Just because they’re disposable doesn’t mean they’re not reusable. My siverware drawer is full of “disposable” plastic cutlery that’s been through the dishwasher many times.
@haydesigner@MrNews hopefully they are not counterfeit. No mention of manufacturer (just the distributor and if that company is the manufacturer they are not on the CDC list of ones that passed testing) nor is there a photo of the box to look that way.
@haydesigner@Kidsandliz Good points. At that price they may be bogus; we’ll see after a thorough inspection upon arrival. Three months ago I paid $40 for ten KN95s from Monoprice- they were definitely legit, but too expensive.
Funny- several reviewers complained you look like Donald Duck in these. I don’t give a duck’s butthole what I look like- I’d look a lot worse intubated and dying…
@MrNews let me know what you think when they show up as I’d imagine, since these didn’t sell out, that they will show up again on morningsave or sidedeals.
The other thing that concerns me is the photos are of several different masks as they look different - for example one photo doesn’t have white up the sides. Many of the photos - the girls, the family… are on a number of different masks from many different (allegedly anyway) manufacturers and some of the same girls show up in the CDC list of counterfeit N-95 (and RN and PN 95’s). I hate to say it but I’d suspect these are no name made with who knows what materials with photos swiped from the internet and then (in some cases) photoshopped.
Pretty much crap masks as expected. Very first one I tried, the elastic pulled right off. Looks like they melted right through the mask when heat sealing the elastic to it. The wire across the nose bridge doesn’t hold it’s bend very well. At least they were cheap enough to give away to others.
I am not willing to buy masks online unless someone can tell me whether or not the nose piece stays bent (for those who don’t have glasses this matters with respect to fogging; matters for other reasons too). And of course in the middle of an event like this there is no time to find out.
I also look to see if ALL the photos are of the same mask. Here there are 3 different ones (I have seen as many as 4) across the photos (yes I know they didn’t take those photos), including some generic photos ones I have seen used across brands with the same models, same family… As a result I have no idea what I would be buying. I want to be able to look at how the ear piece is attached and size of the surface ares doing so.
Looking in person at every different mask I can find where the store that allows me to handle a mask - even if just through the packaging inside the box (often, but not always, what the employees use are also sold in the store) I am finding most of them are crap. Nose band is very thin and narrow (those break easily and may or may not stay bent although some thicker/wider ones don’t stay bent either) or I bend the nose piece (often through the wrapping) and it doesn’t stay put. These are the two biggest faults I have found. I look at the surface area of how the ear piece is attached. Most I have seen there has been barely any tack down or ear piece attaches on the underside and those pull off easily not to mention the mask edge gaps more then.
The majority of the masks I have been allowed to handle elsewhere in big box stores (including stores like Lowes and Home Depot) and pharmacies have been crap in one way or another (nose piece won’t stay bent, ear piece being attached with so little surface area you know there will be a problem…) or way too expensive.
The KATA ones I bought from Office Depot (they had it in store but I bought online as they don’t price match their own online prices so needed to do a pick up at store to not to be killed by shipping - they were $14.99 online, $24.99 in store) with the box I bought the straps stay attached, the nose piece stays bent and is fairly substantial BUT what they are made of is initially rather stiff. That is noticeable along the top but I found as you wear one it does soften up and doesn’t feel like it will gouge out your eyes by the top corners any more. Best of the lot I have found available locally that I can examine in a face to face store before buying.
Still hoping the kind I was using at MD Anderson will finally be sold to non medical as that one was really, really nice! Until then my search for the holy grail continues.
@cinoclav@Kidsandliz
I got some washable fabric ones (like a terry cloth material) from LA Apparel, rather pricey, and they don’t seem to fog up glasses. The bands hold it in place a bit differently than I’ve seen others. They have the usual over the ears top band, but the lower band goes behind the ears and up over the top of your head vertically. Holds it securely in place, and they have a “pocket” on the top for your nose, so no wire is needed.
@cinoclav@mike808 Pricey is right but since they are reuable if they are decent then in the long run they’d be cheaper. I am thinking the elastic over the head is to try to keep the pressure off of the back of one’s ears or does it help keep it tighter to your face too? I find looping the ear loops to include the ear pieces of my glasses helps with the ear pressure. Of course then you have to be careful taking the mask off or your glasses can flip off.
@Kidsandliz Not the end of the world. I read your same post previously about them and I had actually looked at the ones you mentioned. Figured these are worth a shot considering I used the $5 off coupons I had from the other canceled sales. So 50 masks for $7 wasn’t a big deal if they weren’t great. They’re good to keep around as spares for those that don’t have any. I normally use the ones I get from my hospital for myself anyway.
@cinoclav If you happen to get ones that are decent and aren’t surgical masks (since those should be reserved for medical personal as much as I liked the ones MDA had us wear while I was there) if you happened to have access to the box if you could take a pic so I can try to find them to buy a box (well presuming they aren’t selling just to the medical field that is) I’d appreciate it.
@Kidsandliz At the moment they’re being doled out in individual paper bags. I haven’t seen the boxes recently. Next time I’m in materials management I’ll keep my eyes open.
@therealjrn A picture. @Kidsandliz asked me to send her a picture. Not a box. Please stop it with the sanctimonious attacks on her already. It’s getting really old for all of us.
@Barney - I really like you. I really like @sammydog01 too. I also like @Kidsandliz. I don’t even need to mention the fourth person in this endless saga. I don’t like seeing what this has become. I agree with things you all say. I also disagree with things you all say. Had she asked me to send her a box of masks, you would have a valid argument on this one. She asked me to send her a picture. I understand that request. The masks we get at work are generally much better quality than the glut of masks available all over these days. If I knew which ones they were I’d buy some myself since our availability at work is limited and I can’t just grab some extras whenever I need them. I feel absolutely no pressure to send her anything. I am perfectly happy to take a picture if I happen to be in the place to take one. Please stop making every single comment she makes more than it has to be. In turn, @Kidsandliz, you need to stop responding and providing them ammo to fire back. Yes, sometimes you’re quite verbose, but you’re also the first to admit it. Reconsider just how much of your life you share here before hitting that Say It button.
I don’t want to be in the middle of it. I don’t want everyone else here to have to read it - all - the - time. I’d like to be friends with all of you. You have something positive to add to my visits here. I just want everyone to grow up and move past it. You all are not going to get along. You’re not going to agree with each other. If you can’t resolve these issues, how about just ignoring each other completely?

?!?!?!
Seems way too relevant for a Meh offering. What’s up?
Maybe they smell like candy corn.
They’re cheaper on amazon if you have prime but not VMP.

Just because they’re disposable doesn’t mean they’re not reusable. My siverware drawer is full of “disposable” plastic cutlery that’s been through the dishwasher many times.
@DaFrogMan I have been getting 3 to 4 days out of these disposable masks, if i keep them clean. You know, like not sneezing in them.
$4 (shipped) for 50 from USA based seller on eBay. https://www.ebay.com/itm/153923173357
@boc and probably much faster shipping too
@boc Just got 20 KN95’s for $8.88 (& free shipping) with arrival in 6 days via eBay.
@MrNews, link?
@MrNews, I just read up on the differences between KN95 and N95 masks…

Strangely, the “FDA registration number” doesn’t appear in the search from https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/cfrl/rl.cfm
I’m somewhat suspicious.

@cinoclav That is too bad. Waste of your money.

@cinoclav Yes certainly worth $7 for emergencies. And hopefully your hospital has had success getting decent ones for you folks to use.
@Kidsandliz Yes, once in a while we get some duds but overall they’re definitely of a higher grade.
