Adjusting the Altruism Score
23I’d like my altruism score (likes / (topics + comments + replies) ) to be 3.0. It’s currently 3.4, and that means I have to create 236 topics, comments or replies. This is one.
If you’d like to know your own altruism score, check your account profile.

Why?
@RiotDemon No particular reason. I think it’s born of boredom during a pandemic and a desire to use letters other than W, A, S and D.
@RiotDemon I think this means that @eonfifty won’t be liking either of our comments, even if they really, really like them.
@eonfifty @UncleVinny sad times.
@RiotDemon @UncleVinny Not true. I have a plan for that: going old school. Why just tap a star to indicate a like when you can post a reply stating you like the post?
@eonfifty @RiotDemon It’s the personal touch I’ve come to expect from you!
@UncleVinny
@RiotDemon
@RiotDemon @UncleVinny @eonfifty And there are none of those icky “self likes” when you hard-like a topic, comment, or reply you made.
/giphy evil altruism
@f00l
I always saw the altruism score and wondered what exactly it is.
@PooltoyWolf we’re all armed with dangerous new knowledge. Fuckin’ gnostics now, that’s us!
@PooltoyWolf @UncleVinny get to starring!
@PooltoyWolf
@PooltoyWolf @UncleVinny
@PooltoyWolf @RiotDemon @UncleVinny
Or you could go unstar 236 comments you previously liked
@hammi99 I thought about that but decided posting was more constructive.
/giphy something more constructive
@hammi99
@eonfifty
Meh
@jaybird
In order to maintain my score, I’ll either have to post less or star more.
/image indecisive cat
@narfcake …or vice versa.
/giphy or vice versa
@narfcake
@eonfifty @narfcake I miss when that show was cool, and I was an angsty teen.
So what’s the point of the score, anyway - is there one?
@Kyeh just another thing to keep people interested.
Please make sure you click the meh button!
@Kyeh @RiotDemon and take advantage you can go back and click the meh button for all of today’s deals even if the deal is past likely to get us to go visit and maybe buy since everything that isn’t sold out can be bought all day. Sneaky. Like the time we had to click all over kingdom come on side deals to find an irk
@RiotDemon Well, I do, and have been, but what’s that for other than for fun? I suppose it tells the company that people are looking, but is there any other reason?
@Kidsandliz @RiotDemon Yeah, I know - only that time (Sidedeal) I was actually able to score my one and only IRK!
@Kyeh Its nothing more than a line in the sand at low tide.
@Kyeh I don’t think there is any point to it.
/giphy it is pointless

@Kyeh
@Kyeh
@rtjhnstn
@eonfifty So “like peeing your pants in a dark suit — you get a warm feeling but no one else notices”?
Also - if we give YOU stars, does your score go down? Or is it just your comments/posts that do that?
@eonfifty @Kyeh The score is stars you gave to others vs posts you made. Not sure what they’d do if you only starred and never posted.
@Kyeh Something like that, i guess
No. Your starifying only affects your own score.
@eonfifty @Kidsandliz I see. I still haven’t gotten an answer as to why @RiotDemon wants me to click on the Meh faces - is that important? Incidentally I saw that just today I went from being a “casual Meh acquaintance”
to a “hardcore Meh fiend”!? Not sure what tipped the balance - posts? Purchases? Both?
@Kidsandliz @Kyeh @RiotDemon No. It’s not important at all.
IDK. I’d guess orders and poll participation based on the profile boilerplate: “Kyeh is a hardcore meh fiend having placed 17 orders and voted in 239 polls. Kyeh clicked the meh button 671 times, 229 days in a row, with a longest streak of 229 days in a row.”
@Kidsandliz @Kyeh
/giphy division by zero
@Kyeh there isn’t really any point.
/giphy no point
I just hit altruism of 1.1 by liking everything on this thread. I’ve never been so altruistic before. I’ve always stayed at 1.0.
I feel altruistic AF right now.
@OnionSoup
@eonfifty @OnionSoup I am, apparently, (at least according to meh) pretty stingy with likes…having only liked 13,600 posts (will have to like another one so it isn’t an even number like that - all pun intended). Shows the fundamental problem with how they calculate this metric.
@Kidsandliz @OnionSoup It looks like less than 1.0 makes you stingy. What’s wrong with the metric calculation?
/giphy wrong metric calculation
@Kidsandliz
@eonfifty @Kidsandliz the only thing that could be adjusted is how it’s measured exactly. I’ve handed out over 60k likes and my altruism is only 3.7 because I post a lot. You get punished for posting. If I didn’t talk, my score would be a lot higher. You see some users that might have scores over 10 but they’ve made only a few hundred comments and I have over 15k.
@Kidsandliz @RiotDemon Maybe you can be “too altruistic.” Perhaps the ideal altruism score is somewhere above 1.0 and below some heretofore undiscovered value?
I’m guessing 3.0.
/giphy shoot for pi
@RiotDemon
@eonfifty I am definitely not too altruistic at a 3.7. I could star a lot more posts if I really felt like it.
That’s why I think it’s weird you are trying to bring your score down.
@RiotDemon
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
How altruistic do you have to be? 3.0 is good enough.
@eonfifty
/giphy you do you
@RiotDemon
So…who has the highest altruism score? And who has the lowest? Which one should we make fun of?
@eeterrific I don’t know who has the highest, but there are probably a lot of 0.0s out there.
/giphy high low fun
@eeterrific
@eeterrific i’m sitting @ 0.3
@earlyre @eeterrific I’m pretty sure @shrdlu has the highest.
@earlyre @eeterrific @RiotDemon @Shrdlu
“Shrdlu is free and easy in handing out likes to other people’s posts, having doled out 133551 (for an altruism score of 116.2).”
Wow, that’s some impressive altruism!
@earlyre @eeterrific @RiotDemon @Shrdlu I’d guess @f00l would have a high one too if she didn’t post as much as she does since she likes almost all of the posts out there. Looking at just raw numbers of likes though she is likely up there too.
@earlyre @eeterrific @f00l @Kidsandliz @Shrdlu yeah. f00l has actually doled out almost twice as many likes as Shrdlu.
What good is the altruism score?
Why …
It makes me feel so much better

than YOU
(Thanks to comedian Sarah Silverman, from whom I lifted that joke )
