@1DisabledWarVet They were to me, until we made those ornaments. I was convalescing at a rich oil man’s mansion out in the country in Cushing, Oklahoma. It was a group activity. Kind of like making leather wallets or moccasins, but with plastic, clear, hollow ornaments.
Sounds like a fun craft, and that rehab facility at the rich old man’s mansion sounds interesting. Hope you are rehabed and feeling better.
I used to see those small bottles of acrylic paint at JoAnn’s Fabric store for as cheap as $0.50.
@1DisabledWarVet@Lynnerizer Oh yes indeed. I’m much better now It was pretty nice digs, rich wood paneling, stone walls, frescos in the fireplaces. A nicely appointed library… It had served as a Jesuit retreat also in years past, so they had added a little chapel that had ancient Christian symbols in this massive stone altar. There would be no taking it with them when they left. The Jesuits had built into the walls different plaques and things. A remarkable place. I had a sense I was walking on sanctified ground while I was there…
But I have absolutely no sense of what those little bottles should sell for. I just guessed that 36 fresh bottles for $25 was a pretty good price. ¯\(ツ)/¯
@1DisabledWarVet@therealjrn
I’d love to rehab there, but it might be the kind of place people don’t really want to leave. Maybe that’s their motive. Lol
This IS a good deal, $24.99 for 36 bottles is a great price! I’d get them on clearance when I could but IMO, anything under $1.00 fantastic!
And it’s not we can take it with us…
I’m into paints, but briefly looked up anythingzon and there’s greater color variety. Is it the volume?
I’m not sure I understand the question. Of course there is more variation available in the world. But isn’t this a nice, somewhat concise collection of a variety of colors to serve?
@goldnectar@therealjrn- i think one problem is that ya get two bottles of 18 different colors, not 36 different colors & Yes, ya can paint a glass of a Margarita!!
@goldnectar You are getting more volume of paint for the price. But compared to Amazon, not at a significant discount. So not a bad deal, but not a fantastic one. If you are a hobby miniature painter, probably not worth it. If you are a semi-professional painter painting on canvass, then maybe.
@AaronLeeJohnson@Fuzzalini As someone who was a serious acrylic painter for many, many years…
If you have a lot of painting skill, look up wet blending guides. As well as general guides to painting 40k minis (or whatever type) with acrylics. It can be done and it can even be done fairly well.
That said, to do it well takes some effort. Some of the modern mini paints have been designed to have a good look as their fluids pool/dry or get overpainted with a hilariously small amount of effort. Not all of those look great to my eyes, but they are super easy and fast.
But learning to do acrylics well is a great skill either way. I encourage people to try it, and then to even try scaling the 10,000 mile tall mountaintop of painting canvas (be it realistic or abstract).
@ardycake@therealjrn i think it’s funny that the song says “shake it like a Polaroid picture” and young people are just “Whuut?” No idea of the history. Also I remember the aluminum clip you could keep inside your coat in cold weather to get development temperature up if in really cold weather.
Am I the only one who thinks a matte finish would be a deal breaker, or am I the only one who likes shiny/glossy things? Or can you spray a clear gloss finish on the painted item to make it glossy?
@jmrobinett As a flawed AI, I can’t pick colours, but I looked up credible sources. Jackie Garner’s art blog says that varnishing your finished acrylic painting will unify the sheen, and mixing matte and gloss varnish lets you dial in the shine you want. She also notes that mixing gloss medium into your paint makes it shinier and more transparent. So yes—you can make a matte finish glossy with a varnish or gloss medium.@jmrobinett
I use acrylic paints on 3D prints. Unfortunately, this isn’t much of a deal since Walmart has a 40 assorted color set for less. I guess the only appeal here is I wouldn’t have to buy it from Walmart. Sold.
Paint is actually a product you don’t want to buy if it’s been sitting around for toooo long. What’ll meh do if the bottles arrive and many are hardened? Will there be any refunds?
@HELLOALICE they have a 90 day warranty, so yeah, I’d believe that Meh would make it right.
That said I’ve gotten acrylic paint in IRKs that was just fine, and for it to make it to an IRK you know it had to sit in a dusty corner of the warehouse and fight off whatever is left of KoolHandJoe’s evil doll hordes for a while to escape. These should be A-OK.

I can finally paint the town RED!!
@yakkoTDI or 17 other colors!
@yakkoTDI but not Georgia Red, as it seems to have been excluded from the set. ( How could they?)
@yakkoTDI-With only 2 oz of red paint¿? 🫣
Or, maybe it’s 4 oz!!
@1DisabledWarVet @yakkoTDI It must be one of those Christmas village towns.
@1DisabledWarVet @yakkoTDI Maybe it’s a small town, DWV.
“Pale Mauve” is a rather poor excuse for purple.
@heartny Isn’t she the old lady drinking her life away at the bar?
@heartny @yakkoTDI That’s Lola.
@Fuzzalini @heartny @yakkoTDI She was a showgirl.
@Fuzzalini @heartny @yakkoTDI Dated Tony, I think.
maybe you’re right, i do need a 137th hobby…
Bueller? Bueller?
Very tempting. The price isn’t bad and I’m a sucker for craft stuff. However, I worry that these would freeze in transport…that would be my luck.
@k4evryng Two of the same 18-color packs.
@troy I just realized my mistake and edited my comment. Thank you for clarifying.
@k4evryng
You must be new here.
@yakkoTDI I’m not…but you are correct that I should know better, lol!
I bought them anyway.
@k4evryng That’s a very good point about freezing. It’s so cold right now!

I’ve used similar acrylic paint to make Christmas tree ornaments out of those plastic hollow orbs available in craft stores.
I don’t know from bargain when it comes to those little bottles of acrylic paint, but this offer seems to be an outstanding value meh.
@therealjrn- Are there unfamiliar acrylic paints¿?

How is this a good deal, exactly? I’m into paints, but briefly looked up anythingzon and there’s greater color variety. Is it the volume?

I was just looking at warhammer paints.
@AaronLeeJohnson I was wondering if these might be good for gaming figures. Not a lot of silver and gold, though I have those already.

Is the texture okay? I’m down for this but if they’re gonna all show up separated it would really suck.
@ardycake Can you just shake them like a Polaroid to mix them back? Paint sits in the craft stores too.
@ardycake @therealjrn i think it’s funny that the song says “shake it like a Polaroid picture” and young people are just “Whuut?” No idea of the history. Also I remember the aluminum clip you could keep inside your coat in cold weather to get development temperature up if in really cold weather.
@ardycake @pmarin @therealjrn I, too am old.
@ardycake @pmarin @therealjrn As I recall, the clip was slightly curved so that you could tuck it under your armpit while the picture developed.
@ardycake @pmarin @therealjrn
So don’t shake it at all since that messes up the photo? I thought the modern wisdom was to just set it and let it develop.
@ardycake @mbersiam @pmarin @therealjrn That doesn’t stop people from shaking it anyway
Has anyone used this brand for TTRPG minis before? I’ve been debating getting back into D&D minis.
Am I the only one who thinks a matte finish would be a deal breaker, or am I the only one who likes shiny/glossy things? Or can you spray a clear gloss finish on the painted item to make it glossy?
@jmrobinett Maybe, probably not, and yes.
@djslack @jmrobinett
Maybe, probably not, and yes…
I agree!
And, clear gloss spray is a great option!
@djslack @jmrobinett @Lynnerizer I was just going to add that I prefer matte and then I add a semi gloss or gloss finish if that’s what I’m going for.
@djslack @jmrobinett @sillyheathen
Great minds and all…

Is Weisbrandt related to Rembrandt…?
@bee1doll
Possibly, third cousins once removed!
