@yakkoTDI An inebriated “AI” bot in the form of a feline. That will be commmonplace some day and then what will “@DrunkCat” do then to stand out from the crowd get them to notice it and take it back?
That software bug must be a good one. First it causes the “@DrunkCat” bot to spew incomprehensible “words” and then to get stuck in a loop saying the same thing over and over.
So many of these types of products use a form of consumable, disposable refill, when they really don’t need to. This is a cash grab, expecting the consumer to continue to purchase an expendable part of the product.
A better variant of this same type of insect trap uses the same principle to attract insects (UV light), but then sucks them into the trap with a brushless fan, where they dessicate and can be emptied from the catchment area later. No need to keep buying sticky pads.
@PooltoyWolf That isn’t a variant I’ve seen in stores. I’ve seen 2 brands that work like this that are everywhere, and one of the brands has a fan trap, that still uses replaceable sticky pads.
@kevinrs I too have seen the variant that uses the sticky pads with the fan, and in that case the sticky part is entirely unnecessary. The product works just fine without them!
@therealjrn The basic principle is sound - use a UV light to attract insects to a fan which then sucks the bugs into a holding chamber, which is emptied out later.
It could be argued that the one for sale on Meh today looks better and takes up less counter space - it essentially resembles a night light.
@IAMIS I think it’s the ol’ “genetic evolution” science experiment at play.
I have a UV zapper that hangs up high in my kitchen over the sink where the little fruitflies and sinkmoths would congregate. Because I had hung it up, the majority had been high-flying large-winged variants and a lot of them got zapped! But after the zapper had been doing it’s thing for a while, I noticed less and less got zapped. A number of generations later, and only the low-flying smaller-winged flies have passed on their genetics as all the larger-winged high-flyers were killed before passing on their genes. Now I have as many as I had before hanging up the zapper, but none of them fly very high at all.
I wonder if in the event of these sticky ones, if your critters are the ones left with poor eyesight who aren’t attracted to UV as much, or (like humans with cilantro aversion) have a different scent mutation like being repelled by the smell of the adhesive? And only those genes are the ones left being passed on, so the trap becomes less effective over time.
@IAMIS@PooltoyWolf@therealjrn I have deployed the original coffee can sized Katchy in the same room as a commercial apple cider vinegar trap, and the ACV caught a lot more fruit flies.
These were available on meh April 1, a month ago, 2 for $29.99. I bought these but the sticky was not enough to trap the fruit flies. As soon as I opened the bottom door, many unstuck ones flew out. I looked up the lifespan of a fruit fly and found they were 40 to 50 days. I could wait that long to change the sticky pad so now I just take the trap outside and let them go.
@haydesigner Same here. Odd, since I remember getting swarmed by mosquitoes as a child, but no more. Maybe a lifetime of consuming preservatives and chemicals has made me less palatable.
@lonocat@whogots cat with live mouse in mouth is better. Not for the mouse though.
Sadly my cat passed away a few years ago. Then I made the mistake of leaving a lot of unsecured food accessible to mice, and apparently they had a big mouse party/orgy while I was away for the Winter. Yesterday my wife found some of her shoes in a closet; one had some rice, and another had PastaDrop penne pasta.
@lonocat@molin123 My first cat, a 20lb tux that was smarter than a fifth grader, would eat palmetto bugs ON REQUEST. I didn’t know what I had.
My current biggest cat, a lovingly dimwitted 19lb Weegie, loves hunting but gets upset by the sensation of bug feet on his tongue. His little tortie sister probably eats a lot of things that I don’t know about.

Insect trap? That’s what “AI” is for.
@DrunkCat Bro, have you been robotized?
@AaronLeeJohnson Please resubmit your comment in the form of a showme prompt.
@DrunkCat I thought they called the other day. Has the lust of your life still not come running back to your amazing communication skills?
@mediocrebot
It’s quoting James Joyce.
@yakkoTDI Please resubmit your comment in the form of a showme prompt.
@mediocrebot Precisely.
@yakkoTDI
Looks like “@DrunkCat” still hasn’t installed its latest bug fix software update.
@ItalianScallion Today’s product can help with bugs. Maybe the inebriated feline can use it to win them back.

Do they makes these human/pokemon sized? Asking for a friend
@seespotbark what would Pokemon sized be? That’s like saying “animal sized”

@PooltoyWolf Was is something like this?

@therealjrn Probably. There are dozens and dozens of similar devices that work the same way.
@PooltoyWolf oh yeah, that makes sense because there’s all kinds of little annoying critters flying around.
@therealjrn The basic principle is sound - use a UV light to attract insects to a fan which then sucks the bugs into a holding chamber, which is emptied out later.
It could be argued that the one for sale on Meh today looks better and takes up less counter space - it essentially resembles a night light.
@PooltoyWolf @therealjrn We have one similar to this and it is effectively a nightlight as well. Dual-purpose!
@PooltoyWolf @therealjrn Have one of those and I think I must have smart fruit flies, because it catches only a very small percentage of them.
@PooltoyWolf I got one of the fan-only types several years ago, and it works pretty well. I likely got it via Meh or Woot.

@dragoncmndr Sounds logical. It’s like an arms race!
@PooltoyWolf @therealjrn @whogots I’ll have to deploy mine and the vinegar ones at the same time and do a comparison.

I’m lucky enough to live where there are virtually no mosquitos. And yet still warm.
@haydesigner I live inside a house too!
@haydesigner
Where, pray tell, is this utopic paradise [generally- like a state or largest near-by city name]?
Thank you in advance for your helpful retirement location advice…
@haydesigner Same here. Odd, since I remember getting swarmed by mosquitoes as a child, but no more. Maybe a lifetime of consuming preservatives and chemicals has made me less palatable.
But I’ve already got an insect trap

@lonocat
Cat, for hours: Oh my god there’s a bug let’s get it let’s get the bug oh my god oh my god bug bug bug
Cat with live bug in mouth: Now what?
@lonocat @whogots my (very fat) cat ambled up to a large spider in the kitchen one time and promptly chewed and swallowed that sucker, what a legend
@lonocat @whogots cat with live mouse in mouth is better. Not for the mouse though.

@lonocat @pmarin aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaugh

I’m actually in the market for insect traps. I just need one that I can pin to my shirt so the gnats, STOP, FLYING, INTO, MY, FACE.
@AaronLeeJohnson Ugh, no kidding - they try to fly up your nose, even!
@AaronLeeJohnson @Kyeh Even better is when you are riding bicycle and get a little sweaty. They stick and try to swim all over.
@AaronLeeJohnson
I feel your pain, and share it as well…
They also fly into the mouth, ears, and light on any healing skin wounds- irritating the absolute crap out of them, etc…
Is this dual voltage?
@blaketronics Briefly.
do these come in larger sizes?
/giphy goldblum the fly

@zippyus Help me!
@zippyus
Less fancifully, are they good for catching those damn stinkbugs that we are finding everywhere?
So it’s fly paper and an LED? That’s all it is?
Are these compatible with the name brand insect traps, or do they use their own non-compatible sticky pads?
@OnionSoup How about Post-It notes?
@blaineg @OnionSoup Or a piece of double-sided tape.
The pricing listed seems a bit deceptive - the comparison of $25 at Amazon is also a 2-pack.
@davidhguyton
This is also a 2-pack.
@Kyeh Yeah that’s exactly what I mean. The pricing says
which implies the comparison price is $25 for 1 vs a “great deal” of $16 for 2.
$252 for $16In reality they’re both two-packs: one two-pack for $25 or one two-pack for $16.
@davidhguyton Oh, gotcha.
