@tweezak I came here to say chili as well! Surprised it doesn’t get more votes. So many varieties and possibilities with different meats, beans, and levels of spice. Chili is also great as leftovers, having a few days to coalesce.
@IndifferentDude Best of all, at this time of year in much of the US, you don’t even have to drive all thge way to town to get your groundhog; they’re available freshly killed along the side of many roads, for free!
@IndifferentDude@werehatrack if I were going to eat groundhog, I think you should harvest it yourself from your own backyard. A 12 gauge will just turn it inside out for you.
Disclaimer: I only know this because of dealing with one that was destroying the foundation of a shed and picked his exit tunnel next to the backstop.
Protip. If you want to make soup let it out of the hole first or it will just drop down. Personally…
That’s a lot of lead to pick out, and it’s a large gopher. I wouldn’t but you do you
@phendrick We have an Amish market around the corner from us, and they have ginormous smoked ham hocks. My wife makes a slow cooked split pea soup a few times a year (typically when the weather is cold) and it’s so good as all the meat falls off the hock. I do watch my sodium intake for a bit after that, however
I make a mean vichyssoise when leeks are on sale. My daughter loves it and as a little kid she always called it ‘fishy-shwa’.
Edit - I also have dried kombu and bonito flakes to make my own dashi for miso soup. I don’t have the patience to ferment my own miso though Super easy yummy soup.
Living here in the tundra, we enjoy lots of soup, to warm from the inside. First place would be chili, a close second is chicken tortilla, followed by vegetable beef and potato&ham.
My own homemade Butternut Squash soup with added Sweet Potato, Celery, Carrots, Greek Yogurt, and a dash of Cayenne Pepper and Salt. Boil everything in vegetable broth, Puree with the Vitamix, add puree back to pot and simmer. Add some Ginger if you wish. Or, a bit of Nutmeg and Cinnamon to taste. Talk about a sweet, creamy, and spicy experience going on inside your mouth! And it’s really, really good for you.
Delicious soup.
Chicken vegetable, not bloody noodle.
Having just returned from Japan, I’m tempted to say miso. But French onion still wins.
Beef barley.
@katbyter Yes this is good too. My mom used to make homemade beef barley which was really good.
Tomato Basil, autumn squash, cream of mushroom. I can’t decide.
Bean soup
@katbyter with plenty of bacon or ham!
@katbyter - Rancho Gordo?
Broccoli cheddar. In a bread bowl.

Froot Loops in milk
@awk [agitator]
@awk No. Cheerios in milk. (for those new on here there is an old thread about whether cereal is soup or not).
No Soup For You!
More soup for me!
I was GOING to say there were no bad soups, and then read @awk 's comment.
But I love potato/ dairy based. Zuppa Toscana, oyster stew, good ol’ potato…
But there are very few bad soups (that don’t come in a can).
Seriously, though, how did pho not make the survey?
@brainmist Yes - I could eat a different soup every day for a month and enjoy it! As long as it’s not that anemic Campbells stuff.
@brainmist We have great pho place nearby. I love to cook, but I haven’t been brave enough to try and make that broth… yet.
I don’t eat soup! It is Yucky!
@mycya4me Me either; I slurp and drink it!!
Egg drop soup.
Chili.

/showme delicious ramen noodle soup
@heartny That does look good!
(I like Japanese ramen, not that mouth-scorching Korean stuff.)
@mediocrebot I’m sorry, but that makes me nauseated to even look at it. lol
@heartny, I prefer phò over ramen.
Split pea soup, when properly prepared from scratch. (Except not growing my own peas.)
And with hot buttered cornbread on the side.
@phendrick Yes mom’s was excellent (which was her mom’s recipe). Her generation (and above) made far more things from scratch.
