semi-synthetic fiber, made from natural sources of regenerated cellulose, such as wood and related agricultural products.[1] It has the same molecular structure as cellulose. It is also called viscose.[2] Many types and grades of viscose fibers and films exist. Some imitate the feel and texture of natural fibers such as silk, wool, cotton, and linen. The types that resemble silk are often called artificial silk.
Okay, I’m at a loss. It isn’t microfiber. But it’s basically wood.
The biodegradability of various fibers in soil burial and sewage sludge was evaluated by Korean researchers. Rayon was found to be more biodegradable than cotton, and cotton more than acetate.
@1DisabledWarVet@guybrush01@stinks I don’t care if it’s from Lichtenstein, it’s still just rayon, and the rayon isn’t even half of what’s in the sheets. Rayon from bamboo is identical to rayon from recycled cardboard or rayon from cotton linters or rayon from sugar beet pulp. It’s all still just rayon, and there are a bunch of reasons why it fell out of popular use in the US quite a while back. Now the fashionistas have been trying to bring it back disguised as “Viscose” and “Modal” and "mumblemumblemumblefrom BAMBOO!!11!" but a whole bunch of us understand this dodge, and aren’t having any.

I ran these sheets by my wife and she said “no way” and gave me the scoop on bamboo sheets, which is all we use now do to how soft and delightful they feel.
Okay, so I wearied of waiting for cotton sheets here, so I bought these Calvin Klein sheets a month ago from Costco (in-store) for $35 (I think). They’ve been surprisingly great, and I later bought another set for my son’s room.
@haydesigner, a true hero for the masses. Never thought to check Costco for sheets, I’ll keep my eyes peeled in the future. I always was a cheap sheets guy, but I recently got cotten sheets as a gift. They ruined polyester sheets for me forever.
@haydesigner@stinks
These do come with a $20 costco card, but that only helps if you consistently shop at costco. Also these are only simple majority cotton. They’re 49% modal, which is another type of rayon.
@kostia OMG, yes, these “bamboo” rayon sheets will leave you hot/sticky when you awake (even if you haven’t done anything in the evening before to justify it!) They are as bad as microfiber, e.g. polyester. Really gross IMO. Stick with at least 80% cotton. or silk, if you “sleep hot.”
@kostia I just switched to my bamboo/cotton sheets specifically because they are cooler than cotton. But I am not sure about the microfiber. But bamboo is usually pretty cool.
@Fuzzalini@kostia As noted elsewhere, there is a lot of fraud going on with the “bamboo” fabrics. Many of them are not actually bamboo fiber, but rayon derived from decomposing bamboo into cellulose slurry and processing it into that artificial fiber.
Cal Kings are absolutely worth it. Yes, you lose access to cheap sheets, but do you really need more than two sets per bed anyway? And you can stretch old sheets on, if you need to.
Rayon from bamboo is cheap to make, but it’s indistinguishable from rayon from paper mill digester sludge or rayon from highly processed coal slurry or any of the other ways that rayon has been made over the century-plus that the stuff has been in mass production in the US. It has many of the disadvantages of plastics when it comes to moisture retention, it can shrink like raw cotton, and about the only advantage it has it its lack of durability in a landfill - which doesn’t count here because these are a blend with polyester.
@Kyeh They’re made of plastic. Bacteria don’t grow on plastic. It’s like saying “plastic milk jugs are antibacterial” or “Saran cling wrap is antibacterial”. What’s left out is the bacteria (and mites) growing on your dead skin cells that you shed while you’re sleeping.
@Kyeh@mike808 You would be amazed at where microbes will grow. In the humidity of South Florida, it will grow on camera lenses. You need active measures to keep it at bay.
I have long recommended nuking from orbit, but so far no one is willing to approve the purchase order.
Wow, the one time a company actually prominently says “rayon from bamboo” rather than lying and saying it’s bamboo, and they’re still lying because it’s mostly polyester!
And probably not actually antimicrobial, that’s just a lie that’s so common about rayon that they’ve realized they can get away with it because of precedent.
(Actual bamboo fabric essentially no longer exists because rayon is cheaper and marketing is apparently allowed to say it has all the properties that actual bamboo fabric has even though that’s not true at all.)
@ravenblack The big box stores even agreed with the Feds to stop advertising “bamboo” sheets, towels, etc. but that doesn’t stop 3rd parties from listing “bamboo” products on their sites.
@ninkumpoop Yeah, they’ve also moved on to doing the same thing with eucalyptus because that sounds more exotic and hasn’t already been burned enough that cursory searches start turning up things like the link above.
The manufacturer is a lying liar. That doesn’t obligate Meh to repeat their lies. Y’all rename items all the time, when they’re not nasty plastic sheets.
Yeah, I really wanna sleep on some recycled-cellulose semi-synthetic fiber product invented in the 1840s. The only thing better than sleeping on silk sheets is GOLD sheets-- No, erm… sorry, I meant artificial silk sheets. Yuck.

Mmm… rayon.

Okay, I’m at a loss. It isn’t microfiber. But it’s basically wood.
@guybrush01 Cotton, that’s some fine sheet you got there.
@guybrush01 @stinks
This is still a majority plastic. 60% microfiber
@guybrush01 @stinks, This Rayon is from Bamboo!
@1DisabledWarVet @guybrush01 @stinks I don’t care if it’s from Lichtenstein, it’s still just rayon, and the rayon isn’t even half of what’s in the sheets. @1DisabledWarVet @guybrush01 @werehatrack
Looking at you, MeUndies.
@guybrush01 @thechilipepper0
Yes, but it’s a “90gsm of Microfiber”.
/image 90gsm
@stinks Don’t come for Meundies! Best in the biz…
@guybrush01 @stinks @thechilipepper0
Yup, and microfiber gets “pilly.”
I ran these sheets by my wife and she said “no way” and gave me the scoop on bamboo sheets, which is all we use now do to how soft and delightful they feel.
100% rayon/viscose or nothing.
@guybrush01 @stinks Heh heh, you said “,wood”.
So, if you recycle, can you get bamboo from rayon?
And then, can I feed it to my pandas?
@phendrick If it’s biodegradable, then yes, you could potentially use it to provide matter to soild used to grow bamboo.
@brainmist @phendrick …provide additional organic matter to soils…
That would work, sort of, but other things would be needed as well.
Okay, so I wearied of waiting for cotton sheets here, so I bought these Calvin Klein sheets a month ago from Costco (in-store) for $35 (I think). They’ve been surprisingly great, and I later bought another set for my son’s room.
You probably have to be a member to see the link
@haydesigner nope.
Now $44.97 with shipping.
@stinks… that’s King Size, they aren’t offering Queen size online for whatever reason.
@haydesigner, a true hero for the masses. Never thought to check Costco for sheets, I’ll keep my eyes peeled in the future. I always was a cheap sheets guy, but I recently got cotten sheets as a gift. They ruined polyester sheets for me forever.
@haydesigner I’ve been using jersey sheets for years. I love them. I buy them on Amazon and at Target.
@haydesigner @stinks
These do come with a $20 costco card, but that only helps if you consistently shop at costco. Also these are only simple majority cotton. They’re 49% modal, which is another type of rayon.
@haydesigner @stinks You can always tuck them in. And you can still use them when you upgrade to a king bed
Would these be hot? I need cool.
@kostia yes, because they are 60% plastic
@kostia OMG, yes, these “bamboo” rayon sheets will leave you hot/sticky when you awake (even if you haven’t done anything in the evening before to justify it!) They are as bad as microfiber, e.g. polyester. Really gross IMO. Stick with at least 80% cotton. or silk, if you “sleep hot.”
@CBL_WV @boygenius1991 Thank you. Will stick with my cotton sheets. Or not stick.
@kostia 100% bamboo sheets are cooling - I have some and LOVE them - but as others have said, these are 60% microfiber which is just an abomination
@kostia I’m laying in mine might now (don’t get royal blue - they’re SUPER blue), and I don’t find them to be hot at all.
@kostia I just switched to my bamboo/cotton sheets specifically because they are cooler than cotton. But I am not sure about the microfiber. But bamboo is usually pretty cool.

Noooo…!!! Giant pandas in western China could be at risk of starvation because the bamboo plants that they eat are beginning to die off!!!
There’s a bamboo shortage, pandas are starving, and meh is making it worse by selling bamboo sheets!
@eeterrific blame this month’s goat!
No CA King again. Sigh.
@cheapbastard CA King beds are an abomination if you’re not at least 6’6" tall, and skinny too. LOL.
@CBL_WV @cheapbastard Realllly? I’m interested, then.
@CBL_WV @cheapbastard @EvilSmoo
Cal Kings are absolutely worth it. Yes, you lose access to cheap sheets, but do you really need more than two sets per bed anyway? And you can stretch old sheets on, if you need to.
Every time I get these for our house, my wife accuses me of trying to get her in the sheets.
@hchavers Maybe you should offer to do the laundry! LOL.
@CBL_WV @hchavers Can confirm, a freshly made bed with sheets I didn’t have to wash myself are definitely a turn on.

How do they make sheets antimicrobial?
@Kyeh Tiny little microscopic plastic signs that say “no microbes allowed.”
@Kyeh They’re made of plastic. Bacteria don’t grow on plastic. It’s like saying “plastic milk jugs are antibacterial” or “

There are all-cotton anti-microbial sheets too: https://www.costco.com/hotel-signature-antimicrobial-800-thread-count-supima-cotton-6pc-sheet-set.product.100684193.html
@Kyeh @mike808 I have disappointing news for you about the armpits of your favorite polyester bowling shirt.

Perhaps they don’t realize that it’s the only way to be sure.

The title: Rayon
The details: Plastic

@whogots And while the item listing banner flag says “Rayon from Bamboo”, the extended description above starts out with “Bamboo from Rayon”.
Yeah, I really wanna sleep on some recycled-cellulose semi-synthetic fiber product invented in the 1840s. The only thing better than sleeping on silk sheets is GOLD sheets-- No, erm… sorry, I meant artificial silk sheets. Yuck.
