@guybrush01@phendrick common variants of Covid-19 are mostly spread in moist droplets of snot or saliva which will stick to the fibers of these masks long after they lose the ability to hold tiny dry particles.
In 7 months, these masks may let more than 5% of tiny dry particles pass through.
The passages through the mask are comparatively large, but not straight. Particles in a stream of air will tend to hit the mask fibers. Moist particles will stick to hydrophilic surfaces due to surface tension. Oily or dry particles stick to dangling chemical bounds due to electrostatic effects. The electrostatic characteristics weaken over time.
Heat or ozone exposure will rapidly reduce the electrostatic effectiveness. Oxygen exposure reduces the effectiveness more slowly.
I stopped thinking we’d only keep using these things for a few more months when I figured out that they were helping with other problems, too. But “useful” and “needed” AND “comfortable” is still a goal not yet achieved.
@werehatrack I like the Powecom ones (if you have a larger head though the ear loops will be a bit tight. I solve that by looping them behind my glasses ear pieces.) Been on the list as approved N95 substitutes since at least May 2020. Cheap from one of the distributors for the company. In New York. No tax and no shipping last I knew (but of course that may or may not have changed). If I am lucky I can adjust them so no glasses fogging (not always lucky though). https://bonafidemasks.com/face-masks/
@mike808 Misery loves company.
… and it’s not that far from Misery to Texas.
which is the place where I guess the remaining living will still ship these to us.
@mike808@rrmcgrew “don’t do anything” … not once you’re dead already. or in a medically-induced coma with a tube down your throat. Your choice. You got your Freedom after all…
@radi0j0hn don’t use past the expiration date you might get poisoned by degrading plastic and those mosquitoes that shoot you up with cotton candy. Or they might ask you at the entrance of wherever you are going what is the expiration date you know they spoil over time and start to smell yucky and turn green and mildew and mold and release poisonous spores whenever you breathe out.
If these are the same as the ones in the pack with the UV wand and sanitizer sprayer about 2 months ago, the straps seem really short for an average US adult.
Even if you look at the photo of the lady wearing one (the one that is not in the Louvre), it looks like it is pulling her ears forward. and it definitely does that for me, but often the strain of trying to stretch it over my ears gets one of the straps to pop off.
EDIT I mean break at the connection to the mask where the strap is plastic-spot-welded to the mask material. Not pop off my ears. My ears can handle it but they sure don’t like it.
the filter material seems adequate and I’ve started to use these without straps as an inner layer to some thinner cloth masks I had. but I wouldn’t buy more if it was with the same straps.
With the government mask mandates and unemployment benefits ending, I should be able to sell these for 10x the cost in a month or two to all the workers.
Yeah, the other ones from meh that are five to a bag are great. These, I believe, are too tight for the average adult face. I still use them, but they literally hurt.
@ohhwell are you saying you tried this specific brand? cuz while ive bought useless kn95 masks i find the ones that are authentic fit me way better than n95 (especially if they have headstraps rather than ear straps)!
these are so cheap I am tempted to try them with ear savers, but if the brand is bad I wont bother.
Got these when they were 50-for-$15. Definitely a solid “meh” rating for adults, due to the short-ass ear loops. When I wear one, it gives me Alfalfa Ear
You can mitigate this a bit by firmly pinching the loop together near the mask/loop joint, then tugging the loose end fully taut a half dozen times. Kinda like buying tools from Harbor Fright, ya get what ya pay for.
@hamjudo it’s a pretty big improvement, yeah? I actually took a package of these over to the meat-and-beer store around the corner because the owner is too cheap to provide them with masks
@kggoodman I’ve bought large packs of KN95’s 3 times, I think twice from meh. Different boxes than these. 1 was in 5-packs, 1 in 2-packs, 1 individually wrapped (pretty sure that was from meh, and that individually wrapped was mentioned in the ad). I prefer individually wrapped so I can most conveniently and sanitarily give them away to my Uber passengers when needed.
I wish this said if they’re made in Korea or China. I believe the Arun company is in China. Had read in some places (unauthenticated sources, I’ll admit) that the Chinese-manufactured KN95 masks are less reliable but who knows!
ALSO: For those concerned these ear-loops may be short and therefore snug on the ears, I strongly recommend a lanyard, which pulls the earlobes further back and secures around the back of your head rather than on the ears.
@Ishmel Nope, the lanyards are great. Elastic around the back of your head is way more comfortable than around your ears. And they’re adjustable for the length/tension.
@Ishmel@OutbackJon@srbuwsnyc Maybe us wimpy men should get our ears pierced to attach hanging hooks to attach our cheap Chinese KN-95 masks more comfortably, and maybe with some earrings to brighten the mood a bit too. Can’t believe all those women (and sometimes young girls) are so excited about putting holes in their ears.
I read recently that some foreign airlines were banning cloth masks because they are so ineffective, ie 38% vs 95% for KN95s. Haven’t seen anything about domestic airlines yet
On the 20th anniversary of 9/11 attacks, I just hope they bring back Air Marshalls to go beat the crap out of unruly passengers on airplanes, I mean, um, safely and humanely restrain and arrest them.
For all I know we still have Air Marshalls, but when that stuff goes down, they’re like "F#Wk it, guess they’re not a ForeignTerrorist (we were told was the only threat), I’ll let the flight attendants deal with it. "
Hi. Got these last time. 2 boxes. They are VEEEEERY tight behind the ears. I guess, in a way, that could be a good thing because there’s not a big gap. They are kinda tough to breathe in, so if you have trouble breathing in masks, these are NOT for you. Or if masks typically hurt your ears, these are NOT for you. I’ll suffer through the 2 boxes I purchased. I use them for short periods of time…that’s about all I can handle…pain wise & breath wise, but at work or when I need to wear a mask for hours, no way. Not really complaining, just wanted to give a heads up for others considering them what my issues were. Good luck!
I bought some of those adjustable straps that clip onto the ear loops and take the pressure off the back of my ears. They’re very effective, and they also tighten the fit around the face.
As for these, again: no manufacturer, model #, or any info at all. Not going to buy an important product like this completely blind…
Have had it and been vaccinated against it. I’mo old fat and tired and hate breathing in warm air especially in the summer while wearing a mask so I’m just going to take my chances. But I think I will be pretty safe I don’t go out much I don’t like people so I don’t have people over and get most of my groceries and other items delivered. Plus I’m broken down with diabetes asthma a double dose of the factor five Leiden gene cholesterol and triglycerides in the mid 400s But my blood pressure is great. Really somebody should’ve just taken me out behind the barn ago and shot me.
@phendrick lol. I doubt that would work I live in a Roughside as a peek in where there’s a gun fire and people getting shot all the time they just keep missing me. Their aim must not be very good
@fairchild521@phendrick Come to my neighborhood. We have gun fire around here at least once a week. The murder rate in this city is pretty high so at least some of the shooters seem to have good aim. Unfortunately.
seriously guy my bro was like you, he had some kind of gut bypass, I was against it but it turned his whole life around.
i have chronic health issues too, Covid has prevented me from having elective surgeries twice already. it forced me to clean up my eating habits completely just to be functional.
(overweight was never a problem for me …I have genetic disorders).
anyhow, I am a loner too, but my dogs keep me sane and in self preservation mode (they are old and would almost certainly be put down rather than re-homed if I croak).
if you are looking for a lifeline, I highly recommend dogs or joining your local unitarian church (I am an atheist bit the Unitarians take everybody … unfortunately my local branches are only meeting remotely).
anyhow, wishing you better health and a richer life!

@guybrush01 Are you talking about the masks or the buyer?
@guybrush01 @phendrick common variants of Covid-19 are mostly spread in moist droplets of snot or saliva which will stick to the fibers of these masks long after they lose the ability to hold tiny dry particles.

@guybrush01 @hamjudo I believe Bill Nye could not have said it better.

High-end packaging-- what’s that mean?
1-packs? 5-packs? 50-packs? (in other words, individually wrapped, or multiply wrapped?)
@WaltC
When it’s held upright
The wrapper and top of box
High end packaging
@replicacobra @WaltC 5 bags of 10 each, I’m pretty sure.
Sure. Why not.
Plenty of maskholes around here in Misery still haven’t died off yet.

@mike808 Misery loves company.

@mike808 @pmarin
Abundantly Damned
Good name for a conjurer
Or a metal band
@mike808 almost like the masks don’t do anything
@mike808 @rrmcgrew They DID, but then everyone took them off again.
@mike808 @rrmcgrew “don’t do anything” … not once you’re dead already. or in a medically-induced coma with a tube down your throat. Your choice. You got your Freedom after all…
@pmarin oooh scary
They really couldn’t find a stock photo of someone actually wearing a mask that they had to photoshop one on?
@katbyter
Stock photo problems
All images are of soup
Break out Photoshop
What’s to expire?
@radi0j0hn yeah that whole « date » thing on stuff like these is kind-of silly.
@pmarin @radi0j0hn except for the elastic…it definitely expires and then breaks when it gets old…
@radi0j0hn don’t use past the expiration date you might get poisoned by degrading plastic and those mosquitoes that shoot you up with cotton candy. Or they might ask you at the entrance of wherever you are going what is the expiration date you know they spoil over time and start to smell yucky and turn green and mildew and mold and release poisonous spores whenever you breathe out.

@hchavers
Mask profiteering
I sense anger in your tone
You’ll refuse to sell
Hilarious write-up tonight - “these things disappear like they were the sneaky love child of the TV remote and an unmatched laundry sock.”
Keyword non medical. So sanding and paint spraying…
Yeah, the other ones from meh that are five to a bag are great. These, I believe, are too tight for the average adult face. I still use them, but they literally hurt.
@kfdavila
These masks hurt your face
But your face is killing me
So buy and wear pls
@replicacobra worry not, I keep it covered.

laughing at our masks
I want the masks with the “behind the head” straps!
@summetj Just buy the lanyard straps with two clips. I bought a pack of 50 for ten bucks and hand them out.
@summetj I sewed velcro straps onto a cloth mask for that reason, a mask with a pocket for a disposable filter.
These bleed so much air around the terrible fit that a basic blue mask may almost be better.
@ohhwell are you saying you tried this specific brand? cuz while ive bought useless kn95 masks i find the ones that are authentic fit me way better than n95 (especially if they have headstraps rather than ear straps)!

This hits close to home:
“have to work at home for a week. (Maybe even two! Boy that desk drawer banana is going to be a little soft when we get back!”
Left an apple in my desk. Upon my return to the office 6 months later it was closer to apple sauce.
@earl_danger
At least it wasn’t pizza dough left outside in the dumpster for two weeks after Hurricane Ida.
@earl_danger @mike808 @replicacobra
dumpster saddens me
I can’t pick up Mix and Match
dough shall rise again!

@msayler I can confirm that this actually worked when I tried it. The mask was much more comfortable after I manhandled the elastic.
@hamjudo it’s a pretty big improvement, yeah? I actually took a package of these over to the meat-and-beer store around the corner because the owner is too cheap to provide them with masks
Are these masks individually wrapped/packaged?
@kggoodman if the pack we think it is, a sealed bag of 10 each. which a Chinese label on each bag. and 5 of those packs in the box.
@srbuwsnyc sounds painful
@Ishmel Nope, the lanyards are great. Elastic around the back of your head is way more comfortable than around your ears. And they’re adjustable for the length/tension.
@srbuwsnyc I think @Ishmel was referring to the “pulls the earlobes further back” part of your comment. That would be painful.
@Ishmel @OutbackJon @srbuwsnyc Maybe us wimpy men should get our ears pierced to attach hanging hooks to attach our cheap Chinese KN-95 masks more comfortably, and maybe with some earrings to brighten the mood a bit too. This is my first order waiting to see how good your items are
Very disappointing you used the Lords name in vein after I purchased. This will be my last from your company.
Bought 300, because this is Delta!
Wow! Shipping time to California is damned slow.
Got mine yesterday. Ready for Mu.
I got mine 9/21 just as you said.
WONDERFUL and Thank You
