@thechinglish TrackR has multiple simple flaws where as Tile has one big flaw.
The only advantage I’ve noticed is that the TrackR can have it’s battery user replaced. Because of this, TrackR is also NOT water or dust resistant while Tile is. The crowd locate is a great idea, but falls short as TrackR is not as popular as Tile. Pairing is also a bit faulty with the TrackR, as well as I’ve had delayed responses when it comes to trying to find the lost TrackR (and item).
Nice idea for keys, but that’s about it. Tile is much more popular making it a more usable item. It’s also more reliable with it’s biggest downfall being the lack of user-replaceable battery.
@thechinglish@theonlybuster@kadagan The new tile pro’s are SO much better than the old ones. Not just replaceable battery but also louder and more impact resistant. I broke all of my old tiles before the battery ever wore out.
These TrackR’s will probably fall apart or die to water damage before you ever need to replace the battery. Also only attach them to things that you want to find some of the time, not all of the time.
@andrd@PooltoyWolf@shahnm@thechinglish
I bought a multi pack for much more than $20, and while I don’t have any tiles to compare them to, the Trackrs are definitely frustrating. Batteries drain really fast, app was glitchy, they didn’t beep very loud, so I’d have to silence all noises and tell everyone to be quiet. And, biggest problem is the phone would only connect to the tags if it wanted to.
They claimed free batteries for life, but after a few replacements I now have to contact tech support before getting any. I could just buy my own, but the iffy connection makes me not want to invest more money in them. App claims that it’s draining abnormally fast, but my SO’s tag drained just as fast, and she’s stuck at the tech support notice too.
Granted, it might work better if I had Bluetooth always on, but that ain’t gonna happen.
@andrd@Narwalt@shahnm@thechinglish Well that sucks. I’d say this is a classic case of ‘you get what you pay for’, but it sounds like you got even less than that.
i bought a bunch of these a couple years ago (earlier models). they’re good, but you have to replace the batteries regularly or they are worthless. i paid a lot more than this.
@Yoda_Daenerys Thanks for this review, my favorite kind, where I can take the opposite conclusion from the writer’s opinion. You say they’re good, but you also say that I would hate them.
(The batteries would have to last at least 2 years for me to not hate the product, and I assume “regularly” means more frequent than that.)
It would send you a single battery completely free, through the app, but my was that after a few batteries, maybe 2-3, it tells you that “something’s not quite right” and directs toy to contact support.
Same thing happened to my SO’s Trackr.
It sends you to a payment page, but applies a coupon that makes a single one completely free.
Hey… is TrackR owned by (edit: a partner of) Mediocre? I can’t help but notice that they are powered by Checkout.org and have footer links to many of the other properties…
TrackR supports a feature called “Crowd Locate” which sounds an awful lot like the iOS 13 feature announced recently (no conspiracy here, just pointing out this feature). Interestingly, TrackR rebranded to a new company called Adero, which offers similar products, but seems to be missing any mention of “Crowd Locate” or similar technology.
With tinfoil hat firmly in place- did Adero want to offload the remaining inventory, retail channel and brand or whatever, which @snapster seized upon, shoveling their mediocre also ran Tile upon the crazed crowds of tepid deal denizens of this very site? IS TRACKR ACTUALLY MEDIOCR? AND WHO IS PEPE SILVIA?
I’m actually thinking about buying one of these, just for giggles.
@hanzov69@snapster if you read some of the amazon reviews she left a tile at Disney World 2 years ago and is till getting hits on her crowd tracker so it works
@hanzov69 this neither proves nor disproves anything, but:
TrackR, Inc. (“TrackR”), located in Santa Barbara, California, USA, warrants to the owner of the enclosed product…
I believe there are many entities that are powered by checkout.org but are not Mediocre-related. I don’t know if they feature links to sister properties or not, though.
Edit: maybe I’m wrong. Googling for the phrase “powered by checkout.org” does not lead to much of value outside of morningsave.
@djslack Yeah, I’ve been trying to figure out a good/free way to look for backlinks to checkout.org. All I can say is that my attempts at finding other checkout.org sites have yielded only known mediocre properties and TrackR. But, I’m only a green belt in google-fu
@mellowirishgent I have a TrackR and 2 years sounds quite extreme, especially since the battery in ALL of my units didn’t last for one full year, let alone 2.
Though I will say after testing these things out in NYC as well as SFLA, they aren’t very popular, so Crowd Locate is lacking. I did noticed I was getting a couple hits per day. I will say that the range tends to become a bit lacking once the battery drops below a 50% charge.
@Woody1 Actually- that’s probably inaccurate. These are specifically called out as Bluetooth 4, which includes a “Low Energy” (LE) specification. Going back as far as iOS 6, 10 LE devices was considered a “reasonable” number.
So, pure speculation here, it seems like any modern device will have no issue keeping tabs on 8+ of these thangs.
I’ve read about 40 reviews on Amazon majority of them said this product is good the batteries run about $0.10 each I already downloaded the app it looks decent at about 2 bucks each with adhesive and rings and batteries included this is a price range that works for me if it finds my phone car keys or my remote control once it’s worth it to me thank you team meh for a fantastic Deep Discount well done!!!
@mellowirishgent I bought a 10 pack on morningside for same price a while back and use them for those items you mentioned as I’m always loosing my remotes, keys and even my wallet.
One feature I like is you can set a specific tracker to alert you if you get too far away from whatever you were tracking and it came in handy as I set my wallet down in the counter at the store and walked away but it alerted me once I got a certain distance to where it disconnected from my phone my phone started going off telling me I left the tracker with my wallet behind.
I figure they probably will be slightly more reliable that my Keysmart organizer w/Tile I bought on here a while back… Given how infrequently I’m inclined to think about recharging it. I’ve (probably) spent $20 on worse things…
@Kidsandliz If my theory is correct and meh now controls the worlds supply of TrackR Pixels… they should start including one in every IRK. For reasons.
When every mediocre person has the app and at least a half dozen of these doodads, we’ll all know immediately where every wayward bag of texas air is.
Paid $29 for a 5-pack on Morningsave in April. Shipped directly to my daughter. Called her for a review. She hasn’t used them yet. But, she just installed a light-strip thingy that I sent her (purchased here) over a year ago; Raved about it being “life changing” and “awesome”. Hope she uses the TrackR coins with grandson’s, ages 2 & 4 before one of 'em “sprints off into a crowd” again. $20 for an 8-pack is coming my way! I’ll find creative uses for them.
Will this work for tracking my pet?
We strongly discourage the use of TrackR on cars, pets or people. TrackR uses Bluetooth technology to connect your items to the TrackR app on your phone and does not use live GPS technology. Once the TrackR is outside of Bluetooth range of a user’s phone, the TrackR app will show the Last Seen location of the TrackR. This is the last location where the TrackR and TrackR app were connected. The TrackR app does not track minute-by-minute movements of a pet, car, or person when it is outside of Bluetooth range.
@2many2no If you’re looking for a GPS for your pet I’d suggest PawScout, My little buddy is getting up in age and sometimes tends to wander and find a bush to nap in *Yes I’m aware my dog is weird *making it hard to find him so I bought PawScout they’re not expensive and they actually use GPS giving you the animals location
@2many2no@ConcealedPsycho Not weird! He just needs some me time. One of my dogs has made a dog cave in one of our big bushes. He’s happy as a pig in sloth out there, just chilling. Until the UPS man comes, then he takes a break from relaxing to get a snack since the guy brings dog bones. Around my house, it’s a dog’s life, and I’m weird for working all the time.
@2many2no@ConcealedPsycho Looking at the PawScout Web site, they are also Bluetooth, not GPS. Their site states: “Our Bluetooth-enabled Pawscout Tag uses short-range, radar-style tracking to ping nearby Pawscouters if your pet becomes lost.” I bought the TrackR’s a couple years back for my buddy that has took off in the woods a couple of times, Bluetooth is useless unless you are already close to him
Actually would have bought these despite risky reviews, but, got the Tile system about a month ago. Reasonably happy with it. So I can’t say much about this but I can tell ya about Tile:
The new model (2018) does have a replaceable battery. The older one didn’t. The “slim” or whatever they call the flatter one doesn’t either due to form factor.
It does seem to work pretty well as long as you understand what it is (bluetooth) and is not (not GPS, does not have its own WiFI, etc). So it’s not like “find my iPhone” where the device actually knows where it is and can report to you anywhere. I actually left my iPad in a shopping cart at Trader Joes, got home, and used the feature and found out it was still there, and used the “ping” to find it when I drove back 2 miles to the store. These devices won’t help you if you’re 2 miles away!
I have not tested the range but I thought bluetooth was generally 30 feet (10m actually). Of course this depends on what else is around, going through walls, etc. I would be skeptical of the “100 feet” mentioned in this product.
If you already lost the item, it won’t help you. (My 2nd set of truck keys must be in the house somewhere! I bought the Tile system a week later.)
Look for periodic deal-of-the-day from BB for $40 for 4-pack. Not as cheap as these though.
Bought some 3 or so years ago. Terrible drain on phone battery (android) and did not work well. Gave to entire family everyone stopped using pretty quickly.
Now use Tile.
@svogels1 So the tile doesn’t drain your battery? I hate my tile. It is useless, unless I leave the app running at all times on my phone it never is connected. I figured that since this was Bluetooth it may work better. Like a smart watch…
@lbrooks15 Tile app does not drain my battery, at least right now. TrackR killed phone battery quickly. Seems like it may be hit and miss with any of these trackers and possibly “buggy” apps.
I got these the last time they were for sale and I could never get them to work. They wouldn’t link up forever, then when I finally got one linked and onto my keychain, it fell apart in the first few days. I got the Tile after this and had zero problems from day one-- now I have 10 Tiles.
Oh come on guys. Sort of good comments. Sort of bad comments. Should I buy the things or not? I sent snapster $5 every month so I need to order at least one thing a month. I do lose stuff in the house.
Wow this Item has got the MEH crowd in rare form with all these comments that are all over the place, It took a while to read all the comments. Hell I live for shit like this, I’m in… ( restorative-gallant-finch ).
I got mine last week or something and have connected one.
I had no problem connecting it to the phone.
It is very quiet, so if hearing it is important to your application, this ain’t the answer.
I’ve got mine in my computer/tool bag to warn me when I walk away from it, and that works like a charm. The wifi option to keep it from alerting when I’m home also seems to work, even with my phone turning off wifi when it’s not busy.
They are just awful, I just brought them to the recycling center because of the batteries and threw them in the bin a week after purchase. Waste of my hard earned cash
Meh… they aren’t super loud, wife left her keys in a work shirt and it was in a pile of laundry. Had to turn off the fan in the room to even just barely hear the noise.
I’ve only tried using 3 of them and so far 2 of them are low on juice after a few days. Clearly these were an older batch. They apparently use CR2016 which are cheap enough in bulk on Amazon, but this was a seriously MEH purchase.
Have setup 3 so far. 2 out of 3 had good batteries out of the box. I pulled the battery out of another trackR to get the third one going.
We will see if I can reliably remember to turn off the alert when I intentionally leave something behind. I frequently misplace things in my house, so disabling alerts when in range of the home wifi is not an effective plan.
I turned off network access on my phone, and I was still able to pair it with another trackR, so it doesn’t need access to a remote server to function.
I haven’t found any alternative software googling trackR or Adero.
I want to be able to tag tools and then use my phone and a pair of Raspberry Pis to tell me if they are in the basement, the garage, near me, or lost. There is the little security issue that I don’t want all of my valuable stuff to be labeled as valuable. So I can see why the trackRs don’t advertise their location to unpaired devices. But it does mean I will have to use some other Bluetooth Beacons for my tool tracker project.
I love them. They’ve helped me many times already. I even have one on my puppy who looks so startled when I set it off. She immediately comes running back to me, jumps in my arms and stays there until I shut it off. Great training aid

How much worse are these than tile, basic functionality wise, and app feature and integration wise?
@thechinglish Soooooooo much worse…
@shahnm @thechinglish At least the batteries are user-replaceable…unless Tile has changed things since I last looked.
@PooltoyWolf @shahnm @thechinglish They’ve finally updated their models with replaceable batteries now.
@andrd @PooltoyWolf @thechinglish TBH I don’t know anything about either of those gizmos. I just instinctively dad-reacted to the “how” question…
@andrd @shahnm @thechinglish Ah! Bravo!
@thechinglish TrackR has multiple simple flaws where as Tile has one big flaw.

@Yoda_Daenerys what about this free battery business? Their website has an asterisk (but not footnote/disclaimer).
It also has a bunch of broken images due to some unparsed PHP…
https://www.thetrackr.com/battery/
And under the FAQ entry for “Battery Replacement”, it actually just says “lorem”.
https://www.thetrackr.com/trackr-faq/
All in all this is shaping up to be exactly the caliber of company I expect here.
@hanzov69 @Yoda_Daenerys Isn’t Lorem the guy that protects the trees?
@Hanky @hanzov69 @Yoda_Daenerys yeah, cause the trees have no voice.
@hanzov69 @Yoda_Daenerys so what you’re effectively saying is “meh”?
@hanzov69 @Yoda_Daenerys just pay $8.99 shipping and we will send you a free battery. Not$8.99, but you get the idea.

OK…
I guess.
Gotta get my 5$ dollar bucks worth of VMP shipping.
Perfect Meh-crap… so yeah, I’ll bite on these. So I have to keep batteries, too? Woo-hoo! Perfect Meh-crap! And they don’t work well, either? Yay!
Nasty reviews on Amazon,47% rated then 1 or 2 stars !
How do you pair to eight trackers at a time and what happens to them (connectivity) when you pair a headset to your device?
@Woody1 This might be enlightening-
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201171#multiple

@Woody1 Actually- that’s probably inaccurate. These are specifically called out as Bluetooth 4, which includes a “Low Energy” (LE) specification. Going back as far as iOS 6, 10 LE devices was considered a “reasonable” number.

@mellowirishgent The bad reviews though mostly all have similar complaints… and there are certainly a lot of negative reviews.
There. I see it! Your keyboard does have a period key after all.
@mellowirishgent I bought a 10 pack on morningside for same price a while back and use them for those items you mentioned as I’m always loosing my remotes, keys and even my wallet.

Can we glue these to humans, cats, dogs, cockroaches, our meh purchases… to track them too?
@Kidsandliz If my theory is correct and meh now controls the worlds supply of TrackR Pixels… they should start including one in every IRK. For reasons.
When every mediocre person has the app and at least a half dozen of these doodads, we’ll all know immediately where every wayward bag of texas air is.
@Kidsandliz Yes. And you can then glue all of those things together into one giant Meh-glob…
@shahnm You need a very big supply as you need to glue them to every battery in your fridge in case they make a run for it.
@Kidsandliz I was wondering the same thing, could I attach them to my dog collars
@mehbee The claim is 100’ reception. The complaints in the negative reviews indicate that might be overly optimistic.
Who in their right mind wants to find IRK?
@hchavers - You’re in the wrong place for people in their right mind.
What if I already lost the item to be tracked?
@RedOak - Attach one of these to an identical item, lose it in the same place, and - voilà!
@RedOak Not to worry. When you find it it will be in the last place you look.
@Kidsandliz @RedOak Not necessarily so. When I find something, I figure I’m on a roll, and I always check a few more places.
No, I’ve never found the whatnot again, but at least I can check a few places off the list for when I lose it next time.

@2many2no If you’re looking for a GPS for your pet I’d suggest PawScout, My little buddy is getting up in age and sometimes tends to wander and find a bush to nap in *Yes I’m aware my dog is weird *making it hard to find him so I bought PawScout they’re not expensive and they actually use GPS giving you the animals location
https://pawscout.com/
@ConcealedPsycho My little doggies just go out in the fenced yard only when they have to. They try to minimize interruption of their sleeping.
I just thought it was funny that meh was tracking Irk, which seems to be a direct violation of the FAQ.
@2many2no @ConcealedPsycho Not weird! He just needs some me time. One of my dogs has made a dog cave in one of our big bushes. He’s happy as a pig in sloth out there, just chilling. @2many2no @ConcealedPsycho Looking at the PawScout Web site, they are also Bluetooth, not GPS. @djslack The Suzuki Sidekicks
You spelled Y13LD wrong, 1D10T5!
@warpedrotors everybody knows 1 before 3 except after C, or when the more significant digit’s high like the first part of pi.
This has below 3 stars on Amazon. Meh, it is pretty disgusting that you sell things this bad.
@Dizavid So you’re in for 1?

@RobinBobcat No, he’s been a whiny ass for a long time here.

Will not sync with iPad. Attempted with iPad Pro and iPad air2. Just keeps trying. No help from company. Please help.
Great training aid
price reduction … do I get a credit???
@jep9 If they had raised the price would you be sending in more money?
This stuff is garbage …it dost really Do a good job of tracking the Chinese company that owns it doesn’t update your location for months
This stuff was absolute garbage …some Chinese company who’s trackers didn’t really work out here…I was so disappointed whit this
@tomofo see you in a few months for an update.
