As mentioned by @troy the brand new Camry rental we just had in Vegas had multiple ports but they ALL sucked… Even the one in the console that was a USB-C.
I THINK I found all the vehicle model names. Best writeup in a while. Amazing how not one of them occurred to me besides Bronco during the first read-through.
You could be taking a quick excursion to a civic center in Tacoma or an expedition out to Tahoe. You could be a New Yorker looking to escapeFifth Avenue and explore the town and country beyond the big city. You could be off to a party weekend in Malibu or at Daytona Beach.
@PooltoyWolf I’m counting 11 just in the first paragraph.
Hell, you could aspire to be an explorer, taking a journey to the edge of the earth, or to the heart of big sky country, moving with ghost-like stealth to avoid a trafficcitation as you drive in search of a wild colt or mustang or bronco to tame.
Truly, the destination doesn’t matter. You’re going to want a charger.
@lowlypeon Those can’t be Russian, they have all their wheels.
Also, if you’ve ever met any Ukrainians, this is totally in line with their typical sense of humor: dark, dry, and based on a pathologically sarcastic level of endurance.
Bought a couple of these before and they are great (at least the ones made by Aukey are). But I’m tired of moving them from car to car to car every time we take a trip so I’m stocking up at this price.
@hchavers Two things: We didn’t hit 50% of car models coming with USB until about 2008-10…
And if you ever use rental cars, the onboard Sync/WinCE/etc POS infotainment systems automatically try to snarf all your phone’s contact info as soon as you plug in to the USB port. Using one of these crappy 12v-USB chargers is better than wasting time fighting the idiotic UI for erasing your stolen personal data while the rental droid in the return lane tries to charge you again for the prepaid tank of gas…
@narfcake@troy@werehatrack@yakkoTDI@blaadnort I should have known Mehizens don’t buy the luxury cars. Likewise, I should have remembered USB charging was not standardized until 2006.
@hchavers Not everyone, especially now, can afford to have newer cars. Plus, it’s always handy to convert that 12 volt socket into even more USB ports!
@hchavers@troy To also be fair, these things offered on Meh today aren’t fast chargers either - equivalent to a 2.4 amp brick. (Fast charging car chargers do exist; I have one and they make a huge difference!)
@hchavers Up until earlier this month, I only had a 2004 and a 2006, neither of which was fancy enough to have USB. Now I own a 2023 with 4 USB ports and a wireless pad, but also one of these outlets - and honestly it’s probably worth making my passenger charge through this plug so the car doesn’t try to connect to their phone.
@blaadnort The systems that use Bluetooth are not much better. They obsessively turn on, pair with any phone they remember, and try to take over operation of it. We have a Nissan that does this. I have gotten into the habit of stabbing the audio system power off button as soon as I start the engine. If I don’t, it tells the phone to start reading whatever audiobook my partner was last listening to. I really hate that.
@PooltoyWolf Hey… I found your comment! I knew someone had said recently they had a good car charger. I was hoping I could get your opinion on today’s SideDeal offering….
@mehvid1 The ones on SideDeal (not currently active) list both USB-PD and QC (3.0?) so those are in fact fast chargers, and will charge your device faster than the ones on this forum page. However, you will need a USB-C to USB-C cable, since the ports on them are USB-C only.
@madanthony@narfcake Don’t forget about the Buick LaCrosse and LeSabre, the Ford Expedition, and the Kia Forte. If you want to stretch it, could also consider the "wild"cat and the "track"hawk.
Clever and entertaining write-up today!
@doxeelady Ever notice how many Ford vehicles start with E and F? Focus, Fiesta, Fusion, Escape, Explorer, Expedition, Excursion…others I can’t think of? The exceptions seem to be the retros like the Bronco and Mustang.
@doxeelady@tweezak The naming convention was intentional from the early 2000s. Most of their trucks/SUVs started with E, cars started with F, and the Mercury siblings started with M.
I just don’t see how you could charge a car with these.
@awk Not unless they come with a no-limit Amex card.
Sonata one but two of these? OK, I’m in.

In for a pair
I THINK I found all the vehicle model names. Best writeup in a while. Amazing how not one of them occurred to me besides Bronco during the first read-through.
@PooltoyWolf I’m counting 11 just in the first paragraph.
@narfcake Oh there’s a TON. LOL
@PooltoyWolf Oh, I know. Another 13 here:
@PooltoyWolf if you really want a kick in the pants, try putting the word “anal” in front of every Ford model…
@mrdancer @PooltoyWolf That first started with this model:
@mrdancer @narfcake Of course my mind went to that car first.
Not even for $9.99. LOL.
Anyone else think that the image of russian missile platforms at launch could be in bad taste right now, or am I overthinking it?
@lowlypeon Yes, but also, yes.
@lowlypeon Those can’t be Russian, they have all their wheels.

So I guess this is the official product post. I demand they be merged!
These are for your grandparents car, or parents if you are old enough. Most cars in this century have their own USB ports.
@hchavers Fair, but many of the cars I’ve been in have very slow charging USB ports
@hchavers @troy No factory USB port in my 2008.
@hchavers @narfcake @troy Same in my 2007.
@hchavers @narfcake @troy @werehatrack No USB in my 2001, 2003, 2006 or the 2005 I traded for the 2006.

@hchavers And my 91 350sdl does not have any usb charging. Wait you said this century. Sorry…
@hchavers No factory USB in my 2010.
@beardo @hchavers Likewise on my 2012, which was top of the line spec.
But it already has both lighter sockets occupied by this type of gadget.

I don’t think I’d ever consider even reading my credit card number silently in the presence of a site that looks like grooves.land
I don’t know why I’m (suddenly?) shilling for Meh companies, but anyone who might’ve been interested in these should check out today‘s SideDeal offer.
What…no love for the Flex? That should have been easy to fit in there.
@tweezak Or a winter Solstice?
@detailer @tweezak Or a hot desert wind like the Scirocco or Bora.
@tweezak
Or Fusion@tweezak and no Escape
@doxeelady Ever notice how many Ford vehicles start with E and F? Focus, Fiesta, Fusion, Escape, Explorer, Expedition, Excursion…others I can’t think of? The exceptions seem to be the retros like the Bronco and Mustang.

@doxeelady @narfcake Interesting. I wonder why they decided to do that.
@doxeelady @narfcake @tweezak Their earlier superstition held that the car names must have an F or a T, or the model would flop.
I may have a spare somewhere, but I have no idea where.

I still think ya need cables, or rather, 2 cables!! I may just stuff 4 cables, 2 short ones & 2 long ones, in the ride!
USB-A? Ew, no.
Enough of these get put in irks that many of us have far more of these than we have places to plug them in.
@Kidsandliz but those are the super-crappy one amp versions.
Mad
Ape
Poop
@twinesurge That would be “poo” – Mad Ape only allows 3 letters, max.
