Don’t know if anyone’s familiar with the YouTube channel Binging With Babish (I’m a fan)… This was consistently Andrew’s favorite brand of instant ramen due to the noodle texture and flavors when he compared many different options. I’m curious and in for a buy!
@j4yx0r Keep in mind that Babish loves spicy stuff and on top of the texture and flavor, he also loves the kick so if you aren’t a spicy lover then I’d be wary to recommend this.
I’ve eaten chicken curry. I’ve eaten kimchi. I haven’t ventured this flavor, but I love my Buldak! Too spicy? Add some sour creme. Otherwise, add an egg, mushroom, and Costco chicken cubes. Even then, make broth and use that instead of water. Pretty damn good.
@goldnectar I bought the spicy chicken flavor the last time and hoo boy are they hot! Now I use about a tenth of the sauce packet per bowl and am trying to figure out a good use for the rest of the packet. Maybe I can add water, put it in a sprayer and kill pests.
Review of past Buldaks:
Generic spicy flavor blocks - great flavor, pretty spicy.
“Vegetasty” cups - decent flavor, not as good.
How long do they last? Long enough that I’m not in the market for more noods yet.
Got this one awhile back and thought the flavor was a little bit odd at first since it’s so different from all their other offerings. Gotta say it’s definitely my favorite now. These are also great for the office since they’re easy to prepare and you don’t need to drain anything.
I too have the same variation in a group of olfactory-receptor genes that allows them to strongly perceive the soapy-flavored aldehydes in cilantro leaves. But strangely I still love it. I don’t know why but I do.
@joshirelan I don’t think cilantro tastes soapy, but I have your same experience with Choward’s/C. Howard’s “Violets” — tastes like soap, but weirdly I like them anyway!
@Polymathic Correct, also cilantro and culantro are similar but different. But both are required to make a great sofrito. I don’t have the wisdom yet to make it myself, but we have wonderful friends from Puerto Rico and her dad makes a huge batch about twice a year and I always get about a quart that I keep in my freezer (that was an Olympic level run-on sentence). A tablespoon or two will absolutely make a dish
@agnesnutter@Polymathic Depends on what part of the world you are in. I married an English/Irish woman (which presents its own complications ) but the leafy bits are frequently referred to as coriander there. Thankfully, the Brits don’t really season anything so no one will ever know (I’m pretty sure I just offended someone, somewhere, but I did so with love and humor )
@agnesnutter@capnjb@Polymathic
Speaking of leaves and seeds, a Vietnamese restaurant here used to have a sweet potato curry seasoned with cumin leaves. It was phenomenal, such a great flavor! But I guess it wasn’t popular because they don’t make it anymore. (Story of my life - if I love it, it gets discontinued. )
I’m a diehard Buldak fan thanks to Meh. I bought a 5 pack of this flavor from an Asian market when I saw it. It’s the best looking package but it’s my least favorite flavor so far. It’s not bad, just not my cup of tea. Heat is on the high but not crazy side. Something about the lime just doesn’t hit me the way I would like.
BTW if this leads you to check out other premium ramen, that’s fun. I’ll share that the Momofuko ramen that were on sale at Target for $11 a pack (!) are not even in the same league as Buldak. They’re better than regular instant ramen, sure, but they can’t see Buldak from where they are.
@djslack Some companies brand their stuff as spicy or hot which means they added some spice. I’ve found that Buldak just comes out swinging with a haymaker every time. They don’t play around. I’m ready to get punched in the face 24 times
Oh what the heck-- These seemed much spicier than some of the other ones, but they are pretty damn tasty. I think I’m probably $300-400 into ramen from meh.

This is different than other Buldak I’ve tried. Not just the flavor, but the heat and noodles. I tried the microwave method and it cooked well but was very soupy. Ended up draining off much of the water before stirring in the sauce. I’ll definitely use the boiling water method from now on.
Flavor-wise, this was pretty awesome. I didn’t get much cilantro flavor and the lime flavor is pretty subtle but that ends up being a really good thing.
Heat-wise, the microwave method left the noodles nuclear-level hot. Even after 5 minutes, they hurt to eat just because of temperature. Once they cooled down a little, they were yum but not very spicy. Oddly enough, I felt way more spiciness on my lips compared to Curry Buldak but very little in my mouth. A different kind of spice that’s a little less than other flavors, despite the suspect Scoville charts I see posted regularly.
One of the things I love about Buldak vs other ramen is the thicker, chewier noodles. Those are my jam and I thought that was the signature Buldak noodle but these are pretty thin and wimpy. They work with the soupier sauce+water though and it was still yum. I’d probably buy it again if it comes around, especially if it were in the 40-pack non-bowl variety.
@mikey boiling water method for the win (with one caveat). Noodles were much better with this method. Not nuked into oblivion so a little firmer, less mouth scalding, better able to taste the spice since taste buds aren’t scalded off. Yum!
My one caveat: my cat was a dick with this method and ran through my feet to trip me with the first bowl, trying to eat it off the carpet. Tried that shit with the replacement bowl I made minutes later so he approves of this over microwaving. Guard your gait.
Got these the first time, and on the encore. I like to sautee some mussels and toss them in after it’s fully cooked and ready to go. Amazing with quail eggs. My only disappointment with this brand is how often it’s hyped to be extremely hot and it’s simply just not that spicy. I’ve tried the 3x spice and it’s just really nothing above what I’d normally cook for myself at home or request at an Indian or Thai restaurant if I plan on sharing. If you have some good sauce at home to give it a swift kick in the ass on flavor, it’s amazing. By itself, fine for most folks. The flavor is good though. Not that spicy, but it’s good.

When it says hot chicken, is it talking about being spicy… Or were these made with extra good looking chickens?
@OnionSoup Why can’t it be both?
/showme a very attractive chicken covered in cilantro.
@mediocrebot that chick needs a NSFW tag!!!
Habanero? You’ll need to eat that ramen with a glass of milk or bread.

@goldnectar Or just don’t use the whole packet.
I use like 30-40% and save the remainder to make spicy mayo.
@ShotgunX I love it. I can’t imagine not using the entire 75% of my sodium intake.
@ShotgunX that sounds awesome, however. My mother can’t do a full packet. What a great idea!
POPSOCKETS! SPROCKETS! DAVY CROCKETT! AWESOME!

@ShotgunX When I don’t use most of the packet I feel like it doesn’t have enough overall flavor though…
@agnesnutter Use low-sodium chicken stock instead of water.
@ShotgunX I bet my electric kettle will love that

Monthly reminder that “best by” != “expires on”. I’ve eaten plenty of ramen 30-40 years past the printed date and it was fine.
@brennyn 30–40 years‽ Where did this ramen come from? :o
@agnesnutter Every time I’ve cleaned out a deceased relative’s house they’ve had ramen they bought in the 1970s then forgot about.
I’m a sucker for the Buldak. A new flavor (for me.) I’m in!

I was several decades on this Earth before I learned that cilantro and coriander were the same plant.
@Polymathic Did they even exist on your home planet?
@Polymathic Correct, also cilantro and culantro are similar but different. But both are required to make a great sofrito. I don’t have the wisdom yet to make it myself, but we have wonderful friends from Puerto Rico and her dad makes a huge batch about twice a year and I always get about a quart that I keep in my freezer (that was an Olympic level run-on sentence). @Polymathic Though I usually have heard “coriander” in reference to the seeds, while I’ve only ever heard “cilantro” refer to the leaves
