We LOVE Irk video’s. We’ve watched the “Maybe It Bothers Me More Than It Should” video’s a ton of times.
Consult a clock… bwahahaha
The R2D2 sound… boopboopbeebeeboop
Hey Google knows I watched the video. You guys post a lot of new content all the time. I’m surprised it hasn’t gotten caught up in the YouTube promotion algorithm yet.
Oh, the number of times we listened to “Something went terribly wrong” or “Fridy”… The number of times we watched “Where from are you”… I think Meh secretly pays to YouTube to scroll the number of views back to mess with the Mehicans, that’s the only logical conclusion.
@serpent exactly! The 404 page song alone should have 100 on my part and I only found out about this site two weeks ago. These numbers just don’t add up.
I mean. I’m not going to post them in my “soc” feeds or channels or whatever. I don’t even use those things and if I knew what they were I’d bet if think they are gross.
I did direct a few coworkers to the meh 404 error today after telling them it was going to be my new ring tone for them. But that’s more for me. If my cell gets called. Which happens a good bit. At 2AM something has gone terribly wrong. It’s helpful to know that right off the bat.
That was a pretty good Flounce, Irk! We may be afraid that some other song will drive ‘Something went terribly wrong’ out of its permanent parking space in our minds, and that’s why we’re cautious about watching.
@matthew when you switched to not doing 1 vid per day, did the average daily view count for the featured video decrease? I imagine it woiuld.
I probably wouldn’t watch the same video two days in a row, but I probably would watch 2 different videos in a row. So you used to get at least 2 views from me in 2 days while now you may only get 1 view in 2 days.
Thoughts?
Edit: I guess it depends if you want higher individual video views or higher combined views.
@matthew I’ll say I have on average watched the videos less now that they aren’t different every day. Some of them we don’t like… Which is a bit unfortunate. We love Irk though. Unfortunately now that the videos don’t change every day and some of them are re-runs… I tend to ignore the video applet until I see Irk’s face… Or I glance to see if it looks different/interesting/new/ has my or my family’s name with it… (apparently we’ve been (mentioned) in a few…)
@sohmageek The re-runs are pretty much the worst. Especially now that the titles don’t have “FTV” on them to warn me. Seems like trickery to make me watch an old video again since I may not remember the title of a video I’ve seen before. The other day I missed a video until I saw a post by mehcus about it. I have no idea of know when there is a new video to watch, so I don’t know when to check. The result is sometimes I don’t check. If they did the same thing with the meh button ( 2-day buttons and reused some I’ve clicked before and didn’t require a new click). I would have missed a bunch by now.
@katylava There was a time this site was against unnecessary email. Boy, those were the days. Then they caved and started sending order confirmations and newsletters…not to mention the twitter stuff. Now you’re telling me to sign up for another site and subscribe to their emails? Pffft. I’d just wish I could type the 3-letter web address and know I’m seeing a fresh deal, write-up, and video every day. Perhaps the daily deal site concept really is dead without embracing the suck that is social media?
Remember the kickstarter claims?
Every day, we’ll shove a brutally frank product review up your face, salesmanship be damned. We’ll screen a new video that, at least, won’t waste any more of your time than any other video of the same length…
We’ll do stuff on our website and that’s it. Here’s our marketing plan: we have a three-letter domain. Just type it in. Facebook? Screw that. Twitter? Nuh uh. Vine, Pinterest, Instagram, Tumblr, Hulu commercials…? Not a chance.
And we won’t send any marketing email, either. No newsletters. No daily campaigns. …
We think your social life should remain social, not another way for companies to blare ad bullshit at you. People who want to see what we’re doing can come see what we’re doing. It’ll be on the Internet!
Edit: Seriously, though. It’s a great site ran by great people. Keep up the good work. #don’tbanmebro
you could subscribe to the youtube channel and turn on notifications
for it.
I’ve done that but I don’t think the channel gets priority. I think you guys are relegated to a slow lane or lower tier. I’m guessing if you had more subscribers, you’d get higher priority.
@katylava People who manage to do Inbox Zero are utterly amazing to me- I’ve probably got 14k inbox, and then possibly a couple hundred tabs in this window.
If those (low) numbers represent engagement on the site, I don’t think that’s a bad thing. 1-2K highly-engaged, potential purchasers? Most sites would kill for that.
Weird bit of trivia: one video that has had incredible staying power is a product test for something that we sold only once. It still gets like 700 - 1000 views a month from I guess people randomly searching for reviews.
@Moose The unsolicited gifs just get randomly emailed to me and the mystery sender assures me they don’t infringe on any copy writes nor intellectual property… I know nothing about the actual creation of the gifs.
@medz Watching it on a different browser on my phone instead of my desktop didn’t help, although I may have already watched there too. The rest is too much work. Sorry Irk.
@DrunkCat I didn’t want to say anything and hurt the talent’s feelings, but I noticed it too. I’m ok with crappy audio if it means more new videos, though.
Yeah, bad levels. Mic was TOO HOT. As a one-person vid team, it’s hard to monitor the audio live. For about three seconds after recording this, I considered reshooting. Then I remembered the name of the site.
I think the main thing is that you don’t get views from the embed player. Like, most people just watch it on the meh.com homepage if they even watch it at all.
Hmm. There haven’t been any new video series in a long while, so maybe that’s part of the issue. They won’t all take off no matter how good they are (RIP Showbiz Corner sigh) but at least some new stuff would train people to pay attention to the videos again. Think of the TV business model, where each season networks put up a dozen or so shows in the hope that just a few of them are hits. It isn’t perfect and there’s always a bad call or two, but at least we aren’t watching Laverne & Shirley Season 47.
May I just take a moment to remind people of the awesomeness that is Hyram? And my all-time favorite, Donny Dempster? I just wish multiple views counted, I could send the numbers through the roof on my own.
(Behind-the-scenes videos were fascinating, as well).
Another note: Like some radio stations play the same song every Friday at 5:00, I suggest a new meh tradition - post “It’s Fridy” every Friday. It’s a great way to start the weekend.
(Some will protest, but not everyone values tradition).
@KDemo I largely stopped watching the videos once they were no longer daily. Before, it was a routine… now it’s… almost a chore, to figure out if I should or should not watch it. I think a regular schedule would be beneficial.
I can say that the location of the daily video on the mobile homepage is crap. I’m not sure where it should go that would be better, though.
I have posted them into my soc med feeds. Friends have adopted “You wouldn’t pull this shit if I was Batman!” as a running joke. I’ve used some of the catchy tunes as a way to draw people I know to the site.
Unfortunately, making a catchy, perfectly funny and twisted video every damned day is hard. It’s especially hard when you’re playing to such a weirdly mixed audience. So, I’m guessing it’s not going to just get better.
What ever happened to the user-suggestions from a while back? Any of those get traction as a possible series? Where’s Stinky Pinky? Donnie Dempster? Komedy Kornhole? The other puppet dude? There were a bunch of characters/videos that started to get a bit of traction and just disappeared. What can we do to help?
Sorry Irk, guess it was a bit of an assholish question, but be assured it was asked out of genuine concern.
I think we can all agree that the quality of the videos is not the issue. Sure it’s a mixed bag, but there is probably no series that is not loved by somebody here.
Promoting them on youtube probably isn’t going to help - it’s too crowded there. But maybe making more product review videos could be beneficial. They are hilarious and they get you views from random people searching for the stuff you already sold, i.e. exactly the kind of people who also might like the other crap you sell.
Lastly: yes it’s true, I could have bothered more people with your videos, but I think hammering people with videos they should watch or stuff they should read is as impolite as asking indiscreet questions. If they don’t get intrigued by the few nuggets I already sent them, they will probably not be see the light even if they get daily reminders.
How come the Possum Head series isn’t even among the most popular in the channel? People are weird.
I watch them all, even the taxidermy and worm ones. I love you, Irk.
Geeze, glad I didn’t ask…
Hey @matthew, can you please ask Irk for me how the name qwesda became cue-do-va? I can’t figure this one out.
@curtise I thought he was saying Qdoba.
Well Irk, someone is a little sensitive about the amount of attention they are getting. I think maybe it bothers you a little bit more than it should!
We LOVE Irk video’s. We’ve watched the “Maybe It Bothers Me More Than It Should” video’s a ton of times.
Consult a clock… bwahahaha
The R2D2 sound… boopboopbeebeeboop
Irk, maybe you need a big-time Hollywood manager and publicist?
/giphy hollywood
Hey Google knows I watched the video. You guys post a lot of new content all the time. I’m surprised it hasn’t gotten caught up in the YouTube promotion algorithm yet.
@Kevin Maybe not that surprising. The videos are unlisted. I don’t know if google does promotion based on unlisted videos.
They are typically unlisted at launch, but public shortly thereafter
@matthew ah, I think I may have found one problem…
https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/141808?hl=en
We’re all engaged here, and not on youtube. They must really weight that point when deciding to promote your channel.
@Kevin I’ve always been under the impression that Google hated embedded videos. Less ads and engagement than on the Youtube.com platform.
Oh, the number of times we listened to “Something went terribly wrong” or “Fridy”… The number of times we watched “Where from are you”… I think Meh secretly pays to YouTube to scroll the number of views back to mess with the Mehicans, that’s the only logical conclusion.

Something is afoot …
@qwesda twelve inches are afoot!

But… More irk. More views.
Irk, Mr Soc Med, can I follow you on Twitter? Username?
So much love for Irk (and even Glen). I’d be devastated if they disappeared due to lack of viewership.
IRK SO ANGRY.
@ACraigL IRK SMASH!
/giphy u mad bro?
@gregormehndel BTW, I watch every video posted on Meh…except the ones “playing dumb language games with pop songs.”
That was a pretty good Flounce, Irk! We may be afraid that some other song will drive ‘Something went terribly wrong’ out of its permanent parking space in our minds, and that’s why we’re cautious about watching.
@OldCatLady That’s my phone alarm setting so I don’t think it’s likely.
@matthew when you switched to not doing 1 vid per day, did the average daily view count for the featured video decrease? I imagine it woiuld.

@medz another consideration in the math: if you visit the site daily, you are (awesome, but) not typical.
@matthew I’ll say I have on average watched the videos less now that they aren’t different every day. Some of them we don’t like… Which is a bit unfortunate. We love Irk though. @matthew YOU’RE not typical, man!!!
@medz you could subscribe to the youtube channel and turn on notifications for it.

@medz ah, i get mobile-only notifications. i hate useless email with such a passion. @harrison makes fun of my inbox zero.
@katylava I’m just impressed that you haven’t given up on it yet.
@harrison after successfully keeping it that way for… idk… like 5 years… why would i?
@katylava
I’ve done that but I don’t think the channel gets priority. I think you guys are relegated to a slow lane or lower tier. I’m guessing if you had more subscribers, you’d get higher priority.

Some ingredients are best if they don’t draw attention to themselves. Do you really want this site to taste like bay leaves? Do you?

@Moose could be from some people viewing it over and over to make gifs out of @harrison’s face…
@Moose I just bumped the watch count up by one. +
@medz …do you make your gifs by drawing them pixel-by-pixel using the youtube video only as reference material?
@Moose The unsolicited gifs just get randomly emailed to me and the mystery sender assures me they don’t infringe on any copy writes nor intellectual property… I know nothing about the actual creation of the gifs.
@ACraigL How come I just watched it three times and the views didn’t rise? Don’t I count?
@sammydog01 Uniques only. Just like you.
@sammydog01 Clear yo’ cookies, use different browsers, use different devices, use a proxy server or different IP address
See if that helps
@medz Watching it on a different browser on my phone instead of my desktop didn’t help, although I may have already watched there too. The rest is too much work. Sorry Irk.
@ACraigL Thanks?
Why is the audio so horrendous? Did someone lose the dead cat?
@DrunkCat I didn’t want to say anything and hurt the talent’s feelings, but I noticed it too. I’m ok with crappy audio if it means more new videos, though.
@meds The only feelings I’d be afraid to hurt is Tiny Tub Mummy.
Yeah, bad levels. Mic was TOO HOT. As a one-person vid team, it’s hard to monitor the audio live. For about three seconds after recording this, I considered reshooting. Then I remembered the name of the site.
P.S. if you really have a line on a dead cat, let us know – planning PHC series 4
@matthew
How many dead cats do you need? And any preferred species?
@matthew I almost missed what you did there.
/giphy I see what you did there

@KDemo Thanks for, once again, getting that Donny Dempster song stuck in my head. Love that video.

Hey, five videos in five days! OK a bunch are repeats but still, thanks. Something to look forward to at midnight.
