@curtise is this a legit question? What am I, a blacksmith? Do I look like a forgemaster to you? Do you see any foundries around here? Did I ask enough sarcastic rhetorical questions to get across that I don't know?
@JonT You guys are the ones that mentioned that it is "100% copper, like the finest electrical wiring", which is what people are stealing and smelting lately. But seriously, I was expecting you to let me know how heavy the cups are, like @MsELizardBeth said.
@curtise I don't think there is a enterprise where people steal copper wire and smelt it, I'm pretty sure they just take it to the recycling place that will pay them the most for it and not ask questions.
@cengland0 Copper-Plated Nickel with Stainless Steel Interior and Brass Handle vs today's all copper, there is a difference and if we are talking about Moscow Mules, it is a big difference.
Ahh, nothing like Twofer Tuesday to put my life back into reality. She lurks in the shadows, pulling in unsuspecting Mehricans with promises of wonder and lust. Alas, my focus tonight is on my newborn daughter and not her sleazy tricks. Catch ya on the flip side Twofer Tuesday you filthy temptress!
@studerc Congratulations! Best wishes! Sorry I missed this when you posted - here's hoping you get to sleep the night all the way through sooner than later.
@Kidsandliz Amazing. And to think, most people can only go a couple days without drinking. You can go weeks without food but without drinking you'll die quickly.
@PenguinOnTheRox that's the best part about a Moscow Mule in them! The little shock complements the carbonation and bite of the ginger beer and sourness and acidity of the lime.
@tightwad There's just two of us so I only have two plates and two coffee cups to clean each day. I just rinse them off and put them into the dishwasher and then turn it on once a week.
I don't want to fill up the entire sink with hot and soapy water just to wash a small amount of dishes each day. For efficiency sake, just do them all at once.
These look terrible, it doesn't even look like I can tape these under my shirt and go about my day without the public being aware I had mule mugs made from pure Moscow copper under my shirt. No point in getting these.
@Stallion they change the way certain drinks taste, specifically Moscow Mules. It makes your lips tingle and feel a little shock that's delightful, if I do say so myself.
@Stallion copypasta time: "The most scientific benefit of using copper moscow mule mugs is temperature. For centuries, the best drinkers have known that chilled drinks in copper cups offer an extra-cool sensation, due to the metal quickly taking on the icy temperature of the cocktail. The rim of the mug becomes chilly almost instantly, offering a frozen sensation on your lips. The cold metal is highly effective at insulating the cold temperature of any liquid, especially good for summertime drinking, and deflecting heat from the sun. The handle of the mug helps maintain drink temperature, as well, keeping the near 100 degree body heat of your hand away from the walls of the mug, and your Moscow Mule safely chilled inside. "
@cengland0 disclaimer: I haven't actually tried drinking out of these yet (but I did go in for them today), but I'm sure the ones I've had at restaurants were food-safe too. That or it has more to do with what @xarous posted up there.
@Pamela They are selected by playing beer pong. (I don't really know.) But I am an avid Moscow Mule fan and have had it in many different drinking vessels and prefer solid copper mugs. They tend to hold the beverage at the right temp all the way through and I personally believe they enhance the taste and smell of the drink.
@xarous@JonT Jesus Christ, did anyone here not fail physics? Copper is a terrible insulator. It conducts heat better than almost anything. Sort by Thermal Conductivity and see what's at the end of the list. You know what's a good insulator? Fucking glass! If you want your drink to have a constant temperature all the way through try drinking from glass. I guess you could do worse if you make your mug from diamond or carbon nanotube. If you enjoy copper because you enjoy copper, that's fine. But don't try to spread some bullshit that copper is a good insulator.
@SSteve I was following along well enough for the cool rim on your lips logic, but yeah, if your goal is to keep your drink cool then pretty much any other material is a better option.
@SSteve but what you do is put the copper mugs in the freezer before you need them and then make your drink. Copper has a much better specific heat than glass so will keep the drink cooler.
@SSteve Best vessel I have for keeping beverages cool is a glass mug made to look like it's made from a mason jar. Thick glass and a handle so you never touch where the beverage is. I loved them as a kid for drinking milk. I suppose I should try it with some sort of mixed drink.
@SSteve look, I don't know what your fancy physics are talking about but I do know that every damn time I've drank something out of a copper mug it stays a hell of a lot colder than glass. Normal glasses - ice melts and warms up the drink. Copper mugs? Ice sticks around a lot longer.
@mellowirishgent I thought it was 2 cups total. Considering they cost $12-$30 a piece elsewhere, 2 for $12 seems about right. I would be happy if 4 showed though for sure!
@SSteve No clue if the copper works better than glass, and not sure I care since my drinks are usually gone well before the ice is. Physics don't lie but no clue if this is some crazy warp in physics space. Either way I think we can ALL drink to both sides of the argument. The data, rebuttal, and opinions: http://www.quora.com/Why-do-cold-drinks-get-colder-when-poured-into-copper-cups
@eVil In for a Twofer @ caustic-lucky-tortilla 'cause I love Ginger beer and the only way I can think of making it better is to add some neutral grain spirits- say Vodka... Plus: From the book "How To Archer" [One of my Christmas Presents] by Sterling "Moscow Mule I was worried that, given the overall espionage theme of this book, the Moscow Mule might seem like too obvious a choice. But then I realized go write your own fucking book."
I happened to be drinking a Moscow Mule as I checked Meh today! A few hours ago I posted another Thank You to the guy in the forums who gave it to me :).. Considering buying 2 more..
@jjohns71 Actually it might be. You can put metal in the microwave. How many microwaves come with metal shelves in them? They just have to be thick enough to be able to handle the energy of the magnetron. So don't put crumpled up aluminum foil in it or a CD but a spoon should be okay. Forks have points on them and tend to spark.
@DeuceSevin They are cups. You can put any liquid in them you want. Or ice cream or soup or something that will react with copper and make poison… They will work as a swimming pool for ants or Polly Pockets.
I'll pass, but I did learn something: The Dark & Stormy drink I've been making with vodka instead of rum (I ran out) is called a Moscow Mule. I prefer the vodka, but Dark & Stormy is still a better name.
@kostia MUGS SCHMUGS! Tastes just as good out of a mason jar. Re: Dark & Stormy- my version is juice of half a lemon (or lime), Maine Root Ginger Brew, and rum or vodka. Ginger brew: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/products/maine-root-ginger-brew Reed's Ginger Beer is too sweet for my taste!
Something ponderable about those "Welded Handles" — I have just barely enough experience with welding & brazing various metals as well as sweating copper pipes to wonder are they really "welded" or soldered?
@RedOak Seems to me it would take a hell of a lot of power to weld copper as it dissipates heat so quickly. I have heard that you can MIG copper using silicon bronze wire but that the color doesn't match (yellowish tint). I don't know if you could TIG it or not (you'd have to get a LOT of heat to get it to puddle) - maybe someone with more experience can offer a better answer.
@Pavlov if you zoom in tight on the joint using the "Ice Cold" photo, it appears to have some silver color, indicating they might be soldered similarly to "sweating" copper water pipes. (Not "welded")
@RedOak Plug or spot welded. If they are mass produced, place the cup section over a metal form (electrode -), clamp the handle in place (clamp being electrode +), and zap.
A local bar here charges $20 if they think you stole a mug. Unfortunately, they suck at knowing when another worker picked up a mug from a table. Resulting in less than meh customer service since they always assume you stole it.
@tonylegrone lol, i just wouldn't pay the tab at all if they add on $20 for something i didn't steal. Give them the choice i pay for my drinks i consumed or call the cops on them for trying to steal $20 from me.
@upbeatanime That's pretty what one of my friends did. He told them if they put the charge on his card that he would dispute it and they wouldn't get any money anyway. They caved after that. They also have no way to know if someone else stole your mug. It's a pretty stupid policy.
"Storing Drinking-water in Copper pots Kills Contaminating Diarrhoeagenic Bacteria" (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3312355/). Take it from the researcher from Bangladesh, it staves off the shits.
@distractedriver The coating on these is probably going to prevent any pH change which would be beneficial to killing diarrheagenic bacteria . . . just sayin'.
Such fancy cups, but at the end of the day, if we really wanted a drink, we would be happy with a warm drink in a old jelly jar, if that was all we had, and be thankful for it.
I would have been in, I made my first Moscow Mule last Friday, it was delicious, and all I was missing was the copper mug. Now I will have to add fresh blood to get that copper taste. MMmmmm.
kudos for basically writing up "a guy once said that you should buy these and now I'm saying that you should listen to that guy" and somehow selling out on these
I know this isnt the forum but the radio they sold last week i just recieved may be the buy of the year, it is off the hook , and well woth 5 x what i paid for it ty again Meh you are very kewl dudes ...

Are these truly 100% copper? I bought 6 and each one is cracked around the inside base. Not sure if the revealed black material is what the copper is plating or if it is the material used to weld the base to the cup. Either way, this displeases me.
@mjschmidt3 From the specs, they are pure copper with food-safe lacquer to preserve luster. Give us a shout at https://meh.com/support about the cracks.
I have another issue with them... Mine didn't have an image of Irk with floating icecubes and lime wedges... While I'm a little excited about not getting rotten limes and liquid in it... I wanted the Irk image...
OK all joking aside, They came in yesterday but I received them today, and look awesome! I can't wait to wash then try them.

@khiddy i think the lacquer prevents that as well

Is the copper content in these cups enough to make this a good deal for smelting purposes?
@curtise is this a legit question? What am I, a blacksmith? Do I look like a forgemaster to you? Do you see any foundries around here? Did I ask enough sarcastic rhetorical questions to get across that I don't know?
@JonT I had the same question, actually. How much does one of these bad boys weigh
@JonT Oooh, Jaunty Forgemaster's got his blacksmith panties all in a cranky wad. Lol
It's so much fun to poke the Bear! :)
@MsELizardBeth Product Dimensions: 3.8 x 5 x 3.5 inches ; 6.1 ounces
@JonT You guys are the ones that mentioned that it is "100% copper, like the finest electrical wiring", which is what people are stealing and smelting lately.
But seriously, I was expecting you to let me know how heavy the cups are, like @MsELizardBeth said.
@JonT you do look pretty blacksmithy tbh
@curtise copper is currently $2.10 a pound, these cups weigh 9.6oz each according to amazon. Thats a total of 1.2lbs of copper or $2.52
@curtise I don't think there is a enterprise where people steal copper wire and smelt it, I'm pretty sure they just take it to the recycling place that will pay them the most for it and not ask questions.
@curtise no
@curtise Ironically the best deal you are likely to get on copper is old pennies. The solid copper ones have a market value of about 2 cents each.
@badmnky You've never smelt copper before?
@nogoodwithnames 100% copper pennies were last minted in 1857, and probably more valuable as collector's items. Pennies made from 1902 to 1982 were 95% copper, and worth about 1.9 cents. http://www.coinflation.com/coins/1909-1982-Lincoln-Cent-Penny-Value.html
Kinda cool, but... ehhhhhhhhhh I don't really need this. Meh.
Last time it was a 4 pack for $30. It wasn't the same model but close enough. https://meh.com/deals/4-pack-moscow-mule-mugs
@cengland0 the last ones were not solid copper, they had brass handles and stainless steel with a copper coating just on the outside.
@cengland0 Copper-Plated Nickel with Stainless Steel Interior and Brass Handle vs today's all copper, there is a difference and if we are talking about Moscow Mules, it is a big difference.
@jemullins Ah, good catch. Thanks for pointing that out.
I don't think I'll be buying this mehg.
Incredi-meh.
How much can you get for these at the scrap yard?
@Romulux copper is currently $2.10 a pound.
@Romulux they pay more if there is still vodka in them... I bet you could almost break even!
meh. I can live without that.
What the MEH???!!!
If I hold one to each ear will I hear the ocean....or my regret for renewing my VMP membership? :-P
Never heard of copper mugs maybe ill die froom metal type poisening and stop buying stuff i cant use on meh . put me out of my misery ty MEH.
Meh for me but the wife has wanted some for some dumb reason and this is cheap enough for my impulsiveness.
patient-obsolete-cockroach
A little too patient, apparently.
@katfude
Solo cups are cheaper and do the job just as well.

@studerc Congratulations! Best wishes! Sorry I missed this when you posted - here's hoping you get to sleep the night all the way through sooner than later.
@studerc Congratulations!
@studerc Congrats!!!! And if you want a moscow mule mug I can send you mine I got in a fuku - unopened as I don't drink.
@studerc Congratulations on your baby girl! Just seeing this now. Hope everything is settling down for you.
@Kidsandliz Amazing. And to think, most people can only go a couple days without drinking. You can go weeks without food but without drinking you'll die quickly.
@cengland0 Smart ass LOL
@mauisean bogus bull dootie
Why are these everywhere all of a sudden? Personally I'd rather not drink out of a container that makes my beverage taste like electricity.
@PenguinOnTheRox that's the best part about a Moscow Mule in them! The little shock complements the carbonation and bite of the ginger beer and sourness and acidity of the lime.
@JonT You meant "complements".
@SSteve yeah, that's what I said!
@JonT Cheater! (Are you going to change it to "Cheetah!"?)
The "Hand Wash Only" problem is a deal breaker.
@cengland0 Curious what you are putting in it that requires a dishwasher and not just rinse with some soapy water...

@JonT How is that possible if they have a lacquer coating? That means you and your liquid never touch the actual copper.
@cengland0 disclaimer: I haven't actually tried drinking out of these yet (but I did go in for them today), but I'm sure the ones I've had at restaurants were food-safe too. That or it has more to do with what @xarous posted up there.
@JonT Methinks you're spending too much time working in front of a screen. Don't they ever let you have a day off?
@xarous Best drinkers? How are they selected?
@xarous I think you've got it man. Moscow Mules need to be COLD throughout the whole drink. It lets you use shitty vodka.

@SSteve but what you do is put the copper mugs in the freezer before you need them and then make your drink. Copper has a much better specific heat than glass so will keep the drink cooler.
@JonT For $6 a piece, i'll give them a try. Never had a Moscow Mule so i'll give that a try, or else i'll be drinking some other drank in my swag cup.

I'm a little bit worried about submerged Irk. I doubt that is healthy for him.
No thanks. I'll Cu next Two-for Tuesday.
@mcanavino ba-dah-tsssss!
Are these microwave safe?
@jjohns71 Actually it might be. You can put metal in the microwave. How many microwaves come with metal shelves in them? They just have to be thick enough to be able to handle the energy of the magnetron. So don't put crumpled up aluminum foil in it or a CD but a spoon should be okay. Forks have points on them and tend to spark.
@cengland0 I will test and report back! My work microwave seems like a prime victim/candidate to experiment!

@SSteve Oddly I like the "taste" of vodka and have never been drunk.
@SSteve Not sure what could taste more like alcohol than vodka…
@brhfl You're right. I should have said "liquor".
I just make mine in a regular glass, but then I use a section of leftover copper pipe as a straw.
