Got this from Amazon a couple weeks ago, 2 for $10. It’s my new favorite headlamp. This one one looks different, but the specs are the same. I love that the button order is red, bright white, then dim white. (On mine anyway)
@huntd I got the pro version a few weeks ago. They work great, but you have to look at the answered questions on Amazon to find out how to fully use them. The pack-in instructions didn’t say anything about holding the button down to change brightness and that’s the only way to get max brightness.
@drmarble@werehatrack I’ve been given a gift. I now know which exact ear worm will be chewing at my brain until I fall asleep tonight (and ready to get right back at it when I wake up tomorrow)…
@drmarble@k4evryng@shahnm@werehatrack Stereo Binaural, simultaneously! Left-brain / right-brain kind of thing. Should be a good mental workout to get good at listening to both sides of an argument, especially during this political season.
“or trying to re-light the pilot light of your hot water heater in the dark corner of your basement.”
Personally, I prefer a cold water heater. Just Sayin’…
@ckcarlton They use alkalines. They’re okay, but these have internal lithiums. “Which is better?” is a complicated issue, and largely dependent upon circumstances.
@ckcarlton@werehatrack Yes, complicated indeed. The light quality can vary a lot, especially in the cheaper ones. The internal Li-Ion battery is probably better, unless it doesn’t hold a charge. Then you have e-Waste since you can’t replace it (and even if you can, the parts and time to do it wouldn’t justify fixing a $6 light). I like to always have a headlight in the door compartment of my truck, and in a drawer in my camper. Use them quite a bit. And one in my bedroom drawer. So yeah I have lots of them. The truth is the AAA battery ones tend to be pretty reliable, and almost always will work when you need them. A rechargeable sounds better if you do work crawling in basements or something and use them for hours a day, but I don’t. And you can always put good-quality rechargeable AAAs in the battery ones. That’s the main reason I’m probably avoiding this deal – fear of battery not charging at all after a while, or being self-drained when I actually need it. BTW if you really have an “emergency kit” with a headlight, always good to have spare new batteries also packed with it.
@blaineg@ckcarlton@werehatrack Most of mine still work from various brands. (maybe a bit of tightening). but a few did just give up all hope of being elastic, as you say.
I think it’s hit or miss though I’d think the bargain ones would be worse; that has been my experience. I just looked for headlamp replacement headband and you can buy some, for example the very premium Petzl brand sells headbands — for a higher price than this pair of lights. Of couse those headlamps go for a lot more. One offered true 900lm performance in a lightweight 100gm unit. You’e not going to find that for $6.
@blaineg@ckcarlton@pmarin I have made new headbands from black 3/4" or 1" elastic bought at JoAnn’s. I just recycle the original design and plastic buckle bits. Some use odd widths, and the generic elastic with the nice, soft backing can be next to impossible to find, so the replacements are often not as good, but they work.
I seriously considered this until I saw it was rechargeable. I already have too many things I need to keep charged. And too many I wonder how difficult it will be to extract the battery from so I can responsibly dispose of it at the end of it’s life.
@sunderbug Actually 300 for a headlamp is pretty good. The cheezy ones that usually sell for a couple of bucks are usually 30-100 max, and often have a creepy bluish light.
Yes, there are high-power ones like 500-1000lm used for adventurers, emergency workers, things like that. Actually delivering that much light (not some made-up inflated spec) still needs a lot of wattage from batteries, and sophisticated cooling for the LEDs. I’m sure HF will sell you a “5000 lumen” one but it’s probably really 150 or something.
@pmarin@sunderbug Actually, HF has contracted a serious case of honesty about their lumens of late, and they pretty much hit the levels that they claim, though even I have to be really skeptical about their claim of 6000 lumens from their currently brightest unit. At some point, somebody will test it. I think I’ll wait for those numbers. I will note that the form factor and battery pack depicted is nominally within the realm of 6000-lumens-capable, but loads of other output claims in that area have tested at anything from 10% down to 4%. I’m prepared for there to be some optimism in the number, and I’d be entirely unsurprised if it measured more like 4500 to 5000, which would be short, but still closer by an order of magnitude than most of the no-recognizable-brand lights on Amazon and the even more ludicrous ones on eBay.
@sunderbug I am a trail runner and 300 lumens is plenty for trail running, where being able to see rocks at high speed is pretty important (running down mountains at full speed…).
I’m tempted to buy this so as to replace the non-rechargable headlamps I have, but now I am frozen pondering what’s more environmentally harmful: the batteries I go through with the lamps I already own, or replacing perfectly functional ones with these?
I think I’ll use the indecision as a way to avoid adding more microUSB to my life.
Arrived, tested, happy-making. I could have made good use of one earlier in the day, but I was 300 miles away at the time. (Adventures in Vehicular Ownership.)

@shahnm gee giphy, thanks for the reminder.,.
Thank you for not selling them for 11.99!
@JvB wouldn’t have paid any more than $11.98 since there are two.

@werehatrack et al.
To be more obvioius, JIC.
Besides, I wanted to see it again.
[Also, in tribute to this month’s goat.]
@shahnm (@werehatrack @drmarble)
If you’d prefer a different ear worm, this one is hard for me to banish:
“If I were a rich man,
…”
OK, you take it.
@drmarble @phendrick @shahnm @werehatrack great….now BOTH of these songs will be stuck in my head for the next week!

…but i think i forgot to charge it.
Baby, baby, baby, light my way
Oh, come on
Baby, baby, baby, light my way
Oh, ultraviolet
Maybe that’s that the wrong song
I already have a head light, from allergies and sinus irritation.
Oops, let me fix the comma:
I already have a head, light from allergies and sinus irritation.
That’s Funny! Neti Pot FTW Phendrick!
I hope they hold a charge. I rarely need this kind of light, but I do once in a while.

I wear a headlamp walking the dog in the wee hours. Mine is soooo stretched out that if falls down to my neck. Finally, something I need, Meh!
Pleasantly surprised that it’s not 3 AAAs. I guess I should encourage that.
Though I wonder how soon the elastic will fail, like all my other head lights.

@ckcarlton @pmarin @werehatrack Have you found any with reliable headbands? Everyone one I’ve got has lost their elasticity way too soon.

Buying because they are rechargeable. I’m tired of having to grab new batteries for those non-everyday items.

How do I get the straps into the plastic holder?
@mdjst5 I was overthinking it. I figured it out.
Mine arrived today, bright is indeed very bright. I’m pleased.
