@pmcgrane@werehatrack Problem was they were trying to use these as wi-fi controlled thrusters for the Boeing crew capsule that they couldn’t debug fully enough to trust putting the 2 humans back on it. But as a bonus they get an all expense-paid 6-month Holiday vacation in space!
@goldnectar Mehrathons will always have many items that have been seen before, simply as a side effect of needing ~100 offers across a day or two. That said, this month has had a new deal all but two days (for Charlee Bear treats and Rocketbook Planners, both of which is crap people bought and liked a lot)
@phendrick@werehatrack This, for sure. We’ll probably evolve into creatures with huge eyes and super-long fingers like aye ayes - although I guess with voice assistants we won’t even need the fingers.
These remind me of the decor lighting on the outside of a nearby business that failed during the plague. There was a certain non-family-friendliness about its trade dress. Downwind of its patio, I could have choked on the cigar stench at times.
Can anyone weigh in if these would be easily turned on and off via my Android cell?
I.e., is the App at least that functionally adequate?
We need new bedside wall sconces and I have thought about using these for that purpose each time I have seen them here.
Thank you in advance,
PA
Look, you guys obviously have a lot of these you have to unload, and I get that. But for people thinking about buying, you should really think twice before installing upward-pointing outdoor lights. Light pollution is a real thing, not some joke.
@The_Tim That is a good point. For commercial building things like that used to be quite common. I notice now everything is downward-pointing lights usually already upgraded to LED (though I’m not always pleased about the color and intensity of some LED lights). I think for commercial buildings there may be city building code requirements, but that would be for things lighting a parking lot, for example, not the side of your house.
I can see these would work “IF” you have at least a moderate roof overhang over a side wall, so that the upward direction of the light would illuminate the underside of the “eave” I think it’s called which would create a pleasant general illumination, and not too much escaping into the sky. If you’ve ever walked outside on a creepy dark night with only downward-pointing lights, it’s easy to think there may be something like a vampire hiding right above the light where it’s totally dark.
@The_Tim I agree, we’d never use these vertically outside, although they wouldn’t be that great horizontally either.
I’m not too worried about it though- we’re using them indoors.
My least favorite lights to be seen being used are the [previously ubiquitous] automatic mercury vapor lights, not only is their light an obnoxious bluish white, it also radiates in all directions.
The Kodak plant in a town nearby was the first to use the orangey-peach sodium vapor lamps as a cost and energy-saving measure in their parking lot lighting, and the lights outside their buildings.
The lights they used radiated as much light up as they did down, which caused them no end of problems, until they ended up having to put covers over the tops of them all.
It turned out that that reddish-peach hue reflected off of the billowing mist from their air-handlers, which led to multiple 911 calls reporting what was thought to be a huge fire.
Thus, the environment was [somewhat] protected from light pollution because of human stupidity.
@tlaughner Thank you for sharing!
I bought 2 when they first came out, but have yet to install them (I have major procrastination issues). Is there any tips or advice you can give me when installing or using them? Is the app straightforward & functional? Any connection issues?
They look really nice installed on your garage so I’m now excited to finally install mine. I’ve also noticed many homes in the neighborhood starting to use this style, which is sold at the local big-box hardware store at 4x this price with NO smart control. They really give a classy, modern look to any home.
@Kerig3 they are a very straight forward install if you are replacing an existing fixture. Turn off power, remove 2 screws from sides, mount the mounting plate to your box, 3 wires to wire up, and then screw the side screws back in. Hardest part is holding the light while trying to twist the wires. They need pretty good wifi signal so make sure where you want to install them has coverage. App is ok, I use Alexa for automation.
@tlaughner Thank you for your reply. Good to know they’re easy to install. My garage is about 20 feet from my router so I should get a decent signal, fingers crossed.
@dphenry157 They come with mounting plates similar to any other outdoor lighting fixture (two screws into the wall, and a screw on each side of the fixture)

Isn’t this the same item as the last item from the Mehrathon?
Ha!
Yes, it was a long time since you last sold these.
@blaineg Hah, they’re so funny.
Déjà vu?
@xobzoo all over again…
Huh?? The 1st item after the meh-rathon is the same one that ended the meh-rathon?? WTF??
/giphy wtf
@IndifferentDude bing chilling
These are the same as the last deal in the meh-rathon, though.
@lljk I think that’s the joke, yes
Ok, I thought I was going crazy seeing the same items for sale that just ended. It seems I’m in good company here seeing the same thing.
Any guesses as to how much inventory they have of these sconces (and how much they started with)?
@agnesnutter In order: Too much, and WAY too much.
@agnesnutter ALL of them.
@heartny This should be on a tee shirt!
@heartny the feeling of having already bought this crap before.
Well, they only sold 2 in the last 30 mins. of the mercifully ended 2-Day 'thon; any wagers on how many they’ll sell for the entire day??
@IndifferentDude Well, 13 minutes in and someone in Oklahoma finally bought 3. (Or 3 someones each bought one, all in the same county.)
Can they power a Space Shuttle? Ehh, sure yes.
@pmcgrane They make terrible warp nacelles.
@pmcgrane @werehatrack Problem was they were trying to use these as wi-fi controlled thrusters for the Boeing crew capsule that they couldn’t debug fully enough to trust putting the 2 humans back on it. But as a bonus they get an all expense-paid 6-month Holiday vacation in space!
Am I paying $5 a month to buy this same crap nobody wanted to buy before? The repetitive items is getting discouraging.

Why are common items getting "smart"er, but people seem to have reached a plateau (or even started sliding down)?
@phendrick The former may be accelerating the latter.
@phendrick @werehatrack This, for sure. We’ll probably evolve into creatures with huge eyes and super-long fingers like aye ayes - although I guess with voice assistants we won’t even need the fingers.
@Kyeh @werehatrack If it had a phone in its hands, it’d look like some of the drivers who have cut me off.
@Kyeh @phendrick @werehatrack Welcome to the future.
First!
@wootthereitis
@wootthereitis Doofus.
And now, for something completely indifferent…
These remind me of the decor lighting on the outside of a nearby business that failed during the plague. There was a certain non-family-friendliness about its trade dress. Downwind of its patio, I could have choked on the cigar stench at times.
I got these in an IRK, so I’ll pass.

Still happy with them! Glad the pic helped

I brought this up the first time they were sold, and was met with and later mockery by a Meh employee, but it’s a serious issue that I don’t think people should just ignore.
Here are a few links with lots of good info on the topic:
This image is from that first link. The type of light being sold here today is all the way on the left.

WiFi, so they’re smart lights? I’m beginning to think I prefer a stupid home.
If anyone is on the fence, I bought 6 of them so far, and they are really nice. Just finished installing 2 more today, very happy with the results.
@tlaughner Actually yeah they do seem nice. And I definitely want that garage!

How do they attach to the wall?
