No, I have aphantasia, so no seeing… But I had been thinking for the last two days that it’s been a while since the last mehrathon and I was ready to hit buy at midnight if an Irk sprang up on my screen… Even though I knew the likelihood of it low, especially as an opener.
@jouest it’s weird I can’t “imagine” being any other way and was well into adulthood before I realized things like “visit your happy place” and “counting sheep” were things people could actually do, and not just cutesy phrases. Certain pointless phrases suddenly made more sense. .
@jouest@OnionSoup It baffles me, too - so do you also have “face blindness?” I found it fascinating that an artist who paints super-detailed, ultra-realistic portraits is actually face blind. (Chuck Close .)
@jouest@Kyeh I am actually really bad at recognizing faces. I’m not true face blind though as I can recognize faces I see a lot… Or really famous people. But if I see someone out of context (coworker I barely know at the grocery store) there’s a good chance I won’t recognize them… Or when an actor changes wigs or someone I don’t see often has a haircut.
I looked up online once if the two are linked and what I read said no. But every aphantasiac I’ve met has said they had poor facial recognition too.
That said, even though I have no internal imaging, I could describe what certain people look like. I could tell you the eye colour of everyone in my family, shape of nose, ears, etc. I don’t have to see a picture of them in my head to say.
@jouest@Kyeh some people with athentasia “see” dreams but I don’t… I think I did when I was a child, but I’m honestly not sure. The reason I say that is, I remember as a child when I used to read a lot being in that state in between wakefulness and sleep thinking I was still reading and reaching to turn a page and realizing I was not reading anymore and it was in my head that I was reading… Kind of sleep like. I’m actually not 100% sure if I saw images or just thought I was reading, it was so long since that happened and didn’t even know at the time “seeing things in your head” was a thing. So I might have seen dreams when I was small.
@jouest@Kyeh no… I had no idea people were different to me until I was in my mid 30s. I thought everyone thought like I did. I did well in school almost all As. People with aphantasiac actually tend to do above average in academics… Doesn’t impact learning, and might actually be a hidden benefit for some subjects. Probably a huge disadvantage for arts. Anecdotally I have zero art skills.
Yes.
There was an email 15 minutes before it started.
@FreePasta True but before that, definitely not.
@FreePasta @sammydog01 It was in yesterday’s e-mail with the Vornado fan.
@FreePasta that’s just so you can get a running start
/giphy nope
Yes. Did not see the email. I’m psychic. Or is it psychotic? Whatever.
@heartny Or both.
@heartny Physic
Yarp…was just thinking earlier today… maybe I need help…
@PHRoG you are in tune with the universe
Nope. Wasn’t watching, so saw nothing.
Irk said tomorrow, so yeah.
@djslack I need to read those things.
I didn’t get the email. I pretty much never get the emails. I’m subscribed and they aren’t going to my spam folder, so who knows.
@Pony maybe the real marketing emails were the friends you made along the way
/showme did not see it coming
Yes, because I’m waiting for a new debit card.
@zhicks1987
Yeah, Irk gave it away …

Did I see it coming?

@OnionSoup That’s my every day at midnight but I didn’t actually expect it. And thanks for the new medical term, it’s fascinating.
@OnionSoup
aphantasia
Ironically, I can’t picture how this would work…

@jouest @OnionSoup So interesting. What about your dreams - are there visual images in them, or is it only the other senses you experience?

@jouest @OnionSoup Was it ever a problem for you, like in school?
@jouest @Kyeh no… I had no idea people were different to me until I was in my mid 30s. I thought everyone thought like I did. I did well in school almost all As. People with aphantasiac actually tend to do above average in academics… Doesn’t impact learning, and might actually be a hidden benefit for some subjects. Probably a huge disadvantage for arts. @jouest @OnionSoup Good in STEM subjects?
@Kyeh yes, a lot of us are clustered in careers like engineering, sciences and IT.
Not so much saw as smelled.
@macromeh a rare talent
@jouest @macromeh Or synesthesia.
