Depends on what type of burger and the fixings going on it. Basic burger with lettuce and tomato then cheddar or American. Avocado bacon burger then provolone or mozzarella. BBQ sauce basted burger then pepper jack or muenster.
@harveydanger government cheese is actually awesome! I discovered Tillamook cheese recently on sale at WalMart. And now believe it is secretly government cheese reincarnated – or at least the taste of gov’t cheese I remember from my childhood. My son is hooked!
It depends on the burger. But my go to is Colby jack. Crumbly blue if it’s got anything hot on it, or bacon. Shredded cheddar if it’s got an egg and/or hash browns. Swiss for mushrooms. A melted queso Blanco if it’s got salsa on it. And so on and so forth
@AZnatural1 Aldi has 8oz bricks for $3.50 ish and it’s good. They have at least 3 flavors but I only buy the plain and the jalapeno. Not sure if the other(s) is(are) dill or caraway, I just know it’s a flavor I hate
@AZnatural1@j2 Aldi had an herbed gouda in the cheese Advent calendar that I keep hoping they bring back as a regular item. We had some on burgers and it was awesome.
I don’t think there is a wrong answer. Except maybe cottage. A cottage cheese burger sounds gross, right @mitchhedberg? There is a place near me that has a ‘burger madness’ night with unlimited toppings. Under the cheese section it says ‘kindly limit cheese selections to 6’. Ha! They were having enough people order more than 6 cheeses that it made it onto the menu.
The question never came up since I grilled rib eye steak for 4th of July dinner instead of burgers (for just my youngest daughter, wife and me - older kids are all elsewhere). MMM - medium rare and smokey from the Traeger wood pellet grill - perfect!
Cheddar is better.
@DoctorOW not better than swiss.
/image Boursin
@tinamarie1974 that stiff
@kittykat9180 it is addictive…now I wish I grabbed some for Sat…oh well
@tinamarie1974 I love boursin, but on a burger? Never tried that… I’m skeptical but can see how it might work.
@OnionSoup @tinamarie1974 yes, try it!
@bpsmyth @OnionSoup @tinamarie1974 but not alone. You may need someone to perform the heimlich. That or up your mastication 3x fold.
@bpsmyth @njfan @OnionSoup I was sceptical the first time I tried it. A local restaurant had it on the menu. I wss instantly hooked.
The kind with bacon
yes
Pepper jack
@cinoclav is correct, you philistines
Muenster cheese
@edguyver14 Muenster or Swiss
@bgammill @edguyver14 Swiss is only acceptable for a mushroom and Swiss burger.
@edguyver14 this would be my vote for a burger… Not my fave overall cheese but perfect for a burger.
@bgammill @edguyver14 @simplersimon why would you eat a burger w/o mushrooms?
Smoked gouda or smoked cheddar
Depends on what type of burger and the fixings going on it. Basic burger with lettuce and tomato then cheddar or American. Avocado bacon burger then provolone or mozzarella. BBQ sauce basted burger then pepper jack or muenster.
@carwinew why would someone ruin a burger by putting avocado or bbq sauce on it?
@njfan same people that would put a half cooked chicken egg on a burger. Gooey egg yolk? Hard pass!
grated combo cheeses- colby/jack, cheddar/mozz, etc- no burnt corners and it keeps the bacon bits on the burger.
Swiss. Especially with mushrooms.
@rpg714 I agree 100%… I couldn’t understand why no one else was saying SWISS!!!
@dfwhoser @rpg714 Yes! This is my favorite!
@rpg714 I always get Swiss at Fuddruckers. I guess, I used to, so sad they went under.
Pepperjack
@shrnack74 second the pepper jack
@shrnack74 I said this up above! Definitely my favorite.
Great suggestions for burgers! Any suggestions for hotdogs?
@hchavers
New York System Weiner
@cranky1950 @hchavers A fellow Rhode Islander?
@harveydanger @hchavers yep
@hchavers I think any cheese would do as long as you scrape it all off before eating it.
Ketchup and relish only!
@hchavers dill pickles and tomato. Chili, mustard, and a little ketchup.
Government cheese
@harveydanger government cheese is actually awesome! I discovered Tillamook cheese recently on sale at WalMart. And now believe it is secretly government cheese reincarnated – or at least the taste of gov’t cheese I remember from my childhood. My son is hooked!
PANS! GLANDS! CRAYONS! AWESOME!
Juicy Lucy.
@G1 I am pretty sure juicy lucy isn’t a cheese.
If I want it melty then American but if I want more flavor to it then a sharp cheddar
Kinda partial to Havarti with Caraway seeds. Best tasting cheese…so far. Found it tucked away in the expensive cheese aisle but it was a mere 6 bucks.

FOOLS! TOOLS! JEWELS! AWESOME!

@bpsmyth I like that you said there isn’t a wrong answer and then immediately followed it up by saying cottage cheese sounds gross.
@bpsmyth cottage cheese is a misnomer
Havarti super smooth and creamy
It really depends on the seasoning of the burger. Everyday beef burger I like smoked Gouda. Lamb burgers, feta. Asian flavors, none.
Pepper Jack
White American, none of the Orange Crap!
@Oldelvis #nocontext this statement seems dangerously close to getting some thread poopers riled
@djslack Meh…
No cheese at all. Happy 4th of July everyone.
Gouda is the best cheese for basically everything
@Hrairoo I agree! Gouda and avocado on a burger - yum!
@Hrairoo Gouda is good-aaahhhhh
The question never came up since I grilled rib eye steak for 4th of July dinner instead of burgers (for just my youngest daughter, wife and me - older kids are all elsewhere). MMM - medium rare and smokey from the Traeger wood pellet grill - perfect!
Smoked Gouda
