Hands-on with the 3DR Solo at Fry's Electronics

I was at Fry's Electronics this weekend and noticed they have a 3DR product kiosk for the new Solo quadcopter with a Solo flight sim using the actual Solo TX controller.

First, the flight sim is... well, not REALLY a sim I guess, but more like a hands-on demo of how the Solo transmitter works, what features are supported, how the controls are situated.

And I have to say... it's pretty slick. It has a very solid, high quality, well constructed feel to it. It's got an integrated multi-color LCD display between the sticks that shows flight modes, telemetry data, etc. Gimbal control is accomplished via an index finger trigger control on the left-rear corner. It's very intuitive and ergonomically situated.

Although the drone itself looks a bit like a flying loaf of bread, my hands-on time with the controller has motivated me to learn more about the capabilities of the Solo.

They (Fry's) had five or six of the Solos in stock. They also had four Iris+, and a half-dozen various DJI Phantom 3's in stock. In fact, they even had a Cheerson CX-20 in stock for $319.99.
