@DrunkCat A friend of the family did his master’s project on something something “liminal” and – even after asking him what it was about – I still was left scratching my head. I just looked up “liminal” and am still not sure what it means in this context. A gas station between two somethings? Exits? Roads?
Poodles? Help a brother out?!
@andymand@DrunkCat “…between, or belonging to, two different places…”
So in this case, a gas station at the edge between two states, or the edge of here and gone, rural and nowhere, etc. I like the reference a great deal and have re-added this word to my vocabulary. Been a while since I have read or hear it.
@andymand@DrunkCat@Jonas4321 The easiest way I can describe “liminal” to you is a pocket of non-Euclidean spacetime that is not rationally perceived through a conventional interpretation of the laws of thermodynamics.
@ekw@joeywolf Very much like the overall appearance of a lot of cat food in that respect. (The cats routinely pass judgement on the acceptability of the uneaten provender by ignoring it, never actually providing commentary about its comparative properties.)
@fantom2993@gertiestn So much of Spamazon’s dysfunctionality is pretty obviously AI-generated that I have lately begun to wonder if The Jeff hasn’t been surreptitiously replaced by one as a day-to-day operational substitute.
@medz this picture was taken from our inventory. Looks like there is only one with an off color… so while its possible you will see some of these in the box, 1 out of 96 sticks is a pretty low percentage and should be a fairly safe bet.
@docflash shelf stable meat should be salty, sodium chloride, nitrates, and nitrities are the safest preservatives with the longest historical use we have. Get frozen meat if you want low sodium.
At $8/lb, it’s a fair price for portable meat. But it’s also salami (3/4 of it is fat; delicious delicious fat), not something I’d say should be eaten regularly.
Compared to a 7 oz box of Hillshire Farm thin sliced hard salami at Walmart, it’s about the same price and fat ratio (but HF has less salt and more spices). While this is portable, I’m again going to say this shouldn’t be a go-to frequent snack.
@pakopako I’m trying to get past the shipping which adds $0.13 /oz. $0.50 /oz is normally my threshold for a cured meats/ jerky “deal” esp. when for unknown, untried brands. I wish I knew what the next 30 meh day deals were.
Maybe something is interesting on the sister sites that would justify going the $6 30-day bulk shipping option?
Note that Protein is actually slightly anti-ketogenic.
KR = (0.9 F + 0.46 P): (C + 0.58 P + 0.1 F)
A truly ketogenic diet is high in fat, not just low carb. The prescription pediatric seizure diet does use MCT oil in place of saturated fat. People that eat paleo ketogenic diet get most of the fat as saturated.
Personally I’m sensitive to excessive seed oils and excessive carbs, so saturated fat is the best place for me to get my calories. When I’m going super strict on keto I have half meat and half cheese. (Although I usually only do this when I have a symptom spike and need to recover. Some veggies are good for me in the long run.)
Wikipedia removed a bunch of the references to the keto formula and target ratios for treatment of disease. Found this lovely study comparing keto diets instead: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6125377/ Shows a range of ketogenic ratios for different diets, and the effects. Found that higher ketogenic ratios were much more effective than many diets that are marketed as keto but actually have a ketogenic ratio < 1, with several diets actually doing worse than their higher carb competitors.
If you’re fat-phobic, just don’t bother with keto. Breaking up your food into more smaller meals can have similar blood-sugar stabilizing effect.
@dlskidmore Huh. Interesting. I’m curious to how your body handles breaking down the saturated fats efficiently (versus the seed oils which are, as far as I remember, unsaturated), like is your metabolism naturally like that or did you have to train it.
@pakopako There is a training period for switching between carbohydrate and ketone metabolism. No short term negative effects from saturated fats, in fact that’s been all positive. I’ve been having trouble getting my doc to order the full subfractionations lipid test, it’s not standard protocol despite being the standard test being insufficient for people on the ketogenic diet. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7174731/
These labels indicate the date by which the manufacturer recommends using the product for optimal quality and freshness. Unlike expiration dates, use-by or best-by dates are not safety dates, and products can often be consumed safely after these dates have passed, as long as they’ve been stored properly.May 16, 2023

For those complaining about added MSG, you must live an unfortunate life avoiding cheese, mushrooms, tomatoes, peas, corn, and pretty much all condiments where MSG occurs in fairly high amounts. There are others, but the list is long and living a life avoiding it must be a flavorless torture. I feel sad for you.
Where’s my celery juice disguising the use of nitrates? In for 2.
They’re pretty good. Compared to Jack Link’s, these are a bit on the salty side, but have way less sugar. They’re tender and flavorful (very slight spice level). A perfect post-workout snack.
They’re still fresh (at least from the top few I inspected).

Where’s the beef?
@yakkoTDI mixed in with the pork.
The person who did the write-up obviously got into the good stash. But not far enough.
@werehatrack one of the lessons of hit comic (and Netflix animated series) Delicious in Dungeon is that food is a luxury meant for the living.
The potential to give me a stomach ache seems high.
These look like they came from a liminal gas station along with other non descript confections.

@ShotgunX That certainly cleared it up, and it explains a lot of the places where I’ve stopped to take a nap while out on the road. Thank you.
@ShotgunX or that.
I want to buy these, but I am sure my wife will complain about the nitrates on them
I am here for all the small salami jokes.
@hchavers That’s what SHE said.
@Trinityscrew Well, yes, a Secure Hardware Extension is inherently a pretty sarcastic device.
@hchavers The best jokes are those that imitate life!
@hchavers @iggy71 And few things imitate life more accurately than small salamis…
Added nitrates means a no go for me. Headache trigger, sadly.
@w0rmwood I get more than enough in my tapwater.
Condition: New
Well, there’s that! Would you buy them if they were used?
@joeywolf maybe
@joeywolf It depends on whose mouth that they were in.
@joeywolf @wplumleyz … And how!
(No, really, how were they used)
@joeywolf @pakopako @wplumleyz
And was any lube water-based?
@joeywolf well, they would look & taste similar
@ekw @joeywolf Very much like the overall appearance of a lot of cat food in that respect. (The cats routinely pass judgement on the acceptability of the uneaten provender by ignoring it, never actually providing commentary about its comparative properties.)
Are these like actual salami or more like summer sausage?
@fantom2993 I wonder, too. And to deepen my questions, Amazon says this is their choice among “jerky.”
@fantom2993 @gertiestn So much of Spamazon’s dysfunctionality is pretty obviously AI-generated that I have lately begun to wonder if The Jeff hasn’t been surreptitiously replaced by one as a day-to-day operational substitute.
Some Amazon reviews talk about bad seals on the packs… I’m too scared.
@medz this picture was taken from our inventory. Looks like there is only one with an off color… so while its possible you will see some of these in the box, 1 out of 96 sticks is a pretty low percentage and should be a fairly safe bet.
@medz Could be worse…like bad seals IN the packs. Seal jerky past it’s prime? I dunno?
@medz @troy Where’s Waldo…oh, there it is at 6:00 and a few up.
/giphy bad meat
@iggy71 @medz @troy
Thank you! That is a very… interesting color like that lil tiny salami been doing some back door stuff
@medz @troy
Unlike the jokes in this thread
/showme guy eating questionable salami that wasn’t sealed properly
@mediocrebot That salami is the perfect color. Bet it’s delish too!
/giphy licking chops
@iggy71 @mediocrebot It would be if they weren’t just eating the wrapper
An American Heart Association survey found that about 75% of adults in the U.S. prefer less sodium in processed and restaurant foods.
NOT showing nutritional info loses Meh! sales.
just sayin’ . . .
@docflash uhhh…the 2nd picture has nutrition AND ingredients
@docflash shelf stable meat should be salty, sodium chloride, nitrates, and nitrities are the safest preservatives with the longest historical use we have. Get frozen meat if you want low sodium.

@pakopako Is it? Couldn’t you spend much less buying truck stop brats that taste better and have free cheese sauce?
@brainmist Aren’t they the same price? But also, they’d be a treat on a trip and not a staple in your pocket
@pakopako I’m trying to get past the shipping which adds $0.13 /oz. $0.50 /oz is normally my threshold for a cured meats/ jerky “deal” esp. when for unknown, untried brands. I wish I knew what the next 30 meh day deals were.

@pakopako If you’re eating keto, fat is a positive…
@dlskidmore while true, keto diets also stay away from saturated fats and too much proteins (which is basically salami)
@pakopako Not universally.
Note that Protein is actually slightly anti-ketogenic.

Once I came home early to find my ex enjoying double salami sticks. That was the end of that relationship and the start of her Onlyfans career.
@djslack is this a suggestion to only date vegans?
@pakopako
Was about to hit the buy button, but sadly these have MSG, which gives me migraines and heart thumpies.
/buy
@uvassassin undefined
@dave oops?
@uvassassin Can you try that again, please?
Yes, MSG is a no go for me as well. The entire family is allergic. Same problems as above plus it keeps me awake.
MSG and Hydrolyzed soy? Nah…
My significant-other’s observation was “Pairs of salamis? So these are Pride salamis?”
And then he asked when the stale date was, and when I told him “sometime in September”, he added “What year?”

Mine arrived - they are fresh and flavorful - not too mild and not too spicy- really glad I ordered them

Got mine today and they’re…fine. A bit greasy but the sticks themselves aren’t bad. Handy protein at least in reasonable portions.
Ordered mine June 25th… Still waiting on shipping.
Just got my mehrathon order in for these.
