@irishbyblood You have weird thoughts about MY BOYFRIEND, Irk. So no - no 3-ways, no making out, no asking for his DNA, no swingers clubs, key parties, open relationships, and no more asking Irk creepy, innuendo-laden questions.
@pepsiwine OK I concede. Irk and me, well, we're really more like bros anyway. All I ask in return is to market your inevitable sex tape with Irk. With my marketing skills and knowledge of post-production and your interplanetary sex romp escapades and the public's inherent need to know about kinky sex lives we'll all be on easy, I mean sleazy street. You in? Irk said it doesn't really matter but I should ask first.
@JonT I'm probably just a little on the not quite right side, but I do love this little guy. He's got spunk and attitude and a certain level of presumptuousness that entertains me. I've howled watching his little Irk-rants. Thanks for doing them. Sadly, sometimes the highlight of my day.
@WilhelmScreamer, still, by far, my favorite of the ST series. Started slow, but kept getting better, and better, and better! Almost all of the actors grew as actors along the way as well.
@medz Ummm, he was head of something or another. I thought he was a captain, but I could be wrong. @WilhelmScreamer I don't remember her that way, but it's been awhile since I've watched all of her series.
@PurplePawprints The writters of voyager had some serious conflicts on her charachter and what she should do. She often did things that would massively contradict charachter traits established in previous episodes. The actress just said "she's crazy" as justification.
@haydesigner What does that got to do with it? We're talking Star Fleet here. The naval sense, an officer who commands a man-of-war, ... later extended in meaning to "master or commander of any kind of vessel".
@medz well technically a space station is a type of ship I guess... a ship that stays in an orbit? I dunno, they just did it to stave off Babylon 5, right? :D
@haydesigner@medz I recall several cues (and explicit references) in the Original Series, Next Generation and movies to the fact that the closest analog to Starfleet is naval. I'm no expert in the military, but it makes sense to me. They do command ships, after all.
@haydesigner Well, you could argue that they have Admirals in those series (I'm pretty sure they do at least) and the only branches that use Admiral are Navy and Coast Guard which are all "ship oriented" for lack of a better phrase
@medz it's not even that straight foreward. he was given Command of DS9( to Liase and help guide the Bajorans towards joining the Federation, Bajor retained ownership of the station), Newly Promoted to Commander For that Assignment.(previously had been a Lt.Commander, and first officer on the USS Saratoga until it's destruction in the battle of Wolf 359, and afterwards during his time on the Utopia Planitia shipyards (Mars)). He Wasn't Promoted to Captain, until just before the Dominion War, and after, (but around the same time) He was given the Deifiant Class prototype ( USS Defiant) That he had previously worked on back at Utopia Planitia
I am running out of ways to express my absolute delight with this series. I love how well "acted" (I don't know what you would call this performance) it is -- especially the way Irk shows exasperation so well. I think Irk being able to convey a range of emotions despite not being able to move his facial features is totally underappreciated. I mean Nicole Kidman won an Oscar for the same thing.
@Headly I haven't received any responses to this, so I'm sorry, but I MUST INVOKE THE GOAT. @BillLehecka HOW DID YOU LET THIS MISCARRIAGE OF JUSTICE PREVAIL? I DEMAND SATISFACTION! BLOODY OR OTHERWISE.
This is a false dichotomy, in direct violation of everything at least Roddenberry's Star Trek stands for: diversity, inclusion, tolerance and everyone getting their own individual freak on, but in the loving embrace of the larger community of sentient beings. It's Kirk and Picard (though I admit that that violation is fitting, re repeated abuse of the Prime Directive).
And I am ever so sick of all of the haters trash talking Kirk/Shatner. The man is a genius and an essential part of what made Star Trek such a breakout series. The original--again, largely thanks to Shatner and Nimoy--did a hell of a fucking lot of work to make way not only for later incarnations of the franchise, but for other sci fi drama as well. Damn kids don't know shit, least of all to be grateful for the giants whose shoulders their heroes stand on.
Does the man have odd cadence? Hell yeah. And good for him. Is he a bit of a lech? Fuck yes and kudos to him for his efforts on behalf of interspecies relations.
As quaint as it can sometimes be (it is a few decades old, after all), I'd much sooner watch the original Star Trek than most of the shallow shit proffered on the plethora of media outlets these days (though, again, admitting that most of the best TV ever has been done in the last 5-10 years).
@RedHot Ah, but I never said "best." My main point is that it's a pointless comparison: the two are different, each better and worse in his own way. I find it ridiculously limiting (and, as I said, based on a fallacious premise) to choose between them, and since I don't have to I won't.
I made a stronger assertion of Kirk/Shatner's worth because I find a lot of the comments here unnecessarily and ignorantly dismissive of him.
@joelmw you did say "it's a pointless comparison: the two are different, each better and worse in his own way." which can be said about any comparison of any kind. I love them both, they did big things for the series. That answer is a cop out (like yours, unless you chose Kirk) so I'm going to choose Picard because I like watching him more. Its a fun question meant to start a fun dynamic conversation. Its an opinion, you can't be wrong. Don't be so serious :-) Pick one.
@RedHot It's what I do. I'm both far less serious and far more serious than you probably imagine. I refuse to choose there too. ;-) But you make many great points and I especially like your last comment.
@RedHot Surely I'm beating a dead horse, but part of the somewhat subconscious passion here has to do with the preponderance of unnecessary bifurcation and polarization, the over-reliance on analysis (v. synthesis et al.), the need for favorites (I've said elsewhere, I only have absolute favorites in a few areas, chief of which is my woman).
The character started in the 60's as the center of the franchise on TV and there's still wildly successful movies being made with Kirk as a focal character. Can't argue with the success.....ok anything can be argued but 49 years of relevance is pretty huge.
So one interesting thing to me was Irk ending by saying he likely won't respond since he always tries to answer questions from new people. So I guess that makes it kinda unlikely that any of my other questions will get answered since I've already had 2 done. Didn't someone else also get 2 answered? Seems like there was one more besides me in the 2-timers club.
Oh Irk. The correct answer was Picard. #fail
Let it snow - Picard WINS!
@kanzatonian The episode where he got the recorder from still fills me with dem feels..
@DarkHuD I love when Picard yells "Shut up Wesley" in the Let it Snow compilation.
don't care about star trek??????
irk, you have broken my heart
So dude...I mean Irk....which one would you make out with? Maybe a 3-way? No way?
@irishbyblood you have weird thoughts about Irk.
@irishbyblood @JonT
@irishbyblood You have weird thoughts about MY BOYFRIEND, Irk.
So no - no 3-ways, no making out, no asking for his DNA, no swingers clubs, key parties, open relationships, and no more asking Irk creepy, innuendo-laden questions.
@pepsiwine Be very careful here.......innuendo is a place to put adult toys.
@GeriatricDragon LOL - You guys and your "ass-themed" double entendres tonight. Touché.
@irishbyblood Little curious to know who party #2 in your 3 way would be.
@dashcloud I was misunderstood on this one...I thought it would be Irk, Kirk and Picard. I just wanna watch. Oh wait, I don't.
@pepsiwine But seriously. Wanna grab a Pepsi sometime?
@JonT I'm probably just a little on the not quite right side, but I do love this little guy. He's got spunk and attitude and a certain level of presumptuousness that entertains me. I've howled watching his little Irk-rants. Thanks for doing them. Sadly, sometimes the highlight of my day.
@irishbyblood I think of him as the guy who is always two women short of a threesome.
@Mehrocco_Mole Well said!
Wow
Told off by a little troll puppet
This is either a new high or a new low in my life
@WilhelmScreamer What do you expect from a troll on the internet?
What, no Benjamin Lafayette Sisko?
@haydesigner where the heck has Avery Brooks been? Haven't seen him on anything in ages.
@haydesigner DS9 is still on the to watch list
@WilhelmScreamer, still, by far, my favorite of the ST series. Started slow, but kept getting better, and better, and better! Almost all of the actors grew as actors along the way as well.
@haydesigner He's all about the base
No tribble
@nadroj Nice.
Honestly, if I had to list my faves, I think it would go like this:
......
Hmm, when I write this, the 5 is 999, but when it posts, it posts as 5. Whatever.
@PurplePawprints Was Sisko even a Captain?
@PurplePawprints Janeway was stark raving mad though. Kirk at least got the job done
@medz http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Benjamin_Sisko
@thismyusername So his rank was "captain" even though he didn't have a ship to captain? He was just the commander of the space station?
@medz, does a Captain in the Army require a ship?
@haydesigner What does that got to do with it? We're talking Star Fleet here. The naval sense, an officer who commands a man-of-war, ... later extended in meaning to "master or commander of any kind of vessel".
@medz well technically a space station is a type of ship I guess... a ship that stays in an orbit? I dunno, they just did it to stave off Babylon 5, right? :D
@thismyusername I can see it being a type of "vessel" even if it can't be manuvered. Captain he is then. Glad that's settled.
@medz, why is the naval sense? Is Starfleet the Navy? That seems like a rather arbitrary line you chose.
@haydesigner @medz I recall several cues (and explicit references) in the Original Series, Next Generation and movies to the fact that the closest analog to Starfleet is naval.
@Bingo and @joelmw speak the truth. So suck on that, @haydesigner. :)
@earlyre
just kidding, I am one too – just not of the Star Trek brand.
@JonT it's fine... I really wish i had to look most of that up... but... yeah.
@earlyre no worries, the amount of lore I could rattle off from various sources is as embarrassing, if not more.
@medz Short answer - he was a Commander the first few seasons, then got promoted to Captain about halfway thru the series.
Kirk, because he was a true Ambassador with ALL the ladies. Picard was too selective.
@somf69 Yeah, pretty sure Kirk was a space rapist that never got caught, because the UFP swept the scandals under the space-rug.
@somf69 Kirk was too selective. Ask Captain Jack Harkness.
@somf69 @DarkHuD @hamjudo Captain Jack Harkness wasn't too selective. Nor was his coat.
Straight up Capt. Badass, Picard. Awesomely awkward drunk uncle space captain, Kirk!
@Superjimtendo Good pupeteering is a really impressive feat
I actually asked Irk that question weeks before: https://meh.com/forum/topics/you-asked-for-it---ask-irk#54aacbe51a6d95ec0682ccdc
I is disappointed I guess...
@Headly maybe that bothers you more than it should? 😋
@aljopro NOTHING bothers me more than it should. It bothers me exactly the right amount.
It's all about Janeway. Don't believe the Kirk/Picard hype. But if the choice really must be one of the guys, it's Kirk any day of the week.
This isn't really a question..
Picard is the only logical answer.
How has no one yet commented on the great pronunciation of the name yet? That was excellent: Wilhelm's Creamer. Heh
@Bingo Exactly what I was about to comment on. I think that may be the only reason this question was answered, or at least approached.
@Bingo oh god I can't unhear it
@WilhelmScreamer
@WilhelmScreamer @Headly TIL http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_scream
That's kinda awesome. Thanks. :-)
BTW, If there's a stock Wilhelm's Cream (I'm assuming in the porn industry), I don't need to see that. Just FYI.
Captain Malcolm 'Mal' Reynolds or perhaps Hans Solo on a good day.
@rockblossom can't beat the Cap'n.
@rockblossom That's a cunning cap'n.
I don't know what you guys are talking about. My favorite space captain could kick your favorite space captains ass:
@MEHcus "Or die trying"
@MEHcus

Now get off my damn lawn.
@joelmw TL;DR? Kirk and Picard. And Kirk rocks, motherfuckers.
@joelmw first doesn't mean best. Picard.
@RedHot To be clear, there's a lot that I like about Picard and I would agree that he's a better captain for our time--just not necessarily overall.
@joelmw you did say "it's a pointless comparison: the two are different, each better and worse in his own way." which can be said about any comparison of any kind. This. Goofy as shit? Sure. But also brilliant and I'm unashamed to admit that I love it.
@joelmw OMG I haven't seen that in soon long! It was great!
@smilingjack This is maybe the classic, but I love almost all of his musical interpretations. :-)
@joelmw i am not afraid to admit I love that man's "musical" Carrer. I am proud to say i own a copy of (and Love)"Has Been" (http://www.amazon.com/Has-Been-William-Shatner/dp/B0002RUPH4) , his Album, with Music by Ben Folds. there is also this earlier Collaboration:
@earlyre He...is...so...bad...yet...so...good.
@smilingjack honestly, I would listen to that man read the phone book.
@earlyre @smilingjack I've listened to him read Sarah Palin. And I can't stand what she says in any other context.
@earlyre Has Been is an awesome album. And in a completely non-ironic way. I love that album.
I love TNG and Picard but Kirk wins.
The character started in the 60's as the center of the franchise on TV and there's still wildly successful movies being made with Kirk as a focal character. Can't argue with the success.....ok anything can be argued but 49 years of relevance is pretty huge.

You can't spell KIRK without IRK.
Just sayin'
K
@nadroj - Kirk is Irk as a Kickstarter backer.
So I guess Irk is with Captain getalife Kirk.
We all know the answer is Picard.
How can you not care about Star Trek?????????
@smilingjack "Irk," as his very name suggests, is always about getting under our skin with his provocations. :-)
Relevant info 1:24-1:36
the link is not working properly.
@earlyre Correct.
Kirk! Picard was a wussy!
What a better place for me to post this than a thread from years ago.
