I’m actually a big fan of partially incorporating a sortition/lottocracy into our Democracy. This is political but not partisan so hope it is allowed here:
When you think of ancient Greek democracies, they actually did incorporate lottocracy into their political system. I don’t know that it works for something like a President, but I would be all for it for say, the house of representatives.
It would be the most accurate way to get a representative cross-section of the population… yes, that means some nutters, because our population includes some nutters and it wouldn’t be a true representation without them. Overall, it should balance out though. Currently our representatives are all wealthy because it takes being rich to be able to run for national office. It would be a true representation of race, religion, etc.
Someone chose by lotto would most likely not be a career politician and would have direct links to real-life living.
It makes it harder for lobby’s to buy the candidate, because they can’t do it through fund-raisers (as they don’t campaign), especially if we ruled out those serving from lotto from holding future office. Neutering the lobbyists.
They don’t have to be part of the two main parties. Our current system is flawed in that if you think outside the two-party box, you’re not represented. People have to tow the party line to get nominated which suppresses ideas.
House would focus on legislation rather than getting re-elected. Right now, most politicians spend more time campaigning for re-election than they do working.
Naturally, noone would be forced into office, you would check a box when getting your voter registration card “yes I want to be included in lottocracy” or “no I don’t want to be included”.
I don’t think President should be up for sortition, and I think maintaining an elected Senate as a balance on the chance you do get a rogue house of representatives with too many nutters.
Obviously never going to happen, but I do think it would be better.
It could be worse, but statistically would typically be better.
Couldn’t be any worse than who we have now.
Loveit, but “they” (aka the 1%) would find a way to corrupt this too. They want to keep der monies.

@OnionSoup too many nutters sounds delicious, but the reality is probably less so
