@readnj i came to say “from a cart on a Philly street.”
In college i drove for sophmore to senior year the 300 miles from home to school after each break. My senior year (early 90s) 2 freshman joined me, one was the daughter of one of the Philly pretzel co’s CEOs and he’d give us a bag of18 for the ride, she never had a leftover when she got to school.
@readnj Or Philly without mustard. Or Philly with cheese or cheese and mustard. There was a Philly Pretzel Factory store next to where I work so I’ve had, and love, all of their products: pretzel dog, sausage, pepperoni, or cheese steak plus some ideas of my own: used instead of biscuits for dipping in stew and even made pretzel (bread)crumb chicken cutlets.
@callow@readnj I have a Philly Pretzel Factory about 5 minutes away from me. I occasionally stop in the morning to grab a bag of 20 or 30 for work. I put them in an insulated bag and they’re still warm and steamy when I get to work 45 minutes later. The savages attack within seconds. Their Tuesday 2 for $2 pretzel dogs are hard to resist.
@readnj Came here to post this! I was born and raised in Philly, and grew up on Philly pretzels. The best ones are the end pieces, so you get some extra crispy crusty parts on the side. Though I wouldn’t be a Philly boy if I didn’t take issue with some of the replies… YELLOW mustard? Oh, no. The one true Pretzel Mustard is a spicy brown mustard. Gulden’s will do.
I live in New York City now, and I’m jonesing. I’m going to be in Philly this weekend, and you bet your bippy I’ll be hitting up Philly Pretzel Factory while I’m there. They’re not the best pretzels, but they’ll certainly do to sate the craving.
@sanspoint Damn, we probably should have jumped on the opportunity to own the franchises in NYC. Other than having to be at work at 4 am, it seems like a reasonably easy business to run.
Snyder’s of Hanover used to make garlic butter pretzel nugget things. I got hopelessly addicted to them in college, but haven’t been able to find them in years. I’m pretty sure they’ve been discontinued.
Straight from the oven at the farmer’s market - Amish soft pretzels. If you’ve never had one you’re truly missing out on a great pleasure in life. They get a little butter dip after coming out of the oven. They’re essentially what Auntie Anne’s based theirs off of, but the original is just better. Just writing about them makes me want to leave work and go buy some.
@cinoclav Yes!!! We have an Amish food store about 40 miles from our house. Everything is wonderful but the cart with hot fresh pretzels and Yum!!! Doughnuts! holds pure deliciousness that cannot be described.
@cinoclav There is an Amish market about 15 minutes from where I work. The first booth as you walked in the door was where the pretzels were sold. There was no way I could just walk past it.
@cinoclav Ben’s Pretzels (http://www.benspretzels.com) has a location in my local Wal-Mart (because Indiana, that’s why). They’re okay, but a little too sweet for my taste - which I guess I could say about most Amish baking. They also make their employees say “have a pretzel day,” which annoys the hell out of me.
@cf1 Can’t imagine that many Amish made their way down into Maryland. You got lucky! I was wondering as the one I go to (in West Chester, PA) has their pretzel stand just inside the door too.
@cinoclav I think there used to be a lot more Amish around but there are still a few pockets in the more rural eastern part of the state. I think the market moved a few years ago. It is pretty nice but there is not enough parking which makes it pretty difficult to just drop in.
I have a recipe for “Pretzels On Crack” which I would share should anyone request. Similar to Dot’s Pretzels from North Dakota (a company which Shaquille O’Neil bought in to when he visited Fargo a few months ago after trying some of their wares) just not as oily and much more flavor. They are INSANE if I may say so myself (…and I believe I just did) and pretty dang easy to make.
@Fuzzalini Walmart sells a similar pretzel under their Great Value brand. Just happened to pick up a bag last night. Can’t beat them for around a dollar.
We’ve got an Amish market around the corner. I hacked their system and learned how to make my own. I wrote a blog post and then fell off the internet. It may or may not help you. http://foodthehardway.blogspot.com/
@capnjb saved for later. I made Alton’s pretzels once. The first day I was so frustrated with the dough because it kept snapping back. I couldn’t get it to keep shape. Threw half the dough into the fridge and tried again the next day. Then they were delicious and fluffy. I guess I didn’t let it rest enough or something.
yes
Get pretzel sticks and dip them yourself in peanut butter and Nutella.
@lljk The city said I’m not allowed to dip myself in peanut butter and nutella again.
Philadelphia with mustard
@readnj really makes the best pretzels! Every time I go to New Jersey I have to stop in there to get them!

@mollama @readnj
I moved from Philly area decades ago, but still crave a Philly street cart Pretzel with plenty of yellow mustard !![P][1]:

Fortunately, it appears Philly Pretzel Factory is opening 25 stores in Manhattan over the next few years, so I might not have to be left craving a proper pretzel in my new home for too much longer.
@readnj especially with mustard and cayenne pepper

One wrapped around a hotdog
The answer “yes, please” is missing.
@hchavers I want to eat allll the pretzels
/youtube can’t hug every cat
But not at a burger bun. Whose idea was that, anyway? I hope that fad is over.
@craigthom
Is that a thing? This piques my morning curiosity.
@DVDBZN most pretzel buns don’t really taste like pretzels. A real letdown.
/image pretzel bun burger
@DVDBZN @RiotDemon They are very chewy, at least the one I had. I didn’t have a second.
@RiotDemon
And here I thought they used an actual pretzel(s) as buns. Really disappointing.
@craigthom What about pretzel pizza crust?
@JoetatoChip RIP pizza hut pretzel crust.
Sharp Cheddar Rold Gold minis. Close second: every other pretzel. Pretzels, yum!
Yuck. Every single one of those is or sounds disgusting to me. Maybe the stick or mini in small doses but they are way way way too salty for starters.
@Kidsandliz Would you say those pretzels are making you thirsty?
@Kidsandliz Here is the fix for your salty problem - [B&T] [1]:
@Zebra Sorry not for me. In my opinion beer tastes terrible. Don’t drink it.
@Kidsandliz @Zebra I’m so sorry to hear this. This is a terrible shame. It’s all my fault, isn’t it? I need a beer…
@shahnm Yes your fault. You get to drink only a warm beer as a punishment.
@Kidsandliz @Zebra Beer is too wonderful. I am not sure what my life would be like without IPA’s…
/giphy beer is love
as a kid…bought outside of Shea Stadium in Queens,NY. The were warmed up on a small Charcoal Grill.
@somf69 I used to get those too. I parked in that lot by Shea to take the train to work for a time… good times.

https://www.snydersofhanover.com/products/pretzel-pieces.html I don’t see garlic butter.

@cf1 Where are you from/work?
@tngrannyd Seriously - what the hell do they do to their doughnuts that make them so insanely good? That’s the other stand I always stop at.

@tohar1 I would love to have a good pretzel recipe if you could share it…
@tohar1 Yes please.
@tohar1 yes please
Voted stadium style, but really meant German style.
Soft pretzel dipped in spicy cheese.
Mr Salty very thin sticks. The favorite pretzel of my childhood
@Fuzzalini Walmart sells a similar pretzel under their Great Value brand. Just happened to pick up a bag last night. Can’t beat them for around a dollar.
Acquire bag of small pretzel knots or …whatever they call the grid shaped ones, bag of Rolos, and dipping chocolate
Smush a room temperature Rolo onto each pretzel
Dip in chocolate, let set
Cram into face
@AlexBeefgnaw Or uh, you could just go buy a bag of Snappers.
@AlexBeefgnaw @cinoclav i ripped my crown off with those.
@cinoclav Don’t think I’ve ever seen those in this market.
@AlexBeefgnaw https://snapperssnack.com/find/ or order them online!
/image pretzel dog
Stuffed with peanut butter, dammit.
Gus’ Pretzels in STL. Amirite?
@Wimateeka One of the things I miss most about St. Louis from when I worked in Soulard… Pretzel dogs for lunch!
@Wimateeka Ha, I came in here to say this. Nice to see someone else got there first.
@Wimateeka love Gus! His pretzels, nughets or italian sausage pretzel dogs…it is all good!!

Hot soft pretzels are good thing, but for keep around the house munchies:
or
@blaineg Or better yet:
We’ve got an Amish market around the corner. I hacked their system and learned how to make my own. I wrote a blog post and then fell off the internet. It may or may not help you. http://foodthehardway.blogspot.com/

@capnjb @RiotDemon That’s why so many people hate gluten; it relaxes on its own schedule.
OK, maybe that’s not the reason. Maybe it’s because they read something on the Internet.
@capnjb @craigthom @RiotDemon
/youtube tom waits free the glutens
@capnjb I made a half batch of these yesterday. They came out surprisingly well even though I made a couple of mistakes. The recipe is great – Thanks!
@cf1 Glad they turned out well. I think the secret is pretty much anything dunked in butter is better
@capnjb That is so true. I actually dipped them twice. : )
As the man at the RenFaire calls out carrying his tree of fresh baked soft prezels:
“Beer sponges! Get your beer sponges here!”
Why can’t I buy little soft pretzels in a bag? I don’t always want hard pretzels.
This really hurts because in MN or WI they have no concept of good soft pretzels (or bagels)! It’s all just formed Wonderbread.
