You could be taking a quick excursion to a civic center in Tacoma or an expedition out to Tahoe. You could be a New Yorker looking to escapeFifth Avenue and explore the town and country beyond the big city. You could be off to a party weekend in Malibu or at Daytona Beach.
Hell, you could aspire to be an explorer, taking a journey to the edge of the earth, or to the heart of big sky country, moving with ghost-like stealth to avoid a trafficcitation as you drive in search of a wild colt or mustang or bronco to tame.
Truly, the destination doesn’t matter. You’re going to want a charger.
@hchavers Two things: We didn’t hit 50% of car models coming with USB until about 2008-10…
And if you ever use rental cars, the onboard Sync/WinCE/etc POS infotainment systems automatically try to snarf all your phone’s contact info as soon as you plug in to the USB port. Using one of these crappy 12v-USB chargers is better than wasting time fighting the idiotic UI for erasing your stolen personal data while the rental droid in the return lane tries to charge you again for the prepaid tank of gas…
@hchavers@troy To also be fair, these things offered on Meh today aren’t fast chargers either - equivalent to a 2.4 amp brick. (Fast charging car chargers do exist; I have one and they make a huge difference!)
@hchavers Up until earlier this month, I only had a 2004 and a 2006, neither of which was fancy enough to have USB. Now I own a 2023 with 4 USB ports and a wireless pad, but also one of these outlets - and honestly it’s probably worth making my passenger charge through this plug so the car doesn’t try to connect to their phone.
@blaadnort The systems that use Bluetooth are not much better. They obsessively turn on, pair with any phone they remember, and try to take over operation of it. We have a Nissan that does this. I have gotten into the habit of stabbing the audio system power off button as soon as I start the engine. If I don’t, it tells the phone to start reading whatever audiobook my partner was last listening to. I really hate that.
@mehvid1 The ones on SideDeal (not currently active) list both USB-PD and QC (3.0?) so those are in fact fast chargers, and will charge your device faster than the ones on this forum page. However, you will need a USB-C to USB-C cable, since the ports on them are USB-C only.
@lowlypeon Those can’t be Russian, they have all their wheels.
Also, if you’ve ever met any Ukrainians, this is totally in line with their typical sense of humor: dark, dry, and based on a pathologically sarcastic level of endurance.
@madanthony@narfcake Don’t forget about the Buick LaCrosse and LeSabre, the Ford Expedition, and the Kia Forte. If you want to stretch it, could also consider the "wild"cat and the "track"hawk.
Clever and entertaining write-up today!
@doxeelady Ever notice how many Ford vehicles start with E and F? Focus, Fiesta, Fusion, Escape, Explorer, Expedition, Excursion…others I can’t think of? The exceptions seem to be the retros like the Bronco and Mustang.
Bought a couple of these before and they are great (at least the ones made by Aukey are). But I’m tired of moving them from car to car to car every time we take a trip so I’m stocking up at this price.
